More info to come. I thought a south side OO would be good for this year. The courses are subject to change, as in a big flood or something before the tournament. Otherwise this should prove a good challenge for everyone.

We are doing an Inncolor with the Skeet design above. I honestly think this is one of his best pieces of work..

Other things brewing, big fall fun ending on Halloween night!!

Oklahoma's premiere event is going to be awesome in 2010!!

I am selling hole sponsorships on Haikey's tee-signs for the OO. I figured "since the tee-signs need to be re-done, why not add some cash to the event?"

Sponsorships cost $20. $5 goes to the Haikey course improvement fund, the other $15 goes directly to the OO.

http://members.cox.net/bmoyers/Haikey_01.jpg

here is an example of what the tee signs will look like. I will leave these intact until April 2011... your logo / sponsorship will stand for six months.

Great idea and I think the design is solid. Hopefully people will step forward and do a sponsorship..

I talked to Jerry Stacey earlier and we will be working on tee signs for Hunter as well.

The OO this year should be bigger and better than last year. I left the prices the same as we all understand the economy is tough. This is my second and last year to run this event as historically the TD's have stepped up for a two year term.

You may have noticed I decided to end sign ups Friday night before the event at 7:00. I REALLY want to stick to this. That is not to say that out of towners coming in will not receive some flexibility. The tournament is just under two months away so I think most players should be able to sign up by the deadline. I want to spend Saturday morning creating the best experience possible and not having to deal with late sign-ups is the key.

Most major events now have a deadline so this is not at all out of the ordinary. I will circulate sign-up sheets to all the local TD's and movers and shakers so besides the online sign-up option you will have plenty of opportunities to get in.

More information to come as it is confirmed..

I wanted to remind everyone that entry into the A Tier, Advanced and Pro, requires a current PDGA membership.

The good news is the PDGA announced that any memberships from October 1st through the end of the year will be good for 2010 and 2011.

You can sign up on line or let me know if you have questions..

I am going to be spending the next two weekends out at Haikey re-vamping the course for the tournament. I need all the help I can get. Help consists of, but is not limited to: able bodies, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pickup trucks. If you can miss the awesome events being held the next two weekends and can provide any or all of the aforementioned items, please leave me a message here on the board or send me a text with your name to my cell number , 918-852-6543. I will coordinate times with you by the end of the week.
I am changing holes 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 18 for this tournament. That's an awful lot of hole-digging, equipment-moving, dirt-tamping, and grunt-labor. Thanks in advance for your help.

You guys have dug so many holes at Haikey, why don't you just switch it to a collar system? Unlock, move, lock.

Slim , if you have that many to move, you need to use the tire pop out method.

the plan is actually to convert to sleeves, but retrofitting poles and ordering the parts wont allow me enough time to do that properly before the OO. I have met with the head of tulsa county parks as well as the maintenance manager for the park and they are both on board with sleeves, as long as i employ a similar system of pvc pipe in the vacant sleeves like you have in owasso.

2 is just moving around the corner for the tourney, then back to where it is until i buy sleeves.
5 is getting a new tee area and the basket is moving back past 500.
6 will shoot northward through the tree line, instead of northwest next to it.
adding a fourth hole in the woods (new 7) which will be a ~240' tunnel shot.
current 7 (new 8) will be lengthened slightly and moved a little further from the path. (i may end up just moving the tee on this one to save time.)
current 8 (new 9) will be stretched back to the west to the approximate location of 18's current basket. it will be placed to encourage throws through the tree line instead of skip shots off the road.
current 12's basket is being pulled completely to be placed across the street for the new hole 7. hole 13 will now tee from hole 12's current tee. can you say 700+ footer through the trees?
hole 14's tee sign needs to be moved back
hole 18's basket will be moved southward to stay out of current 8 (new 9) fairway.

see, it's not as bad as it looks. i have one volunteer so far... me.

Hey now, its update time from your friendly OO TD..

Pre reg is updated, 10 players so far. I have been receiving a bunch of calls and emails so I can tell you interest is very high in this years event. We even have a player from Cali signed up.

The B tier is now ready for online sign ups so let em rip..

The regular stamped disc came in and wow, they look great. Rainbow stamps and others,
glow Teebirds, Leopards, Wraiths and some cool Star Roc Plus.

The Inncolors will be here any day. I talked to Skeet at the USDGC and he had a copy of the full color stamp there. He said a ton of people commented on it.

Keep in mind, you MUST be current to play in the A Tier. If you sign up now for the PDGA you are current all the way through 2011!!

Also, please remember that sign ups for the A tier end at 7:00 Friday night. I plan on being at Haikey, but stay tuned. Of course I will be flexible for our out of town guest but all locals need to get signed up. I will be more than willing to hold your check until the event.

You will find sign up sheets at Matt's Black Hawk and Riverside events this weekend. I will make sure there are some at Big Daves Friday Night McClure gig. Lots of opportunites to sign up.

I keep hearing some pretty certain rumors of big name golfers showing up. We need you guys to step up and defend our turf!!

And finally keep in mind, the last two winners of the OO went on to win a World Championship, Avery Jenkins and Eric McCabe. Something to think about!!!

The word on the street is that the current World Champ and the current US Champ will be making their ways to OK to take a crack at the title.

Let's go TULSA! The crown doesn't leave the city! (Owasso included)

If you check pre-reg you will see at least one recent World Champ signed up...

Everything is looking great. I read the first long term forecast for next week today and it is looking dry and cool..

The Inncolors arrived and they will be gone quick. Innova only allows Super Tours 75 disc.

It's fall in Oklahoma and that means Oklahoma Open time..

Get ready for this one!!

Everything is on schedule for the OO to be a big success this weekend.

The courses have and are being given their final groom. Logan is working at Dovillio tomorrow if anyone has time to go pitch in.

Jerry and Carrie are working on Hunter so you know that will be good to go.

Slim has Haikey ready and as he mentioned on another thread we are supplying 4 rubber mats for the new holes on the east side of Garnett.

Please keep the online sign ups coming. I will be around all week to collect other entries.

Steve Ward posted sign up sheets on the TDSA site so you can print those and have them ready.

I am taking Friday off and I plan on being at Haikey in the afternoon. Sign ups end Friday evening at 7:00, except for special circumstances. Please get with me, or any TD for that matter, and get your form turned in.

The weather forecast is spectacular. This is the 10th annual Oklahoma Open and it will be a special tournament.

The Inncolors look great and will be available at the tounament.

Call me with any questions and I will keep the updates coming throughout the week..

my guesstimate -- if you are playing by yourself, and only throw one disc per hole (like you would in a sanctioned event) you would finish in about 2 hr 15 min.

i'm guessing with a course full of fivesomes, the round will take 3.5 - 4 hours.

I played the entire course at Haikey Creek by myself this evening, played thru 3 groups and still finished in 1:15. I threw several extra shots! Now I understand that most of you can't throw like I do.... but I think that we can get a round of dub$$ in on Friday!

There is a guy in the intermediate division who should be playing in MA1.. Hes rated 935 and thats the point where you must play Advanced Mens.. does this usually fly???

Oct 26 2010, 01:07 PM
The A tier meets at Haikey Saturday morning where they will play the first round. The second round in the afternoon will be at Hunter.

This is a nice segue into my next comment. We are scheduled to play Dovillio Sunday morning, then the top 4 in each division will play a final 9 at McClure.

Here is where it gets fun. If the A Tier has over 100 players, give or take, I will need to split the field into flights. If that happens the Advanced divisions will travel and play Hunter first.

That all works fine but Sunday morning is where the challenge begins. If I have to split into flights we will have to do tee times Sunday.

This is all noted on the welcome/players info packet you will recieve when you check in.

At this time there are 39 registered in the A Tier. That number is going to begin growing very quickly. I hope we are able to make the flight decision as early as possible. There is a chance I will not know for sure until Saturday morning.

This is another reason why it is so important for you to get registered. As I have said before, I will hold your check or do whatever I can to assist.

PLEASE get signed up so we know what direction we need to take.

I will be at Haikey Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 7:00 taking sign ups.

Contact me if you have any questions or issues - 918-639-3959.

More updates coming soon..

OK sports fans, you will notice a change on the pre reg.

The PDGA has now split the A & B tiers so they are separate on the events tab.

I transfered everything over and it all matched up.

We have 61 players registered so far. The A tier has 45 of those.. A lot of people who have contacted me from out of town are playing the B tier so I think we will have a good turn out there. The Intermediate division is already looking pretty competitive.

Once I know how many players are in the A tier I can make the decision on whether we will need to do flights or not. That will be announced here and obviously at the players meeting.

All is well and looking good. The weather is going to be spot on with a little wind.

Addtional updates coming soon. By the way, Evan McKee is doing the trophies and from what I saw of the proto type I think there will be a definate wow factor involved.

Thats all for now, keep signing up, you're doing great!!!

OKC To Haikey is roughly 120 miles.

When you take the Turner Turnpike (I-44), get off at exit 218 (Creek Turnpike - East). Follow the Creek eastbound until you see the exit for East 96th St. (roughly 10 miles)
take 96th street east until it dead-ends at Garnett Ave.
Take Garnett south two miles. Course HQ is on your right.

There are several hotel options around 71st / 81st and garnett. it'd be worth staying here, there's always construction on I-44.

my two cents :)

What a great turn out for this years OO. We have 98 players in the A tier and 50 in the B.

The wind was rough this morning but everyone persevered with a good attitude. Hunter seemed rough on a lot of scores today but the races are still tight.

We are having a very short players meeting in the morning at 9:00. Once we finish Dovillio we will take a break and begin the final 9 for the top 4 in each A tier division.

Tomorrow promises some excellent golf so come out and check it out. We are really fortunate to have the current world and USDGC champs right here in Tulsa.

It would be great to see a big gallery tomorrow. The weather is looking perfect so come on out for some really solid disc golf!!!

I feel the need for a wrap up TD post. I really want to thank all the volunteers. Charlie Watts posted what a great club we have in Tulsa and big events like the OO certainly highlight the strengths or weaknesses in a club.

Congratulations to all the winners. It is a big deal to win a tournament of this size and prestige. You should be very proud to have endured a variety of courses, wind and other factors to come out on top. We had zero negative player problems and only a few typical TD decisions to make, scoring, do I get relief, those type of questions.

Dave Pennekamp came through like a champ helping me as Co-TD. Matt did a great job running the B tier and I have received several compliments on that leg of the tournament.

We added a bunch of cash, $3K. That is due to help from Wayne Forest, Dave Nicholson, the guys at OKDGF, Daryl Johnson is always there to help out as well. That money is available due to the hard work of the local TD's who run mini throughout the year, the Dough Duffs who run special events that raise a lot of dollars for us. Everyone has to pitch in to make that a reality.

The A tier will show an event value of over $8.5K and the B Tier $1.8K. That means we paid out or provided actual cash or merchandise value back to you the disc golfers of over $10,000.00 in a single weekend.

It was great to see some of the top national touring pros in town. I undestand they all had a great time.

I received only positive feedback and compliments for the staff, TDSA and our courses.

All the course TD's pitched in big time and had the courses looking great. My thanks to them for all the hard work.

To recap I would like to say we have a very special situation here in Tulsa. Our club is the absolute envy of clubs around the country. That is due to the members and volunteers.

I know the TDSA Admins are in the process of developing an aggressive plan for 2011 including more local tournaments and a lot of course improvements/enhancements.

Thanks again to all who participated or supported this years Oklahoma Open.

Wonder why the PGA did not change to US open to every other year so the Europen open could have every other year?

Oh maybe it is because Golf is bigger in the US than in Europe?

Did the USDGC decide that Disc Golf is Bigger in Europe than the US or did they just get tired of running it every year. :(

Way to go guys support those euro's and shaft the US players

I hear you, Martin. Just doesn't make sense to make the change right now. I could understand if the European Open was already as big of an event as the USDGC but it is not even close. One day it will be but right now it's no where near where it needs to be in order to make this change. The powers at be are making a big mistake.

USDGC is one of the reasons I went to the NTs last year to try and qualify. Less motivation to travel to NTs is not good.

Martin_Norris
Nov 02 2010, 05:30 PM
I am sure that under all the talk about trying to boost the attendance at the Euro Open the real reason is business.

It has probably gotten too expensive to hold the USDGC every year both in time and money. Added Cash and lack of sponsorship growth has most likely caught up with the event. :(

We at the TDSA have to bust our collective arses to make the added cash for the Oklahoma Open each year and all we are trying to pull in is $3000.00 or more added cash.

I know it cannot be easy for the USDGC to raise their added cash for the event every year.

Maybe the Southern Nationals is the way to go.

m_conners
Nov 02 2010, 05:49 PM

Good point, Paul. Some of the NT events will decline in numbers due to this change. It will also affect extra cash flow to the PDGA and local clubs. No USDGC means no United States Champion. Let me guess, next thing they will do is hold the World Championships in Australia. As cool as that sounds it's a BAD IDEA. I will never understand this.

Anyway, the OO was awesome sorry for the thread drift.

The simple fact you said it was your girfriend makes it a non point. You celebrate anniversaries if you are married, not dating. The fact you have a kid with her and no ring on her finger also proves you can lie to her. You obviously did it once.
