Can anyone shed some light on this one

I got this in my email

Stimulus $$$ for Austin Frisbee Golf
http://www.texasgop.org/images/content/pagebuilder/27642.jpg
There it was, in a front-page story in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal - the City of Austin's proposal for $886,000 from President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package for a 36-hole Frisbee golf course.

Austin's Frisbee golf project was among $149 billion in items listed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors seeking stimulus money. The 18,750 individual projects were supposed to be "shovel ready" and create jobs around the country.

That followed a link to this page

Austin's slice of stimulus is a flippin' waste of money (http://www.texasgop.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=9400&news_iv_ctrl=1403)

Which also links to this article (nearly the same)

Austin's slice of stimulus is a flippin' waste of money City lists $886,000 Frisbee golf course on stimulus projects list. (http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/editorial/stories/02/05/0205frisbee_edit.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=45)

Now I love this game and will do what I can to put in new courses.

But this is just flat out plane wrong. How in the world can a 36 hole disc golf complex cost nearly $1 Million bucks?????

I am sorry, but I have already called both my Texas Senators to fight this bill.

The course funding proposal is actually part of the American Mayors' Report on "Ready to Go" Jobs and Infrastructure Projects (http://www.usmayors.org/mainstreeteconomicrecovery/documents/mser-report-200901.pdf) (page 296).

Austin's requests total over 1 billion (more than 18 states -- West Virginia's request totals 700k), while Texas is asking for over 10 billion.

it would be EASY to spend $1M on a 36 hole complex. thats only $30K per hole.

My understanding is that is was intended for a pay-to-play complex, which includes, based on my limited understanding, more than just the course. Maybe buildings, roads/parking, water/wastewater infrastructure, etc. I suspect one should view it as the costs to develop a park complex, rather than just put in a course.

It is some critical project? Of course not.

I didn't read the articles, but was it supposed to be a giveaway, or a loan to be repaid? That is a big difference to me.

Raul Alvarez Disc Golf Course: This project will develop a 36‐hole disc golf course that will be environmentally
and financially sustainable.

Looks like James has it right. I think it is funny that it is put under the "Water" heading.

I'm pretty sure i've seen more than $1M spent on an 18 hole course.

Give me 100K and I'll put a SCHWEEEEETTT course in up here in Lincoln. Heck, with the left over money, I'll give it to the local P&R for a perpetual mowing fund! :)
