With great sadness I bring the news that Matt "Homie" Lovasko of Munster Indiana died this week in an apartment fire. He was 22.
Matt is the PDGA Advanced Amateur points leader. He was a great player, a great person, and a great friend. I've posted pictures of Matt and some of his friends warming up before for this years Amateur Worlds. They're at:
http://www.indiana.edu/~cjgolden/pics/homie/
Matt will be deeply missed by the disc golf community.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Matt's family and friends.
We will ensure that Matt is mentioned and remembered this weekend at the Texas State DGC in Houston!
My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. I did not have the pleasure of playing any rounds with him at World's but did play in the Mixed doubles against Tony. Would appreciate an email address for Tony as I have a picture or two from the mixed doubles he might want. It saddens us all to lose a fellow golfer. May his spirit live on.......
Wow... http://pdga.com/discus/clipart/sad.gif Wow.... Matt was one cool guy. I'm absolutely stunned... My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.
I am deeply saddened to hear that the world has lost such a fun loving person. Matt was a great golfer and very enjoyable to be around. I will miss seeing him this weekend. As I know he would have been at the Channahon Classic. I hope all that attend will remeber him as they golf this weekend.
To his family I am sorry for your loss. He was a great person to be around and will be missed.
May the golf gods enjoy his company for all of enternity.
He will be with us always, in our hearts and prayers.

WOW,
As if the nation hasn't suffered enough, I would also like to send my prayers for Mat, his family and friends. I met Homie a few years ago and eventhough I'm from WI and only saw him occasionally, we also chatted and shared a laugh or two.
I will NEVER forget him or last year when I was at an Indiana event where he aced the VERY first hole of the round and then ACE his very last hole of the 24-hole round. I will have that round and my other great golf memories forever in my heart. I hope the course 'upstairs' is a great one because you deserve the eternal happiness.
Sincerly,
Terry Miller

Thats where I grew up playing, with guys Like Brian Cummings. Never met the Homie but my thoughts are with his family on these tragic days. Munster and Riverside Park are full of great people and I'm sure he will be deeply missed.
Sadly I did not get the opportunity to meet Matt, my thoughts go out to his family and his discgolf brothers and sisters that he left behind.
This was a huge loss in the disc golf community. Matt was an awesome competitor and also an awesome individual. Not only will he be missed in the Indiana area, but also in the Michigan area as he traveled to many Michigan tournaments. My deepest sympathy goes out to all who call Matt family or friend.
Just called my brother and two uncles back in NW Indiana and only person home was granny. She said they were deeply hurt by the loss and will be attending the funeral. Sounds like one helll of a guy. Any info I find out about helping with the family I will pass on to all of you. My uncles and brother dont get on the Board much and maybe we can help them out as well as NY and DC.

heard of matt through a non disc golf friend and the amount of support and reverence this community showed a fallen brother is extremely touching
Don't know how I missed this thread originally.
Much love to Homie's family...We'll throw a disc on Sunday in Raleigh, NC to remember our brother.

I remember one of Homie's buds came down for the Southeastern Classic a couple years ago, It was right after his death, if i remember correctly. It was a very emotional weekend, everyone wore a black ribbon in his memory, not sure if anyone but his bud (I can't remember his name, Sorry)knew who Homie was. Hole 15 (Hornets Nest) was named in Matts honor and in the 3rd round his buddy hit a freak ace on that hole, where his disc sailed over the top of the basket, hit a small tree then bounced or sprung back into the basket.
One of my most memorable tourneys!
Dave Bundy was the one who hit the Ace, I was in the group. It was awsome. I think Homie put it in for him just to let him know he was there./msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

yeah that was him, Dave Bundy, thanks Jeff, you know how us masters are, C R S. haha
Wish I had seen it, I'm sure it was a sight to behold!

We are still healing in NW Indiana from the loss of our friend. We held the second annual HOMIE memorial tournament a few weeks ago at Lemon Lake in Cedar Lake IN and we had groups of 5 on every hole...36 holes!! Homie's mom and step dad added $1000 to the purse and fed everyone lunch and dinner. We had our one minute of noise for Matt...he is missed....

Bundy hit that ace at the Southeastern Classic and won a basket (or maybe it was donated?). That basket is now hole 3 at Lemon Lake...the first of the 2 holes Homie aced that round. It says 'In loving memory of Matt 'HOMIE' Lovasko' on the yellow chain support. We manicure that hole to perfection and have been talking about planting a memorial stone near the basket as he has no stone now....
Thanks to the guys running the Southeastern Classic. It was very emotional when Bundy told me the story and those guys are world class in my book for giving Homie and Bundy their props....

The story goes like this.
There was a ctp on hole #15 at Hornets nest with a "Homie" roc as the prize. David said that this would have been Matt's favorite hole. The shot came up short and hit a root that deflected it back in. The guys on the bench at #16 said it was like someone picked the disc up and guided it into the basket.
At the awards ceremony with everyone in tears. Nature Boy Billy Crump decided to give David a basket for the ctp. The most memorable tournament I have ever been too. There is a whole thread about this somewhere tucked away on here. The tournament that is and what everyone felt.

Let the tears fall as great memories of a great person.

Eleven years ago on September 19, 2001, Matt Lovasko was tragically killed in an accidental fire in his Munster, IN apartment. At the time, Matt was the top rated amateur disc golf player in North America. Because of Matts love for the sport, his mother (Charlene Lovasko-Donovan) and step-father (James Donovan) decided that the best way to celebrate Matt's life would be to organize an annual memorial disc golf tournament. At Lemon Lake, we called Matt "HOMIE".
Since the first tournament in 2002, the Matt Lovasko Memorial Disc Golf Tournament also known as "The HOMIE Fall Celebration" has been held at Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point, IN. This years event will be held on Saturday, October 6th for all Juniors, Recreational and Intermediate players and Sunday, October 7th for all Advanced and Pros beginning at 9:00AM. Information on the Tournament can be obtained by contacting Jay Svitko at 219-771-3472 or Brian Cummings at 219-712-6210. As many as 300 players are expected to participate in this years event which will feature lots of great food, prizes and fond remembrances of Matt Lovasko. We hope you'll join us this year.
