Greetings,

Just a heads up that the mini on 12/06 will a slightly different format. As noted on the Thread for the Club Meeting (http://discussion.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=885972&Main=816402#Post8 85972), the 12/06 mini will be free to all participants ... that's right free. SADC is putting a $100 worth of cash for the payout plus many prizes to be given away as CTPs. The mini will be 9 holes of random draw doubles. After the mini we'll conduct a breif end of year review meeting where the SADC Executive Council will speak about the year that has been and what to expect for 2009. I am personally encouraging all club members to come to this event for several reasons ...
1) Its your chance to get involved and make suggestions for next year. 2009 will be HUGE for SADC!
2) You get a free entry for the Holiday Ham give away
3) There's $100 worth of free cash up for grabs
4) There's approximately $110 worth of free merchandise up for grabs
5) Did I mention this your chance to be involved in the SADC happening for 2009?

Check back on this thread or the Thread for the Club Meeting (http://discussion.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=885972&Main=816402#Post8 85972) for more details.

Hockey is cool isn't it! Facts most of us native Texans didn't know.

The puck will travel, sometimes up to the balcony.

Pucks are kept frozen, otherwise they would freeze immediately to the ice.

And....No! I still don't quite understand the penalty system but:

There are two different types of off sides:

Regular offside
Two line pass

Icings
Icing the puck occurs when a player intentionally shoots the puck from his half of the ice all the way across the opposing teams goal line.

Types of Penalties
Minor Penalties- A two minute penalty. Used for lesser offenses.

Major Penalties- A five minute penalty. A five minute major penalty is handled differently than minor penalties. Because the penalty is severe, the penalty will not end if the other team scores. The other team will be on the power play until the five minutes have run down. They can score as many goals as they can.

Misconducts- A misconduct can be two, five, or ten minutes long. The way a misconduct differs from all other types of penalties is that no power play is awarded. The penalty only punishes the player, not the whole team. If the player is warrants a severe misconduct, he can be given a 'game misconduct', which banishes the player from the game.

Minor Penalty Descriptions

Hooking*
Holding another player with a stick.

Holding
Grabbing and retaining another player, or holding a player down.

Roughing
Being unnecessarily rough with another player.

Tripping
Causing another player to fall with a foot, stick, or any other method.

Charging
Jumping or taking more than two strides into another player.

Slashing*
Hitting or attempting to hit another player with a stick.

Cross Checking*
Holding a stick with both hands, taking it off the the ice, and hitting another player with it.

High Sticking*
Carrying the stick over the shoulders.

* -The referee can also give these penalties out in major form if the severity warrants it.

I did some checking on the Ace Pot Rules and found the following, "Ace pot is capped at $300. Once at $300 a back up ace pot is started." That means this Saturday we'll start working on a 2nd ace pot. If an ace pot is hit by a club member they'll win $300 and the back up ace pot becomes active the next week.

We'll likely do a random draw to give out the new tags to all those who are present for this weekend's mini.

Don't forget to come out for this week's McClain mini ... the ace pot for SADC members is $300 and its only $10 to join the club. Also don't forget that 2008 memberships ran out at the end of January. Candace or I will be taking 2009 memberships this weekend. Membership includes the 2009 SADC Bag Tag, which I'll have this weekend to give out.

I'll also have all the information on the THC Throwdown in Boerne on April 11th this weekend and will start taking sign ups. Sign up early for your first chance to play an event at this course. This is only a 9 hole course (but still a GREAT course) so space is limited.

I normally jump on these since I live so close to McC, unfortunately Lou is going in for another heart procedure Thursday, so everything is up in the air after that. If Scott or "The Lively Boys" can't make it I should have a better idea come Friday. If nothing else I can run up to Mc in the morning and do sign ups, then return about 11:00 for payouts.

I am going to get with the McClain Course Pro tonight and discuss some issues at McClain. Gonna try and get the Parks and Rec to do this but if not:

We really need to get some kind of small trench dug to get the water off holes 2 and 3. I dug about a 20 ft one by myself with a shovel in about an hour. I figure if we can get about 10 people with shovels we could get it to drain into the creek bed behind #2's basket. Ground is pretty soft right now. I will be at McClain this weekend to see what else we can do. I'll let everyone know when we'll have a workday.

Just throwing this idea out there...

In light of the fact that McClain is in so-so condition and the THC Throwdown is 2 weekends away, would anyone else like to move the Saturday mini to Boerne this weekend (3/27)?

I'm sure that some people would like the practice even if the temp holes aren't set up.

Nope ... all you have to do is show them a disc on the day of the event and they'll let you pass right on through. There is a $2 park entry or greens fee for the tourney but it is included in the entry fee.

I am cancelling this Saturday's Morning Mini at McClain because I will be out of town. Attendance at the Saturday Minis has been really bad. Two weeks ago 0 players...last week 2 players. This is another reason I am just going to cancel it instead of having someone else run it. The next Saturday Mini will be scheduled for 7-24-10. I don't know if Saturday is just a bad day for minis or if it's too hot to play or if course conditions play a role.....BUT if attendance does not pick up soon. I will not continue to run Saturday Morning Minis at McClain. We could look at other options....Any Ideas???

I'm sure once that the weather and course get better the turnout will improve. Personally, I haven't been going because there seems to be something going on every saturday morning, either tournament or honeydo's ect..

On the other hand, anyone want to do something at live oak this saturday morning (assuming my hand is better by then)?

Last weekend someone (I think it was Micah) had the idea to run one mini a month as a fundraiser for the add cash for the Fly Ink Open. Any objections to scheduling a rotating series of Doubles (similar to Jerry's Winter time Doubles) playing some unique layouts at area courses?

The twist I added to that idea was to use some different course layouts as a test for possible use in the final tournament. Can we throw that in the mix?

Also, 7/24 is LOSO so maybe the McClain mini is off for that weekend, too?

Hey Jason, attendance at the Saturday Morning minis has been very low and sometimes no one shows up. It has been like that for a while and I have posted on here if it doesn't pick up we would look at cancelling them. Saturdays are just not good days for minis and on Sundays LODGA runs em at UC. I think the issue was that Nov - Dec was so busy with tourneys and all of the holidays fell on weekends that attendance was low. I'm confident that people are ready to start playing saturdays again.

Bird do you want to run a mini this Say? If not, I can do that this week.

I posted that back in August and attendance was the same before that. We could propose several things to do with minis at the meeting.

In the cities I've lived in, here's what I've found with regards to successful weekly minis:

1. Play best disc doubles - always. This keeps things moving and doubles is less discouraging for newbies. It also helps your mental game by giving you a partner to think through risk reward scenarios. I think McClain is a great doubles course for this.
2. Pair up "A" players with "B" players randomly. This is how people learn. If there are too many "A" players, "A" pairs get a 2 stroke penalty. If too many "B" players, the "B" pair gets a 2 stroke bonus - same strokes apply for an "A" or "B" Cali player.
3. Make it cheap ($3 or $5 for each person) and pay out 100%. The money should simply be motivation for people to keep trying. $10 can get people to take minis too seriously.
4. Optional $1 ace pot or CTP playoff with no carry over. Ending with a CTP means everyone has a chance at cash.

If the objective of weekly minis is to promote the sport and strengthen the disc golf community this formula is what I've seen work well.

Thanks for the comments Lisle. Just to play devils advocate ...

I don't like doubles every week, I like to play solo as golf is a solo sport mostly. Maybe every other week to keep it fresh?

I am against segmenting players and assigning teams based on that. I am in favor of pure random draw doubles.

I am not really worried about costs. $3 is too cheap and isn't worth peoples time. I personally like $10, all fees included. It makes change easier too.

I don't like optional ace pots or CTPs for the ace that same day. Big Ace Pots are the single best way to get players out. That is noticed everytime it gets over $100 players start showing up more and more. Plus that's a benefit of being an SADC current member, you get all of the ace pot and not just that day's ace pot.

Let's keep this dialog going to get the best possible format.

I think our Wednesday night mini's do a good job of catering to newbies. For me, minis fill the competitive void on weekends where I am not playing a tournament

The idea of having the minis travel is a good one, especially with our series going on. What do you think about having the minis at the course of the next upcoming tournament? It gives the locals the advantage come tournament time of having played semi competetive rounds at the course that the tournament will be held at. For example, McClain until ice bowl, Boerne at least a couple of times before the THC, Pearsall before the SA Open ect. The key to making it work is having it planned far in advance. I know that I would like to play a mini at a course that is having an upcoming tournament. This may also draw more people from out of town to play the mini's who are planning on playing the tournaments. Thoughts?

Weds. Mini's have a nice turn out because of the format of the round. Short holes makes the round run really quick. I like the Weds. mini's but it really only helps my short game. Maybe a Putting League would be a way to get help get the Newbies and Rec players more involved with Disc Golf as a whole.

Traveling mini's sounds likea great idea. Having them at the course where the next event is gonna be held sounds like it would draw more people. The thing that holds me back from driving 45 min over to LO or UC is the $ on gas. I really need to have a chance to make the $ back that I spend in gas.

Doubles... I am for a random draw Dubz but I also like the Pro/Am Dubz that Lisle mentioned. I want to get better and by playing with Lisle, Phil, Marcos, Scott, etc. I see different things that make me open my mind to different options. I try to play with any and all newbies I see at Nani because I am trying to promote SADC. I find that by teaching any little thing that I know makes me a better player.

The biggest argument I hear from people is "I don't feel I am ready to play in a tournament" (even minis). How do you break that mentality?

The Wednesday mini probably has a better turnout because of what has been said before, they are quick and easy to play. They are also at the end of the day and people come after work and are able to forget about the office for a short time before the next day.

Saturday mini's have a whole slue of minor problems for the disc golf community, but one of those minor problems for us as a community is of major importance for the player and family. Those range from having a day to work around the house, ie honey dew chores, family outings, other disc golf tournaments, work, many work on Saturdays during the day, and for some, just plain ol' rest.

Abilene has both a Saturday and Sunday mini. Both are played in the afternoon with Saturday being singles and Sunday being doubles. Both are well attended. I think they have success because of the late start.

Traveling mini's sounds likea great idea. Having them at the course where the next event is gonna be held sounds like it would draw more people. The thing that holds me back from driving 45 min over to LO or UC is the $ on gas. I really need to have a chance to make the $ back that I spend in gas.

You need to have some time for doubles play. As Rick said. playing with the big guys is priceless, The PRO/AM doubles are the best. When I started playing and I got to play with Brian Schmidt, Chris Himing, Big Bird, and others from that era, I learned so much. We need to do that for the next generation. I even got to play on a card at LO with Scott Stokely for a tournament. Random every now and then is fun, but we have gotten too far away from the PRO/AM that we don't have the newbies coming out to play very often.

I also go out a shoot a round by myself and then end up playing with others and having a great time. How many times do we do that and spread the good KARMA? I remember the first time that I played LO and it was just 18 holes. Calvin Smith was 2 holes ahead of me and watched me play to catch up. WOW, to watch him handle a disc and throw several different ones while I played with just a DX Scorpion. I thought I was special when he let me throw several of his discs and use one of his putters. For 16 holes, there was nobody else on that course.

The biggest argument I hear from people is "I don't feel I am ready to play in a tournament" (even minis). How do you break that mentality?

The PRO/AM doubles is what did it for me and then when we did have a singles mini, PROs and AMS were paired every other singles mini. I know the PROS don't like this NOW and I have heard it too many times, but it is how the newbies learn and get the encouragement that they need. I guess I was just fortunate that I came along at a time that others put aside their pride and taught us how to play.

Sorry for the long post, just my 2 cents worth.

Also, SAPAR has started working on the McClain improvments so the course may be a little tore up as they are doing the work. Nothing that should impact your ability to play. Just an FYI so people don't freak when they see the course and bobcats out there and the like.

I will run them when I can....I too play tourneys and sometimes work on weekends:mad: but I will when I can. Dosent Marcos have weekends off???;)

Yes Marcos has weekends off, but I plan on playing a ton of out of town tournaments soon so I wouldn't want to commit to running a mini if I would have to find someone to cover it at least 2 times a month. I'll be more than happy to help run them when I can, but I can't commit to it long term.
