Haven't seen a thread for info on the Ice Bowl...When will we know what the layout will be and what temps will be used? Any other pertinent info would be useful...

I am sending in my entry and plan on playing Advanced. I have been waiting 15 months to play in tournaments that matter, and i'll be ready...

Folks,

You can sign up for the Ice Bowl In Paradise (Sat 1/23) at pdgasignup.com (link at discsports.org) or get the flyer at socaldiscgolf.com. The online registration method is the best way to sign up now that we are within two weeks of the event.

Carl - good to see you back! The layout will be finalized very soon (today?) and I will post it up here.

The course is in sweet condition and the moisture has the Ridge looking pretty. Tuesday weeklies at 4pm are on tap (contact Ray at rdiaz90604@hotmail.com for any specifics) for those that want some organized play prior to the event. We are one of the 5 Golden Sombrero Ice Bowl series events this year also (check Allen Risley's thread here for more info on that - I am going to check out the standings up at the Palm Springs club web site after I get done with this post). So, come on up and play the Ridge on 1/23 - we will have big fun and lunch and we will honor Tim Selinske and Virgil Phillips with dedication of their memorial holes up on the course.

Count me in for the weeklys as I will be working in the LA area the next couple of weeks. I can bring a couple of portable baskets if we want to play the temp holes.

Folks,

The baskets are in position for round #1 now. The set up below will be 4 holes that we have used before and some of the oldest Alt. tees out there will be used at some point.

I'm looking forward to watching my Zephyr float towards the Chavez baskets and settle softly down beside them...

He's on the list. That would be very cool.

I really like Chavez Ridge, tight placement midrange shots, with punishing results if you go down the hill. Last year, the first time I played during Fling XII, ended up shooting -2 finishing 2nd in Int. At the time, I had very little midrange game, but I found the key to playing well was staying on the paths and avoid going down the hill. Should be an interesting battle Jan 23rd now that I have more than one midrange disc in my bag.

The Course looks nice, i've taken a good look at it the last couple of days. Good mix of longs and shorts. Just wanted to know what the changes for the second round are going to be, and which of the alternate teepads will be used. Thanks!

Carl, The Mad Hadder 008 (Dave Hadder that is...) has those details. He could tell you these secrets - but then he would have to kill you! :)

Nice! Fortunately I have encountered the Mad Hadder during my Ridge Re-con missions, so I think that I know what he has in mind. Looking forward to the event...

Hey Folks,

Thought that I would put out a quick note before hauling my Advil needing rear end out to unload the van (hey the Ice Bowl is over - I can go back to whining now).

The weather that seemed so justifiably worrisome ---- was BEAUTIFUL! The efforts of our crew (Steve Valencia, Ray Diaz and Dale Ventress) had the tees cleared and thanks to the real TD - Dave Hadder, the course was ready. The Ridge topography up there also seemed to help restrict mud flow onto the tees. If you played "trail golf" and kept from getting "Chavezed" - life was clean and good. And a personal thanks also to all of you that pitched in to help with the work. You know who you are. Your help running the Disc Arcade games and checking the scorecards and getting the results together and hauling stuff to the van - all this made this event one of the more stress free ones in quite awhile.

Review the results here:

http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9769

Thanks to all of you that showed up we raised some significant cash, asked each other "How YOU doing?" up at #18 - Tim's memorial hole and smiled as we imagined finding a 1933 Double Eagle on #7 - Virgil's memorial hole.

More specifics on the cash we raised when I put together the PDGA and Ice Bowl reports - but we finished off paying for the tees and covered some of the cash we want to raise to sponsor some of the Silver Lake Ultimate kids to the Spring Reign event in Seattle in April. We will be cutting a check to CCSEP for some memberships and we will bring the food that we collected and a check to the Burbank Temporary Aid Center. Although neither Oxfam or the Red Cross was listed as one of our charities this year - please respond with your ideas on giving one of those fine organizations a portion of the money that was raised.

Look for upcoming info on the Fling XIV - currently scheduled for April 10th, 2010. We run it like the Ice Bowl In Paradise except that the top 3rd of each division takes home prizes.

Please play in the next two Golden Sombrero Ice Bowl events. The next stop is the 3rd Annual San Marcos Ice Bowl @ Montiel Park on Feb. 13th and the final stop at Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista on Feb 21st. Results and more info should be available at www.pddgc.com and Allen Risley has been known to post up-to-date info at the So Cal Disc Golf Forum at the PDGA.com DISCussion Board.

Thanks, Cliff Towne

Thanks to Cliff and Dave H. for the great event! I had a great time on Saturday, but Sunday was rough...I didn't realize how out of shape my body had gotten during my layoff. Trudging up and down the hils of Chavez Ridge with a bag full of discs is a great workout for the legs.

I always enjoy playing at Chavez. It isn't long enough by far to be considered championship golf by any means, but it is still a great test of strategy and control. I only had one or two minor "Chavez-es," but I sure watched a few others' discs go rolling down the hillside. I just didn't have enough gas left in the tank at the end of the day to pull off the sudden-death victory in Advanced Masters, but I was glad to be back out on the course.

The Golden Sombrero points will have a bit of a shake-up after Chavez because of the large field. I hope to get updated points sent out to Bert @ pddgc.com tonight.

How *you* doin'?

Had a great time at Chavez Ice Bowl and we couldn't ask for a more beautiful day after the week's worth of torrential rain. I wish I played my first round like my second. I could of easily shot -10 that second round, missed 4 ridiculous in the circle putts. AJ, good job on finishing -7. I would of easily had you if it wasn't for local players on my card pointing out wrong baskets when I am leader on the pad. But I'll take it as a learning lesson. I think the battle for the Sombrero will end up being at Salt Creek, as I'm sure we will score -27 or better at pitch-n-putt Montiel.

Excuses, excuses... Ya know, there were tee signs with artwork and distances clearly marked for round 1 and round 2. I think Dave also gave us a pretty good description of the locations in the player's meetings before each round.

I'll admit it - AJ played better than me that day, and so did you. There, that's not too hard.
