I just tried out one of these and thought it was going to be very over stable, but to my surprise it really isn't overly stable at all. In fact it's nearly to the point of being slightly flippy. Somebody pointed out that they thought it looked too flat and showed me one that was more domey. Are they supposed to be flat or have a little more dome to them? How stable are these supposed to be? I'm not sure it will hold up incredibly well in a head wind, but since it hasn't been windy in a month out here it's not that big of a problem.
I guess I have a couple other questions for you discraft boys. How far will the Z extreme go compared to your other drivers? What I'm looking for is something that I can throw with my normal throw into a strong headwind. I don't like throwing with a lot of angle to get more hyzer, so I like to step up a disc and use my normal throw. The problem is I haven't been able to find anything that will hold up and fly a descent ways that lasts more than a couple of throws.
Thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to making the switch. I haven't thrown a discraft disc in over 5 years, but they are just pumping out too much good stuff now to ignore them any longer. Besides, I'll be heading back to Iowa over the holidays and I hate using my good innova stuff in the cold! Ha ha, I'm self amusing.

I'm puzzled about a flippy predator. My X Predator got beat up pretty good and I don't trust it as much into a headwind but I can get some really good distance out of it. The Booty was throwing the X for most of his drives the last time I played a round with him. I took my Z Predator out of the bag today and replaced it with a Z Xtreme. I only used the ZPred for a spike sidearm or backhand. The ZXtreme filled it's place nicely. It is a little bit more overstable but controllable. Timmy probably has tried it as a driver. Maybe he'll grace us with a post.
I use a z-pred when it is windy; the only thing I use an Xtreme for is Knife or spike shot, what ever you prefer to call them.
I used the Xtreme this year in AZ before the Predator came out. It helped me shoot a really good round in the wind at Vista.
Now if a hole is over 350 in windy conditions I will never throw an Xtreme, I would throw a Z-pred. I find that I cannot throw an Xtreme much farther than 320 feet in a steady head wind. The Z-predator will go much farther.
I'm sure Chris is still having nightmares about me out driving him with a left-handed hyzer shot with an X-predator when he was throwing an XS turned over! I hope Santa brings you an equalizer this year Chris!/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
I have a couple Z-Predators (thanks carlo!) and i love em. For me they are stable pigs and incredibly fast, perhaps the fastest disc on the market, but not necessarily the farthest. Everynow and again the flight suprises me, but typically it's just a fast pig.
mitch
My buddy Marc has a Z-Pred that is very flat. It is also understable. They're supposed to be domey and stable as a mother-stable. Or stable-Mabel. Or disc-go-left-now stable. Really stable.
Thanks, I think I have a pretty good grip on what's what now. I'll definitely be looking for a domier one and an extreme.

Mith after a few rounds that predator will start to amaze you on the D.. I have one that I have been playing with for about 2 months and at first it 300 stable the other day I threw it 420 on a hole that is 398.. it will get less stable after a while.. later

Clue the Z exteme is WAY STABLE .. it is perfect for the 280-320 ft hyzer knife and probably awesome for a fore hand but I can't talk to that I can't throw that shot..
I carry both..
I have a 174 gm Zpredator with a ghost stamp.
This disc is quite domey and very overstable...just as its 2.5 rating would imply.
I throw it sidearm or backhand, on holes that I do not want the disc to skip as it always turns so far over that it lands at a very sharp angle and sticks. I can throw this disc with a very, very, very strong anhyzer and it will still turn its self over and land on the opposite edge.
The Zpredator is with out a doubt the most overstable disc that I have ever thrown.
Try the Z-Extreme!!!! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif
Clue- maybe you got a warped Z-Pred. I have a few of them and all of them are killer stable and fast. I have much confidence in their head wind abilities. I know a few of the local ultra distance huckers who swear by their predictability! And the Z-Xtreme- Wow- this disc is Ultra Overstable- It won't go far- but it will always turn-- HARD- great for some trick type shot (Skips, sidearms, and forehand rollers)(definetly not distance)

I had the SWEETEST Z Pred EVER and it weighed 166. It was AWESOME. My longest driver by far. Then I threw a thumber with it and it got lost in a lake in OHIO  But yes they do make Z Preds in as light as 166.
I saw a Z-pred in the lost-and-found box at 163

They are stable maybe if you can tell us what color yours is and that might be why it is understable some color molds are more understable in z-plastic and some are more overstable.

I used to have an orange 168 Z-Predator that thing would just fly straight and not fade very much. But now I have a yellow 174 Z Predator and that is a meat hook. We have two uphill +300ft hyzer shots on the course and the Predator I just throw up and straight and it turns left full rudder at the end of the flight. STABLE PIG, and very fast.

From what I know they made a FIRST run of Z PREDS that all frew like Teebirds and thats not how they wanted it to fly so they retooled it to be more overstable. Ive heard that its mostly the Orange Z ones and the Red and Blue X Preds that they ran. I sure wish they would bring back that early mold and just rename it so we had something that flew like a Teebird :D

I have a beat-to-[*****] Z-predator that flies just like a teebird. My friends back home used to call it that, Steve's teebird. It took a Long time to get it that way though. Sounds like the Avenger should be pretty close.

May 06 2005, 02:11 PM
It depends the NEW Wildcats have been coming out REAL STABLE to OVERSTABLE so if we are comparing them to the New Z Cats then Yes its less stable but I would say compared to the old regular flippy Valk like Wildcats then NO Its not less stable. It has alot of Understable GLIDE to it and come back slightly at the end. I think it will be a VERY useful disc for EVERYONE. Newbies and short arms will get more distance with it and Long arms will have a GREAT FLIPPY driver and LONG DISTANCE disc and once it beats in they will have a GREAT GREAT LONG DISTANCE ROLLER. Im still waiting for discraft to release a driver that flies like my BUZZZs. In essence Discrafts version of the Teebird :D

Steve,
Have you tried the Z-XL? The opaque ones are more stable then the clearer (sp) ones. It is just like my Buzzz but 50ft longer. They even beat up into a nice turning disc that fades slightly at the end like the teebird.
A nicely used Z-Talon also flies like a Teebird but it just does not have the float like the deeper rimmed Teebird. You have to put some [*****] behind a talon to get it out to 375ft.

I know exactly what you are saying Kris, I spent probably 5 months buying and testing, and testing some more in order to try and find a Discraft disc that equalled my Teebird. I don't care for Innova's plastic blends, and just when I find one that I like, they discontinue it. After a lot of frustration I just decided that if I wanted a Teebird, I would have to use a Teebird. The new champion Teebirds are much stiffer then the previous run, if you like the way they feel, I'd suggest buying 8 or 10 of them, that should last you for a couple years, and hopefully by then Innova will have better plastic, or Discraft will have made a closer mock of a Teebird in Z plastic. As to date, the closest thing I found was the newer Z-XL, the opaque ones like you said. But it's still not a Teebird :(
So I throw max weight champion Teebirds, everything else is Discraft.

Honestly, Stevie, I think your main issue resides in lack of touch. It's cool that you can throw a Predator 600 feet, but if you can't throw a Gazelle without it rolling, I think that might indicate a bigger problem laying below the surface.
Maybe you should start all over with your left hand and try to learn how to throw discs correctly.

I CAN throw ANYTHING straight but to throw a GAZELLE straight im not going to be able to get the D that I want out of it. I want a Disc that is going to go 380-400 ft on a FLAT LINE. I can get my BUZZZs out to about 370-380 if I REALLY RIP them but I want something I can throw SMOOTH and get it out past 380 and to almost 400. I can throw a 166 Z Wildcat flat and straight its just not going to go very far because you cant put the snap and power into it because if you do then it will just FLIP over and ROLL.
Maybe you should start all over with your left hand and try to learn how to throw discs correctly.

I actually dont even have a predator in my bag. I replaced them with the Z Tsunami. I use them for headwinds Hyzers and Spikes. For disc golf shot distance I throw a Beat up Proline Tsunami and for just PURE DISTANCE in a Field I like to throw Z Crushes Z Flashes Z Wildcats and D Crushes.
Are you FLIPPING them over or are you TURNING them over because I can TURN over just about ANY DISC on the market but can only FLIP about half the discs on the market and thats prolly pushing it. It sounds like your TURNING all these discs over and you need to work on your technique and form and release angle before you start looking for more overstable discs.
The Z Pred is a GREAT discs I just dont throw them anymore and I certainly dont throw them for Distance

Yeah I turn them, sorry. I have no problem throwing Orc's and Beasts, but every discraft disc I throw I turn over. I throw everything max weight. Beasts are my go to disc golf shot discs, but am leaning towards the orc. The Crush is a good disc, but the Flash turns over right away for me.

Might help this old man stay competitive in years to come.
This is for the Guy who doesn't throw Innova plastic............
I hope you find what your looking for. If a specific disc is what your looking for , I may have it.
All I need is a specific type , mold or run type , and possibly weight / color. Hopefully hotstamp prefference is not an issue.
If so , I have a connection for that as well.
Are you Discraft only ? DGA ? Lightning ? Millenium ? Ching ? Gateway ? Quarter K ? Destiny Discs ?
Does it matter if the Disc's are American made ?
From Mexico ?
Taiwan ?
China ?
Brazil ?
U.K. / London ?
Saudi Arabia ?
I may have missed a few Countries. The Russian flyer is hard to come by these days.

do you realize that mills is a self-proclaimed 550 ft thrower? the problem is not that he can't get a disc out to 400 ft. he's looking for something that will glide out to 400 and tail off slightly at the end of its flight... your suggestion would be like telling tiger woods to go workout some more so he can hit it out to 300 yards. what the pimp is looking for is a solid "3 iron" for his bag so that he's not always stuck hitting his 5 wood and leaving himself with a 50 foot putt when he should have a 20-25 footer. but i think he'll probably clear all that up when he sees your suggestion. :)

What Mills needs is an XL or an XS with some touch. I prefer overstable plastic, but these are both neutral and former World Distance record throwers. I can probably push them both just shy of 400 (390-400) on a good day, but reserve them for shots 350-375, no sense working that hard if you don't have too.

So you pledge allegiance to a company that can't meet your needs :o
If you can throw an elite x 450 and then throw a z pred the same distance, on a completely different line, then you've got it. One flips and travels at a slower maximum speed, the other starts out hot and right, and pulls itself back, then glides out. I would suggest the nex x crush, the Venom is incredible, and sooo fast. Once worked in, a FAntastic roller as well. I rolled a beat up Venom to the end of my practice field today, which I think was my farthest roller ever. A little over 7 maybe. I can't throw 500 consistently either, centainly not in comp!
