Greetings damas y caballeros of Southern California and beyond. It's Ice Bowl time! The Inland Empire Disc Golf Club will be hosting the 5th Annual Redlands Ice Bowl at Ford Park in Redlands on Saturday, January 7, 2011. Check in/registration begins at 8:30am and the Player's Meeting will be at 9am sharp.

This event will be the first in the seven (seven!) part "Golden Sombrero Winter Series 2012," the other Ice Bowl events being held at San Marcos (1/14/12), Los Angeles/Chavez Ridge (1/21/12), Beaumont (1/22/12), San Diego/Sycuan Resort (2/4/12), an authentically Icy Location TBA (2/25/12) and San Diego/Mission Bay (2/26/12). Come and get some early season golfing in and support some excellent local charities.

As with the previous Ice Bowls in Redlands all proceeds will go to Redlands Family Service Association and the very important and needed work they perform in our community. Last year - due to the great generosity of those who participated - we raised $803. Can we do it again? How many mulligans are you going to buy for a chance to get that elusive ace?

The entry fee is $20 ($10 for kids 15 and under) and here's what you'll get:
- a nice walk in a lovely park
- 27 holes of play: two rounds of 9 holes on the Ford Park Pitch n' Putt Deluxe layout and one round of 9 holes in "Metal or Nada" format (one shot at the basket per hole)
- a fine premium disc with the Golden Sombrero Winter Series 2012 stamp (a choice from Glow Champ Big Bead Aviars or Metal Flake Champ Gators - thanks Innova!)
- 3 mulligans (more, many more, for sale - "Buy a tourney win!")
- the first chance to get together with disc golf friends in the New Year and talk trash: "Chargers 2011: the year we finally got rid of Norv Turner and AJ Smith."
- a chance at the coveted Redlands Ice Bowl trophy
- some other sweet prizes

Many thanks to the City of Redlands, Redlands Morning Kiwanis and Innova Champion Disc Golf.

We know what it takes to win in Redlands now: a perfect -18 and probably an ace thrown in for the win. No drivers needed; get your midrange game on!

Questions? PM me or email at mauryholmes@yahoo.com

Hope to see you there,

Bill

That's the probable weather for Saturday's Redlands Ice Bowl, but we'll see. It was 90 degrees here today...

Wear a Hawaiian shirt and get an extra mulligan/raffle ticket for doing so. I want to post a picture for the Ice Bowl HQ folks that shows those poor popsicles in other parts of the country what they're missing. The brighter and more floral the better.

A hearty thank you to the 51 good folks who made yesterday's 5th Annual Redlands Ice Bowl at Ford Park a smashing success and a darn good time. Forget the "Ice" part of it; the high temperature hit 86 degrees and the only clouds were contrails from the jet planes way up high. There were, however, reports of isolated incidents of sunburn and unseasonal thirst.

As usual there was tight competition amidst the smiles on a layout in which 18-under is rarely good enough for the win. This year two people again tied the record of -19 with seventeen birdies and an ace. Prevailing in a CTP shootout before a boisterous gallery, top local Justin Carter bested Hall of Famer Mark Horn and for the first time kept the coveted trophy at home in the Inland Empire. Both played superb golf, displaying precise mid-range skills and nailing hole #4 to play for the top spot.

Also playing "clean" rounds at -18 with birdies on all holes were Tom Clickner, Chris Horn, "Big D" Daniel Lichtman, Mario Martinez, the always generous Carl Renda, AJ Risley and Mark Verrochi. In the "Metal o Nada" round Mark Verrochi stayed hot and set a new record of 4 points (an ace and a hit), just besting Chris Horn's ace for 3 points, while Eric Audet, Justin Carter, Tom Clickner, Cori Fullmer, AJ Junker, Jason Hine, Big D, AJ Risley and Nathan Welsh all tallied metal hits for a point as well.

Happily all the good times and free-spending with mulligans resulted in a new record for donations and I will be presenting Redlands Family Service Association with $927 and 7 cans of food for their important work. Special thanks go to the City of Redlands, the Redlands Morning Kiwanis Club and Innova Champion Disc Golf for their constant support.

Now it's on to other legs of the Golden Sombrero Series. C'mon out and join us.

Gratefully,

Bill
