My family and I are going to Worlds this year. My 8-yr old son has played about 5 events this year and his rounds rate anywhere from 600 to 800. He will be playing in the 8 to 10 yr old division. My questions are: Will he have other competitors in his division? He plays with the 12 and under groups now and usually gets 2nd place. Will there be any supervision for the kids? I am willing to walk the rounds with the kids but I think he would do better without me looking over his shoulder. Any info about the Jr divisions would help.

You are more likely to get competitors in his division if you sign up as soon as possible. Other parents are thinking the same thing.
Larry has a responsible adult, a father of two disc golfing juniors, signed up to be the junior TD. But its not like there will be a TD with every group.
Last year in Milwaukee there were a lot of parents hanging out at the course. Almost every foursome of the smaller kids had a parent walking with them.

My son, defending Jr 10 and under World Champion, 9 year old Nicholas Duran was just signed up last week. They still haven't updated the website yet. I have caddied every tournament round for Nick for the past 2 years, including last years Am Worlds, so I will be walking with and caddying him this year also. As far as you watching over his shoulder, I have found that the kids like parents being there. They actually do better with a parent there, they try to impress you. Mine does anyways. I'm sure Brock Dowell will be coming from Iowa, he's 10 this year. And there are alot of boys in Michigan playing this year. I heard in Bowling Green that Tyler Hamilton will be coming too. He's 10 also. There will be plenty of <10 junior boys for William to play with. I've been watching your boy via tourney results and he's progressing nicely. Hopefully we'll see you there.......Manny
p.s. Hey Bruce, your girls got mad game! Both of them!!!

I am happy to hear that he will have some kids his own age to play rounds with. I will talk it over with William to see if he wants me to caddy for him. He is playing INT Men's in the Riverside Open in about 3 weeks. I can't wait til his rating gets updated.

I looked up some of the ratings of these kids. WOW, They ROCK. Some of these JRs are rated higher then some of the Advanced players I know. I would not want to go up against Wiggins Jr on the disc golf course.

PG,
Not many adults would like to meet David Jr. on the course, except maybe as a doubles partner. It would be awesome for William to play Worlds this year. Believe me it will be something he won't soon forget. He will be saving his money all year long to go again next year. You all will make lifetime friends with both the parents and the kids. I know we have!...............Manny

William signed up yesterday. He is stoked to get to go. What's up with Worlds Doubles? Anyone need a 8 Yr old partner? Don't judge him by his rating. His last couple of events he shot way above his current rating.
mannyd_928
May 29 2008, 09:28 PM
Nick would love to have William as a partner but he's already promised Brock that he would team up with him. They'll be trying to unseat David Jr. and Andrew Coggin, both outstanding players and both World Champions, and defending Jr. Doubles Champions. They've got their work cut out for them! But no worries, there will be other jrs. to team up with. I hear we may have a boy coming all the way from New Zealand to play with the 10 and under group. He's a champion in New Zealand. Exciting!!!

What are the dates of Worlds Doubles? Where are they held? Can we just show up and find a partner? Would William be playing against David Jr and his partner? Or is there different age divisions.
mannyd_928
Jun 03 2008, 08:20 PM
I believe Doubles for the Jr. divisions are on Saturday the 9th, but not entirely sure. Again not sure where they will be held? There should be a list of available players at check in. Last year there were not enough players to have two teams to compete against each other in the 10 and under division so we had to play against the 13 and under division. If there are enough players for a 10 and under division they will have one but if not all the boys will have to play against David and Andrew. Don't fear David and Andrew, they are only human. Besides they are both great boys and if you get the chance to be paired up with them two it will be a great learning experience, for both William and yourself. Both of their parents are awesome nice too! So how old is Korina? How long has she been playing? That is awesome she's signed up.

Korina is 11 and she has been playing a little less then a year. Her brother William showed more interest earlier on and has progressed alot faster. I am just proud that my kids follow the rules, count every stroke and play through the entire round. Even when the weather does not cooperate.

If there is any way you can bring your daughter this year do it.
My son Andrew still talks about courses and people from his two trips to worlds. And he has already started saying I cant wait to see my friends from last year. He ask me almost ever day Whos signed up Now, Is so and so coming?
The best example that I can way I can give is Manny will understand this one the most In Tulsa I meet a man from my on state lives about one hour and half away from me. His name is Rigrock / Minithumber. He Is now one of my best friends. And his lovely daughter cupcake is also a Jr World Champion 16 and under.
And I cant forget about guy from AZ that likes to posts messages on North Carolina Tournaments board.
I still get Pms emails from other.
Our children are the future of our sport.
Come to Worlds and see just how bright the future of DISC GOLF is.

Well spoken Wyatt, Nick has been checking daily to see if his new friends from last year are signed up. Glad you guys are coming. With the outrageous gas prices it will be difficult at best for alot of people to make it. I've been saving up since last year for this trip so we're there for sure. And your right about the BigRock, he's an awesome guy. I wish I lived a bit closer, but we can still be distant buddies. I hope to see Cupcake there, she is an awesome golfer with a very bright future in this sport. 2 more months to go my friend.........Manny

I set up 2 events for Field Day at my kids school yesterday. Putting area with a 10 Meter ring and driving range with 200 foot field to fenceline of the school. Every 3rd, 4th and 5th grader in the school got a chance to throw some putts and then some long distance drives. I gave away a Discraft hat to the kid with the longest drive. Here's the funny part, right as the 2 kids with the longest drives were doing their final throws my 2nd grade son William showed up during his recess. Both 5th graders threw drives about 5 to 10 feet from the fence. William stepped up and just bombed one over the fence and across the street and into a front yard. The 5th grade boys wanted discs and not a hat so I gave them some drivers and putters and William got the hat.

Sweet! Can't wait to meet the little bomber. Have you decided on caddying for him for Worlds? Or will you be caddying for Korina? It should be a real blast, either way. What does William throw for his primary driver? Mid? Putter? How about Korina? Nick only throws Innova discs since being signed to the Innova scout team last year. He throws a Champion Wraith a mile, uses an old beat up X-out Champion spider for his midrange, and a Champion KC Aviar signed by the champ himself, for his putter. As well as other discs but those are his main discs. Hopefully there will be other girls for Korina to play with, if not they will still put her to play with the older girls. But I think if no-one else signs up for her division she automatically becomes World Champion, as long as she finishes all of her rounds, of course. Even that would be awesome!
pgcarlos
Jun 08 2008, 07:05 PM
Now I almost feel bad about it but I talked with William and he gave me the OK to actually play. Anyway, Williams driver of choice is a 150 DX Destroyer, Mid is a 160 DX Gazelle and he putts with a Omega Supersoft. He throws forehand for distance and backhand for accuracy. Both ways for Mid range depending on pin placement and doglegs.

I think it will be kinda tough for you guys cause even I have to rent another car while I'm there in K-zoo just to be able to get my other Jr.<16 around. They will be playing on 2 different courses at the same time or at alternate times. It may conflict with having William on one course, your wife on another, and you at still another. There isn't really transportation for the jrs. between two courses, or at least there wasn't last year. Something to consider. And really there wasn't chaperones, there was the actual parents of the boys walking with their own children. Also something to consider. You and your wife may be playing in K-zoo at 8:00 a.m. and Korina and William may be playing in Battle Creek at 9:00 am. You'll be starting at different times and also ending at different times. And you or they may be playing more than one round per day. Just a heads up.

That could be a huge problem. My wife seemed to think that she could request for the kids be in the same pools as the Advanced Women. She sent in some info to the TD about it. Not set in stone at this point. I was assuming the hotel would have a shuttle of some kind. We will have a rental car and I figured if we needed to split up I would end up on a shuttle. If things don't work out I will just caddy for William and Korina will caddy for Martha.

I have a general scheduling question regarding Juniors. Everyone has been set up to play one round on three days and two rounds on two days. Would it be better for Juniors if we did three days with two rounds, one day with one round and one day with no rounds. We would also try to get the Juniors on the same course/location on the days they play two rounds.
mannyd_928
Jun 11 2008, 12:28 PM
My concern Chuck is not so much that they play a set number of rounds per day as opposed to having ALL the Jr. divisions playing at the same courses at the same time. My 16 year old will have to play at different courses and at different times that my 9 year old will. So we will not only have to rent a vehicle to get from Az. to Michigan but we will also have to rent another vehicle while in Michigan just to be able to transport my 16 year old to different courses. With all the other expenses that we're already incurring, that extra expense is going to be rough. Cause we'll have to have the extra vehicle for a whole week.

Last year I was also able to watch my 16 year old at times while I was caddying my 9 year old. My wife could even get pictures of both of them. Now she will be at a whole other course and I won't get to see my 16 year old at all. And she'll only be able to get pictures of him and not my 9 year old.

Based on prior Worlds, there's a significant difference in skill and participation levels of boys in the <19 and <16 categories versus the six other junior divisions and they have been treated differently in terms of courses played when possible. The <16 winner even 5 years ago could have finished in the top 5 in Advanced. One thing we may try to do in future schedule updates before Worlds is get more divisions playing the same course twice in a day to help some players reduce gas cost. Remember that for divisions like Adv Masters that show two pools, if registration doesn't justify the additional pool, there will be further consolidation of the schedule that may affect some other division schedules, too.

Just hang out and chill for the next 7 weeks, because you have until AUG 1 to withdraw and still get a FULL refund, and they will have the final "draft" schedule out right before then, which should be pretty close to the final schedule, barring massive withdrawls.
If you've already paid, relax and just check the schedule out at the end of July and adjust accordingly.
I still get a kick out of seeing these same conversations every year before worlds, especially from people who have been to worlds in the past.
I't's pretty much been exactly the same since 1997 except for pool seedings, and for the last 2 years no waitlist, just open registration after a certain date. the rest of the stuff has not changed.

My daughter won't be playing this year at Worlds. She's only 5, and as it stands now it wouldn't work out. Remember my other son is playing on different courses and mom will be shuttling him around, and I caddy for Nick, which would leave my daughter alone. I was referring to Keith Johnsons daughter, she's around 10 or 11 now, isn't she Keith? Maybe next year for my daughter, she does have a pretty mean lefty roller!!! Why doesn't mom caddy for Korina? Is she stuck like all the rest of us? LOL...By the way, did you notice we have another jr. 10 and under signed up? Pretty low PDGA number for not having played any tourneys. Any idea why Chuck? Maybe a clerical error?

Mannyd: International juniors have the lower international numbers.
Chuck: If that comment was including me, Wisconsin just happened to work out with the juniors. And at Iowa we had extra non-playing parents involved.
I don't think there is anything you can do to accomodate the playing parents of playing juniors. Parents just have to make a decision about who comes first. I agree with whoever that it should be the kids.
Kira is getting to the point where she no longer regards a junior girl title as a legit title. She's won in Advanced Women, taken prizes in Am4, and really would rather have the opportunity to play with different people for some of the rounds. So our decision works for everyone here.

I think it is probably the case that either the cost or the involved liability is prohibitive, but has the PDGA ever looked into having some kind of bus service at Worlds? It would especially help for the juniors, but as gas goes up it seems like more and more people might be willing to fork up an extra, say $10-15 for a bus pass. Then you could just have a bus or tram for each pool that would depart from the host location each morning, provide transportation to that pool for both rounds, and then get them back to the host hotel each evening...
I don't know what all would be involved, but it seems like at the very least someone should take a look at something like that for the future.
cgkdisc
Jun 13 2008, 12:34 PM
We tried at Highbridge last year but couldn't get people to sign up in advance and not enough ended up wanting to use it. It was chicken or the egg situation because having the bus follow a schedule was a fixed cost and the cost to charge per person to just break even couldn't be set properly without knowing approximately how many would use it and then ACTUALLY use it. The price could have been $5 per 20 minute ride or $30 per ride which no one would pay.
mannyd_928
Jun 13 2008, 01:28 PM
I would just as soon stick to this format for the juniors also. I think it gives the players more of a chance to stay evenly rounded out. If one player does badly on one course, they can always pick it up on the next. Makes sense on the PDGA numbers. I just saw that he had a number close to Nicks and had never played a tourney

We've learned over the years on average that Ams and Pro approach the course format for Worlds differently. In general, Ams are OK and many prefer playing more different courses even if only once. Pros on the other hand lean toward playing fewer courses and playing each one at least twice so they get a second chance at each one. In addition, fewer courses means less time tied up in practice which can save one days' travel expenses.
mannyd_928
Jun 13 2008, 08:47 PM
I can understand that concept or way of thinking. I don't think juniors are too concerned with travel expenses. If I were playing, I would just as soon play different courses also, just to be able to say I played them. That's just me though. And I'm far from being a pro. 5 different courses for the juniors to play would be appropriate. Last year they only played 4.
cgkdisc
Jun 13 2008, 08:59 PM
The thing is, that anyone can play all of the courses if they wish to check them out. It's just that when playing for money, you want to be able to spend an appropriate amount of time practicing the courses you'll play if your time is limited which it may be for those having to use vacation time.
bruce_brakel
Jun 13 2008, 10:22 PM
Players at different levels want something different out of Worlds. It is not just a pro-am thing. At both levels some want a destination disc golf vacation and some want a serious tournament. I might play pro worlds in 2010 if it is at Lemon Lake. I'll just be looking for a week off from work and a chance to take my best shot at cashing!
I think the best a TD can do at these events is to publish a plan early and stick with it in principle. If you have to tweak it for two pools or one pool of Am Masters, whatever. But if the plan is everyone plays three courses twice and people are sending their money in for that plan, you can't change it to everyone plays six courses once.

Jun 13 2008, 10:29 PM
Agreed. The number of courses for pros (4) and ams (5) hasn't changed, just the courses and mix as needed.

We played Lemon Lake last year after Worlds. I was completely impressed at how well the courses looked. They obviously put alot of time and effort into the design and maintenance. From what I understand, they've added a new course to the park since last year. Amazing.
We are sorta on a time crunch so we won't be able to stick around or even show up early to practice all the courses. Most we will play blind and just hope for the best. School actually starts here the day that Worlds starts, so my boys will already miss a whole week of school. We'll have to make a marathon drive home so they don't miss any more than necessary. I'm hoping the next Worlds can start in July when few if any schools will be in session.

I would like to see everyone get a chance to play. But, I'll sit this one out cause I don't have a snowballs chance in hell of making the cut. My wife has put in so much effort this year she is not going to quit now. My son has a good shot but my daughter is not that hooked on DG. Just look at her ratings compared to williams he's almost 4 yrs younger and has double her rating(and rising fast).

I am not sure if my daugher (Nicole) is going to World's this year. She wants to go, but her school starts the same week that World's starts. I think I will have a problem convincing my wife to let Nicole miss the first week of school to go play disc golf (my wife does not play disc golf or any other sport). Also, as of today, there is only one jurior girl signed up to play. With sure a small field, it is even harder to justify missing school to play.
I will probably keep an eye on the registration list to see if more junior girls sign up. If more girls signup, I might have a slightly better chance of convincing my wife to let Nicole play. Since Nicole is 12 years old, she can play in any of the girl's jurior division U13, U16, or U19.
Thanks.............Rick

Hey Rick,
I think if you put her in maybe other parents would follow suit and sign up their daughters as well. I remember Nicole from last year, she's an awesome golfer. She should be there! Such a small field is all the more reason to take her. Better chances for a Championship! Great experience too!

I agree. Nicole is what the world championship is about. I had the pleasure of watcher her during the skill shoot change at 07 worlds. She not just a good Disc Golfer. She is outstanding. The compotators of the 08 Jr World Championship deserves to and expects to play the best Jrs in the world. That is why Nicole need to play.

Hey Patrick,
WOW what a ratings jump! That's awesome. I can't wait to meet the "Little Bomber". He is progressing very nicely. Tell him congrats and to keep it up. Alot of good ratings changes. Andrew, will be in the 1000s before you know it. Little David is steadily rising, Brock with a huge jump. These Young Guns can without a doubt stomp me! The youth of Disc Golf are taking over!!!

Thanks Manny, I will pass on to Andrew. You may want to send BigRock a confidence building PM hes upset that Andrews player rating is higher than his. And tell Nick just because his rating is higher than mine dont mean he can win this years putting contest.

I just looked at the ratings and william jumped up to a 644 rating up102 pts. We just played the Ft Steilicoom Open and he shot a 689 and 732; 2 rounds 27 holes a round. Kind of long rounds for a his age but he's a trooper. On a side note, this was the first time everyone in my family placed. Korina(daughter) got 1st in Jr girls, William(son)2nd Jr boys and Martha(wife) got 2nd Adv womens and I got 3rd Int Men. That's my best finish in an A tier event.

Sweet! It's a family affair. Glad to see you all are doing well. Great ratings for Korina also in that tourney. Kinda exciting when you have a big jump in ratings like that. Nick had a 103 point jump last year, and has steadily climbed higher. One bad tourney in there slowed him up a little but no biggie. One more month to go for Worlds!!! Getting Antsy!

Hey Patrick, I'm sure you'll find someone for William to play with. At check-in there will be a list of players wanting to play who don't have partners yet. You can put him on the list or find someone on the list then.

Hey Manny, No, I won't be going to worlds this year. Not only is my game at its lowest point ever, I just don't do well in August heat back East. I am going to Womens Nationals in Huntsville in September though and really looking forward to that and hoping it won't be as hot and humid as July/August. But I'll be keeping an eye on your boy so I hope he does well. :D
So Cal Champs - you guys can stay w/me again if you like, or any other time for that matter.
Have a happy 4th!!

Another <10 junior boy signed up. Already one more than last year and still not a few that I was expecting. Could be a good field this year. By the way, Nick just got his first intermediate win. Only two tourneys after his first intermediate cash. Great big accomplishment for a 9 year old!

William just played the Nuclear meltdown and shot 2 rounds with over 800 ratings. That is his home course, and he had been practicing all week to get ready for it.

Nice! Are you guys driving to Michigan or flying? If your driving, what are your intended stop overs for the night? How many days for you guys? 3, 9 hour days of driving for us. We'll be stopping over in Kansas City Mo. for the night and playing William Yates Jr. disc golf course with some junior locals and Swopes DGC. How about a little warm up match? Let me know......Manny

I was hoping so. Been talking to BagRock, I mean BigRock for months now, trying to get him to let her go. I think I finally broke him down. Now all we need is for other girls to sign up in her division. I can think of several who would fit the bill. Either way, we'll need to keep all the skirt chasin' boys away! That'll be a task for sure!

Know what you mean, cant wait to see all you guys. And there is a new team Japan. Just wish both boys where U-13. Andrew and David had a great time playing doubles against them last year made it feel like the world came to worlds.
Are you kidding about BigRock, Do you have any idea how much it would cost me to ship him to Kalamazoo?????? Hes a BIG BOY!!!!!!

Hey Wyatt,
I have no idea what tee's the boys will be playing from. The shorts I would imagine. We're just having to play in the blind I guess. And I do know what it's like to have a little one ready to go play. Nick took off walking three days ago, heading to Michigan. He couldn't wait anymore. We'll pick him up along the way somewhere, if he isn't there already! LOL! Four more days, and we're off on our adventure to Michiganland! See you when you get there. Oh! and by the way. If your flying on U.S. Airways, it's only $15 for an extra bag... Now to find a bag big enough to fit BagRock in???....Hmmmm?
