Perhaps we need to add another element to disc golf to get more spectators at our highest level events?

In DG's defense, the game of chess in the form played today emerged in the 1400's. Similiar Indian and Persian forms of the game are even much, much older. Give DG another 600 years and i'm sure we'll have more than 1,000 spectators.

However, my guess is these spectators came to see the boxing more than the chess. Not sure what we would add to DG. Possibly juggling chainsaws after every 3 or 6 holes? Maybe 2-on-2 guts to 5 points with putters?

Oh, they came to see the boxing. Well then, according to Wiki, Boxing was an olympic sport as early as 688 BC. :D

Wait, isn't this the attractive spectator's thread?

The question is whether DG would be the chess or the boxing equivalent in the combination. Both of those sports individually draw more spectators than the 1000 at chessboxing. So their combination currently has less spectators than each individually. So what big spectator activity can we combine with DG such that even getting their reduced number of spectators might still be 20-50 times more than our spectator base by itself? Rock, paper, scissors? Spelling bee? UFC?

Gotcha! Looking for any new thread on a slow day, eh?

I'm thinking maybe a cross between disc golf and dodgeball.

Hold a wet T-shirt contest in every water hazard and offer a free beer to every spectator after each hole played.
Maybe obtain sponsorship from a local gas station and have door prizes for free gas.

attract more spectators by having live webcams on jasontv or whatever the website is... good job Maple Hill! got a bunch of people more interested @ my house today when I had a lot of people over for happy hour and had it up on my TV... will be much better tomorrow w/ live coverage on the course instead of just the scoring shed & 18

If you were actually paying to watch, then we might have something. It's a start though.

we're paying to watch in a way... our interest online and on the course and those that go to the website are paying in a way by giving the TD ammo to show Vibram and other sponsors just how much their name is getting out there by sponsoring the tourney.
i still fail to see why everyone thinks viewing online should be pay per view to actually count for something... seems like its putting the cart before the horse. If another tourney wants to do video the same way they are doing @ Maple Thrill this weekend and get a sponsor to give money and sponsor the live feed then that is the next step to me... still getting out to the people online and if enough watch helping prove to sponsors that they are getting exposure for their money.
to get back to what we could add to our sport like the chess/boxing... how about we combine a DG tourney with spread sheet/ratings crunching skills. That'd pack the seats! ;)

We played just that as kids, using little blue discs we got when we bought our sneakers. We called it "Odd Job" (after the Bond character) and wherever a disc hit you was chopped off. Lots of hopping around on one leg, kind of pythonesque...
Hasn't made it to TV yet.

Little did you know yelling, "Cut!" would lead you to a career in video...

So true. My fabricated chance to win a World title!
We did live online scoring along with posted commentary plus pictures of the hole being played for MPO, MPM & FPO semis at PW2001. But no tournament team has yet matched or gone beyond that. "Dots" is a cool step closer. Maybe we'll try again for live commentary at Worlds this year.

I think dots plus the live camera w/ interactive posting would be an amazing step...
and dont we already have dodgeball disc golf... aka... guts and/or dodgebee
