My family and I would like to play in the Japan Open. Is this event for PROs only? I'm quessing 2010; we usually go on discgolf vacations and this one sounds like fun. Any info would be great.

I am a rec player and played in the 2008 Japan Open. I still paid the normal registration fees since there is only one entry level (Open/Pro). There were quite a few players there that were AM level and from what I could tell everyone had a great time no matter where they finished. It was probably the best vacation that I have ever had. The only thing that I didn't like was that they did not sort players like a normal tournament where it is random draw. They placed players by their ratings. Although I would have loved to play along with some top level pros, I'm sure that the top level pros are happy they didn't have to play with me. ;)

thanks for the info. I guess there is no Jr's division.

You can open a different pro division by paying an extra $100 I think. Maybe start talking to Dave Dunipace (Innova is a co-sponsor) about expanding the tournament since it is becoming more popular. I would still think that it will remain pro only because it is a major. Good luck and have fun if you go. It was definately one of the best experiences of my life.

Your entry fees will be a small cost in the overall expense of a family vacation to Japan. You should not let the absence of your preferred division hold you back from going.

was wondering about something- when signing up if you want to stay at the tower cottages but are unsure who you prefer to share a room with(because lots of people haven't signed up yet), should you fill out that part of the form or wait till a later date?

Turn the entry form in as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. Just state you currently have no preference for cottage mates. You could state if their is someone you want or don't want. Like you want someone from same state or a non-smoker, etc. Then, if you find someone you want to share with, send an email with your preference and have your cottage mate do the same.

The tournament entry fee is $150.00.
The stay at the tournament hotel is $100.00 per day/per person and includes breakfast and dinner. Hero Disc provides transportation to the hotel from Narita airport.
Plus your round trip airfare.

I can do round trip airfare from Tulsa for $1200. Room $500. I would also take about $800 with me. Looks like a player might be able to get by for close to $2,000, but I'd plan on at least $2,500.
Maybe someone that has been can enlighten us.

I missed that lunches are included on tournament days. Also beer and soft drinks are included at dinner. So the only thing you really need money for is to buy tournament discs and apparel or if you want to go sightseeing. They actually arrange some sightseeing tours for the players after the event.
Whatever it costs, it is worth it. You wouldn't be able to come close to this price ($100/day including meals) if you wanted to travel anywhere in Japan on your own.

Someone mentioned that they had heard that 150 class discs were not going to be required this year. Can someone please confirm or deny this?

Discs will be legal up to 159.9 grams this year.
What is the chance for losing discs at the Japan Open during play? I am working on putting together my lightweight bag, and need to know what I should plan for backups.

There are lots of chances to lose plastic including water hazards, thick rough and over steep cliffs. However, there is lots of new 150 plastic in the pro shop!:)

Would folks traveling to Japan be interested in discs like these? The Valkyries are that sweet gummy plastic and more transparent than the picture indicates. I've had all of them in my collection since they were produced. I did weigh all of them myself and that weight is noted.
I'll Auction the Orange Valkyrie and the 158.66 Eagle beginning Monday April 26th at 8:30 eastern.

Yeah BABAY!
I am SOOO excited to go here. My first trip off our island known as North America! Two disc golf tournaments and a worldly experience, I am sure that it gets better than that, but.....I won a poker toruney a couple of weeks ago and have a chance to win a seat to the big game in Vegas, but they are doing that on June 12.....so instead of a 1/32 chance to go to vegas, everyone there will now have a 1/31 chance....8( But I will be in Japan, not trading it for anything! (though it was mentioned that if I went to Vegas and won, I could go to Japan the next time.....I laughed, and said yeah right!)

There was still very little on the homepage compared to the BSF which was just an NT.
Congrats to Nikko......and better luck next time to Davery.
