Has anyone heard from Eric? Last I heard he moved from Wimberly, Tx to North Carolina? I haven't seen his name in any box scores but we all know he's cashing if he's playing. Has yet another great Texas player ridden off into the sunset? J.D., Kenno, Sammy.
Eric has gained 50 pounds and hasn't thrown a disc in months, he says the only way he'll come out of retirement is if worlds is in Texas in 2002. Seriously though he hasn't been playing much if at all but could still cash no problem.

Other than posts from "El Chilie", is there any truth to the rumor he has started about 2002 Worlds being in Houston?
We should hear something by today the H.D.G.S. should let all of us know something by the end of the day.
H.F.D.S.!!!!!!!!!!!
And unfortunately, You probably will not hear anything today.
Ya Eric Marx will come out of retirement.

With that extra belly, think how much farther he'll throw!
I hope he does come back, he's the one who taught me how to throw.
At this point 2002 worlds doesn't have a home.

THAT BLOWS..
Well....Afdter the meeting last night, I can say Houston will NOT be hosting 2002 Worlds.
The arguments were good on both sides of the issue, but short notice, and potential for disaster weighed heavy on many. I personally voted for it, but I was not joined by very many when it was all said and done.
Soon, we will bring Worlds to Houston, but it wont likely be 2002. http://pdga.com/discus/clipart/sad.gif

Found him!!
Eric Marx is in Asheville, NC, and is still playing!
We tied for third at the Asheville B-tier about a month ago...He came from 7 strokes back in the last round to tie me. That old man can throw!
He was a really cool cat, and a class act.
Look him up (411), and tell him how much you guys miss him...DG needs more guys like him!
tell the old man we said hi. don't let him fool you. that dude has got skills....
I miss Eric's comments in the box...like at #12 at Pease. I recall him quoting Ron Howard from the Andy Griffith show: "I'm scared Paw". Then he would park the 513ft. position/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

If I'm not mistaken, I think Eric was a World Frisbee Junior Champ when he was a teenager. Maybe Bill Burns remembers?

Tom,
You were close. He was the ACU-I (collegiate) champion in 1977. Right after I won the campus ACU-I event at Purdue in 1978, the president of the Frisbee club, whom you know, Tom (he lives in Huntsville) said to me, "You should make it out of Regionals into the National Championships, except if this one guy is there". Of course, the one guy was the reigning ACU-I champion, Eric Marx, and he cleaned my clock, especially in distance.
We have been good friends ever since. We went on several road trips together, the most memorable was the round trip from Indiana to NJ for the 1982 WFC, and I can remember several extremely humorous quotes and actions, most of which could be shared in a public forum, but would not be as humorous to others as it was to me.
Cassidy,
I can picture Eric saying that, as he is wiping off his disc with the towel he has hanging out of the back of his shorts.
BTW, he is a former PDGA World Champion in the Pro Masters division.
Also, since this thread was revived, check out the post above made on Nov 7, 2001 at 703AM by Cong-TX. Miracles do happen!

Bill,
Just curious about the frisbee scene around Purdue during 1978 when you won the ACU-I event. I am alum and currently on staff at Purdue. Was there any disc golf being played? I started playing about 2 years ago and disc golf seemed fairly new to the campus and community at that time. Of course the scene has exploded in the last year or so.
Thanks,
John

John,
The Purdue Frisbee Club (actually, the Purdue University Frisbee Flippers, or PUFF for short) was started by Bruce Willis, a Guts player and participant in the World Frisbee Championships in the mid 1970s. The club was already there when I got there in the fall of 1977.
Bruce had designed an object course, a beautiful course in Horticulture Park. Back then, we only had Wham-O World Class Frisbees to use, and they were fairly light. He had a full 18 holes, and nothing was official, of course, because he knew full well that the administration would not approve of anything like that there.
In the summer of 1978, an 18 hole course was installed at the KOA in Lafayette, but it was only in the ground for a year or two, because the owner of the equipment (who also owned the KOA in Peru and ran the disc golf course there) didn't think it was making enough money. I believe that the baskets ended up at the S&M Campground in Greenfield, IN.
I would go play the course in Peru when my schedule would allow it. Once in awhile, I could get one of the guys from the Ultimate team to go (I was on the team, but I am not really a runner).
When I came back to campus for grad school in fall 1985, I spoke with Larry Preo, who was then running the Co-Rec and whom I believe is now running the Purdue Alumni Association. I gave him some DGA literature, and he seemed interested.
Out of the blue, in April 1986, I get a call from Brian Cummings from Munster, IN, and a few days later, he and the late Ed Headrick were on campus designing a course! It was on April 15th and it was flurrying! It was only a 9 hole course that was going to be installed, but Ed went ahead and laid out 18. He drove metal spikes in the ground to mark the tees and holes, so that someone with a metal detector could find them. We also made a crude map.
The course was installed during the summer of 1986. It started right off of Stadium Drive, west of the band shell, right at that little semi-circular parking lot at the crest of the hill. It basically did a counterclockwise loop of the area, starting at the southeast corner. It went up to that old house north of the parking lot, went in and out of some trees, then went toward the Theta Chi house, and from there, headed south then east back to the parking lot.
The "back 9" was laid out south of Stadium, and stayed near the street for the most part, because that's where the trees were. It went west, over and then past a parking lot off of Stadium that is across from Tower Acres, then came back to the east. It was never installed, as far as I know.
I understand that the course is no longer there. I am not sure when it was pulled.
I don't think that there were any other courses in the Lafayette area at the time, because if there were, I would have played them.
I understand that there is a course in a WLaf park now. Is it the same park with the giant hill used for tubing in the winter? Is there a course that is close to or on campus now? What has caused the dg scene to explode?
I'm only 20 yrs too late...
BTW, there used to be a plaque in the Bowling Alley at PMU that had my name on it due to my participation in the 1981 ACU-I Finals. Could you stroll around that area and see if there are still any ACU-I plaques up, and see if mine is still there?
Thanks for making me rack my brain. It was an enjoyable reminiscense.

Bill,
Thanks for the information. I have heard bits and pieces of information about DG in the area, but nobody I have talked to could remember much details. I like knowing the history of DG in my area.
The park with the tubing hill is Murdock Park in Lafayette. That course is still there. The Tippecanoe Disc Golf Club holds best shot there every Tuesday night.
The course in WLaf is at Ross Hills Park (out west of town along South River Rd.). We had 3 baskets stolen within a year and the course was pulled this April so we could reinstall the baskets with added security. The great news is that all of the reinstallation is done and the course should re-open next week (YEAH!!).
The DG scene on campus exploded due to Ross Hills Park. The course can accomodate many casual players and is located in a county park - making it a nice get away from campus. OXE, the Chemical Engineering Honor Society, held a disc golf tournament at Ross Hills this spring for Purdue students only - there was pretty good turnout.
The Tippecanoe Disc Golf Club was started in the late 90s. I am directing our first PDGA out at Ross Hills in October.
Thanks again for the information. PMU has undergone a lot of renovations in the last 5 years or so, but the Bowling Alley is still there. I will drop by to see if those plaques are still around.

John,
Are you a ChE?
I remember the myth E. Marx telling me he won a distance comp with a standard issue Whamo. It was all he had. Tattered shorts, holes in his shoes. Does he still keep his discs in a hobo bag on a stick across a shoulder?
I'd love to break down his sky roller, there are few that are his equal. I have no idea how he generates so much spin.
Wasn't he a runner up to Climo in the early 90's? I think he finished second by a stick to Harold Duval in 89?
Not many sky rollers to be thrown here in NC...unless you like climbing trees to get your disc. But Eric is still a DGin' PIMP.

No, I'm not a ChE, but my roommate at Purdue was. I am a plant scientist in the Botany dept.
I interacted with the ChE honor society when they organized their event, and spoke on behalf of the local DG scene during their tournament information meeting.

mr Marx was the first 'pro' i ever saw throw a shot, ever
ca. 1988, i was walking up on Zilker original #3 (375 feet) when this towel-hanging wirey-looking guy throws it over the trees, anhyzers down the fairway, slams into the trees by the basket, drops down for a head-banger, and calls it a lucky shot
for the record, it was a Phoenix, a classic trash-can-lid, available up to 190g or something, a aerodynamic forerunner, blah, blah
Cassidy, doesn't Eric still hold the red-tee record at Red Rock? 12-under or something?
yes. He caught the field during that Sunday morning red tee round and then won a playoff to win open with a 600ft. cut roller on the playoff hole #11/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Fun to watch.
For those that are curious about "the legend", his terror is still being unleashed upon unexpecting victims. Not too long ago, he shot a 46 (course record) at Richmond Hill Asheville NC, and I happened to be fortunate enough to watch Eric drain multiple 40ft plus putts that day. Somehow he manages to glide through the tee-box. When his heel starts to rotate......boom! I've never seen anything like it. For those of you that think you have heard the last of Eric Marx, your dead wrong. He will be back, and everyone will feel his wrath.
