First of all I'd like to introduce myself. I started playing disc golf around 1995 in Baltimore (Druid Hill) and was instantly hooked. I played about 4 times a week (at least) until 1998 when I moved to NYC, which effectively put a halt to my disc golfing for awhile. Anyway, I recently moved to San Diego and have picked up the sport again. I am so psyched to be playing again, even though I've lost about 50 feet off my drives. Doh! But I do seem to be making more 30 footers than I did before. Hmmm...guess I just needed little 4 year break to help my putting! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif So far I've played Morley Field a bunch and La Mirada a couple of times. Really liked both courses and I'm itching to try out all the SoCal courses.

Okay I'll get to the point. I was just wondering if there were any disc golf shops in the area besides the pro shops at the two courses above. I can't believe how many new discs have come out the past few years and I am eager to try them all out! Since I started playing again, I've picked up a Z-XS, Z-Cyclone, Z-Predator, Z-X2, Z-Xpress, and a Pro Line (clear) Teebird. As you have probably figured out, I am a Discraft fan, but not exclusively. I have always loved Rocs and use them for all of my midrange shots. My fave drivers used to be Cyclones and X-Clones, but I haven't really seen many people using those anymore. Of my new discs, I like the XS and Teebird best.

Anyway, just glad to be playing again. This seems like a cool board and I'm glad I found it. Even if you don't know of any shops in SoCal, feel free to just say hi and introduce yourself!

Peace
Joohoon

Hey you should try The Z-Wasp (Roc) and The Z-Wildcat. Can't go wrong with these.

So Morley and La Mirada are the closest courses to San Diego? Just wondering cause I gotta wedding there in March and dg is always on the agenda.

DISCovering the World is on the way to La Mirada after you get off the 5. No disc shops in San Diego.

big black dog,
Morley is in San Diego. La Mirada is in Orange County, about an hour and fifteen minute drive north. I know there is another course in San Diego, but I haven't played that one yet. I heard it is on a ball golf course?

Thanks for the info guys, I will definitely check out Discovering the World next time I'm up that way.

Any other shops in the LA area?

Can a ball golfer and disc golfer play a round together at Mission Trails?

personally, I have not been there. But, I believe that both can play at the same time.

Based on my trip out there last week, it seemed like there would be no problem if a BG and DG wanted to roll in the same cart/group.

Awesome experience, make sure you bring footwear with very good traction if you plan to visit. You will be doing a lot of distance shots from grass that may possibly be wet.

I ended up with a pathetic ten over my first time through. Before I spend another $14 for 3 hours out there, I'm going to have to go out to a practice field and throw a thousand long rollers. Can't believe Micah shot a 58 on that setup!

Rich,
I would love to check out the pro shop at La Mirada. Unfortunately, it's beeen closed both times I've been there...

Wow. Mission Trails sounds insane. Do ball golfers and disc golfers play the same layout? That would mean hole lengths between 150-550 YARDS per hole if it is a typical ball golf course! So what is par for Mission Trails?!

Jan 21 2003, 06:33 PM
BTW, I would love to play a 550 yard disc golf hole! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Joohoon,

The par for Mission Trails is 71. The layout is the same as for the ball golfers, but the baskets are usually short of the greens, in trees off the fairway. Still plenty of long holes (I think 3 or 4 holes are over 1000 feet) and lots of trouble with OB creeks and course boundaries. A real challenge.

I may get a chance to play it later this week. Email me if you are interested in joining up. I've been a San Diego local for over 20 years and it is a real contrast to Morley Field.

Welcome to San Diego. I'll probably see you on the course soon.

Don't think the selection is too good, but there is a little pro shop at the Huntington Beach course. Joohoo, you should make a trip up to Oak Grove also! No shop, but a very fun short course. Huntington Beach's course is alright, but nothing you have to do right away. See u at morley sometime!

Rob,

Thanks for posting the phone number for the shop. I am slowing trying to make my way around to all of the SoCal courses. Just wish I had more time to get out on the course!

The new address is 6455 Roland St, NE of the old place and North of the '5'.

What I wanted to say is, DTW has had the same catalog, basically, just the covers changed, and updated a bit, from 1996-present. But the latest issue has "cut-away" profiles if the Discraft rims' configurations, which is a keen feature...if just to compare the various shapes, and numbers. Wanna know the weird part? Some profiles resemble short-handled, bolf woods and irons. One even looks like a putter...serindipity...wild, wacky stuff...
