On Nov 8, 2008 nine of the Disc Golf Birmingham family reached out into the local community and volunteered a Saturday of their free time to help build for a new Habitat homeowner. Working with friends and family of Julita Bates (new homeowner) and Mountain Brook Baptist Church, DGB was able to complete a wide variety of tasks, from installing windows, hanging siding, installing insulation, laying shingles and installing roof ridge venting.

Many volunteers had never volunteered for Habitat before, yet were quick learners who all said they had a wonderful time, learned a lot, and felt very satisfied helping a great cause and seeing the fruits of their labor taking shape throughout the day. Eartha McGoldrick said afterwards: "It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun. It felt good to do something that makes a very real difference! DGB should make this an annual event, and get more folks to participate!"

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry which welcomes all people -regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference - to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. Without the steady stream of volunteer help, Habitat could not have hoped to reach any of the great milestones it has celebrated since 1976: 100,000 homes, 150,000 homes and now over 225,000 homes. A new Habitat house is completed somewhere in the world every 21 minutes.

Disc Golf Birmingham is proud to have membership willing to take an active role and get involved in the local community. We certainly hope to make this a yearly event for an excellent cause.
