Does anyone use a 2 finger power grip for backhand? I cant get any distance using 3 or 4 finger power grips, theres just no spin or snap unless I use 2 fingers. Everyone tells me that I need to switch because all pros use a 4 finger grip

I have been noticing a trend among distance freaks.Marcus Kallstrom, Robbie Bratten, and Cory Sharp all use a 2 or 3 finger grip. Those 3 guys throw it farther on the golf course than anyone. I also know of a few others that throw extremely far with less than 4 fingers. Do what works.

Hmm, next time I see those guys I'll have to ask them how they describe their grip. I use a four finger grip, but in reallity my bottom three fingers (not including the index finger) impart the most force on the disc. You have to find what works for you in the end, but in the meantime try emulating the top guys in your area, ask them personally to show you their grip and even give you some tips.

Brinster is a 3 finger ripper as well.

I use two fingers. I dont have "D" (legitimate 325 accurately, 400ish on bombs) but I consider myself to be a decent thrower. I've tried the three and four finger grips and I cannot throw as well with either.

I think this is part of the reason I cant throw Destroyers, XCals, Forces, and the like. The rim is just too wide to control with my grip. I just started throwing Wraiths accurately in the last month . Thats about as wide as I can go while still feeling comfortable.

I say stick with what works for you and your comfort level. If you have field time throw the four finger for a whole session. Remember, you cant try something twice on a course and consider it practiced.

Have you ever tried Millennium's Orion LS or LF? Neither have the wide rim of the newer max distance drivers but they manage to go just as far.

no I havent. Millennium is a company that is seen very little where I am from.

I throw Diablo DT's as my main "D" driver. Their rim is smaller than a wraith and it flies best at 85% power so I dont have to worry about laying into it for the disc to get out there.

Yah I switched to the 4 finger power grip for about 2 months and never got anywhere with it, even practicing in fields. As soon as I went back to 2 fingers, i got all my distance and control again. glad to hear that some of the longer distance throwers use 2 or 3 finger grips. I can get decent distance, but ive been told ill never get to 500ft with this grip

The millenium orion LF is one of my favorites, but nothing goes as far as pro orc for me.

i use the 4 finger power grip. i have long fingers, so the wider rimmed drivers fit my grip better. would a 2 or 3 finger grip make it easier to throw a long anhyzer or tunnel shots?

in my opinion, yes.

I have never tried 2 fingers, but when I use 3 the disc seems to come out early. I use 4 all the time with about 400-450 (this is real distance not MB distance) for max d.

Just out of curiousity, why does 2 or 3 fingers give more distance?

I dont think it works for everyone. Every player ive met used the 4 finger grip except one guy because thats how they get the most distance. its the opposite for me, i have no idea why, i was just curious if other people experience the same thing. All i can tell is that with the 2 finger grip i get tons of snap, and with any other grip, pretty much zero snap.

Guess I'll have to check it out in an open field.

I think I get more snap with a 2 or 3 finger grip than I do with my customary 4-finger grip. It is definitely a more audible snap anyhow.

But I feel I have much more control with 4 fingers. I don't know if that is due to the muscle memory I have developed or due to the shape of my hand.

I think the best advice in disc golf is to just stick with what's most comfortable and make it work for you. Although there might be something to the fact that the best players in the world use the same 4-finger modified power grip... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28ABf6csQpM)

well Robbies hands are huge, he can palm a BASKET BALL. so his 2 fingers are like my four, he has just as much hand on the disc as i do. Matt Hall tried to show me the 3 finger power grip, but nope. my 4 finger is consistant and can get out to around 450. Robbie can crush with 2 fingers yes, but his hands are huge. the only thing i will say is, while playing around with 3 finger release, i did seem to learn how to get more rotation on the disc which when i went back to 4 fingers i am throwing further. i cant do 3 because of early release but im pretty good with 4.

Read Dave Dunipace's comments on the power-grip. He essentially advocates a three finger grip. The pinky is placed on the disc but only to hold it in place, the snap pulls the disc off the ring finger (if I remember correctly).

I might try 3 for awhile. maybe going from 2 to 4 is too much of a change.

I just switched from a 3 finger to a 4 finger grip. The video in MikeG's post is the one where David Felberg is talking about grips. In it, he mentions that he uses a 4 finger power grip, but more importantly, he shows how to grip a midrange using a fan grip. This is done by putting 2 fingers on the bottom side of the flight plate to give better control while still having the index and pinky on the inner rim. With a 3 finger grip, this is impossible (or very difficult) to simulate, but he mentions that EVERY time you grip a midrange, it should be a fan grip. He is the World Champ, so he must know what he's talking about. He also mentions Climo, Barry, and Avery all grip the same way.

I didn't think it made sense to grip a midrange with 4 fingers and a driver with 3, so I made the change for everything. I am getting more distance and control, but I also changed my runup at the same time (reduced the amount of time I am turned away from the basket), so I can't say for sure which one is creating better drives. I am guessing grip change = distance and runup change = control.

I have gone back to the 2 finger grip because I spent about a month playing horrible disc golf trying to throw with 3 or 4 fingers and not getting much over 300ft. I have discovered the more fingers I add, I get proportionately less spin and power, and my coordination seems to disappear. However, this comes in handy for mid-range shots because I can switch to 3 fingers and get a more controlled glide. With 2 fingers it seems like the disc comes out of my hand at about 200mph and with 3 or 4 fingers it just flops out like a wet paper plate.
