Which courses are the oldest? Everyone knows that Oak Grove in Pasadena, CA was the first ever pole hole course, but which courses came next?
What's the oldest course in your state?
I believe that Fritz in Irving, TX is now considered the oldest course in Texas since Skyline's course in Dallas (Lake Highlands) was removed years ago, but does anyone know when either of those courses was first installed?
Lots of (mis)information here (http://pdga.com/discus/messages/56/3100.html?981064135) and here (http://www.pdga.com/discus/messages/56/1527.html).

Huntington Beach is Number 2. Allegedly.
I think Morley went in around 1977 or 78.
I thought I posted this before. I was told that Tsawassen (sp) course in BC Canada was installed in 1976. They had bigass honking homemade baskets designed to catch lids; golf discs all fell thru, even the Condors.
Also, the baskets were really high (no pun intended BCers /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif); it seemed like the cage was around shoulder-to-eye level and the top nubs I don't think I could even reach! It got replaced with traditional baskets a few years ago, but I wish they kept one of the big ones in the ground. They were sure fun to throw lids at.
I know that the Lyons course in Norman, Oklahoma was in before or around 1978.
Did I happen to mention the 25th Annual Norman Pro/Am on Memorial day weekend!!???

At last count there were 27 "second oldest" courses in the US. Everybody with an old course says it's the second oldest.
ed put in madeline bertrand in niles michigan with 18 mach 1 baskets in 1985. not the oldest in the world by any means but i believe the oldest full time dedicated pole hole course in michigan.

You guys should be looking for number three on. La Mirada is number 2. That was a quote from Ed Headrick posted earlier on this thread. If Oak Grove is accepted as number one, then the criteria has to be first 10 "pole hole" courses. There were many non pole hole courses before Oak Grove. Some go back to the fifties.

I wasn't around in the sport then but Ed's salesmanship also may have led several people to thinking they had the 2nd, 3rd or 4th course. "You're my first baby!" was probably a little too unbelievable as a ploy. Those rankings may have been true when he said them if the courses would have been installed that day.

Here's a list I collated from earlier discussions, but as with all info on this board I won't vouch for the veracity:
The first 7 pole hole courses rom Ed Headrick:
1. Oak Grove, Pasadena CA
2. La Mirada, CA
3. Southgate
4. Huntington Beach, CA
5. Frontier Park
6. Philadelphia, PA
7. Morley
(Beth Klingensmith has always been told that the nine hole Pueblo Colorado course was #3.)
If anyone can add the year they were installed that would be great
I think our (Huntsville) Brahn Spring course
was installed 76-77. From what Lavone said,Ed's
son Ken did the design/install.

Dave Dunipace says there were frisbee golf courses before pole holes were inented, even dating back to the 1950's. Even Oak Grove itself was a course for a year or two before he instaled chains on it.
Does anybody know of a pre-pole-hole course that still exists in its original pre-pole-hole state as it was before 1976? I do.
I know it has been mentioned before, but before I search, What years for Skyline? and Fritz? in Texas? They were early. Also, I used to hear about "tone poles". They rang like a bell when struck. Any of these left out there? "meister"

Hey Hauf, I don't know about Fritz, but the 1st disc golf course with baskets in Texas was Skyline, installed in 1978 from what I understand. This came from John Houck several years ago. I was originally 9 holes. I know they played Disc golf in Rivershaun before that. No baskets. Dan Roark says he has a map that someone gave him of the course.

The course I know of that's been sitting there for decades without chains as one of the few remaining pre-pole-hole courses is in Glbert Lakes State Park in Laurens, NY. It still has painted telephone poles (10 feet tall) as targets. I'll try to find a date for it, probably 1970's or 60's. Boy is this course primitive, best played with frisbees.
The PDGA course directory says established 2002, that's just a beurocratic error. I will look into it.

The legend here in southeast Virginia is that the Mach One course at Bayville in Virginia Beach was installed in 1977. Sedgley, in PA, was also installed that year per the directory. These courses were probably installed within weeks of each other so either one could be the oldest east coast course.
Tube tone baskets are still in use at the Yadkinville course in NC. Man do those things ring when you hit em'!! I believe that course was installed in the early 90's?
Ceadrock in Burlington, NC had Cedar Post that were painted for the longest time. I believe that course was built in the early 80's by Bob Watson and Carlton Howard. Im sure this was one of the first few courses installed in NC?
Im thinking maybe Latta Park in Charlotte was the first NC course, but Horizon park in Winston-Salem has to be pretty close? Im sure Stan "da man" could answer better than me.

We used tone poles for WyCO initially, they are owned by a club member who has a set of 9, they do ring like a bell, and leave no room for error. Not sure if Max made them himself, or these were purchased, but they are pretty darn cool, and worked great while we were waiting for baskets.
I remember playing disc golf at age 8 in Ottumwa IA at Wildwood, not sure if it was a true course out there then, or they were doing a demo, but that was my first taste of disc golf many many years ago. My grandma's house was on the north side of the course there, and I remember playing from the time that I was about 10 on regularly, but it had the martain baskets, or something from Spacely Sprockets I always thought.
Oldest private Home Course basket course(?)-- 1985. Catching Targets Home Course -- Snohomish, WA 9 baskets, 18 hole, about 4800 ft in length with about 80 ft in elevation changes on 5 acres.
Uses a constantly changing mix of directional and chain hole baskets. Actually, there are typically over 20 usable targets/prototypes "archived" around the yard...
Use by invite only -- I'm usually open to visitors. My course record - 43 (2001) Visitor record -- Kurt Bayne - 50?
Speed round -- 11 minutes at 51. (62 total).
Course is still in use, pretty much as it was originally laid out.
Oldest Par 4 courses?
World Course at Woodland Park, Seattle, WA. Tree object course. Used in an Olympic Windjammers Spring DG event in 2003 (?). Soon became a par 3 course with the introduction of the Aero... Course record -- 44. Speed record 66 (48 throws in 12 minutes). ( Generally follows the "Old Course" object tree layout, only longer. About 5800 ft long?
Oldest true par 4 course -- Y course at Woodland Park, Seattle. Had to complete hole by flying thru the double trunks of various Y trees (either direction). Course record 47. About 5200 ft long(?). Only 3 players (including Lowell Shields) ever broke par. Ralph Williamson (DG legend SGM) threw a credible 81 when he was about 65.
Woodland Park's Old Course (object course) was in use in the late 70s. My brother showed it to me in 1978. Not sure when it came into being... Ask Lowell...
The Woodland Park courses are currently off limits for organized play, with some fairways clogged or obstructed by new growth and dog run areas.
Also, one of the first basket DG courses was Lakeport, CA, where Ed's shop was in the early 80s. 9 holes of perhaps 1800 ft?

The Fritz Park course in Irving, Texas was installed in the spring of 1984 (I checked the old press release that Mike Moore sent the newspapers). I know that we were playing the Rivershaun park obstacle course in 1978-79 time frame, so I don't think Skyline was in the ground until at least 1980.

Pole Holes made it to Nebraska from the coasts in 1989. Nine Mach IIIs went in and are still on the course that now has 27, in Lincoln. They will be used in June at the Star City Shoot-out (http://nebdisc.7host.com/tournamentarchive2003/scso03/index.html). /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
First portable Pole Hole, with a plywood base, came to Nebraska in the late 1970s. It will be on display at the shoot-out.
Fred, Mitch Mac and his family have their own course. Or at least used to. mid 80s I think. GLENN HALE? on the message board? Wuuzzuup? FREEKS! Glenn, who was James carroll, the guy that designed the Fritz logo? "meister"
Mike A, if Sedgely and Bayville were in 1977, then a course in Maine was built in 1975. It's in North Monmouth called Beaver Brook. Designed by Headrick and I know this because the man ("Steady Ed") told me so himself. The directory lists it as installed in 1975. This would make it one of the earliest courses on the east coast. Just when baskets were first designed.
Also, Morgan, Green Lakes State Park in New York had a course like that with the yellow poles until we converted it to baskets in 1998. The poles had been there since 1977 and there is still an old sign that says "Frisbee Golf Course". No golf discs back then but you could scoot it down low and hit the bottom to hole out.

May 05 2003, 06:46 PM
Gary, you're correct. Beaver Brook was installed in 1975. Their web site (http://www.beaver-brook.com/frisgolf.html) says 1975 and claims to be the 3rd oldest course. Research done by one of the locals found that it's either the 8th, 9th, or 10th course installed by Ed (verified by Ed as well). I think that info was published on one of the previous threads on this subject.
It hosts a Vintage (100 mold discs) tournament every year, which is probably the best way to play the course these days, given the current disc technology. Nothing more than a putter is really necessary for it, except for maybe one or two holes.

In my neck of the woods, when I cut my teeth on disc golf, the Peru KOA was installed before the summer of 1978, and there were many other courses in the Midwest in the Spring of 1979, when I was trying to qualify for the $50K open. I played at Falling Bark Park, sorry Brahan Springs Park in Huntsville, and I qualified at the Otter Creek Park course outside of Louisville (came in second to a guy that had a smoooooth throw and could putt great, name was David Greenwill or something like that. Wonder what ever happened to him?)...
Gilson Park was in at Evanston, IL. There also was a course at the KOA in Lafayette IN in 1978, but it was pulled and ended up at the S&? Campground east of Indianapolis.
If I remember, I'll try and dig up an old DGA newsletter or brochure that Ed used to sell the Pole Holes (he did highlight the Otter Creek course and a course in Va Beach in one of them. You ought to see Ken Headrick putting in bell bottoms at a pole hole with 12 chains. I wonder what one of these brochures would go for on ebay? Almost out of plastic)...

So, Green Lakes in Syracuse, NY was 1977 (Gary says), Leonard Park in Mount Kisco, NY was also 1977 (Daver Coates says), and I'd bet Gilbert Lake in Laurens, NY was right around the same time, kind of makes you wonder if one person in the NY State parks department in 1977 went around making courses in state parks all over NY. Who was it?
What year was that really old-looking course in that state park in Buffalo installed? Was it...1977??????
Winton Woods Cincy sometime in 1978, Miami Whitewater ~1979, Woodland Mound ~1980
Wonder if there are sales records somewhere...?

DeanO, Ed re-designed Brahan Springs while I was out of town. I had the original design going around the lake out near the old A&W Root Beer place. He came to town while I was in Canada and when they showed him my design, he loved the last few holes, through the woods so much, that he put the whole thing in there.
His son Kenny, designed the original 9 holes on the Arsenal, while I was gone again. I added 9 more for the 83 Worlds. Lavone tweaked it out to it's current configuration.
I designed the original North course at UAH and then the extra 18 was for the Worlds in 83.
Lavone later expanded on those for the design as it is today. I understand he has added another thousand feet or so to that layout.
John Garmon says: May 17 1984 for Fritz Park. Thanks John.
Steve, thanks for the info from John about Fritz.
A webpage for Bartholomew Park in Austin,TX...

Correction: The first Pole Hole course in Nebraska was in 1989, in Lincoln, as was said before.
The first disc entrapment devices were installed in 1978 or 1979 (still working on the details), in Omaha at Elmwood Park.
The course was installed at the expense of J C Pennys, and taken out because the maintenece of repairing the fiberglass was time consuming. The deflection system would crack and break over the winter months.

Skyline Park, Dallas. Installed August, 1982
Bart is the oldest EXISTING course in Texas. The first was the Skyline course (the name was later changed to Lake Highlands), which was eventually moved to BB Owens.
The first 9 holes at Skyline were donated by Wham-O, and the course hosted the World Junior Championships (I think) in around 1981.

OK,
I dug out from the archives of the under construction Bill Burns Flying Disc Shrine:
Disc Golf Association NEWS-LETTER, January, 1978:
First, it announced the wedding of Ed and Luann Headrick. It later reported the results of the (1977) Mobile Christmas Classic. Tom Monroe reported getting a hole-in-one, and, as was the practice then, he won a basket. In this case, Tom got to keep the Around Nine demo basket he had in his possession.
Cynthia Allen won the Women Division, 27 strokes ahead of Patti Kunkle. Tom won, 5 strokes ahead of Captain Snap, tying the course record of 49, and breaking Steve Slasor's tournament record of 204 with a 202.
Cynthia received $75 for her win, with 3 places cashing, and Tom received $125, with 10 places cashing.
Ed was running a special - any member could buy a Disc Pole Hole TM for $120, including freight. The normal cost was $295 FOB Costa Mesa (I suspect that was the list price).
I have an undated directory of Disc Golf TM Courses. I suspect that it was from approximately the same time period, since it was printed on colored paper, as was the Jan 1978 News-Letter.
Ed noted "Pay for Play" courses with an *:
ALABAMA:
Huntsville: Brahan Spring Park
*Mobile - KOA
ARIZONA:
Tempe - Sandy Beach Park
CALI:
Berkeley - Tilden Park (it notes that "You can't find this course unless you call Victor Malafronte or John Mortimer at (415)...
Huntington Beach - Central Park
La Canada - Oak Grove Park (NOT PASADENA!!!)
La Mirada - LM Regional Park
San Diego - Balboa Park
Tustin - Frontier Park (9 holes)
ILLINOIS:
*Rockford - Thunder Rock
Wilmette - 1200 Wilmette Ave. (Gilson Park?)
INDIANA:
*Peru - KOA
IOWA:
Cedar Rapids - Tourist Park (Frisbee Park)
MAINE:
*North Monmouth - Beaver Brook Resort
MASS:
*Hancock - Jimminy Peak Ski Hill
*Lenox - Eastover Resort
*South Egremont - Jug End in the Berkshires
*South Lee - Oak N' Spruce Resort
MINN:
*Mpls - Bramar Park
*Mpls - Minnihaha Park
NEVADA:
LV - Lyons Park (9 holes)
LV - Sunset Park (9 holes)
NEW HAMPSHIRE:
*Plymouth - Tenny Mtn Ski Resort
NJ:
*Newfoundland - Craigmeur Ski Area
*Vernon - Vernon Valley Ski Area
NY:
*Mount Kisco - Leonard Park
SCarolina:
*Myrtle Beach - Apache Family Campground
VA:
*Martinsville - 570 Mount Olivet Rd.
WISC:
*Waupaca - "The Farm"
29 courses by my count. Interestingly high percentage were "Pay to Play", and most of those seemed to be courses set up at Northeastern ski resort when it was out of season.
Unfortunately, this does not mention which courses were put in when, but this would seem to contradict some posting about some courses being installed in 1977, when they are not mentioned in this list.
If you'll pardon me, I think I'll read the July 1978 News-Letter, which introduces a new disc - A "Night Flyer". You can get a set of 4 (they were only numbered 1-4) for $20. Single disc orders were $6. I don't know what that would be in 2003 dollars, probably about $20?
Hope you enjoyed it. I'm sure Tom could add even more info...

Bill, that is great information! I printed it out.
As for the courses I said were installed in 1977 but aren't on that list, the reason they probably aren't on the list is they didn't have Ed's pole holes at the time, they had wood poles. Green Lakes in Syracuse NY had wood poles (short telephone poles) from 1977 to 1998 when they finally installed chains, and Gilbert Lakes State Park in Laurens NY STILL has the original wood poles, only they are white instead of yellow. Somebody must think the course is special, because they paint the poles every year and groom it. The only people who I have seen playing it, use regular frisbees. Real disc golfers never use it. And one of the courses I mentioned actually does show up on the list, Mt Kisco, the oldest chained course in NY! 1977!

Yes, yes! Gilson Park is in Wilmette, Illinois and what a course! It was an object course, at least partly I remember, and one object was one of those metal 3D upsidedown triangles with an open top and holes for basketballs.
Either that or we had no idea what we should have been throwing at . . . . :-)
I also believe that West Park in Joliet went in around '78 or '80. Check the Gary Lewis article from DGWN issue by Barrett White from earlier this year.
Being that there seems some legitimate debate about who was 2nd! If it came down to Huntington Beach and a course on the east coast being installed in the same year, I'd say the CA course probably came first (or earlier in the year) since the weather is good there all year round! Meaning they were probably playing in the winter, whereas at Kisco you can't play in the winter!

Horizons Park is located in northern Forsyth County in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. The park opened in 1981 and is home to the oldest permanent disc golf course in the state. The course was designed by Tom Monroe, and features DGA Mach II baskets. Built before the advent of bevel-edged discs, the course is extremely short by modern standards at a mere 3673 feet (I can remember playing the course with a Wham-O lid in 1982, and being overwhelmed by the distance!). Horizons offers stunning views of nearby Pilot and Sauratown Mountain. The course is home to the Horizons Park Classic, a PDGA event which routinely draws top pros such as Stan McDaniel and Larry Leonard. The Classic is in its 16th year, making it one of the oldest regular tournaments in the state.

At the summer camp that I went to as a kid in Trinity TX, they had baskets (this would be early 80's) but of course I didn't know what they were. When I went to a reunion, the owner said they pulled them because they had been there since the late 70's and nobody knew what they were...

Here's info I've collected on the oldest courses. I can't verify the truth of any claims, though.
<table border="1"><tr><td>Course</td><td>ST</td><td>City</td><td>Year</td><td>Notes
</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>Oak Grove</td><td>CA</td><td>Pasadena</td><td>1975</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>La Mirada</td><td>CA</td><td>La Mirada</td><td>?</td><td>claimed by Dave Dunipace
</td></tr><tr><td>Beaver Brook </td><td>ME</td><td>North Monmouth</td><td>1975</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Southgate</td><td>*</td><td>?</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Brahan Spring</td><td>AL</td><td>Huntsville</td><td>1976</td><td>Designed by Tom Monroe, and redesigned by Ed Headrick
</td></tr><tr><td>Huntington Beach Central Park</td><td>CA</td><td>Huntington Beach</td><td>1977</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Bayville</td><td>VA</td><td>Virginia Beach</td><td>1977</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Mt. Kisco</td><td>NY</td><td>*</td><td>July or Aug 1977</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Frontier Park</td><td>KS</td><td>Hayes</td><td>?</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Sedgely</td><td>PA </td><td>Philadelphia</td><td>1978</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td>Morley</td><td>CA</td><td>San Diego</td><td>*</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> </tr></td></table>
A lot of these dates are wrong. Frontier park is in Tustin, Ca. not Kansas. It was among the first. It was a small nine hole next to Bob Gardner's house. Bob Gardner was an executive with Wham-0 at the time. South Gate, Ca was not among the first. It was around 1979.

West Park in Joliet, IL was also put in by Ed. I think it was late 70's.

It probably was the Frontier Park in Tustin CA, not in KS. See further up thread in Exczar's list.

According to sign on 1st tee, West Park (Joliet, IL) was established in 1979...
I'm not sure, but I heard that it was expanded to it's current 24 hole layout at a later date, due to excessive traffic...
If you're ever in the area (you can see it on the south side of I-80) It's a must play.... #2 is the most thrilling tee shot in Illinois disc golf (that I know of in my meager 2 years of playing)
I'd love to get more info on it's history...

I played in the first tournament at West Park in 1979. I took fourth place. First, second and third got midnight flyers, fourth got jack. There was also a course in Willmette right on Lake Michigan. I played there in 1978 or 77. The seventies are kind of fuzzy!
According to the Course directory:
Santa Cruz River Park
Tucson, Arizona 85726
Course Established: 1978
I know it's not in it's original configuration.
The original tee pads were hexagons (many still exist), and used to have a curb at the front end like a shotput pad. The club broke the curbs off years ago after many twisted ankles.

I just received a publication from DGA from 1978. It has several course's / cities listed that have "Pole Hole" course's. The publication looks like it was a Sale Brochure for having new course's built.
Las Vegas was listed. That would have been for the two 9 hole courses, Sunset & Fantasy.

Here's what's in the DGA brochure from 1978.
Oak Grove is the first course with pole holes. Then they mention two other course's being installed in LA County. Maybe those are La Mirada and Huntington Beach?
There's a paragraph on land requirements, there's a course map for Otter Creak Park, Fort Knox KY.
They later note "This phenomenon has repeated itself in Whimette, a suburb of Chicago, Las Vegas NV, Tempe AZ, and San Deigo CA.
Some cool pictures of Ken Headrick putting with a Midnight Flyer into a Mach I at Oak Grove. Also, includes rules for "Around Nine".

Other courses that I know of from that era (78-79) are Rockledge FL DGC, Mobile AL (at the KOA campground), Virginia Beach VA.
I'll dig out my old Frisbee World magazines and see what other courses were holding tournaments.

Missouri:
Oldest: White Birch Park in Hazelwood in 1979.
After that; Oak Grove in Springfield, Swope Park in KC, and Albert-Oakland Park (front course) in Columbia, all around 1980-1981. My gut feeling is that Springfield is the oldest of those 3, but I'm not really sure.
