As upset as I was for dropping a bit (should get 1 of the 2 pts back once the results get fixed) I am pretty happy because I realized that this next update I am almost guaranteed to make a big jump. I just used those rounds up until 10 days before the next update and they didn't even average 990 adn only 1 out of four was over 1000. So the moral of the story is that it is good to play like crap for a bit because it will come back to help you out the next year when they drop.

How did that work? I see he was 1000+ for almost five years (2000-2004), presumably based off the same four rounds of golf... in 2005 he went to 910 based on nine rounds, and in play from 2005-2008 never went above a 918...

Does anyone know the story? Did he just play lights-out in his first ever tournament and then get injured and quit playing for years OR was that first tournament somehow misreported and he got a much higher rating than he deserved?

mbohn
May 19 2008, 07:16 PM
The story goes, Podman had no idea how it happened. We had alot of great laughs over it! We used to say stuff like " watch out! it's the highest rated Am in the world! He would always look at you and say something like, I don't what happened, but they messed up my rating somehow..... I'm no 1000 rated player.... It was fun while it lasted...

A TON of work has gone into my game this season. This will without a doubt be my last season playing AM3. Qualifying for Am Nats last weekend & not finishing DFL finally convinced me I am a little better than I've given myself credit for.

sure... open excel and start a new spreadsheet

copy your ratings history and paste it into a spreadsheet ;)
(may have to do 'paste special as txt')

then cut out all rounds over a year from the last rated round that will go in this most recent update...

add those rounds that will be in this update

double weight the most recent 25% of rounds and average

Viola!

(ok... theres a little more to it than that w/ rounding up/etc but thats the gist of it from what I understand)

I'll maybe go up, but it's hard to say, a lot of the tournaments I've played recently don't show the option to see round ratings anymore. Is there something I'm missing. It seems that after the results become official you're not allowed to see ratings until the next ratings update. Well lets just assume that I was predicting yours too, it makes me look a little more right. :) Haha

Am I the only person that keeps an excel file with multiple sheets? For example:
1. A sheet with my actual up-to-date rating over the past year to the most recent event. (965)
2. A sheet with all rounds that will drop next rating already off so I can see my current projection for the next update. (967)
3. A sheet with some "what-ifs" like, "what if" I play 985 rated golf every round for the rest of this ratings period. (973... pipe dream! ha)

and then various sheets with up to date ratings for friends that are curious about their ratings. :P

I know it's a major, but why would the Japan Open be allowed into the update, when all others get cut off at a certain date. Doesn't this create in effect, an improper rating for those players, since it's adding a tournament that is weeks ahead of others? Not that it's that big a deal, but it just seems like the cutoff date should be firm, that way everyone is on a level playing field.

Not really a criticism, just an observation.

Hey Chuck Any idea why my son and I did not get included in the update?
#26175 and #26176

cgkdisc
Jun 23 2008, 11:06 AM
It's a judgment call certainly but in the case of the JO and Am Nats, the PDGA is more directly involved with these Championships, plus these events in particular are easy to process with a single course layout and only one or two divisions. If it was Am or Pro Worlds at the cutoff, it wouldn't happen with all of the pools and divisions to process. Every event the previous weekend had the opportunity to be processed if they got their report in by Tuesday, June 10, so we're only talking about two events that were a week later.

cgkdisc
Jun 23 2008, 11:07 AM

We go back 12 months from each individual's most recently rated round. The update date means nothing in terms of changing your rating if you don't have any new rounds to process.

mbohn
Jun 23 2008, 11:12 AM
Thanks Chuck. I would think that after four years of this I would finally get it. I think I am almost there!

I looked at your rating 10 minutes ago Mitch, and you were almost there 5 years ago! I feel for ya, but it sounds like you'll get there next tournament, and if you get injured, DNF!

You'll be there. You got it and you play consistent.

Yeah yeah, Mitch Sonderfan ratings curve...start off 890, 1 yr later 980...6 years later...999. Someday I'll learn how to play this silly game. And Matt, you can now call me XterraMitch.

LOL. I've been there, it's not all that it's cut out to be. :DI do know how hard it is to perform when injured. Had a little groin problem that gave me fits for 16 months! Had to STOP golfing all together to let it heal. Now the rounds included in my rating is down to just 10 rounds. That means everything is HEAVILY weighed. One bad round and i could become an Advanced player again. :D

Ha, then I suggest you have nothing but good rounds! True, I got an A-Tier to my name...maybe I'll nab CO states this year. It was good to see Mike Hofmann nab an A earlier this year as wel!

Well I was right, up 7 points to a 921. Now if I can quit throwing 960 rounds spiced with 883 rounds I'd be in good shape! :D

Well, down 9.

Thats what happens when you play the WORST GOLF OF YOUR LIFE FOR 4 MONTHS STRAIGHT

Not really a criticism, just an observation.

i was curious about this at first myself but came to the conclusion that majors should be in/updated almost ASAP in order to give the best/most current ratings for the 'top of the sport'

i know this is far fetched but i think that the lower player should have their rating updated more becuase (rec intermideate) because you could have a rec player that is rated at is rated at 890 but the last 4 rounds the person played were over 925 so now the guy is playing at an interm. level but is still playing in a rec division becuase of his rating

i know the player should move up but if your playing by ratings then they are going to stay in rec until the ratings are changed

I don't disagree but the process to do just some new players requires the whole ratings process to be done anyway. That's why players who have what they think is too high a rating after just 2 rounds can request a waiver from Dave Gentry to play down.

I guess I don't have a problem with players who may have too low of a rating off the bat being able to "bag" for a few months until the next update. I don't see why players shouldn't be allowed to remain the same division for a competition year. It's not like a great HS player like Lebron was forced to play on a college team during the middle of the season. But I'm strictly talking about a local series. On a national level, you have to go with ratings when players travel even if the data is still new with few rounds to keep it as fair as possible under the circumstances.

Wow. 895. A 20 point drop. I gotta quit playing tourneys in BFE Missouri.

Yeah, it's sort of like playing in metropolitan Arkansas, isn't it? :)

While Arkansas is what it is, I have never seen a naked, drunk guy in the parking lot of an Arkansas or Oklahoma disc golf tournament (not to say it has never happened) just letting it all hang loose. I also have never had to ask a crack-head if I could retrieve my disc out of her back yard in Arkansas turning into a half-hour explanation of why she was too high to even comprehend what I was talking about.
