I am contemplating running a Speed Disc Golf event in the next few months. Looking for anyone out there that has run such an event. I have "borrowed" some rules of a Ball Speed Golf Site. The big question I have is the value of a stroke as far as time. In Ball Speed Golf it appears as if each strokes value would be a minute in time. (Minutes to play score = Total score).

It seems to me that since it takes twice as long to play Ball Golf that the value of a shoot/stroke should be reduced (possibly to 30 seconds). Below are the rules for Ball Speed Golf. Input appreciated!!

Scoring. Each minute, or any part thereof, exceeding your division requirement is added to the final golf score. Example: Open division player's strokes of 78 in 48 minutes 50 seconds provides a final score of 78. Open division player's strokes of 78 in 50 minutes, 3 seconds provides a final score of 80. Open division player's strokes of 78 in 51 minutes, 32 seconds provides a final score of 81.

Neil,

See http://www.pdga.com/discus/messages/40/5075.html?

I'd be interested in such an event. Doubles is really fun.

I believe that I hold the Kentwood Singles Speed record at 7:56 which is -8 at 15:56.

I think that each throw equalling for 1 minute is a good way to do it.

Please contact me about any Speed events.

I shot -8 in 2:42 at Rock Hill, SC (only it was on the 9 hole Fewell Park course)

If you shoot under par you should be rewarded by deducting 10 seconds off for every stroke under and 15 seconds for every stroke over par. Just a suggestion

Sep 30 2003, 12:31 AM
sorry I mean that you should add 15 seconds for every stroke over

Thanks for the input. I am looking to have the event at Cedar Hills Championship Course. I would like to make this a RADL event, but will need approval from the board and members.

I am looking at holding it, most likely, on a Sunday in December starting at 9AM, 1 round. There are 2 PDGA events that month in SC I might try to avoid those weekends.

Are you sure you want to hold this event at Cedar Hills? You'd hate to see someone slip and get hurt running up and down over those huge hills and rocky terrain.

Second Annual Texas States Speed Golf Tournament.

I am running the second annual mini speed golf event at Texas States (can you call it the second annual if no one came to the first annual?)

I ran this event last year for 18 holes and no one came. So this year I'm changing the format and positioning.

The event will be on Friday March 30th at 3:00 running till 5:00. The course will be ten holes, essentially the outer holes from the Powel and Tourny courses around the loop. for those that have maps:

Hole 1 = 15 Tourny
Hole 2 = 9 Tourny
Hole 3 = 10 Tourny
Hole 4 = 16 Powell
Hole 5 = 17 Powell
Hole 6 = 18 Powell
Hole 7 = 1 Powell
Hole 8 = 8 Powell
Hole 9 = 13 Powell
Hole 10 = 18 Powell

I will be running the event out of Tournament headquarters with the finishing line being at Tournament headquarters. The cost is $10 per entry.

I am adding $100 to the pool so, if as last year, no one shows up, all you have to do is come and walk the course and take home $100! Sweeeeet.

Here are the rules:

1. Players will be spaced out at 3 minute intervals. (I will give each competitor at least 3 minutes separation and more if there are fewer entrants)

2. There will be a starter and each competitor will be timed from start until they cross the finish line.

3. Each competitor will be assigned a number that determines their start position and that will be used to track them, and their strokes through the course.

3. On drop-ins you don't have to release the disc, only touch two chains, however, the stance must be legal, i.e. no falling putts! (a falling putt is a stroke as per the rules)

4. In the event that a player catches another on the course the player who caught the other (hereafter known as the out player) has the hole. The out player must clearly call fore before driving. The in player does not have to yield the hole, he simply has to avoid getting hit by the drive. In the event that the in player interferes with the thrown disc (is hit) he will receive a one stroke penalty. It is the duty of the out player to make sure the in player hears his call but it is the job of the in player to avoid the hit.
a. If both players approach the basket at the same time, the first player to their disc has the hole, the distance of the discs from the basket does not matter; however, if the players arrive at their discs simultaneously, the out player has the hole. In the event that the first player misses the putt, the second player putts before the first player putts again.
b. If both players approach the Tee at the same time, the first player to the box has the hole. However, if the players arrive at the Tee simultaneously, the out player has the Tee.

5. There is no O.B., however, a player can at their own discretion declare a disc lost and re-drive with a one stroke penalty. All lost discs can be picked up and remain in use. (note, this seems like a free pass, it's not, the cost is significantly more than 15 seconds)

6. There is no limit on the number of discs a player can carry (disc management is a skill).

7. Each stroke over par adds 15 seconds to your total time. If you are under par each stroke takes 15 seconds from your total time. The best time wins.

8. You may use the thrown disc as the lie or any disc in your hand to mark your lie, no mini is necessary.

9. There are two divisions, Men's and Women's, cash payout will be according to the PDGA Pro tables.

10. No two-meter rule.

11. A lost disc requires the player to re-drive from the Tee or lie. If the player drives and feels their disc is lost but isn't sure, they should throw a second disc and play it (i.e. take a provisional).

12. This event is on the honor system. Each player is responsible for keeping track of their own score. Scorecards will be located on each Tee sign and scores from the hole before should be recorded there. If a player forgets to score they will be given 10 strokes for that hole. Also, there will be officials on the course keeping track of strokes and any player caught cheating will be disqualified from the entire event.

Two other points to consider:

We will be running this on the outer Powell holes, essentially a 10-hole course.

Second, I am adding $100 cash to the pot and guarantee to pay two deep.

Pullcarts,

Congratulations! You now hold the Kentwood Speed record. (Assuming that you holed out on every hole because there are no gimmees.)

Your time converts to 12.8
Time + Throws = 12.8 + 48 = 60.8

Well, as I train for the Great 8 (this Saturday 07-07-07), I played a round of Speed again at K'wood. It's been over 3 years since I last played a Speed round, but, amazingly, I've gotten faster! I shattered my previous best time at K'wood of 15:56 by finishing in 14:09. Unfortunately my golf game is really rusty, so I only shot a 51.

Speed score = 51 + 14.2 = 65.2

What exactly constitutes an official round of speed golf? Do you start your stopwatch right as you're throwing hole 1 and stop it once you've holed out on 18 or can you stop it during the round at anytime? I shot 8 down at Cornwallis in 15:05 with no stoppage back on June 8th. Would of got 10 but had 2 bogeys. :p

An "official" round means you don't stop the watch until you pick up your disc from hole 18 basket. It has to be one continuous non-stop round. It wouldn't make sense to stop part way through. If you did that, then why not just stop after every hole, rest, and catch your breath?

cgoodwin
Jul 02 2007, 12:31 PM
Well that makes sense to me and thats the way my round was done. I was wondering because I was talking to Diamond Dave about speed golf about a month ago. I was asking about this because the times I've heard seemed incredibly fast and alot of times when playing you come up on other players or groups and it would have to cost you some time even when playing through. I thought he told me that sometimes he had to stop & restart his watch if this occurred. He may of just been talking about doing this during random rounds of speed golf because he plays this way a lot anyway, not necessarily trying to set a new record. Anyhoo it's fun to play this way on occasion and I'll have to try and improve on my score/time sometime soon. Maybe Kentwood next time.

This isn't the way I constitute a finish in my events. I make a finish line and you have to cross that line to be considered done. There are a number of reasons for this. While what Lowe does works for a casual Speed round, if you actually have an event, finishing at the basket makes it hard to get scores and finish out the round. Furthermore, what's finished, touching your disc? Picking it up? Clearing the basket? How to tell?

A finish line is a cleaner finale.

I start my round on the first Tee, basically, the disc has to be behind the front border of the Tee before the clock starts. That is, you could in theory, wind up, start your approach and hit your release just after the clock starts.

One other thing to think about, as an aside, and as you read up this thread, Lowe's method focuses on the game of disc golf. It disproportionately favors the stroke, thus putting much less pressure on speed than on a round of golf. There is nothing bad about that but if you're interested more in speed then think about a lower time per stroke. That pushes you to move faster because time on the course becomes more valuable.

Yes, I holed out every putt when carding the 46. Some of those times/scores on record are crazy fast! After I played that round I ran the Cornwallis course for fun without playing. I ran a decent pace crossing over each teepad and around the far side of each basket in relation to the next tee. I forgot to save the time in my watch but I think it took me around 8 minutes to do that.

18 holes
54 + 11:15/11.25
by Lowe's scoring: 65.25
by Lyle's scoring: 11.25

Though it would have been slower because it seems you play from teepad-to-basket... I was going by the rules set during AmNats where you can choose to either run to and play from next teepad or play from the basket you hole out on to the next basket. It made for a few definite cuts in time and a few shots where it is an interesting choice (risky route = possible cut in time, if you don't flub the tough shot! Big risk-reward factor).

Lowe... not sure if you have anything on record for Charlotte and I hadnt known about this thread until today but I did a round of 'speed golf' @ Renny Gold yesterday....

Took 38 minutes and shot a 74 (all 9400+ feet of it)

I wasnt sure of any rules so I did what I thought was logical... carried 3 discs.... used a mini or disc to mark my lie... didnt do any falling putts... and of course played all other rules by the book (OB, etc).... started the watch when teeing off @ hole 1... and stopped after I cleared my disc on 19 (which included running down the wood steps and up the hill since Stan moved 18 gold's basket)

Im sure my record could be broken since Im not in good enough shape to run the whole way (and i really only jogged any of it anyway... wouldn't call what I did running).... im sure a sub 30 minute round is out there (maybe if Diamond Dave makes a road trip! ;)

might try this on the other charlotte courses to try and get back to my running roots. Also saw posted somewhere that someone did winthrop gold in under 30 (27 minutes I think) so I might try that one to see how I stack up.

Stack,

Congratulations on setting the Renny Speed record! Sorry, but I only have time to keep records for the Triangle courses. My version of the rules of Speed can be found at Disc Golf Resources (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DGResources/) in the Files section under "General".

Stack,

I took the liberty to make one small adjustment to the rules. THat is that you don't need to use a mini to mark your lie. Here's what I use:
"You do not need to mark your disc. You have the option to set your stance behind the disc where it lies, or to flip the disc over."

lowe
Feb 05 2008, 04:58 PM
Here are the rules I've established in the Triangle:

Speed Disc Golf

Object: To get the lowest score by finishing 18 holes in the fastest time with the fewest throws

Equipment: You may use as many discs as you want to carry.

Rules:
Use a stopwatch and start the clock on hole 1 teepad
You must hole out on every hole. There are no gimmees.
You do not need to mark your disc. You have the option to set your stance behind the disc where it lies, or to flip the disc over.
 No falling putts.
OB throws must be played from the proper spot in bounds, and you add the usual 1 stroke penalty.
Stop the clock when youve taken the disc out of the basket on hole 18.
The 2 meter rule is not used.

Scoring:
Score = Throws + Time.
Add together the total number of Throws plus the Time in minutes (converted to a number). Since the number of throws is the most important aspect of disc golf this scoring method emphasizes the number of throws. Another advantage is that since it tracks the total number of throws courses with different pars can be compared.
1 throw = 1 minute. 72 is a pretty good score. A score of 54 is an awesome round.
For example: 52 Throws + Time of 25:30 minutes = 77.5

Team Speed

Object - For 2 players to complete the course in the shortest time possible with the lowest score.

Equipment: Each player may carry as many discs as they want (This is the multi-disc version as compared to a single disc version).

Rules:
(Same as for One person Speed.)
Start the clock on hole 1 teepad
 All PDGA rules apply.
Players alternate throws. After the drive the next player throws from the position that the previous throw came to rest until the disc is in the basket.
A disc must come to rest before the next throw is made. After the disc comes to rest in the basket, and is picked up, then the next player can drive on the next hole.
When putting, strategic decisions must be made. If a putt seems certain to go in then the next player to drive can safely proceed to the next tee and wait to drive. After the putt is taken out of the basket then s/he may drive. However, if the putt is missed then the partner must be at the basket to make the next shot.
Players may proceed ahead of their partner's tee shot or throw, anticipating where the partner's disc may land.
You do not need to mark your disc. You have the option to set your stance behind the disc where it lies, or to flip the disc over.
You must hole out on every hole. There are no gimmees.
OB throws must be played from the proper spot in bounds, and you add the usual 1 stroke penalty.
Stop the clock when youve taken the disc out of the basket on hole 18.

Here would be a fun twist for you Charlotte folks with such an active club. They've done this in England, and I read about it in DGW. Get as many people as you can together and see how fast you can complete 18 holes. There are 2 variations: A) use only 1 disc, B) use as many discs as you want with each player supplying their own discs. I can see advantages and disadvantages to each method. Please let me know if you ever do this. I think it would be a blast! What do you think the absolute minimum time to complete Renny Gold might be?

Im sure it can be done under 30 considering im not in my old XCountry shape I used to be in... Was talking with Rodney last night and he's going to give it a try.

As far as the rules... i followed all of those except like I said I used a mini on some.... I read that Randolph did falling putts @ winthrop but that didnt seem right to me so I played w/ legit putting.

Im thinking about going back out and trying it sometime soon w/ Wisco riding his bike and we'll swap after 18 and see how he does.

Im sure I can do it faster with getting into better shape but... i really did get lucky with shooting so well... not having to look for lost discs and being able to easily/quickly play through the 4 groups I ran across.

Tell me more about this team thing... how you would all play @ once?... gang golf but people can go ahead if they are fast enough or the whole group needs to hole out each hole?

I don't know for sure b/c I've never done it. Do you have old copies of DGWN? Look for what they did in England after a British Championship. You have to make up your own rules for it, but I think you have everyone spread out throughout the course.

A) For the 1 disc version the goal is to get 1 disc from tee 1 through each hole to basket 18. If you had 54 people you could place 3 per hole with each person ready to take the appropriate shot. If you have less people you have to decide how best to spread them out. It's a relay.

B) For the multi disc version you just have people use their own disc for the shot their taking. Again, it would depend on how many people you have how you spread out. It's a relay so player 1 tees off on hole 1, player 2 takes the 2nd shot from where shot 1 stopped, player 3 takes the next shot. I guess when the putter is pulled up out of a basket then the next player can tee off on the next hole. Shouts can be used. Depending on the size of the group I think each person would carry 3 discs because they might make any of the 3 shots.

Hey, I don't know if you've had your Ice Bowl(s) yet but this sounds like a perfect game for after an Ice Bowl. Nothing but fun and a group building activity.

update... grodney gave renny gold a shot and finished in 40 minutes shooting a 78... which makes me feel a little better since i think he's actually in good shape compared to me. ;)

Mike Randolph... "Winthrop Gold +3 29:45 USDGC"

That's just sick! I can't imagine dong a ~10,000 ft. course in under 30 minutes! I also can't believe he did it in 71 (+3)!!

On the gang speed thing... after thinking about it, if I was running it I'd do the 1 disc method. That way it's easier to standardize; just choose the disc carefully. Someone has to get the disc from each basket to the next tee. I'd allow it to be thrown from the basket to the next tee, though. I guess you could allow a person to tee off with their own different disc once the last disc arrived at the tee...

I'd love to hear of this being done. Mecca's the best place to try and pull it off. Get grodney to help organize it!

no kidding... i guess he did it with AO but i'd imagine they went ahead of each other instead of staying together. Only sidenote was I read they did allow for falling putts.

regardless... a very sick/nasty time!!! (and score)

Awesome! You've now set another Charlotte speed record. Do you use a stopwatch? If you mark the seconds too, it's even more accurate. Every 6 seconds = 1/10 of a point.

yeah... Renny was 38:19 and Sugaw was 18:43

im trying to do each course/layout just to establish times and hopefully help myself get back into shape and possibly get some of our other guys to give it a shot.

i'd like to think I could get renny below 30 and somehow shoot below 70 (but i'd just be happy with going below 30 first!)... sugaw maybe sub 15 sub par?

Im thinking Kilborne may be next... or Renny Original (but not for a little while)

I can't wait to get out and try some speed golf when it gets warmer. My best on our local course, playing by Lowe's rules, was a 14:12 with a 52. I think I was probably able to run a 6:30-45 mile at the time. Right now I've cut myself down to a 5:45, hopefully by spring I'll be under 5:30. I plan on blasting through a round of speed golf as often as possible this summer. :)

what's sad is that I feel so good about 5:45, and its a full minute off my best... I'm so out of shape...

another speed round on the books for me... after a couple hours of course work @ Renny tonight I decided to try and get a round in before dark...

Renny Original
23 minutes 17 seconds - shooting a 56 (new personal best by 3 strokes!)

As crazy as it sounds I'm pretty sure a sub 20 is out there to be had... just not by me w/ the shape i'm in (or not in) and not with ~1-2 minutes worth of searching for a disc I did on 1 hole.

funny thing was I passed a guy also trying a speed round on hole 16 and was done on 18 before he was even on the teepad

thinking of trying the WEB next?

So what rules are diffrent when playing speed golf?

the only thing I do differently is I dont use a mini (ill just throw from my disc or if I need the disc thats on the ground i'll toss the 2 i'm not using in that spot)... some allow for falling putts (i think randolph plays that way) and i know some that keep score in their head... i use a scorecard so I can be sure of what I shot and if I think of it write down my time at the 1/2 way mark or different spots on the course to see how long the front took vs the back.

thanks! ... i'm trying to do all of the courses/layouts in charlotte once before I do any of them again but who knows... kinda fun way to get back into shape and see how fast I can do it... still amazed that I shoot better running that taking my time. Seems i play worse the slower I go (maybe a reason for my poor tourney play ;)

Its super funny that this should be the top thread on the pdga techniques page - i did my first true speed disc measurement today at my local course, willamette park in corvallis, or. I bumped into a guy early this morning who said his best was a 62 at 15:31, pretty quick for a roughly two mile jog, but not a very good score. my best ever is an -11 or a 43, so I was pretty pleased to shoot a 49 in 16:15 with only one disc! Other than a mini I follow all pdga rules! not a very long or challenging course, so I bet there would be folks who could do it under 14 minutes and in the mid 40's. I'll keep practicing.

There is a guy who goes and plays at Rankin now with a 40 pound backpack. He is training for a big trek in August. Dude was moving pretty good when I saw him, although time probably wasn't a huge factor for him. The pack appeared to limit his distance as well!

I went out today and thought I was going to establish a speed round record at Johnson Street from the Blues. Boy was I wrong. I started out strong, park job on Hole 1, sprinted to the disc to drop it in. My body said, what are you doing. I was like, it will be okay, push on...Needless to say I ran past a few groups of shirtless college dudes and got to hole 7 in 7 minutes flat. Threw my disc, but could run no more. While picking up my putter and driver from the Tee Pad, I lost sight of the Roc I had just thrown. Had to look for it for a minute and a half, 8.5 minutes into it I was throw on 8, but could not run no more (did jog/probably shouldnt of done that). Ended up playing just the front nine and was about to pass out when I had finished. I didnt even have any water. College dudes finished their front nine and saw me in bad shape at the shelter (you know spitting on the verge on puking my guts), and stopped to ask me if I was okay. I told them I was good and called it a day. Got back to work and everyone was like, what the hell? I looked like ish, felt even worse and didnt even get a record. Just so you know, I finished the front nine in just under 10 mins. @ 9mins and 58 secs and shot a 1 over (28). I will never try that again, especially on my lunch break, what an idiot.

first of all... hilarious! ... 2nd... you ran xc before so you should know that your first mistake was 'sprinted to the disc' on hole 1 :DLOL

sounds like you also learned something I did the hard way as well... even though you're in a rush you have to watch your disc... wasted over a minute looking for a disc this last time playing renny orig.

I used to run XC too and am in less than good shape (much less) so thats why I started doing it. And honestly I dont run (or i should say jog) the whole time. I'm not in very good shape so there are def times when i'm walking the transitions between holes or up some of the hills, etc. Hope to get to the point where I can actually stay running the whole time.

dont give up and give it another shot... just pace yourself!
