The two guys in the picture were at Pease one Saturday morning last winter. They were taking pictures and talking to people to prepare their proposal.
Wow! thats cool,I wonder if someone will be running a discgolf event there next year, sounds like a nice course.

ah darnit!
Gonzales is just north of Westhoff where I used to live and just west of Shiner Bock Brewery where I used to drink. Y'all otta be able to find it now!
Ok Gonzales is on U.S. Hwy 183 between Austin and Victoria with Luling to the north and Cuero to the south. I am not sure of the GPS coordinates. Looking forward to playing the course when I visit my in-laws during the holidays. That should be more than enough info for you guys. Props to Mr. Houck and Mr. Himing for the their continuing support and promotion of disc golf in the Lone Star State.
We need to get a group together and go INVADE FOR A DAY. I know a good fishing spot as well. Who wants to go?

Iceman, anyone bite yet on your fishing trip. I'm tenatively in depending on the date.
You guys are way behind. It's nice to live in Victoria. Played it today. Very nice, very Riversidish. Can't wait to play it again.
Having driven through that part of Gonzales a few times I would guess the course doesn't have much elevation changes or does it?
LouMoreno
Oct 13 2003, 11:55 AM
Iceman, when were you planning to head out there?
Haven't had any takers. I am trying to change my schedule at work to 3 12hour shifts on weekends. It ain't that far so do you have time during the week. I am hoping that this week will be the change. If so I will have 6 days off and we can go any time. Taking a year off of tournaments to practice so I will be playing as much as I can. I plan on taking myself out of the ZT10 FINAL. That's how bad I've been playing.

I get out at 4:30. I don't think that's early enough to get to Gonzales and play a round before dark, especially not once the time changes.
LETS PICK A WEEKEND SOON. I DON'T THINK I WILL BE CHANKGING MY SCHEDULE THIS WEEK.
LouMoreno
Oct 14 2003, 04:16 PM

Is this a full 18? Anyone have any hole descriptions or footage? Is the place mowed or well kept?
james_mccaine
Dec 12 2003, 01:06 PM
It is a full 18. I've never seen anything on line or anything that describes the course. It was well-maintained when I played it and I suspect it will continue to be maintained.
It's a great course and people slow down in the street to gawk and see what you're doing. In your case, they'll gawk and wonder "is that Mr. T? It is, isn't it? Call aunt Mabel, let her know." Before you know it, everyone in Gonzales and the neighboring towns of Belmont, Bebe, Smiley and Shiner will be lining the course, cheering on your every shot. After you tap in for birdie on eighteen, they will carry you off in a triumphant frenzy to the finest eatery in town, the Whataburger.
Oh, I'm sorry, I got carried away there. Y'all will be the only ones on the course. Good luck finding the holes. ;)

Jay Reading, Mark Atwood and I just got back from a great day in Gonzales. It really is a fun course and deserves to be played by a lot of people.
Our host for the day was awesome. Lunch was provided to us, we got the local tour and even had cold S...... delivered to Hole 10 for us in koozies. I will let Mark and Jay say how good the local barbecue was.
It is only 40 miles from San Marcos heading down Hwy 183. A very easy drive. The course is a good mixture of long and short holes. It was extremely windy today while playing which didn't help the scores.
Chris Himing - 55
Jay Reading - 55
Robert ?? - 62
Mark Atwood - 67
One highlight of the day was the local jail tour. I will try to post later the pics we took. A little scary standing atop the real gallows with a noose around your neck. 6 people were hung from there.
More good news of Gonzales very soon.
Thanks
Chris
thanks a lot for posting that score, my good friend. sheesh!
despite the beating i took, i have to say that this was not only an enjoyable day trip to an interesting little piece of texas history, but a fine course as well. its very balanced, as my score posting friend pointed out, between long and shorter holes. it makes excellent use of the available elevation (more present in the tougher back 9), and plays through and around some beautiful and large old trees. its in a park that will be easy to maintain and keep mowed. it also flows fairly well, with the only long walk between holes being from the side the front 9 is in to the back 9. and i must say that even this walk (which isn't too long, by any means) will be one of the more picturesque areas of the park as the city completes work on installing an historic old wooden and steel river bridge, purchased to be moved and placed in the middle of this park. that work is nearly complete and could be wrapped up as soon as the end of '03.
this is a great addition to texas disc golf and i can't wait to have another crack at it. i'm guessing that even in that wind (which was ridiculous), i could've shot about 6-7 strokes better. i'm looking forward to having the chance to prove it. :)
fun day, gonna sleep now. :)
james_mccaine
Dec 17 2003, 09:55 AM
Ahh, nothing beats a round of disc golf and then a tour of the gallows. :)
Is this like a hint for those that will be attending the tournament? or simply the natural inclination of any city official when seeing y'all? ;)

Actually I was thinking more like DFL James.
Keep Saturday March 27 free. That should be the first event in Gonzales. I will confirm more very soon. Would you like a PDGA one day event in Gonzales?
Jay and Mark don't want to me to do the awards at the jail. I would promise to have at least candle light. Could be interesting, the first ever event where the awards are done by candlelight. The bars and the gallows surrounding you could change the mode however. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

A one-day PDGA event in Gonzales would be great. It's a great location for golfers in Central Texas, Corpus Christi, or Victoria. Even those Houstonians could make it in a couple hours. However, don't expect any metroplex golfers. The jail story will scare them off. ;)
I've never had the barbeque, but I heard it was in some book on the the best barbeque joints in Texas.

Mark was probably sweating bullets in there, just hoping the jailer wouldn't turn around and look at the "most wanted" poster behind him. Jay, while a clean living soul, has heard those stories of cowboy justice gone awry and just didn't want to chance it. :D

Hole 2: 257 - uphill anhyzer. Basket protectected by trees
Hole 3: 318 - straight at it.
Hoel 4: 603 - fairway has scattered trees on both sides. Huge oak protecting the basket.
Hole 5: 276 - hyzer and anhyzer there around big oak.
Hole 6: 178 - anyhzer, side-arm with trees infront of basket.
Hole 7: 252 - tight tunnel through trees
Hole 8: 288 - can't remember. Straight shot, I think.
Hole 9: 801 - one of the best holes on the course. Long and downhill at first. Uphill after that with trees on both sides of fairway.
Hole 10: 278 - small hyzer through trees
Hole 11: 260 - anhyzer to pin. Lots of tree coverage.
Hole 12: 260 - uphill straight away. trees on right of fairway
Hole 13: 237 - uphill straight away
Hole 14: 483 - uphill. pretty clear until 60ft from pin with tree coverage.
Hole 15: 280 - downhill with low tree lim infront of teebox. Large oak in front of pin with scattered trees along the fairway.
Hole 16: 894 - downhill. Let it ride. Large line of trees makes 2nd shot very tough to manage.
Hole 17: 212 - small tunnel shot or go wide with the side-arm.
Hole 18: 516 - another great hole that plays along a small creek bed. Anhyzer over the creek, uphill with trees along the right side of fairway. Great hole to finish on.
Come get some:
1 - 3
2 - 3
3 - 2
4 - 3

Hey J.A.B, what did you think of #9 (I think that's the number - last hole of the front before you cross the road that separates the two areas of the course?)?

There's nothing from WVA!! :D
Except Senators who were former Kleagles in the KKK (http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/8991).
The same senator who spent 14 hours speaking in an attempt to fillibuster the Civil Rights Bill; the same senator who said he'd rather die a thousand deaths than to serve in the military with blacks; the same senator who didn't vote to confirm Justice Thurgood Marshall because of his race; the same senator who voted against Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas.
Seriously...how has Sen. Byrd --- a KKK racist --- been reelected as West Virginia's senator since 1958? You all do know he was a Kleagle in the Klan, right?
Laugh all you want about "steers and queers", but there's nothing funny about a Klansman Senator.

The best BBQ in Texas...some might try to tell you that it's the Salt Lick...but when it comes to brisket...I'm partial to Rudy's extra moist brisket

Lot's and lot's of good pits out there. Riding around most anywhere from Texas to Carolina on a Thursday or Friday night and you pick up a whiff of hickory or mesquite smoke on the breeze, track it down. But if the meat on said pit didn't come from either side of a hogs *****, then it just ain't BBQ, no matter how you slice, pull or chop it.

After KC wide open, we went to some "famous" BBQ joint in KC. It was very ordinary. It wouldn't cut it in central Texas. Now I figure that there actually is good BBQ in KC, so noone (but Tony of course) get their feathers ruffled, but I'm not trusting a midwesterner on the best BBQ. No way. No how. :p

This is very true, although a good brisket is mighty fine eats. See James, a midwesterner can learn... :)

We can mos def agree on a good brisket, as long as we don't call it barbecue. My best buddy growing up in south Georgia migrated farther south and took up in the Melbourne, Florida area where he came under the influence of some expat Houstonians who instructed him well in the ways of brisket and tri-tip. Very good eats, ah ha!

Hmmmmm . . . brisket! Anybody got a good recipe to smoke a brisket? My Dad has an electric smoker he is willing to let me have so I can practice on smoking a brisket. There is a guy in my home town (Stephenville, TX) that gets up before the crack of dawn to smoke brisket for about 18 hours. That was some tender meat - you don't need your teeth to eat that brisket!
