I just spent a weekend in KC and managed to play Water Works (twice), Swope, and the two Rosedale courses. I have to say that KC is a great town for disc golf. The courses are varied, easily accesible, and fun to play.

Water Works is the jewel of the batch, with a great variety of challenging tee shots and precarious pin placements that take advantage of the rolling hills and mature trees. I was very impressed with the signs, benches, and tee pads.

Swope was less challenging with great potential (I can't wait to see the Gold layout). The lower course at Rosedale is "old school" (modified Mach I baskets?), featuring short, technical woods holes. Forget your bag, all you need are two putters. The upper course is wide open, but the wind kept it somewhat interesting (You could make an awesome 18 hole course by combining the two).

KC features great food, great people, and great parks. Can't wait to get back. DD

David, now you know why so many people attend the KC Wide Open every year, and why Kansas City has hosted Worlds.

DD, we've got 2 more courses on the way and there's a tourny at one of them this weekend - Blue Valley. It plays nearly 10,000 feet! Go to KCFDC.org for more details...
Both Swope and Rosedale-up-top can be stretched to around 8,000'. IMHO, Rosedale plays as tough or tougher than Water Works due to the preponderence of lefty holes with serious consequences if a RHBH player over anhyzers their shot(s) into the oblivion lying below...

KC is great, thanks for the compliments. The people here before me deserve all the accolades. The future for disc in KC is going great, as we are working on other areas as well. Within the next 5 years, I would expect KC to have closer to 10 courses that are all of good solid quality and challenge.

Disc golf is what you make of it from the people around you. KC is truly a place where the people really do care about disc golf. If you have not been here, get here!

Thanks again for the kind words! Blue Valley this weekend, if you would have been here for that, your jaw would have dropped at what the next level of disc golf is coming out of KC.

Wait and see people, wait and see!!! "I can't throw it that far!, I can't even see the basket that far....."/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Sounds great Jack! The wonderful terrain in KC begs for a course that challenges top players to keep it in the 60s. Hope to cya next summer for the Wide Open (had to pull out this year due to injury). DD

Now I'm gonna have to make a trip back up there and check out those new courses too Jack!!! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif I'm really in trouble since I lost my glasses up there on Rosedale Upper! Sounds like your players packs for the Masters division guys ought to include a set of binoculars! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

We can hit them on the way home from Worlds next year.

I, too, have played and had success on those courses. I would love to play them regularly.
Water Works first and Swope second. Swope's layout is genius how it keeps coming back to HQ.

Hit the new courses by then as well. Cliff Drive is visible from WW, and then Blue Valley (aka Water Works on STEROIDS!) is not visible, but you can see the Channel 9 Tower from Blue Valley, and they are making a bike trail from Blue Valley to Swope. We will all interconnect on the MO side!

Iowa will be fun though as well!!

Don't forget about beautiful WyCo....

Several new pin placements (PPs) have gone in at WyCo since Am Worlds...and I believe that concrete teepads are in the 'very near' future. Holes with new PPs are #'s 1, 4, 12, 14, & 18.
The course was modified/'shortened up a bit' for Am Worlds to assist with flow...and the established alternate PPs for #'s 2, 3, 5, 14, & 18 were not used.
I personally like natural tees overall...keeps my joints happier...and they're so easily moved! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Not sure where we are on the concrete, but I know that they are in planning stages.

Are you gonna make it to what will be one of the toughest courses ever this weekend? This is TOUGH.

Also the Cubs won their first road game in a playoff series in '45, the first headlines in the paper read:
"They're really flippin' over disc golf"
Cubs, Twins, Giants win (in smaller print!)

If you have access to get the KC Star, get one today, we have great coverage of our sport, with only a few errors on issues......(I have not ran the Wide Open for years.....)

Grab a paper today!

The DG article was in yesterday's Wed Oct 1st KC Star in the 'FYI' section with a reference at the very top of the front page! Shows an "Innova" disc in a semi-spinning mode...DGers will immediately recognize it!

Jack, I'm unable to make the tournament Saturday...but I did play it, Blue Valley, last year with Gavin S. as my random partner. Am really looking forward to showing off this course to my out of town DGers when they make a KC stop. In fact, I'm showing off WyCo tomorrow afternoon to a KC-native that moved to the Denver area a few years ago. I'm sad to report he will be wearing a Denver Donkees shirt to the course. Hope I don't grip-lock an errant drive his way...blue and orange make for a nauseating combination!! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

I'd just rip the shirt off of him. Keith I got the notification on Saturday as well, so yeah it hit the INTERNET paper on Saturday, then it went to hard copy with photos on Wednesday. Same article, though there are extras in the paper about the game that are not in the online version.

And in case I tourque anyone off in cyberland here, I have not ran the Wide Open for years, as matter of fact, I have only ran the Am Wide Open this year, and the Worlds, though I have ran many other events in KC over the last few years.

Getting bigger and bolder coverage than the Cubs winning the first road game since '45 covers most of the excitement that I have!

Thanks,

Jack

For some fine views of KC Disc Golf. This guy is working on the Swope course right now. It is hard to do as the course has been redesigned 3 times since I moved back in '98.....Work work WORK, man when will it be copmlete?

Can someone rank the KC courses? I leave tomorrow for a trip there. I'll be in KC from Wed 10/18- Fri 10/20 and hope to squeeze in 4 rounds. Which 4 should I choose?

Waterworks is on the agenda for Wed. Then where?
Swope, Blue Valley, Rosedale, WyCo? I want to make sure I hit the best 3 left. What would you suggest?

Sorry for the short notice. I just discovered thtat I don't have as much info as I thought I did.

For a simple tour, play WW, Cliff Drive (no teepads yet), Rosedale up-top and DownUnder, and then Swope. The order is not the best for saving time driving-wise...

I had the opportunity to play 5 courses. Here's my initial ranking before I do my evaluations:

Waterworks. An awesome course. Probably in the top 20 of the 170+ that I've played.
WyCo
Swope
Rosedale
Prairie Center in Olathe.

Before long I'll have more complete reviews at my google group, DG Course Reviews, DG-Course-Reviews@googlegroups.com
