SO what is up with the cup this year. I have heard lots of rumors like there will be a GM division, there won't be a GM division. I heard J Gary is playing for IUP. I have heard so many rumors it's getting out of hand.

Does anyone know the format for this years Can-Am cup. Granddaddy told me it would be the same format that it was last year??? If so, is PIttsburgh trying to put together the same team??

I know Jay Gobrecht said he would love to play again. J Gary??? It would be nice to win the cup again. I know that Sid's spot is up in the air and we need a new am player.

So lets get these teams together. Is IUP bringing a team? I know Alanna and Lori both want to play. Lets get these teams together. We need to bring the cup home again.

We need to have a club meeting to discuss this among other things as well.

And to set the record straight IDLA(IUP) is forming a team.
The following are definitely in. Sorry Pittsburgh it was J Gary's idea to do this.

J Gary
J Thompson
K Poole
A Poole
Marcus D.
(one am spot to fill)

One more thing, I did talk to Jay Gobrecht about it two weeks ago. He said he had a gig that weekend so he might not be able to play.

sandalbagger
Jul 29 2008, 02:43 PM
thats cool Kurt. I am discussing with granddaddy right now about the GM/women spot as are some other clubs. We are pushing to have the same format as last year. Because the way it is now, PFDS will have 0 teams coming to the CUP.

sandalbagger
Jul 29 2008, 02:45 PM
But if we can get Lori to play...............

It would look like this for now.

Chris Deitzel - Open 1
Tim Wright - Open 2
Lori Merriman - Women
Speakerbear - Masters
Dave Olcott - Am 1
??????????? - AM 2

I can't believe J Gary doesn't want to defend the cup. huh.

I might just have to sit this one out myself this year though.

Jul 29 2008, 02:49 PM
But I am sure if we have to have a women that Pittsburgh will only be bringing one team to the event, if any???

That means J Gary is sleeping in a tent this year ;)

Jul 29 2008, 03:11 PM
He told me, J Gar that is, that he's won the cup enough times with Pittsburgh and that he wants to represent his Home Town of Indiana. I certainly don't mind considering that just another good player on my team.

I do agree that the format should be the same as last year. just not enough females to go around.

And yes, you guys should make him sleep in a tent :D

Jul 29 2008, 03:17 PM

I'm gonna do some thinking, but I am thinking about not playing myself this year.

That is unless my phone call to Avery and Val goes successfully :)

There's plenty of Ams players to pick from.

Stella
Matty McDonalds

Dave Kurht
Greg M.
Scott H.

sandalbagger
Jul 29 2008, 04:05 PM
I'm not worried about getting enough players, I think its more the fact that many of the players from last years winning team are pretty upset that J Gary has left the team. Not that we can't win without him, but the fact that he doesn't want to defend the cup with his winning team is kind of disheartening.

Once again, I think the PFDS should have a offical meeting to discuss this and other PFDS matters. It's been 6 months I think since the last one.

I wish I was an AM :)

Kurt you guys should not feel bad about this at all. I think the part that bummed me out the most is that I heard the rumor from Luke Butch that J Gary wasn't playing.

It's not really a big deal as we wouldn't have the same team anyway without Jay and Sid. Just wish I Would have heard from someone local first. Not VEGAS!!!

But rest assured, I am sure that P-Burgh will get a team together, and I look forward to playing a match against J Gary like we did 2 years ago. And Lori will be thrilled to get to play on the same team as me.

I pretty sure it's the same as any other PDGA event. Have you ever accepted cash?

KP....I don't think "accepting cash" has anything to do with pro vs am nowadays. Player rating is now the determining factor for PDGA events. That's not to say, however, there could be additional restrictions pertaining to divisional status at the Cup. A good question for J Gary....

sandalbagger
Jul 30 2008, 09:49 AM
For the Can-Am Cup you must be a true am. registered as an am and have never received cash at an event. That is part of the Can-Am cup rules.

Also got an email from Granddaddy today saying that the Women field will now be Women/Grandmasters like it has been before.

So our Pittsburgh Team for now is:

Chris Deitzel
Tim Wright
Lori Merriman
Mike Speaker
Greg Meitus (maybe)
1 more AM

sandalbagger
Aug 01 2008, 04:35 PM
Greg Meitus is playing for Syracuse...soooooo

Josh Smith might play Am 1 for the A-team if allowed. If not, he might be willing to play open on the B-team

A-team
Chris Deitzel
Tim Wright
Mike Speaker
Lori Merriman
AND 2 AMS TO BE DETERMINED

B-team could be

Josh Smith
Josh Arnette - Sid Olcott - Dave Olcott
Mike Hoeg
Mike's lady friend
Chris Hoeg
Josh Charlton (if not on IUP) or any other AM.

THese are just some ideas. If you are interested in playing in the can-am cup, post something here so we can try to get you into a team. The last few years we have picked players by player rating, and might do the same this year. But I want to know who really wants to go.

actually, I don't know if Speaker will be bringing his RV this year from what I have heard, and of course ANYONE can come into the cabin as long as they don't take my spot on the loft. Women preferred.

Tom Moeller
Mike Moeller

Josh Arnette (O)

Other players to encourage to come out and play:

Craig McCloud

OK, the first Pittsburgh team is formed, and we are trying to get the North Country Brewery to sponsor us as well as donate a keg to the event. If they do sponsor us, I believe our team will be either The Stinky Hippies or Wee Heavy Imps (names of 2 of their beers)

Team is

Chris Deitzel
Tim Wright
Lori Merriman
Mike Speaker
Jason Gibson
Joe McLaughlin.

Jason and Joe are both NCB employees which will make getting sponsored easily and both played in the Ironwood Open. They loved the idea, and I figured I would try to bring some new players to the event.

I am also willing to help put together a second team if anyone would like. I believe I can get a girl for the team as well. If anyone wants to get a team together, send me a PM, call me or post here and we can get another team together for sure.

Indiana Team is set:

J. Gary Dropcho
Kurt Poole
Alanna Poole
James Thompson
Marcus Ranii Dropcho
Michael Dropcho

There are easily enough players for two more teams. Talked to more than 6 people today, including two women, from Schenley who are interested.

If desired, I could do shirts for the teams, but then teams may want to do their own thing.

Pittsburgh TEAM slightly revised as one person would not be able to make that weekend.

The official team is:

Chris Deitzel - Pro 1
Tim Wright - Pro 2
Mike Speaker - Master
Lori Merriman - Women
Josh Smith (WV) - Am 1
Jason Gibson - AM 2

I believe we have put together the strongest possible team that we could with this roster. SOrry if I left anyone out of the event. I would love to help get together a second team as well if anyone wants any help.

I just spoke with KB and he wants to play.

So if Josh Charlton will be the captain

Team B could be

Pro - KB
Pro 2 - Tom Moeller
Master - Mike Hoeg
Women - Mikes lady friend
Am 1 - Josh Charlton
Am 2 - Dave Kuhrt

That is all just theory, but for sure team 2 should have Charlton and KB. As well as Dave Kuhrt who has said he wants to play for sure. The rest of the team is up in the air. PM if seriously interested in playing in the cup.

AM2 - Matty McMillan

I have a phone call list for after work today. hopefully with a few calls the team will be solidified.

Tournament Schedule

Saturday, September 6th
8:00am - Mandatory Captains Meeting
Players meeting - 8:30am / tee off - 9:00am sharp!
golf / Floating Lunch / golf
Pig Roast

Sunday, September 7th
Players meeting - 8:30am / tee off - 9:00am sharp!
27 holes / Floating Lunch / Final 9 for top four teams

Team Roster Requirements
6 person teams (a team can actually bring between 0 & 4 pros)
2 open (pro/am)
1 master (pro/am)
1 grandmaster/woman (pro/am)
2 amateurs - *NOTE - ams must be true ams, not a pro with a low rating
*All non-PDGA members - $10.00

Team Residency Requirements
A team must consist of a minimum 4 people from the geographic area that's being represented.

Cost is $330.00 US for each team (or $55 per player)

The Format (if we have more than 10 teams we will have to play more rounds on Sat)

Saturday:
Like last year, we will break up into divisions, then split into foursomes. These foursomes go out and play three 9 hole matches during the first round of play.

Player A plays Player B and Player C plays Player D for the first nine holes. Then A plays C, B plays D in the second nine hole match. The first round continues with A playing D and B playing C. (thus, you play everyone else on your card once)

Toward the end of these 27 holes stop and grab a quick lunch as you pass the clubhouse.

Same format for the afternoon.

Then we party at the camp site. Pig Roast, bonfire, live music, putting contest, swimming, whatever.

Sunday: Same as Saturday morning... After each team has have played all of the other teams in the field, match points are added up, and the top two teams play each other head to head in a 9 hole match to award Gold and Silver medals. The third and fourth place teams play off for the Bronze and Copper.

Awards, pictures and we go home.

Tournament Point system
The format has been match play from the beginning. One point is at stake in each match -- For example, Open player #1 from Team A plays Open player #1 from Team B in a nine hole match. The player with the most holes won is the winner of the match, and earns a match point for his/her team. Ties in the match earns both players' teams 1/2 point.

An accumulated match points system is used. All players (an am Master playing a pro Master for example) must play the same course, and that the points accrued by teams in the preliminary rounds are used to set the seeding for the medal round, but do not carry over into the medal matches. The top two teams from the preliminary rounds play for the gold medal, the third and fourth place teams after the preliminary rounds play for the bronze.

We use the match points system to determine the medal round seeding because it makes every match played equally important.

Here is what I have got together if Teresa will play

KB Clark - Masters
Viper - Open 2
Zack Zimmell - Open 1
Matt McMillan - Am 1
Harold Hokanson - Am 2

We just got back from Browns Farm and I took Gibby, Lori and Harold up to play with me. Gibby aced hole 11!!! Everyone had such a blast. Harold wants to play real bad.

Keith Clark
Brian Grace
Matt McMillen
Mark Prestopnick
Curtis Spence
Teresa Steigerwald

All of these players confirmed to me personally that they will play. I am sending the team's entry fee to Grandaddy and doing shirts for the team.

It appears that NCBC was slighted 2 points in the final calculations. This means that our team would have finished in 4th place and been in the medal round.

Here are our scores.

NAME-------------wins----loss----tie------------points
Chris Deitzel 4-2-3------5.5
Tim Wright 2-6-1--------2.5
Lori Merriman 2-6-1--------2.5
Mike Speaker 4-1-4------6
Josh Smith 5-3-1---------5.5
Jason Gibson 6-2-1---------6.5

J Thompson and Marcus split their rounds and Alanna won on the last hole of hers. Michael D. had some tough competition against Barbo in the finals.

Trying to get in touch with granddaddy. I think the scores definitely need to be checked for every team. I am sure that we had 28.5. And if Chainbiters did move ahead, they would have had to at least get 11 points on Sunday to tie us, perhaps more because Ohio 2 was in 5th at 17.5 and we had 19 after Saturday. So Chainbiters had less than 17.5 meaning they would have had to win at least 11 of the 18 points on Sunday to just tie us. And that is if they were tied with Ohio 2 after day 1, but I thought Chainbiters was in 7th after day 1. So????? I'm thinkin we got screwed.

The only one I don't know is Marcus vs. Josh Smith

I'm pretty sure I overheard the guy collecting scorecards say that Chainbiters scored 12 points on Sunday. I know that Amanda won all three of her Sunday rounds. But it's possible there were scorecard shenanigans. I know one of the women I played never turned in the scorecard for a round I won (presumably an accident, but it caused much confusion).

In Whatisit world, we had a lot of fun and finished 7th out of 10.

Marcus won.

3-3 VS IDLA.

Does anyone know who Chainbiters played on Sunday? They played us and who else? Basically they would have had to get 8.5 out of the other possible 12 points from the other 2 rounds. Trying to figure out who they played.

Even if Chainbiters scored 12 points on Sunday, that would have put them at 28.5 points with us. So.....we need to figure out what is going on.

So there are possibly a few scorecards wrong. I hope that the results are all correct but there are for sure some total points that are wrong. Perhaps for more than 1 team. I would just like to see all of the correct totals.

Our score was wrong, but we still lost to Chainbiters by 1/2 a point. ARRRGGGHHH. All I had to do was tie Eric in that round and we would have made it. Arrrgggh. I had him, and then gave up points on 2 of the last 3 holes. Well the last hole he parked to win, but the other hole was a dumb mistake. They would have had 1/2 point less and 1/2 point more. Would have moved us 1/2 point ahead of them. Oh well. Next year. Our team played pretty solid overall. We were only 2 points out of 3rd, and just behind IDLA. I'm already putting together my team for next year.

What are you thinking Goocher... I thought you couldn't handle 81 holes of Discgolf in two days. :D

I actually was almost positive of Chainbiters score. Back nine and Amanda is alot to take for the 10 th round in 2 days. I counted their score 2 times to make sure. So- rex will make the corrections for the records?
