Proposing a course and we are looking into the safety issues of Disc Golf.

Has there been any surveys/studies on how safe or unsafe Disc Golf is?

Are there any courses near Horse/Bike trails that have had issues?

Thanks for your responses.

We had to re-design a couple of holes on our course due to them sharing the same space as an equestrian trail. In the early days of the course, there were so few golfers it didn't make much difference. As our numbers grew, the number of inconsiderate golfers grew also, and we started seeing more conflicts with the horses. Since the equestrian trail was there first, the city made us move.

Disc golf is probably safer for the players than most sports using park land, but its danger to the general population is higher because they normally do not know that a course exists where they are walking. There are a few bad designs that bring areas that are frequented by other park users into play, but most incidents are from people straying into unmarked disc golf fairways.

Absolutely. This alone should be the major selling point to the property owner on keeping the disc golf course area exclusive to disc golf. Walking is not allowed on the biking trails; archery is not allowed on the walking trails. This should be an easy sale to the property owner, in the interest of safety, to encourage them to keep people out of the disc golf course unless they are playing golf.

So what do you do, fence it off?
I'm kidding of course.

For the ones on private property, it's understood that it's for disc golf only. For the course at the public park, there's nothing else to do in that part of the park except throw frisbees. Sometimes people walk out that way to see historic earthworks near the course, but they are given a map and told to watch out for the golfers.

It works out pretty good since there's 535 acres out there and we only use about 50 or so. There's only been one disc injury that I know of and that was between 2 golfers. A very safe place that!
