I'm sure this will draw some of the negatives also, but here's what I really like about the new board:
1. It's fast. There's no question that loading most pages, especially the main index, is faster than the old board. That will be a huge benefit when we're pounding away watching a close finals on the NT next year.
2. You can send private messages. I know we can all use email, but the integrated messaging is very convenient, and doesn't require users making their email addresses available publicly.
3. Being able to have a photo by your name. I know a lot of people will use drawings, cartoons, porno (not for very long), etc., but it's nice to be able to put a face to a name.
4. Seeing who's online. During the day, it's pretty cool to see how many current users there are, who they are, and what they're doing. Of course, you can "hide" yourself, but that's not fun, so please don't!
Any other new features people like?
Theo,
All of those things are great and definitely an improvement over the old board.
The one thing that the old board did well was the front page. I personally feel that we have too many threads which makes looking for new messages a real pain.
Is there anyway that we can create a view similar to the old board? Is there an additional module out there? If not I know we have a large number of talented individuals at our disposal that could probably create one for us.

The closest thing they have built-in is the search for messages in the last 24 hours (from the link at the bottom of the home page). If there was a threaded version of that (combining messages on the same thread), and you added a one line preview of the message, you would essentially have exactly the same search as the old board. I'm sure that wouldn't be a hard customization.
UBB.threads, since it is provided as PHP source code, is highly customizable. There is a whole website for UBB developers: ThreadsDev (http://www.threadsdev.com). If anyone out there wants to look into this, I'm sure Conrad would help integrate the customization. Go to that site and do a search on existing custom search pages, and if you don't find something, post a message on that forum. And then if you don't find something, Conrad might consider doing it after finishing any other priority projects. And of course, if you're a hard-core PHP programmer and want to help out, let us know - we're always looking for more volunteers!
Theo,
Was the main page from the old board 24 hours? I thought it was more like 36 - 48 hours.
I might be willing to take a look at it this winter. Of course we have 10 inches of snow here in North Dakota so it sure feels like winter.

I like this new feature of having to really look for information. It will not take long, and you don't get all the negativity that was becoming way to common in the threads listed at the very first page you look at.
This will allow people to show off the PDGA without fear of someone spouting off IMHO.
I have been using boards like this over the last few years, and as they have developed it has been nice to watch the evolution.
THis is faster, cleaner, and smoother than the other board, and the options are great.
I really liked how it monitored the amount of posts you have put in.
THanks,

There is another thing that I really like about the new setup...I'm just amazed by how many people are active and at least reading the board at any given time! The highest level of usage I've seen so far is 76. 30 logged in users and 40 some-odd anonymous readers! Wow! That amount of readers/posters is a lot larger than I expected it to be!
I think it's gonna be interesting to see how those numbers rise and fall.
The more time I spend just browsing around on it, the more I learn about it and get it figured out too! Still haven't really checked out the formatting capability yet, but I've seen a number of posters say that it is going to be easier to learn than the Discusware version...

WOW Theo,
This is way faster and the options available are great. Hopefully all that want to view the Major events that are broadcast on the web will be able to view them. This is a great expansion on the web site.

I like the ability to send messages to others privately. Only, if you do not regularly click on the MY HOME feature, you will not realize you have messages. I have set my options to always show my home page when I log in.
I also like the ability to monitor my favorite threads. This way, I can tell if someone has posted something new on the "MRV" thread. This is fantastic, as I don't have to wade through 10,000 Texas threads to see what's going on with the message board. I think the fact I never have to see another Texax thread again is PRICELESS!!!!!! :D
I also can tell who is online. You can put people in your address book, and (as long as they are not annonymous) you can see when they are on the board. The overall list of who is logged on is nice, too.
Now, would someone be a sweetheart and let those of us with photos and no website let us use your website to host our photos so we can use them with our profiles? I am so technically challenged, I have been overwhelmed by all the features on the new board, but, I will strive on.
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? :D
The amount of people online at one time could be a bit misleading though. What is the refresh time on users? I know some boards allow you to set a time from 5 minutes to an hour to show how many people are on. If it's close to 5 minutes then i'm sure the amount of people on at one time is pretty accurate. But if it doesn't refresh the amount of people online but once every 30 minutes to an hour the actual number of peple on at one time would be skewed a bit.

I like the main page breakouts of topics; especially the PDGA topics section. It makes it much easier to to get to where you want to be.
I have to admit the see who's online section is sick (Mikey likes it). Just a little too voyeuristic for my tastes.
I can host some photos on my website. Email me the photo, and I'll email you the link to use.

I also must say that I love the individual club features. Texas, OK, now have a place to really call their own on the PDGA, and those of us that may not want to read about Monthly Mini's in Tejas no longger need to see it!
Hats off to finally unveiling the new forum for folks to use!

Nick is in Japan so we may not see him post until next week.
Sorry, I still prefer the other forum. I don't understand all this talk about the speed of the new site. The old board always came up immediately for me and I could see all of the recent activity in every thread. New is not always better! It takes me a large multiple of time than before to seach through and see new posts. Pictures are nice I guess, but so what.
jackinkc
Nov 06 2003, 01:44 PM
Each screen loads super fast, way faster than before.
Threads are segmented much easier by division, and it may not have each individual posts in there, but you can pick your section andd easily navigate it, as well as seeing if new information has been posted.
I also must say that not once this week have I received an error message try again server busy that was a common place in the old board.
If you never experienced slow loading times, you must be with the computer, because I have a huge pipe and I was SLOW at getting pages to load quite often.
Change is not always good, but sometimes needed anyway. This was needed to get the forum up to current Techno-standards.
Just my thought, I am sure that you are not alone in the thinking. No offense meant.
Discette - I think your current picture is stellar.

Geocities blocks hot-linking to their servers from an outside site (for non-html material like jpgs and gifs). That's why the picture doesn't work. In fact, it might be something they would shut down your account for if you do it too incessantly, though I doubt one picture will get them too upset.

The board is certainly NOT faster for dial-up users. If you're already beyond that, what's the point? Speed is not germaine anyways, since it takes so much longer to find things.
Speaking of which, the "keyword" search was woefully uncooperative before-now the "search" search doesn't even work, period.
Plus, the "automatically connect to" messages are bogus

On the preview page, you can make an edit and then post without having to preview again.
The preview page can be a bit confusing. It has two forms, with two different <font color="blue">Continue</font> buttons. The top form submits your post as is (the text in the box is not editable), while the bottom form gives you the same options as the original post form, depending whether you check the "preview" box. If you uncheck that box and hit the <font color="blue">Continue</font> button underneath, your newly edited message will be posted.

I'll be making a small change to the message board to prevent pictures from being used in signatures. Due to the fact that they're repeated in every post, they slow load times and eat up space. You can always include a picture as part of your profile. As a reader, you can choose whether to view profile pictures, in your settings under "My Home".
Pictures will be removed from the 13 signatures that currently contain them.
-Conrad
In most of the other online forums I've seen (fantasy football, jambands, etc.) images in sig files are allowed. Limits are set to keep them from growing too huge. Additionally, the Mid-Atlantic Disc Club and the PDGA acquired demographic data, and the percentage of users with household incomes approaching or over $100,000 and have broadband was high; you would think that even more people have access to high speed internet at home and at work, so load time should not be an issue anymore these days.
Does anybody use dial-up anymore?

The question was brought up by a message board user and doesn't relate to moderating. I have always wondered myself why there is a maximum edit time. On other message boards you can edit indefinitely.

I'm guessing that it was a feature of the new message board.
Personally, I'm not opposed to the change, especially since several moderators received angry tirade PMs from Morgan laced with curse words which were not censored.

-Conrad
A note has been sent to the administrators. Images in signature files result in unacceptable loading times for threads, even for users with high-speed internet connections. For dial-up users, it's intolerable.

Apr 04 2007, 11:58 AM
My signature image file size is 3.65 KB compared to Moderator's avatar image at a whopping 182.13 KB. Following the link provided in my signature, we can see that there are rules already instated to prevent "unacceptable loading times" for all users. Also, the quote by Conrad Damon is over 3 years old, in which time there have been some pretty amazing technological advances in terms of internet connections.
False logic.

The only reason that images in signature files are currently allowed is because we recently had a message board software upgrade and the default settings are in place. This is similar to users being temporarily unable to change their avatars - it was a glitch from the upgrade. The link you've provided is to the default FAQ for UBB.threads software and is overrided by our previous rule change.
As soon as an administrator gets to it, images will again not be allowed in signature files, as is our current rule.
If you would like to petition the administrators to allow images in signature files, you are free to do so. Arguments presented here will likely not be seen by administrators - you must contact them directly.

I like how you selectively cut out the file size information for avatar vs. signature.

A. Increasing the bandwidth used by the pdga which in time will force the host to charge the pdga more money.
B. Making it inconvenient for those with dialup causing longer load times.

D. Unnecessarily wasting viewers and moderators time when they/we have to scroll past the images and response to viewers' complaints about the images.

Colin,
Just so you you know, because of your actions today it was suggested to us by a message board user that perhaps we need an additional rule concerning actions taken that intentionally try to hinder the performance of the message board. This is similar to someone launching a denial of service attack on the server. If taken to an extreme, such as posting several 10MB pictures randomly throughout the current threads just to disrupt the communication mechanism, it would be very easy for someone to basically make the message board unusable for dial-up users.
Because of your actions today, Colin, the moderators will suggest this new rule to PDGA Communications Director Steve Dodge and the Administrators.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that if you send non-current members a Private Message, they will not be able to read them. Non-current members cannot log into their accounts, and can only view the message board.

... so from the sender's perspective , it would be a valid and good PM ... non-responded-to of course , once your intended-recipient is dropped-back-to-"anon"-view-only-status ... the PM would go into the "Twilight Zone" ... ? ...
.
... now if one of these "former members" gets current in '08 or '09 ; I imagine a load of unopened, unseen , old PM's hitiing their inbox ...
.
... strange ...

... you'd think that programming could be possible to "stop" a PM from being accepted and sent to a non-active address ...

... it would seem to be a "do-able thing" for the Program 'n' Set-Up of this system to remedy this ...
.
... to Not - accept a PM to the "massive" number of non-current former posters with-their-profiles-still-"on-board" ...
.
... it would seem to be appropriate ...

I get off probation tomorrow for saying, "20 or 30 iq points?" so don't anyone ask me what they are missing! :D

Don't bite my head for asking this if it was already answered somewhere, but I couldn't find where....
Is there a reason that the "View All User's Posts" feature was disabled?

I don't think it was ever intentionally disabled, just lost when the board software upgrade occurred.
There is still a very easy way to view a user's posts. Just click on Search (next to Main Index up above) and then type the username of the person whose posts you want to view in the Username search box. You can also choose which forum(s) you want to search on the left, and the date range below the username.
Hope that helps.

It was part of an upgrade a while back. You can still do it by using the search function.

Thanks. I never use the search feature when looking for a topic because I find it almost useless when looking for old posts, but I just tried it for a user search and it works. Cool.
