The follwing is a cut and paste excerpt from the Outsiders news letter....
Chico's Park Commission will meet on 7PM on Monday, August 25th, in downtown Chico (421 Main Street City Council chambers) to approve the environmental report for the Bidwell Park Master Management Plan.
That report lays out several options for disc golf in Upper Bidwell Park. To summarize the options they are to improve the site for disc golf, leave it the way it is, or remove disc golf and hire consultants to restore the area. After spending $600,000 to create this plan it is unlikely that the city will leave things the way they are.
We believe that there is a Park Commission majority that would vote to remove disc golf. The final decision will rest with the City Council but the majority on the council receives campaign support from the group that wants disc golf removed.
If the Park Commission votes to remove disc golf on 8/25/08 then it will be much more difficult to get a positive result from the City Council. If you want to continue playing disc golf in Bidwell Park it is essential that you make decision makers aware of your opinion.
This newsletter has three things you can do to support disc golf. Please do these things now.
Write A Letter To The Editor
1. Write a positive letter to the editor in support of disc golf in Bidwell Park. Do this by Sunday 8/17/08 to ensure it is printed before the meeting on the 25th (here is the link http://www.chicoer.com/letters).
You can keep it short and to the point. You love the park, you love disc golf, keep the two together. A letter to the editor lets city officials and members of the public know that this is an important issue.
You won't be alone in submitting one. Others are already doing it.
Attendance Counts
2. Attend the meeting on August 25th and ask the Park Commission to approve disc golf in the park plan update.
Don't expect someone else to stand up for your park use. There are people actively trying to remove recreation from Bidwell Park. It is happening to disc golf, and paragliders are now getting the same treatment.
This ends when the public shows up and demands continued access to public land.
Seek Council
3. Contact your City Councilors and ask them to support disc golf in Bidwell Park:
City Councilors are hearing that disc golf is ruining the park. Some will be receiving campaign contributions from the same people that hired lawyers to remove disc golf from Bidwell Park.
Disc golfers don't have lawyers. But a simple meaningful email exchange with any councilor can help. Ask them to make decisions that are good for healthy recreation. As a voter you should have that conversation.
