I am pleased to announce that tee pad installation will begin this Thursday, August 20. The plan is to meet at hole 1 and begin working at 9:00 am. The state park will be dumping gravel & limestone which we will need to flatten & tamp before installing the rubber Fly Pads. The park is providing the tamper so we simply need volunteers to help run it. Shovels and metal rakes will be useful so if you have such items, please bring them. Don't forget work gloves.

Moraine State Park plans to install more tee pads this week (October 26-30). We're not sure which day as of yet, but I expect to hear something from the park manager early in the week. I will be sure to post an announcement as we can surely use volunteers. We plan to install Fly Pads on holes 3, 4 and 11.

We are good to go for tee pad installation today, Thursday, October 29. The work day will begin at 1:00 pm (and from what I hear, a practice round is occurring this morning at 10 or 10:30). Frank excavated all three tees on holes 12, 13 and 18 so all we have to do is tamp gravel and throw down rubber! We will be able to have access to the tamper around 12:00, but if you can get there earlier we can spread the gravel on each pad in advance of tamping. We also need to mark out more tees for Frank to work on Monday. Park management is focused on this project and it won't be long before we have all 18 holes completed! :)
Please help if you can....if only for a couple hours or so. Tools needed are metal rakes and shovels. Don't forget gloves.

Thank you to all the folks who showed up for the workday on Sunday. Even though the tamper quit working (broken belt), we got a lot of work done by hand. The pads installed on holes 12, 13 & 18 are temporary and we will need use the plate tamper on the limestone once the machine is repaired. Additional fill will be dumped around the perimeter of all the elevated tees to help prevent erosion and allow pads to be flush with grade for run-ups and follow-through steps.
Four more holes were marked for tee pad construction......holes 14, 15, 16 and 17.
Great job by everyone who has assisted with this project thus far, especially our two resident mules....Wags & Wilson. :)

I think you guys made Wags mad.
And what I don't understand is why would you build the teepads on 14 and 15 to the side of the worn out spots? It doesn't make an sense to move sod to the spots that are already worn out and making new tee areas? Seems kinda silly to me. Why wouldn't you build 15 where it already was. That ground is so tamped down from playing, it's gonna be hard for the sod to root.

Upon finishing the pad installation on Sunday, we informed everyone that we would then be marking tees on holes 14, 15, 16 & 17. J Gary, Scott Hartle and myself were the only ones who ended up marking the tees. Everyone else decided to play a round of disc golf instead. In my opinion, the people who were in attendance and chose to play a round of golf over proposing/marking tees have absolutely no room to complain (or get mad) about where and how we decided on those tee locations.

I understand that Jerry, but when the people who played golf put in well more than 20+ hours this week doing work, it was time to go play for once.
It's just a little insulting to the people who designed the holes when things get changed. Or to the people who have played them everyday for years.
I have no problem with any of the positioning of the pads, my only complaint is why would you move a pad 2 - 5 feet to an area with grass instead of build it where the grass has already been worn away? It just doesn't make sense?
The only pad that I question being moved is 17 white tee?? It is now equally as hard and long as the blue tee.

I understand that Jerry, but when the people who played golf put in well more than 20+ hours this week doing work, it was time to go play for once.
For once, huh? Many of the players who chose golf on Sunday instead of marking tees were also the same folks who decided to play a round on Thursday after completing the pad work on holes 5 & 6. Honestly, I found it almost comical that no one really said hello to me when you all were on hole 13 and I was walking down 18 to paint tee boxes last Thursday evening. I think it was Wilson who waived to me while others simply turned and looked. Every single one of you knew I was there to mark tees and every single one of you wanted to play golf after a hard day's work on 5 & 6....nobody wanted to stop their round to come help Jerry mark more tees. That is the reason I kept my mouth shut, didn't ask for help and ended up painting 9 tee boxes by myself that evening. I had to finish hole 12's gold tee in the dark. I was curious if anyone would come over to check on me after finishing their round. Wag and Wilson were the only two people who did.

Impossible. White tee is elevated above the green and all three pins are visible. Blue tee is below green elevation and the tee shot is blind to all three pins. I like your replies Jerry. And we did say hi when you were out there, but the crew had also been there since 8:00 AM that day and at 4:30 we finally got to play a round.
We already knew you were coming to mark more tees.
But yes we have no right to complain, but we can question the brain-altering-tee-thoughts that happened that evening.
The only thing of all the pads I don't understand is why would you dig up sod, move it 3 feet over and then excavate a whole new area. When the move of a couple feet did nothing to change the angle/paths/etc of the hole.
I think if you were the person playing after the marking like we were, you would think to yourself "now that just seems silly"
But yes thanks for the help and of course we appreciate it. As much as I would have liked to have stuck around to do more work on tees, I think I did more than my share this week at Moraine, not mention all the tees that KB, scott and myself did at Knob before the PFDO. When you got a group of 7 saying lets play, it's time to play.
Now my I ask what was the reasoning of moving 14 white and 15 blue?

and yes we knew you were marking tees, and no we did not help because we were already fighting the daylight left. And we all busted our butts all day spreading gravel and tamping tees. We just wanted to get a round in since the days are getting shorter and the weather turning worse.

16 gold has yet to be cleared/excavated and 17 blue is almost complete (Frank ran out of fill last week). We goofed on 16 yesterday as we installed the 10' pad on blue and the 12' pad on the white tee. :p That's an easy fix!
We also marked the remaining tee boxes to be prepped: 7, 8, 9, 10 and 16 gold. Frank plans to work on these this week and once finished he will then focus on filling the modified 2a gravel around our pads to help prevent erosion, allow room for players' run-ups & follow-through, etc. These pads are going to be done right, for sure!
The mechanical plate tamper not only needed a belt but the gas tank needed to be replaced. We're hoping the tamper will be fixed sometime this week. The plate tamper is operational and the Fly Pads have been delivered to each respective tee on the course. Pads were installed on holes 7 & 8 yesterday.
We will be having a workday this Saturday, November 21 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm (possibly later if people want to work into the afternoon). We will be installing tee pads on holes 9, 10 and and the remaining pad on 16 gold's tee. If we have enough volunteers in attendance we can also focus on tamping the pads which were temporarily laid down when the tamper broke earlier in the month. We have learned that several of these pads can be tamped by simply using a hand tamper atop the rubber pad. This may be the case for several of the Fly Pads......plate tamper may not be needed on all tees.
Tools needed: hand tampers, metal rakes, shovels, work gloves. Water is also needed for the plate tamper. If you have a 5+ gallon container please bring as the water greatly helps in tamping the crushed limestone and keeping the dust down.
If you cannot make it out as early as 8:00 am, please consider coming out later in the morning and working for an hour or two. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! Thanks to all the PFDS volunteers who have worked on this project thus far!

LOve the teepads but all of the loose gravel on the pads is quite annoying and a little bit dangerous. I wonder what we could do to fix this problem? Perhaps put some larger gravel on top of the fine gravel around the mats? We need to do something because these pads are just covered in that fine gravel. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been slipping on them because of it.
Any good ideas?

Dec 05 2009, 10:21 PM
I agree not only can they become slippery, but it will also shorten the lifespan of the pads. A certain amount of abrasion is ok and can even help promote drainage. The downside is that it is basically cutting the rubber and too much over time will cause excessive wear. Unfortunately I do not have any ideas on a permanent solution for this....yet

Dec 06 2009, 06:05 PM
I like the idea of larger gravel around the outsides. It seems like all of the little stuff gets in your shoes and is tracked onto the mat. Covering up the small stuff with larger limestone should keep this from happening.

Dec 10 2009, 01:42 PM
I think the larger gravel would eliminate all the small gravel getting transferred onto the mats. We should try it on a hole and see what happens.

Hole 18's blue tee was improved this morning. We raised the gravel base and gave it a nice crown so no water is running onto the pad. Also scratched out a small drainage ditch behind the tee which is helping divert some of the spring water around the tee area.

There are still a few piles of gravel which need to be spread around the Fly Pads on holes 10 and 16. If anyone has the urge to do some shovel and rake work, those are the two holes which need it. Course is close to being tournament ready for the Lakeview Championship this weekend. :)

November Greetings!
Hole 7's white tee pad was delivered to MSP this week. The PFDS is looking for volunteers to help lay this final pad and close the book on the 54-tee pad project at the Lakeview Disc Golf Course. We are also in need of volunteers to help remove leaves from hole 1 as well as a couple of other holes if time & man-power permits. The grass on hole 1 and hole 4 looked great this year because of the leaf removal last year. If you're interested in helping to beautify the course in preparation for Pittsburgh's first-ever National Tour Event, please bring bring work gloves and any of the following:
For Tee Pad Install:
Shovel
Metal rake
Hand tamper
For Leaf Removal:

Gas-powered Leaf blower
Large tarp
For Disc Golf following volunteer work:
You know what to bring....your game. :)
I am planning to arrive between 9-9:30 am, but if you can't make it that early, we'll gladly accept volunteers who show up later. Depending on how many folks participate, we'll have people working on tee pad install while others work on leaf removal. Hope to see some of you on Saturday morning.

They have closed the Lakeview Beach gate for the season (restrooms are now closed); however, the park rangers will have the gate "dummy-locked" which means it won't be locked, but it will appeared to be locked. If you show up and the gate looks to be locked, check the gate as the chain will actually not be locked. Be sure to close the gate behind you once you're inside.
Frank will be hauling the Fly Pad and gravel to hole 7 in the morning. I plan to get there early in the morning and start blowing/raking leaves on hole 1 until we have a group of volunteers ready to lay down the gravel & Fly Pad.
Thanks in advance to anyone coming up to Portersville in the morning. By the way, there is no longer a detour to the park. West Park Rd is now open.
