Ok, just had to get this out there. I talked to the lady at Lake Fort Smith State Park (Mountainburg) and got the go ahead to put together a temp course in their day-use area, and hold an Ice Bowl out there to show the parks department what disc golf can do for them. Then we are going to move on to talks of putting in a permanent course, maybe down along their camping area, so disc golf is HIGHLY visible in their park. Please watch this page for more information as myself and the WAFDA crew work on finalizing it and making it into a stellar event!! Please come out and support the cause of disc golf in state parks, as well as the chosen charity. :)

Now, first step will be a date....which is the second part of this thread....
Ice Bowl dates?? I thought it would be nice to have them all in one spot.
Someone help me on when they are?

Jan. 14 - Fayetteville

Jan. 21 - Tulsa

Feb. 25 - Horseshoe Canyon

Fort Smith is undetermined - Feb. 4 is out, Jan. 28 is too many in a row

I'm leaning towards Feb. 11th - perhaps we should do the Fort Smith Ice Bowl at Lake Fort Smith temp course instead of Tilles?

That sounds good to me Evan. The Parks service is giving us the go ahead for Feb 4th or 11th either one. I am thinking the 4th, so it is not on the weekends closest to Valentine's, and we don't lose anyone to "Honey-Do" dinners or trips...

The only thing the park is asking is that we use a charity that is close to them to support, and I told them who we usually use, and they asked if we could split it between the Clearinghouse and the Mountainburg Schools Backpack Program (gives food to kids for their breaks, so they have food at home). The lady at the park is looking into getting all the information for me on the program, so we can be sure it is one we can support.

I would be glad to run this one if you don't mind Evan! :)

Anyone that has input, or questions feel free to give me a holler. If you are familiar with the park, and want to help me look over possible layouts, give me a call (479-670-4508) and I can let you know where the general placement is going to be and we can see what we come up with. I want to make as good of use as possible out there, so the more eyes and minds the better.

I think it would be fine to support the Mountainburg program

The money we've raised for the Community Services Clearinghouse is used for the same basic thing (Back Pack Program) which goes throughout the River Valley Area

all good, I like the idea of the charity being utilized for children in need

Willie, I sure don't mind you running it and would be glad to answer any questions and help out - Thanks for stepping up!

Got the maintenance guy on board to do some brush hogging for me, so we can spread out some, and incorporate the Visitor Center more in the tournament. (think they liked the idea of the exposure and of having a chance to sell some snacks and coffee to the golfers). So I now have a nice 18 hole layout, including one of the SWEETEST shots I up have ever seen! Gonna be a great tournament!
Everyone mark their calendars for Feb. 4th, come down to Lake Fort Smith Park, show the state parks how valuable a course would be to them and enjoy WAFDA's newest Ice Bowl location!! You know how we do tourneys.....you simply CAN'T go wrong!

Everything sounds great Willie, all I ask for is a safe course. Where kids playing, campers, parking lots, picnic areas, and other things are all out of the way. Nobody wants to hit a car or a person, or go there to play and have to skip a hole because someone is having lunch in the middle of your fairway. So please remember, safety first:). I would love to help you with the layout or clearing. Anything you need, let me know!;)

Well, they are talking like we are going to have the whole bottom to ourselves, but it is possible it could be a nice day and some folks could come in on us, same as if we were at Tilles....but there are only 5 or 6 holes that COULD be effected, and they would be playable you would just have to play conservative. I really don't think there will be any problems though, bc we were there Saturday (beautiful day) and I threw all 18 without any concerns.
I'll be back from Vegas Thursday, and will be going out to the park on next Wednesday if anyone wants to check it out.

Alright, this thing is coming along. Feb 4th will be the date. I'm meeting with the park maintenance man on Wednesday to discuss the brush hogging we need done and I am going to spend some time out there checking the layout one more time. If anyone wants to join me, just give me a call or a message on here. I figure I will go out whenever they open, which is 9am and stay around there for quite a while.
The flyer for this event will be coming soon, but you can figure on it being just like it always is.... CHEAP and LOTS OF FUN!! So put it on your calendar, Feb4th Lake Fort Smith Ice Bowl!

Thanks to the 5 guys who came out with me today and gave their input! Wish I hadn't thrown my back out and could have enjoyed THROWING with you, but liked the walk
through anyway! Got some good ideas and some new hole placements. That's why I wanted the fresh, new eyes. Really like the layout and am SUPER excited about this event!! We'll get baskets out there some Saturday soon and REALLY check it out! :)

Are there rv spots? If so, would it be wise to reserve in advance? Is it required? Or first come?

Thanks
Jake

They do have RV spots, and from what I can tell they are really slow this time of year, so you should be able to get in the day of, however they do have a reservation option too.

That should get you to the site for Lake Fort Smith spots.
Just FYI I am going to be setting my camper up in one of the spots at the top closest to the visitor center, bc it will be right by one of the holes, and I have a dg friend who is going to stay in it.....you may want to get up there too, or that may tell you to go to the other end! :)
I can't remember the site number, but will find out tomorrow when I am there.

There has also been some talk about maybe renting one of the lodges....if anyone is interested in doing that, post up here and we'll see if we can make it worth while. It cost $320 to rent it, plus $7.50 a person for linens (so bring a blanket or sleeping bag to avoid that!). Campsites are $18 a night at cheapest, so if we had 16 folks to go in on the lodge ( it will sleep 32) it would just be $20 a person. Just a thought.....

Ok, I am going to be renting space #3 for my camper, and the other two up there are #1 and 2. My spot was $22 for one night. It has water and electric to it.
