13th annual Scholastic Disc Golf Series 2008

This year's series includes 5 events -- 3 on Saturdays and 2 on Sundays (and none conflict with Steeler games) -- and playing Phillips Park, (where it all began), Knob Hill, Schenley Park, Old Economy and Deer Lakes.

To make sure everyone is in the running for the Scholastic Disc Golfer of the Year award, we will use each person's best 4 event finishes to calculate the series overall.

The top 10 players from each school at each event will be used to calculate the team standings.

The fees are still low, and Innova, PFDS and Grip It and Rip It are once again sponsoring.

Print out the attached flyer, put these dates on your calendar, round up your school mates for a team, and keep practicing!

More info will be posted here on the PFDS bulletin board and on www.pfds.org (http://www.pfds.org)

The 13th annual Pittsburgh Scholastic Disc Golf Championship Series teed off on Saturday, September 20, a beautiful end of summer day on the course where the series began, Phillips Park in Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Fourteen high school and middle school golfers were greeted with milk and donuts (a Phillips Park tradition) as they began their quest for individual and school team honors. After 36 holes on the challenging and hilly 9-hole layout, Marcus Ranii-Dropcho from Pine-Richland High School finished at the top of the leaderboard by shooting a muy caliente 44. Hamptons Sean Malone also went low (48-47) to finish two back. North Alleghenys 2007 Rookie of the Year, Justin Thompson, was third.

Pine-Richland Middle School dominated the grade 5-8 division as Connor Karran and Christian Ceurvorst finished 1st and 2nd.

The series, sponsored locally by the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society, Grip It and Rip, and Innova Champion Disc Golf, moves to Knob Hill Park on Sunday, September 28.

Players can register onsite from 9- 9:30 am for $7, and each player gets a free golf disc and a series Tshirt. Professional players will be on hand between rounds to put on a disc golf clinic and offer tips for young players.

Two 18-hole rounds will be played with a lunch break in between. Players are encouraged to bring a lunch. Parents are encouraged to watch or play a round themselves as part of the Knob Hill monthly tournament that will be going on at the same time.

The other events in the series include October 12 at Schenley Park, October 18 at Old Economy Park, and October 25 at Deer Lakes Park.

So I see that two of my favorite players and people are at the top of this heap, but what I want to watch on pay per view is the two of them dooking it out at Orange Crush.

Can't wait for Economy. Wish I could play on their card or just observe... but I'll kick baby jesus some of my love if he comes up to take a shot at Beaver County. I think a pair of 56's should beat the champ. And if I'm truly the TD, I can just disqualify him for being too Wooktastic.

YEAH FOR DISC GOLF KIDS! I'll try and make it out to Knob to observe and help out... if I can excuse myself for the day. That's right after the Hunt so it's doubtful, but maybe I can talk Milissa into coming out with me for a picnic and some walking around with the dogs. Could be fun.

The scoop...
Hampton HS takes the overall team lead in the race for the Pipe and Chains Trophy on the strength of a foursome of Talbot female players who came out for the first time.

3 players rep Butler HS for the first time in PSDGS

The news...
Sean Ryan Malone wins the HS division by a stroke over Marcus Ranii-Dropcho
Connor Karran wins MS division

The skinny...
29 players got discs, shirts, donuts and a couple hours of fun for a few bucks.

Next...
Scholastic event #3 will be held in conjunction with PFDS's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Schenley Park disc golf course on Sunday, Oct 12. Register at 9 am at the David Lawrence Pavilion near hole 7.

Sorry for the jumbled way these stats look. I'm working on a better format:

Hey Discateers --

The 20th anniversary celebration at Schenley Park on Oct. 12 featured new baskets, pin placements, BLUE TEES, and a free lunch for all 19 high school and middle school players.

It was a great day for golf, and for Hampton HS's bid to win the Pipe and Chains trophy for the first time as they increased their lead in the team competition. although North Allegheny is moving up with three of their players finishing in the top 5 spots at Schenley.

Marcus Ranii-Dropcho and Sean Malone continued to battle it out for individual HS honors, with NA's Tim Buresh taking the third spot. Marcus and Sean both shot 55 in the first round from the Blue tees (the first time high schoolers played from the long tees in competition), but Marcus' flaming 48 from the White tees in the second round game him a 4 shot win.

North Hills Middle School officially entered the series when 7th grader Zach Vestal competed for the first time. Zach shot a 60 and a 72 to get on the board in the Middle School division.

Players should make plans to attend the last two events of the series: this Saturday at Old Economy Park in Ambridge, and Saturday Oct 25 at Deer Lakes Park.

A lot to be decided at the 5th and final Scholastic Disc Golf Series Event this Saturday Oct 25 at Deer Lakes.

Although Hampton HS has a strong lead in the team competition, a huge showing from either North Allegheny or Pine Richland this weekend could scramble the outcome for the Pipe and Chains trophy.

In the race for individual honors, where a player's best 4 finishes are used to calculate their points standings,
Sean Ryan Malone leads Justin Thomson and Alex Watts. For many players, Deer Lakes will be the fourth event they need to qualify. All players who qualify will win prizes based on the number of points they have earned in their four best finishes.

As with every event in the Scholastic Disc Golf Series, each participant in the Deer Lakes tournament will get a golf disc with their $7 entry fee. First time players also get a Scholastic Series tshirt. Once again, a huge thanks to our sponsors Innova Disc Golf, Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society, and Grip It and Rip It.

Registration and the EDGE Skill Shot competition begin at 9 am at the Blue Gill Pavilion above the parking lot near hole 7 and 9.
