There was a great article on the BBC this morning. A Japanesse cycling sport called kirin (sp?) made it to the last Olympics and they demonstrated clearly what the PDGA needs to do to get us there. They bribed the UCI (Cycling association) with about $3 million in gifts to get them to put the sport to the Olympics Committee.

At 10,000 members, that's $300 per member. I'm writing out the check now...

There's a minimum requirement for the number of countries where the sport is played. That's the first step. Need Afican and South American tours. Not looking forward to the preliminary work needed to build jungle courses...

I don't know, if you mistakenly picked up an Israeli made mine and tossed it at the basket, no one would know if you missed. :D

On the other hand, open fairways!

From Wikipedia: "To be able to be competed at the Olympics, an event must be practiced by men in at least 50 and women 35 countries, on three continents." We've got five continents now with the addition of Egypt (Africa) earlier this year with a sanctioned event. Now we just need more countries.

you overlooked something important in the olympic consideration chuck... you only need 25 countries to make it in the winter games! I think we can pull that off!!! ;)

i also read somewhere else that its actually 75 countries for men's summer and 40 for women's summer

Here's some info about getting a sport officially recognized which would be a great first step.

We've already been in the 2002 World Games and drug testing was involved. Another thing that's needed is an international association overseeing the sport. Neither WFDF nor the PDGA totally fills that requirement so that's another evolution needed.

They tried for 2006 but we didn't make the cut. Not sure how it's going for 2010. They're every four years in the same year as Winter Olympics now.

the next world games are in 2009: Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Sorry. The Pro Worlds we ran in 2001 was the qualifier for some of the disc golf teams going to the games in Akita. I forgot it was immediately after Worlds and not the following year. Either way, disc golf got excluded the next games in 2005. Haven't heard if they made it back in for 2009.

No I'm not and stop putting words in my mouth.

I was stating that all olympic sports drug test and we don't. That there is a problem.

Even if we did, other issues like the ones Chuck said would prevent us from getting there.

so, why would the thREaD be ended?

your ending the thread clearly points to drug testing as THE SOLUTION to disc golf olympic participation. all other issues are inconsequential since there is no need for further discussion as illustrated by your awesome thread termination

Exactly. I played in an A.P.A. pool league for years where the annual dues were only $20 and you get just as many perks from them as you do the PDGA. Don't get me wrong I'm not bad mouthing the PDGA, I just think the membership dues are KIND of HIGH.

But I did my "awesome thread termination" in your oh so crafty use of the English language so we couldn't talk about *whispering* the olympics *end whispering* anymore.

So I was just curious if in your nearly 6+ years of playing disc golf in this area if you were actually going to attend a work day for the first time. It would seem this sport has given you a lot and you would want to give back.

just because you tried to end the thread doesnt mean i have to observe your termination aTTempt.

and why dont you get some facts straight before you make baseless accusations. ive done work on courses in many areas, long before you decided to get out from behind your computer and join the ranks of the TTru backbone of the sport. some do it for their unselfish love of the sport and some do it to pat themselves on the back in front of as many people as they can show...

cool to see us listed as an official sport (even if we've been snubbed recently)... it says the sports competed in are subject to the venue and if they have room/equipment or not. I'd guess they dont have the land let alone any permanent courses or the desire to put one in.

to me I see things like this as something that the PDGA could get behind. Or maybe even finding a city in the US or in another area w/ DG to try and get them to try harder to get the games.

wonder what the qualification process or stipulation would be on who would get to play anyway.
