i'm an olympics nut. i wanted to dress up as carl lewis for halloween when i was a little kid but my mother wouldn't let me (i didn't realize painting my face black might offend some people).

i'll be glued to the tv and working from home whenever possible.

is baltimore's michael phelps going to break mark spitz' record?

I am a sports nut in general - I love football, hockey, college basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, world cup and freestyle skiing, etc. and I also get really into the summer & winter Olympics when they come around.

However this year's Olympics has really poor timing as it falls during the combined Pro/Am Worlds in Kalamazoo, MI so I wonder how little coverage I'll actually get to watch. :(

im getting stoked... used to be into running bigtime (middle distance to distance) and have been watching a few of the athletes (Ryan Hall - Olympic Marathon is the main guy i've been keeping tabs on... fastest natural born US marathon runner ever... and it was the first marathon he'd ever ran ... or something like that).

I'll be in Track Town for the final weekend of the trials too... can't wait! Also cant wait to run on 'pre's trail' and check out the memorial and stuff.

but i think im like you guys... and am an olympic nut in general... wife and I have been glued to the tube watching all the trials thus far.

8.8.8 can't come soon enough!!!!

maybe worlds should/could mimick the olympics to a degree since its a 'special occasion' and award medals to the top 3 and actually have a podium style ceremony?!

The competitor's name is being censored because it was added many many years ago to the message board list of automatically censored words. It was added because it was used far, far too often as a personal attack and offensive slur and only very rarely for legitimate uses, such as being someone's last name as per the current example.

I saw this at the politico site:

A wonderful episode in the history of auto-replace software, in which the the website of the American Family Association went to work on a story about the sprinter Tyson [censored] under the headline Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials.

The text:

Tyson Homosexual easily won his semifinal for the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials and seemed to save something for the final later Sunday.

His wind-aided 9.85 seconds was a fairly cut-and-dry performance compared to what happened a day earlier. On Saturday, Homosexual misjudged the finish in his opening heat and had to scramble to finish fourth, then in his quarterfinal a couple of hours later, ran 9.77 to break the American record that had stood since 1999.

Homosexual didnt get off to a particularly strong start in the first semifinal, but by the halfway mark he had established a comfortable lead. He slowed somewhat over the final 10 meters-nothing like the way-too-soon complete shutdown that almost cost him Saturday. Asked how he felt, Homosexual said: A little fatigued.

That's one of the reasons for all these swimming records being broken. Other factors include a deeper pool (10'), two additional outside lanes and special notches in the pool's side walls....all of which result in fewer/smaller waves.

Come on, MTL.....length of the pool doesn't change, but overall pool design has. A 200 meter race in 1972 is the same length as a 200 meter race in 2008.

The following is an excerpt from the Los Angeles Times:

<font color="blue"> The suits are certainly a factor. How much of a factor is a subject of much debate. Speedo's LZR Racer, which was developed in cooperation with NASA and designed to reduce drag, has received considerable attention for its laser-bonded seams and its ability to increase oxygen intake by 5%.

It also compresses a swimmer's body so much, it often takes an athlete 30 minutes or more to put it on -- one inch at a time. Zimbabwe's Kristy Coventry said putting on the suit is so painful on her fingers, she has to put band-aids on them all the time. But she wouldn't dare wear anything else. Why give your competitors an edge?

"I think everyone is wearing the suit now, so we're on kind of a level playing field," said Coventry, who set a world record in the semifinals of the 100-meter backstroke. "Technology in all sports keep advancing, and I think they will as technology grows. I think sports kind of have to keep up with that technology. It's a great suit. I love it."

Of the 36 medals awarded thus far in China, 33 of them have gone to athletes wearing the LZR Racer. Since the suit made its debut in February, it's been used to break 57 world records. (Many, such as Phelps' record in the 400-meter individual medley, have been lowered multiple times.) Most of the swimmers, however, believe it's unfair to simply chalk it up to the suits.

"You can win without a suit or with one," said Aaron Piersol, who switched to Speedo this year after wearing Nike for much of his career. "Hopefully our sport stays that way. Certainly no one wants to lose to a suit. We swim the race against the athletes next to us, not the technology."

The new pools, which are deeper and now feature 10 lanes so the two outside lanes can remain empty, have also played a role because turbulence has been reduced. It's easier to swim fast in smooth water, and waves dissipate quickly into high-tech gutters. The pool in Beijing is also three meters deep, whereas most pools in previous Olympics were only two meters deep. That means a swimmer such as Phelps, who gets a turbo boost off the wall on his turns, can dive deeper and stay under water longer. According to his coach Bob Bowman, that helps him do his dolphin kick for a longer period of time, and helps him go faster.

From Baltimore to Beijing: Odds and ends from Columbia (http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/specialevents/blog/2008_missouri_grand_prix/)

Vendt and Phelps are an interesting yin and yang as training partners. Vendt is a voracious reader, a student of history, an outdoors enthusiast and a political junkie. He and Bowman traded friendly barbs during the build-up to the New Hampshire primary, with Bowman supporting John McCain and Vendt supporting Ron Paul.

"Ron Paul is my guy," said Vendt, who describes himself as a libertarian ideologically. "It's really frustrating the way the mainstream media just ignored him and acted like he was a fringe candidate without doing any research at all. I think he's really what the country needs. ... I'm definitely not a fan of the huge tentacle-like arms of the federal government invading everything in our lives."

Vendt said he's almost been able to convince Phelps to join the Paul Revolution.

"Michael is a big online poker guy, and that's one of Paul's issues, legalizing online gambling," Vendt said.

Vendt says he could see himself possibly getting involved in politics someday.

"People joke around and talk about running for office, and I say 'OK, if you do, I'll run your campaign," Vendt said. "But it's definitely something I'm interested in."
