We know all about the big guys who perennially finish top 10 at Worlds . They tour all year and maybe work for a disc maker on the side.
My question is: Who is the golfer who doesn't play that many tournaments, is maybe married and has a few kids, has a "real" job unrelated to disc golf, and comes out and is competitive with the top players?
Great question, Special K.
Barry's World Games application had letters from people who stated that he has a "real" job, but I'm not sure what he does. Of course, he probably plays too many tournaments to fit into your question anyway.
In 1999, Jeff Harper would have to be in that list. But I think he played quite a few more tournaments in 2000. Or at least it seemed like it.
Others?

Larry Leonard. Oh, no wait, you said WITH a life! HAHA.

Sorry, Craig, need the wife and kids to play this game.
I'm going for players who's lives are most like mine. It will give me the hope that one day, given my circumstances, I will dominate.

I second the vote for Jeff Harper. He lives in Iowa, he has a wife and two kids, a real job, sings in the church choir, designs fantastic disc golf courses, and he came in 18th, 19th and 25th at the last three Pro Worlds. Poster Boy for the sport. Love ya Jeff!!!!

Craig you are slaken get over it don't evrn try walk a day in my shoes. J.G
I would have to vote for TJ Lawrence. He went to the PDGA World Championships once and finished 4th, currently has a player rating over 1,000, and wins a bunch of PDGA events every year. His family/job keeps him from traveling much.
He also won the Bob West Memorial Sportsmanship award last year.

In our area there are a few that come to mind. Definately Joe Mela and Jim Myers. Both have put courses in, both have full time jobs (Joe may have more than one), and both head up their local clubs. Oh yeah, Jim won the Worlds, and Joey has been knock'en on the door of greatness for years, 2nd at the 95 worlds, Open.
Another is Delaware's Tim Kady, whose been winning big events for years and years. He's got more than his share of victories over the afore mentioned players. And get this he's got 9 year old triplets! He's going to run his first event this year in the Delaware games. He's our "Hometown" Tim Kady.
Stan "The Man" McDaniel - working full time with 4 kids, heavy into church and somehow finds time to design/build courses. If Larry Leonard would get a job......

Folks,
The standard is just a little vague: ie.., "The best disc golfer with a life". Now, the best disc golfer in the world with a "Real Job" is Scott Martin, as demonstrated by being the first and only recipient so designated in a Disc Golf World News article by some irrelevant scribe at a past, unknown time. However, it seems that "a life", as defined by this continuing thread may require a real job, a real game, plus a wife and offspring (it is unclear if paternity testing is required, and if so does it also require an Order of Filliation, properly signed and notarized by a sitting Judge of the appropriate jurisdiction?)
While Scott certainly has "Real Game" (He can kick your ***** and laugh at you but he generally only snickers at you under his breath) and a "Real Job" (some high tech thing dealing with making precise industrial measurements much smaller than blonde pubic hairs) and a "Real Wife" (Dana, who is a doll and far too good for him), the offspring part may be lacking. He does have two dogs, but no apparent offspring!!! So where do we go from here?
By all reports, Stan Mc Daniel fills the bill. But is he truly a disc golfer? Can someone with no visible bad habits be considered a "disc golfer". If someone who has undeniable game, job and family but does not smoke, drink, or swear (does he fart-can we get an affadavit from an eyewitness/nose witness here?), does that person fully qualify under the low traditional standard of disc golfer. Maybe the Mother Teresa Humanitarian Award or something but "disc golfer"? Since we happily embrace our scum buddies, should we exclude Stan just because he is more virtuous than us? But hold on for a moment! Should we discount his virtuosity because his wife is way hot and he has no reason to drop to the depths of depravity we succumb to? Do we have someone with a PhD in Philosophy or comparable training or life experience who can answer these issues? And what do conclude of his well known nickname; Satan? Do we overlook it merely because it was given to him by Carlton Howard? Or do we consider that Carlton spends a greater percentage of his time throwing frisbees and fishing than anyone outside of the Lissaman Brothers, so therefore, who would know more about the under oath, swear to God, truth? Huh? Eh?
How about Dr. Rick Voakes? Where can we nitpick here? Is merely healing sick children enough to qualify as a job? While he definately has game have you seen the nerdy hat he wears in cold weather? A sort of rumpled baseball cap with fold down ear muffs? Could we really grant such a prestigious award to such an individual?
Maybe we should just annoint Vinnie Miller who has the apparent qualifications (job, wife, kids, if we can believe him) plus the modesty to claim his game is suspect ( Ha! Vinnie has game) plus the good sense to vote for me!
I have no life and no game but exceptional excuses which clearly demonstrate it is not my fault, in any way, not even a liitle bit!
I hope I have clarified things.

I don't get it... this post is pointless. Unless you are very mentally stable and have a powerful mind and good muscle memory, there is NO way that you can be a top pro without much practice. The only way around this is if you have been playing sice the 80's and you have a long time memory and only need to play once a month haha...

Actually Michael, the reason these guys are so good is because they have natural talent. I'm not sure about Scott but I don't remember any of the other guys hanging around in the am ranks for years before turning pro. They had the talent and desire to compete at the top level and to hold down a fulltime job and a life. I am a product of practice and as I've gotten older and lazier, it has become evident in my rapidly falling player rating.

What do we know about Jesper's life?
Jesper has a girlfriend and works as a bread salesman, driving his truck and delivering to stores. He plays around 10 tournaments a year because they dont have more than that in Sweden. He does play in his local league though, and practices around four times a week. He usually practices a lot off course, just throwing different shots in a field or doing some putting and indoors in the winter

I don't know if Scott can be considered the best lefty in the world anymore. I think Keith Warren might give him a run for his money. Keith had a higher player rating than Scott all last year, now that they updated the ratings, Keith is only 1 point behind him ( 1019 - 1020 ) I think that's a little too close to call one player better than the other :)

Ive had a lot of bad years with my health... So I couldnt continue to play at the level I would like to play. Still playing though, like Jeannie showed you
In these days I spend much time teaching others about technique and how to play the game "right". I am also involved in the swedish federation, and a discgolf site in sweden (with the biggest disc database online) www.discgolfsweden.se (http://www.discgolfsweden.se) We are working on an english version.... I also spend much time working on our pay to play course which recently maintained a new 2 floor building with a shop and a caf. The top floor we are planning to rent out for weekends to traveling players, own kitchen, shower, relaxroom, and at least 12 beds. I also run one of Swedens biggest tournaments, Skelleftea Open. So you can say Im very much involved in the sport
I think I will never stop playing as long as I can walk...

Alright, i stand corrected. You have a very good arguement there for sure, heeren. I guess i forgot about keith being lefty. The one thing keith has on his side, no doubt, his age. Where as scott is kind of winding down his golf career a bit. No doubt scott held that title of worlds best lefty for many, many, years though. Keith is rapidly accending to that crown now. :D

I'm surprised no one has mention David Greenwell, he has had a life his entire career and to this day (age 50!) is as competitive as ever.

Maybe at the USDGC to.
If you go back a page or 2, you will see that i did mention Darrell along with Jesper. There are a lot of people who fit the mold for this "best golfer with a life". Like Mark and, Todd W were sayin', it kind of depends on your personal perspective of what a "Life" is. After analyzing my previous stance on this subject, I believe that is too close to call. But I will give you my personal finalists. Jesper Lundmark. Darrell Nodland. Keith Warren. John E. McRay. Snoop Dogg(Walt H.). Stan McDaniel. Scott Martin. David Greenwell. There were a few that I excluded only on the basis that they have been "On Tour" recently. :p :D

I'll throw my local guy's hat into the ring... Micah Dorius.
Pro argument: Doesn't tour, runs his own business, and has a wonderful wife Claudia. Perennial top ten player rating. Perennial threat at majors he does attend. Is not only competitive but wins tournaments against big competition every year.
Cons: No kids. Running his own landscaping business does allow him plenty of practice time in late afternoons.
