Here's a list of one's that I have used for rollers in the past.

Backhand Roller:
- 170g DX Valkyrie
- 169g SE Valkyrie(Current)
- 170g DX Sting Ray
- 170g Elite-X Xpress
- 172g CE Teebird TL(2nd Run)

Forehand Roller:
- 171g Champion Monster
- 165g H-Speed Demon

That's about it.

Dig out your first driver you ever had. It should be beat to heck and too flippy to be useful for air shots. Start rolling it. When you get that thing to roll straight for a decent shot, start looking for specific roller disc.

I have a 169gm KC Pro Firebird (I think it's an 8 or 9x maybe) that sat in my yard under the leaves for a couple of years. I found it and the top is almost concave, but the plastic still feels grippy enough to throw. It is super flippy at high speed and makes a great roller, with one caveat - because it has such a sharp rim, if I don't hit at the perfect angle it will go a long way the wrong way. When I hit it right it goes much further than my Stingray, but there is that X factor to worry about when using a sharper-edged driver-type disc to roll with, as opposed to the rounder Stingray/Cobra/Panther style.

For forehands I prefer a Ram, and only a Ram. Throw it sidearm like a baseball as hard as you can and make it land about 50 feet in front of you and it will be sweet.

Jan 21 2004, 05:56 PM
The Elite X XS is the Best Roller i've come across, though you can roll anything. Z Xs for Cut Rollers! Z Talon for Forehand Rollers. Z Extreme Roller>? (wow)

The best roller I have ever thrown is the SE Valk. I love it because it is so fast and understable. Maybe the most understable disc I have ever thrown. I can throw it flat, and it will go about 200-250 ft. before it hits the ground. I find that rollers go WAY farther when they get out there before hitting the ground. Less resistance.

I wish this disc was still in production.

Jan 22 2004, 12:50 AM
I can throw a LS polaris roller forehand really well, but that's just me.

Mar 06 2004, 04:39 PM
Try a rhyno

Mar 06 2004, 06:02 PM
The Old CE Valkyries work really well, but since one is not in my possession I simply use a Champion Valkyrie. Champion Teebirds aren't bad either. Once you get your form down you can roll pretty much anything. I've gotten to where I can roll about 425' pretty consistantly, but that's nothing compared to others.

Mar 06 2004, 11:45 PM
Is there anything that rolls like a Stingray but has a deeper rim? I have a hard time clamping it, and as such I lose a bit of power and spin.

Nov 21 2004, 10:02 PM
I have questions about roller discs.

First off, I'm kind of interested in the Roller #3...a forehand roller by Lightning (I may have the wrong number, but it is the forehand roller disc). I found a local store that carries them, and I noticed a couple things:

1. It had a much larger diameter than the other discs in the bins.
2. It was noticably heavier than any disc I've seen in stores (upwards of 192g)

So my questions relate to what exactly makes this a disc good for a rolling throw? How would this disc fly should I decide to throw it normally? Is it a worthy addition to my collection / arsenal?

I've just started messing around with a roller when I threw an attempted forehand shot poorly with my (Glide?? the 2004 Ace Race disc...), and the disc rolled up and bounced off the pole on a hole I could never reach in the air even with a driver. I should work on my forehand since I can't throw one for crap right now...but that's another day.

I may have more questions later, but any help you can give me on these roller discs is helpful :)

gotta try the new Champion Sidewinder, it'll be available really soon. These things roll beautifully. I am not a good roller thrower and I can throw them rather accurately and farther than any disc I have ever tried to roll (sans a freakish lucky shot).

I rolled it on hole 9 Winthrop Gold and got to across the "water" to the monster drive landing zone. A good 460 uphill. It doesn't take much to throw it as a roller either. I throw with a little bit of anhyzer and about 3-5 degrees off my line and it lands at an angle and slowly stands up. I think it'd make a really good intermediate player's long driver. flippy with a lot of glide. great disc, going to bump something from my bag.

#1: Stop throwing Lightning discs

#2: I'm guessing you don't have a lot of power?(throw less than 300ft). Try any fast, stable driver. A Flash, Crush, Orc or Beast would probably work best. You probably don't have enough power to roll a Flick, Monster, or Z- Predator effectively.

Nov 22 2004, 12:50 AM
I have an X xpress as a backhand roller.

i cant do forehands worht [*****] but , i know someone who does some pretty big forehand rolls with a beast and now hes using valkries

I use an X xpress (for long rollers), and a Stratus X (for shorter rollers), I always carry these two discs in my bag. The Stratus has saved my ***** a couple of times when I had to make a backhand shot through trees and brush and I needed a disk that will pop up flat from a steep hyzer angle. When thrown flat, it'll turn and roll like no other disk I would recommend it as a great newbie roller.

Nov 22 2004, 11:56 AM
Well, thanks for the info so far...I don't think anyone has talked specifically about the disc I asked about (except for the predictable don't throw Lightning response, I'll throw anything I like, so that response didn't help at all. Thanks for the rolling advice though...

Maybe I need to focus my questions better...

Has anyone ever tried THIS disc, and what about its properties (large size heavy weight) have to do with being a more effective roller?

Nov 22 2004, 01:52 PM

Just to counter Luke;

Lightning is good for beginners, I started out with a 149g Lightning #2 Slice.
Although I do know a 12 time World Champion who as given a set of Lightning Discs by Lightning and a cash incentive if he won a tournament with just those discs. It only took him 2 weeks to get used to them and then won his next tourney with exclusively lightning.

Also do not worry too much about that weight ie 192g, the weights are denoted by diameter. A 180g Roc throws the same as a 175g TeeBird (yes I know they are different, my point is about the weights).

I do not throw forehand rollers except if I am stuck in heavy brush, but as far as backhand rollers, Leopards, Express, Flash are all good backhand rollers or else anything understable.

I may have the Lightning Rollers mixed up (#1, #2, #3?)...and this may not make a bit of difference. I believe Lightning's forehand roller disc is for an overhand thumb roller thrown like a fastball...not to say that it can't be used for a forehand roller...I'm just going off the picture on the disc!

I agree that the Leopards in any plastic are very predictable rollers. Also I have found that a slightly beat Flash is understable enough to be a long roller. I threw a roller 400ft with a Flash this weekend.

But the new Sidewinder seems to do what my beat up Flash is doing. We have a few people throwing them here in Birmingham already.

I did a pole on this awile back an the Valk won. I like(ed) the SE Valk best but, for pure D, im prolly going to wind up with the Sidewinder. Like Kid Roc says, a little longer in the air is a good thing. Wish i still had room in bag for stratus (old) as that fat rim had great forgiveness and she rolled over and went down faster than a ho full o' Gin for quick out of the shule rolls. Heard from someone in that thread the buzz was pretty forgiving like the old strat but had to be rolled almost verticle out of the shute like a bike tire. For beginners, id say a 150 class Leo beat is the poop as nothing does it faster. Actually, i keep that disk for brand new players to give it a whirl as I just cant keep a newb off the Hyzer!

168 dx teebird
174 champ rhyno
149 dx leopard
174 champ sidewinder

and the sickest, hyzer-flip to roller disc on the planet, that instantly adds an extra 70+ feet to anyones throw (when it acts right), my 150 dx gazelle, circa 1994, and soooo broken in it's ugly as sin. But I've yet to see another disc turn a sure cutroll into a swwwweeeeeet roll

Apr 08 2005, 01:10 AM
Hey all. Im pretty sure Im gonna be getting a portable net tommorow and since Im ordering it, I might as well get some other crap. I want a roller disc, Im thinking a Sidewinder, but I have no idea what weight is best. Id assume heaviest.
I really am not even sure how to roll yet, but I played around today and was rolling farther than I could drive. around 350+.
Any guides or tips on how to roll? Ive just been throwing EXTREME anhyzers. I just whip it around my head and it lands 10 feet in front of me and rolls quick.

Apr 08 2005, 01:32 AM
Most people I see throw rollers use a method like you describe, but for me it is much easier to throw flat like my normal drives and use a very understable disc so that it turns on it's own. I use a pro TL (170, and 172) because after hitting a few trees they become very understable. I personally think it's easier to let the disc do the work because I lose power when I try to throw extreme anyhyzers. Also It seems to me that heavier weights roll farther because they hold more momentum.

Apr 08 2005, 01:44 AM
excellent. Ive heard sidewinders are very understable. So I think thats a good choice. If I can get it turnover on a straight throw I think my rolls would get extreme range.

Apr 08 2005, 02:06 AM
As for the sidewinder it is understable, but not enough for me to roll it from a flat throw. And for reference my rollers are between 350' and 400'. But definately give it a try, even if it doesn't roll easily for you it will not be a waste of money. I love my sidewinder, on a calm day it will fly a mile.

Apr 08 2005, 02:12 AM
cool. how do is it roll into the wind?
I think upwind and downwind will be its main use. I seriously cant get any distance upwind.

i doubt many of the old threads are post-sidewinder. is there some reason you insist on telling people they should search? you make it sound as if their questions are stupid or redundant. one of the purposes of this board is so people can Discuss disc golf related topics. if people didn't ask questions there would be no discussions to search. plus your responses are very non-conducive to new people participating in the discussion.

Dick
Apr 08 2005, 11:43 AM
back to the discussion, the 'throwler' as i call them, can get you a little more distance but is more difficult to control actually. because you are throwing a more unstable disc a little wind will make the amount of turn over harder to judge. also it requires much more side to side room as the disc is actually turning right as it heads to the ground. a regular roller may not go quite as far, but i can put it down in a much tighter alley and i can vary how far it goes and how much it turns by varying which disc i use. my favorite is a ce valk, but i sometimes also use a really beat ce eagle or a stingray. i have toyed with a sidewinder, but it hasn't quite made the bag yet.

twoputtok
Apr 08 2005, 11:50 AM
I also have used a valk and a stingray but keep working with that sidewinder, it can out roll both of the others combined and it doesn't need as much side to side room.

I'm a weeney arm and can get the sidewinder to roll 450 -500ft.

The Z-Xpress makes a great roller. I've seen a few people that can't find SE Valks make the change to the Z-Xpress. Great roller right out of the box because you don't have to "force" it over, it just naturally goes that way.

I like to throw the disc 250-300' before hitting the ground and rolling.

Lyle O Ross
Apr 08 2005, 12:27 PM
The Z express is my go to roller, fresh out of the box it flips right over and rolls a mile. However, I just picked up a Sidewinder and it comes out a lot faster than the express (for me). However, I haven't gotten a significant distance increase out of it. That may be a practice issue.

Thanks for your concern, Rich, but if you read the original post carefully, the crux of his question wasn't really about which disc to use but in general how to throw a roller. Click on the link I provided and there are six threads on how to throw a roller. Why do we need another thread on how to throw a roller when any one of the links I provided will do the trick? I think the Z-Xpress is less stable than the Sidewinder so it would be easier for a newbie to roll.

I also think that "dark12" should try to air it out more before rolling. He'll really see some distance then.

Very good points and I concur; I have a reasonably polished roller and find that the Xpress rolls much easier than the Sidewinder. The one benefit to the Sidewinder is that it is (or appears to be) an easier roller in the wind but again, that takes a skill set.

I'm not sure I agree with the comment that rollers are more difficult to control. I think this may be based some in truth but also in the fact that few players really work their roller game to its fullest. Take Steve Rico for example. That guy can roll down a line like no player I've seen and he uses the shot extremely well. I've also seen some video of Climo throwing some wicked accurate rollers. I suspect what makes players uncomfortable is: 1) ground conditions, 2) the little loop around that rollers make at the end, 3) the possibility that the roller will flip over too soon and lose distance, and 4) the increased instability due to presenting wind with a larger surface area.

All of these are legitimate, but with a skill set can be accomidated making the roller highly effective. Even more so, in some situations, than any other available throw.

Moderator005
Apr 08 2005, 01:12 PM
Those are all good points but I think even the 1000+ rated players who have mastered rolling skills will agree that airshots are more accurate and preferable over throwing rollers.

Air shots are absolutely more predictable and accurate. The only time i roll is if the hole has a low ceiling AND is considerably long.

The first driver you ever owned. The one that is beat to crap and turns over so bad it's practically useless as an airshot driver anymore.

Doesn't *have* to be the first driver you ever owned, as long as it fills the rest of the bill.

I actually like rolling a Proline(champion) Monster, but that's NOT thrown like a classic roller would be.

For regular aired out rollers I like either a really beat X-avenger or a beat Gazelle.
I"m trying out a star sidewinder right now, but it's still too stable for my type of roller shot..

p.s. I don't throw rollers far. my furthest one was probably only about 500'

Well, there is no "best" roller disc. However, the 2 important things I look for in a roller disc are that it be understable and really fast. (This is for a distance roller, by the way.) There is much to be desired about a nice Teebird that can glide it's way down the fairway, but for a roller, I want it to get on the ground and go as fast as possible. Also, I want a roller disc that is durable. It is important to find a disc that is already understable so that you need only minor "beating in" before it flips like you want it to. Once it hits the "broken in phase," and it is a durable disc, it will stay there for a very long time. Rollers go through a lot more crap than drivers do. They bounce off sticks, rocks, trees and whatever else you can think of. Sure a DX Valk may be a great roller for a couple weeks but even a roller disc can get too beat up and too understable.

With that in mind, these are the discs I like:
Champion Sidewinder
Champion Valkyrie (this disc is very inconsistantly made. find one that is extra understable out of the box)
Z or X Wildcat
Z Flash (also find one that is an understable run)

There are some nice stable discs that make good accuracy and cut rollers but 90% of my rollers are for distance reasons and I use an understable run of the Z Wildcat. It is nice.

Good luck.

Elite Stratus- by far the best roller disc out there.

Accuracy is what is important, not distance imo.

Just the Gateway disc that I find more suitable for rolling. They have a good parting line.

Not doubt...with enough "love" (IE Beating the crap out of it) Illusions go sick far rolling. My roller is the very first Illusion I ever had....was my huge distance disc and now its lifespan continues.

Wildcat/Riptide are both great rollers. I bet a spectra would make a really long roller.

Slipstream GT's are great rollers outta the box.

Backhand roller:

First-run Sidwinder--171

I have had success with my Orion--168 and a Pro Orc--173. I get such a good grip on the Pro stuff I can turn over even some overstable molds.

Forehand roller:

Firebird--170ish...though, I dont throw forehand rollers very much...but, learning both is a plus.

I prefer the Z-Xpress. Ready to go right out of the box. I am going to give the Spectra a try once i get rid of this ball golf bug. Haven't been to my home course since the VPO 11/5, and have only played the Players Cup and a C-tier since!

for 360 chickenwing rollers I used to prefer a Jaguar. Twig has been getting some nice forehand rollers with a Z-Predator. I like rolling my Arrow for shorter attempts or my Element X for longer ones, but I only use snap-rollers and usually only for obstructed shots.

jim, do you remember that early run (maybe first) of Z-Cats that were dark blue and less stable than other Z-Cats?

If so, how does the stability compare? I have 2 left but am trying to find less rare discs to throw.

Dec 23 2005, 02:56 PM
Danny,

I don't remember the particular run your talking about... But my guess would be that the Spectra is a little less stable. I was under the impression that the first run wildcats were red and were actually more stable than later runs.

my_hero
Dec 23 2005, 02:59 PM
The very 1st run Z-Wildcats were red....with a USDGC ghost stamp, and these were fairly over stable for a wildcat.

The 1st production run of Z-wildcats were blank, opaque, and were quite a bit less stable than the Red USDGC ones.

I agree with Jim. The Spectra is a tad less stable than the run DR is talking about.

I recently went out and threw some distance rollers in the field after talking to Blake_T on the subject and he said that for max D you need to have the hit the ground 80-90% the distance of your average air shot. Ex if you throw 400 on an AVG drive your disc should go 320-360 before hitting the ground. When your disc hits the ground it should be at about an 80degree angle and it won't flip due to the lack of speed after the long flight and then it will proceed to roll pretty D@mn far. With this technique I had the 1st legit birdie ever on a 560ft dogleg right hole that left me like a 8ft putt and the 1st 3 on a 750+ dogleg left hole that finishes on a big hill and I had like a 12ft putt after rolling the 2nd shot.

I always thought you wanted to hit the ground halfway for the distance you want to go.

IE if you want to roll 500ft, then hit the ground after 250ft.

Of course, my air shots are accurate and long enough, so I really only throw rollers on utility shots or holes that have weird left or right turns with a limited ceiling. I have also started to throw rollers on heavily wooded courses where the ground is ~even.

My favorite roller disc is a SE Leopard. I can throw this with hyzer and get it to roll.

the_kid
Dec 24 2005, 10:57 PM
Nope because the speed of the disc is what causes it to flip so that means your probably tail right kinda hard right? I was getting the out about 390-415 and the would hold a straight line turn right but it comes back left which add even more D.

denny1210
Dec 24 2005, 11:04 PM
For all my rollers I look for the best place to land the disc and then throw whatever shot is required to get there. If all things are equal and the grass is cut short I prefer to lay down an overstable disc fairly early (about 100-150ft. out) I think the key is to find the shot that gets the desired results most frequently and not necessarily the one that goes 800ft.

the_kid
Dec 24 2005, 11:06 PM
Yeah but I was using this type of roller on 500+ holes that were fairly open. On shorter hole I prefer to throw about 150-220 out and then let it roll and finish left.

Yep that is exactly what happens, which is why I do not try to roll in a straight line and just air it out instead. But I was practicing in a soccer field yesterday and from one side I would air it to the middle of the next field and it would stay straight till it hit the fence across the other field. It is just difficult to get a disc to fly 400ft and hit on it's side. My SE Leopard just doesn't fly that far.

what do you guys think of the monarch as a roller? compared to road runner or avenger ss? pro beast? thanks for the comparisons

MikeG
Oct 18 2008, 07:47 PM
Compared to the Avenger SS (175g), I'd say the Monarch (175g) flips slower, holds an angle longer and gets a little more distance. Haven't thrown the other two.

Something stable to understable Innova discs Valkyrie,Leopard for RHBH I use Eagles for flick rollers Good Stable discs take awhile to stand up. You may find a Teebird good as well.

bravo

i use a storm or stratus for short control rollers either forhand or backhand.
i use a road runner for longer low ceiling releases.
i use a beaten star wraith for all out power roller that hits the ground no more than 60 feet in front of me then it tracks left till it stands up then rolls straight for a while then finishes on its top with a slow track right.

The disc makers have info on their web sites for what discs are appropriate for beginners. I would take their suggestions. Also, I would pay special attention to avoid discs marked as suitable for professional, expert or advanced players.

I'd say just experiment with the discs you have right now. One mistake (new) players make is having too many discs. There's much to be said for learning to throw the same discs using any throwing style. Doing this helps to focus on learning how to throw, rather than learning what the disc-of-the-month does. You'll be able to adapt to life better when one rolls into the lake and doesn't roll out :)
