Where disc golfers may soon wish to surrender!
It was my privilege to help clear holes three, four, and five today at the future dg course in Appomattox County, VA today.
This will surely be a course that all Virginians will be proud of...
I'm expecting my invite in the mail anyday now Vince.
I'll bring some boys up from NC for the debut.

Front nine is blazed! Four chainsaws cleared holes 6 and 7 today, which basically finished the major tree cutting on the front. I've heard that all 18 Mach 3s and their sets of collars have arrived. Time to finish the back nine which will include blazing seven more holes through the woods.
Volunteers gladly accepted! Two of the people that help drive two hours to do so... They are warriors, they are dedicated. Workday this Sunday morning, October 9th! !
WooHoooo, this course will be awesome for VA, kind of be like the Grange (Darkside) but longer with par 4s.

We blazed fairways for holes 12 and 13 Sunday! With holes 14, 15, 17 and 18 left to cut.
Gary brought out one of the Mach 3's today, they are sweet!
This course will also have cement pads and nice signs.
Thanks should go to Chuck Van Duser, Gary Gilliam, Charles Ferrell, Mitch Hoeppner, Mike Richards, Frank and Soda Pop Gonzalez for coming out and providing labor the last three weeks.
No workday this week is planned, I will post the next one as soon as we decide.

This is great! Too bad Appomatox is so far from Mathews, 'cause I'd be there. I didn't get enough of that at Walnut Creek or the home course. I need to cut some trees down Man!

On Saturday Nov. 22nd I helped remove brush from fairways 2 and 3 today along with help from Chuck Van Duser, Gary Gilliam and a handful of non-disc golfers. We got a lot accomplished in a little time. Props to all that helped.
Soon I will be meeting a gentleman at the course who offered an auger to help dig hole to plant the baskets. I will try to get most of holes 1 thru 10 pins dug. After that, planting baskets won't be to far off.
We still need to clear brush on holes 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, and 13. Then cut & clear holes 14, 15, 17, 18. Then plant baskets. Then play. Then pour concrete pads. Then play.
Thanks again to all that have helped!!!
Where exactly is this course? I may be able to help.

The course is 2 minutes East of Appomattox, VA... About a mile off of US 460. I'll let you know next time we'll be out there if you like. Thanks

Williams Gas-Pipeline offered used of an 8-inch auger and provided three very nice gentlemen to use it. I went out there yesterday morning to meet them and less than an hour later they had dug holes for baskets 1 thru 10. Thank you Williams!! Hopefully we will plant the baskets in the not too distant future.
Work day tentatively set for Sunday, but weather looks like it might be an issue.

18 collars are firmly cemented in the ground thanks to some hard work from five disc golfers! We finished them up tonight just before dark, basket hanging celebration tentatively scheduled for next weekend! WoooHoooooo

Vince, It sounds like you folks have put alot of work into the Appomattox course. I cannot wait to come down and check it out. So I hear the big day is Saturday, I have to work, but I would definitely like to hook-up with you guys in the near future and "surrender to Appomattox". Take it easy.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm sure you'll like it. It probably isn't too awful far for you either. It's about 20 minutes past Lynchburg on 460. I'll get Greg to let you know next time we come down. :D

Yooo, wassup ? Thought I would keep this thread alive. When is the course gonna "officially" open?
What's up Jeff, long time no see. I talked to Mitch about a week ago and he said they are still not sure when the course will officially open, but he would let me know. BTW, I hope you can play in the Commonwealth Games this year. Me and a coworker are running it, hoping for a good turnout. It will be at Golden Hills (aka Hokie Hollow, Christiansburg) this year. For details go to www.commonwealthgames.org (http://www.commonwealthgames.org) . Talk atcha later, Matt Newsome

The disc golf course in Appomattox is not open to the public yet. I will make a big announcement when the time comes; it'll probably be a few more months.
Matt? Wow! A Hokie on the Message Board, I never thought I'd see the day... (Must be using a Mac :D)
PS Matt and Jeff, send me your e-mails so I can put you on the local disc golf mailing list.
Sounds good Vince, can't wait to play there. From what Mitch says it's going to be a tough but great course. I knew you of all people would appreciate a Hokie poster on here ;) BTW, I heard through the grapevine you shot 7 down on the blues at Golden Hills  Congrats!

What's up Matt. Your right, long time no see. I had the pleasure of "sneaking in" to the Appomattox course about a month ago. I still am struggling with the right words to describe it, as to call it "challenging" is a big understatement, but I did have a great time as my score went higher and higher.

Allow me to post the first thoughts on this topic. Yesterday was my second visit to the course and I have been around it 4 times now, so my knowledge of the course is not as great as some others' might be, but I'll put my 2 cents worth in. Here it goes
AM PAR :
3 4 4 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 29
3 4 4 4 4 4 4 3 3 - 33 - 62
#11 is a borderline par 3 / par 4 for Am players, but I feel confident that i have the others "right". I won't offer my thoughts on what Pro par shoud be, but I can guess that it would fall between 56-59. But what an awesome course this is! It offer's alot of potential for growth to the sport of disc golf in the southside area.

On second thought, 11 a probably a par 3 for am's, but 3 and 14 are the holes that are on the "line" so to speak. For an am to get a 3 on those two would definitely gain them a stroke on the majority of the pack, but on the other side, most pro's should make thier 3 there, a four would cost them a shor to that pack there. So, my final answer :
Am Par - 61
Pro Par 59

When is this course "officially" opening, anytime soon?
whorley
Jun 28 2004, 07:05 PM
I wish that I had an answer for you, but I assume the park is not going to be open for at least another couple of months. Believe me, when I get the answer, I will anounce it and there will be a tournament soon thereafter.
My estimate for course par will be 62 for ams and 60 for pros. WCP will be somewhere between 53 and 56 from the white tees, the WCP for the blues will be closer to real par.

Hey Whorley, nice new pic there. Isn't that the "Bowling Stud" from The Big Lebowski? Hey, did you ever get in a round while you were at Myrtle Beach? I'm going down next week and I might be sneaking my bag into the car.

It was actually Mike R. that went to Myrtle Beach, and no, there is not a course there. The closest course is Wilmington (I've heard it's a good, challenging course with weekly doubles on tues). Let me know if you want directions. :D

Posted by Whorley on another thread:
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Elk Creek Disc Golf Course is August 14th, 2004 at 11:00am. This will be a big deal with Town-Councilmen and other big-wigs in attendance. Please feel free to attend the dedication of the course, which will be followed with refreshments at 12:00. **This is not the opening of the park--This will happen when the park road is paved(few weeks/months)**
At 1:00, there will be an informal disc golf tournamentfor $10 with all proceeds going to the girl scouts. We encourage everyone to attend and give back to the scouts, who have raised over $14,000 for this course!!!
The course is long and wooded with the white tees in the 5000+ft range. There will only be a few cement pads in by the 14th, the rest are rough/natural. The course has Mach III baskets, with excellent tee signs. I predict that the SSA for the course will be 51-53 range from the white tees and into the 60's from the blues. Pro par for the course is ~60 from the whites and ~64 from the blues.
Please PM me or email me if you want directions. As soon as the paved road goes in, I will post the directions on the PDGA Course Directory.

Bringin' it out of the cellar. Any discs been flying at Appomattox recently? I was down over Labor Day weekend and had the place to myself for 4 hours or so. The road was in the process of being built then, but I'm sure the rain that has fell in the time since then has most likely delayed that job, I hope the wind last Friday didn't do any damage either.

Great workday! We had 11 folks out there installing the red (Rec) tee pads. We also started installing the tee signs and a few benches. We need to have a few more workdays like that in the near future. I will let you know.
