The Pease Park disc golf course will be closing by the end of this year according to a news broadcast by parks director Sara Hensley on Tuesday, May 25th (Fox, ch.7). The closure is due to The Lower Shoal Creek Channel Stabilization Project, but she did not say whether this will be a temporary or permanent removal of the course nor did she make any suggestion as to the future of disc golf at Austins most central disc golf course, Pease Park.

Sorry for the errors, but the "days" in the original posting/email were wrong:

The Pease meeting is on THURSDAY June 17th (not Tuesday).

The Bart meeting is on WEDNESDAY June 23rd (not Tuesday).

And from Lou Moreno...

Here's another Pease Park disc golf story that ran on KVUE.

Anyone that gives a rat's butt about the disc golf course at Pease Park needs to be at the meeting on Thursday, June 17th. This will probably be the last chance to let the parks department know what this park means to you.

There is now a Facebook page for Save Pease Park Disc Golf!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/SAVE-PEASE-PARK-DISC-GOLF/122199924486174?ref=ts

You can go there and show your support for disc golf at Pease Park by:

Choosing to Like this page
Posting a comment, story, opinion on the page
Spreading the word about this page to others

AND

Under the Information section on the left-hand side, click (read more) and it will bring up the email addresses of the City Council members and their aides, Parks & Rec officials, and Austin Parks Board members. These are all people who, in one way or another, have power over the decisions at Pease Park.

You can send all these folks messages of support for keeping disc golf at Pease Park (even if the course has to come out during the main work project, we want disc golf back once the project is complete).

Below are several links to some of the stories that have come out recently regarding the closure of Pease Park. There are more on the Facebook page and others will be posted as they come out.

Here's a story about some erosion along Shoal Creek that has nothing to do with disc golf since it's further upstream.

The Waterloo Clubs Thursday evening mini at Zilker is CANCELLED this week. Instead, we need everyone to show up at the Pease Park public meeting. This is a huge opportunity for the disc golfers to show that we care about having disc golf at Pease Park and that we insist it remain a feature of the park once all the creek work is done.

Please dont sit back and think that others will show up and save it for you. We need everyone there!!!

Help spread the word, and bring a crowd!

Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

Just a reminder that tomorrow evening, Wednesday June 23rd, there is a very important Public Meeting about the future of Bartholomew Park. Disc golfers NEED to attend this meeting to voice support for keeping a disc golf course in Bartholomew.

The situation is not as dire as at Pease. They have not threatened to pull the course out. HOWEVER, if disc golf is not seen as a need or desire of the park users and residents, then it is likely it wont remain a feature of the park.

We need you to show up at this meeting and say that disc golf is an appropriate activity and a desired activity for the park.

It would be especially helpful for disc golfers who live in one of the neighborhoods near the park to show up and voice your support (or if you have friends who live near there, bring them).

The 3rd (and final) public meeting about the Master Planning of Bartholomew is coming up next week: Thursday August 26, 2010; 6:00 8:00 pm; Dottie Jordan Recreation Center. See the flyer below from the Parks Dept for more info.

It is important that we have a lot of disc golfers there to make sure that we are able to select / vote for the plan that has the best disc golf course possible.

Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

Please join PARD planning and design staff at the upcoming meeting to provide input on the Master Planning of Bartholomew District Park. This meeting will build on the two previous stakeholder input meetings held on June 23 and July 15.

We do ask that participation be focused on recreational opportunities for Bartholomew District Park to insure the meeting stays on track.
