I am starting to get calls about this and thought I would clear it up on the board. Lord knows John will never bring it up, he and his modest self.
I'll try to condense this for everyone.
John had a full lodge at the ranch in San Saba last weekend. He also had 3 guest camping from the Dallas area. Saturday night the three campers walked up to the lodge from their site. One of the campers was obviously on some kind of drug and was acting very strangely. The three campers left to return to their campsite but the odd acting one returned to the lodge. To ensure that his guest would not be pestered by this guy John took it upon himself to help the guy out. John spent hours talking to this guy trying to keep him under control. Finally John set him up with a cot in the pro shop which is next to John's bedroom at the lodge. John woke up in the morning, walks past this guy who is still sleeping on his cot and gets his coffee then makes himself comfortable in a chair outside the lodge. While John is talking with his mother on the phone the "odd" guy wakes up and thinks he is being held against his will or something to that effect. The "odd" guy preceeds to break a window in the door that leads into the lodge. Then goes into John's bedroom, find a shotgun, finds the shells, loads the gun, steps out the back door(which was unlocked) and SHOOTS JOHN!!
John was sitting about 100 ft away with his back to the shooter. Luckily the shotgun was loaded with bird shot and the "idiot's" aim was off and the shot hit John in his left buttocks and right calf. John got a helicopter ride from San Saba to Austin. The "idiot" was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. His buddies were arrested for possession of Meth.
John is doing really well. He is back at work in San Saba already.
Sorry for the length of this story.

Will John be okay to continue playing fantasy football?
Wow, JH sent me an email saying that he'd had some sort of incident over the weekend and that it would be a couple of days before he could get to something I asked him about. I had no idea HE GOT SHOT! He's a very resilient guy and I'm sure if he's already back at work, then all will be well.
Nonetheless, I'm sending my well wishes for a speedy recovery. No good deed goes unpunished, huh Rappin'?
John Houck shot by a disc golfer. It boggles the f'n mind.
Uh...take your time on that request. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Should be fine for fantasy football: It got him in the creative buttock, not the analytical one.
Thinking about it, it's amazing it hurt his leg. The hair on his calves is like Kevlar.
John. John! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!
Can we name the shooter? Or at least his friends? I want to make sure I never play a round with any of these people! And are we sure they are from Dallas?
Can we get some names of the perps?
This is a crime worse than stealing baskets, after all.
These morons need to be banned from disc golf.

Certainly glad to hear John's doing well and thanks for the gripping story, but couldn't the guy get a mulligan for his first shot of the day.
I don't think we need any names.
The shooter is in the San Saba county jail on the charge of assualt with a deadly weapon. I doubt he'll be on the course any time soon. The other two are out on bail, one on felony possession of methamphetamines, one on misdemeaner possession of marijuana, I believe.
Please do not bring drugs to San Saba. Or Wimberley. These beautiful properties are for golf, not drug use.

san saba news (http://www.sansabanews.com/news.asp) will have the info sooner or later, but not yet. looks like it only gets updated like once or twice a month. searching for "assault" looks like it should work... it found lots of court cases. and geesh, meth looks like the drug of choice for san sabites!

Wow John,
O.k., o.k., I know the rest of you feel real sorry for him..... But....... I'm totally pumped to have a compadre who's been shot!!! The legend of Houck continues!!!!!!
All kidding aside John, sorry to hear that someone grossly misused the trust and good will

Thanks, everyone -- I appreciate all the kind thoughts. And James' mulligan joke was quite good, especially for him.
But let's be clear on one thing: I was shot in the leg. I have 20 pellets and some shrapnel in my leg. Yes, some stray pellets (about 15) found their way to my posterior.
But I was shot IN THE LEG.
Thank you.

Why does everybody think the shooter was crazy? Did anybody think that maybe the guy was hungry after crashing from 2 days of speed and was too polite to beg for breakfast so he found John's gun, filled it with bird shot, and went out to shoot pheasant to surprise everybody with a feast, and John was sitting too close? I mean, give the guy a break. Cut him some slack. It was a simple mistake.
Nobody put Jed Clampett in jail for shooting out some food and causing an environmentally damaging oil slick

Mr. Houck, I take offense in your statement directed at me. How can any skill be used in a computer generated draft league? Sorry, that will be my last complaint other than Jamal Lewis and his 295 yard game and Dante Culpepper's injury and Jeff Garcia's 3 interceptions and the list goes on.
Was is steel or lead shot? This is important as it will significantly change the connotations of possible new nicknames... :-)

Thanks again, everyone, for your good wishes. I'm happy to say that I went for a walk on the property yesterday, and I even jogged a few yards. Stairs are still a little tough, but it looks I'm going to be just fine.
I really feel great, and more than anything, I hope that I learn my lesson this time. I once had a bullet miss my head by six inches. As the policeman responding said, "Yeah, Mr. Houck, you almost took the eternal nap." That shook me up, but over the years I pretty much forgot about it. This time I'm determined to remember that every day is precious, and not just because it could be your last.

This incident has caused John Houck to lose another Fantasy Football game. I hope you get well John.
Indianapolis having the most insane combecak in the history of the NFL, a bad call in OT, and a luccky field goal caused me to lose a fantasy game.
My opponent, had Pad Timmons, had Peyton Manning and Mike Vanderjagt. With four minutes left in the game, I had it sewn up. Then hell froze over.
Get your facts straight, Mr. Russian Wrestler.

And lucky me, I had James Mungro and my opponent had Michael Pittman. I had a 6 point lead going into last night and I watched Pittman run up and down the field in the 1st half. I was sure that I was going to lose. In Indi's flurry, Mungro scored and I somehow kept my lead. I'm sorry about your loss John.
