I was going through some old boxes of discs and came across a disc called "The Wheel". Turns out to be one heck of a roller disc. On the underside it says that the disc is PDGA approved but when I looked it up this morning I can't find it on the approved disc list. Anyone know when the disc became unapproved by the PDGA?

Right AFTER it was approved.

That doesn't make sense. Do you know why it was taken off the list? It is an awesome disc for throwing rollers.

Search the archives on this message board and you may find the answer - it has been at least 3 years - maybe closer to 5 - if i still worked with people associated with the PDGA - I would know exactly - but I haven't for over 3 years - and it happened before I left the employer.

Sorry I can't help more than that.

Interesting how it lists me as "membership expired" under my name even though I've been a member for almost 20 consecutive years....

The Wheel was invented in 2008 or 2007, back when I was running tournaments with my brother. Quest created a lot of innovative discs that caused the PDGA to change the tech standards. As for the Wheel, the PDGA decided that a disc had to have a top and a bottom, a flight plate and an underside.

The Wheel is only good as a roller if you have a backstop near the basket. Because it is symmetrical, it does not have a curl at the end of its roll, so it is really hard to stop it at the target. Because it is so fat and slow. it really does not work as a driver-roller unless maybe you have a downhill fairway with golf course length grass.

Of all of their gimmicks, the center weighted putter was the best. I think the PDGA outlawed that by having a thickness standard for the flight plate. Not sure about that and not looking it up.

The why of why it became unapproved was because of pressure from other manufacturers. None of Quests innovations were game changing, but the big manufacturers did not like what Quest was doing. One of the manufacturers told me that if Quest were not stopped he was going to develop the square putter: no more roll-aways on sidehill greens. I'd carry a well-made square putter if they were allowed!

I'm not sure the Wheel was ever approved, just the Turbo Putter for a about a year and a half. But Quest must have put PDGA Approved on the Wheel in expectation it would be approved.
