One season after senior Aaron Gray went in the second round, Young, who turns 23 in June, is listed as a late first-round pick on some mock NBA drafts.

If Young comes back, Pitt will return three-fifths of its starting lineup, along with top reserves Tyrell Biggs and Gilbert Brown. All three starters -- junior point guard Levance Fields, freshman center DeJuan Blair and Young - rank among the best in the Big East at their respective positions.

"Three potential starters coming back, and we're pretty much our nucleus," Fields said after the loss to Michigan State. "We're going to work hard this summer and learn from this and get better and, hopefully, stay injury-free next year, and we should be fine."

As for Fields' best friend, Cook, he plans to pursue another year. Cook, who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 11th game of the season, will have to petition the NCAA, citing special circumstances. Approvals are generally rare, though Pitt guard Mallorie Winn did receive a sixth year last March 29.

"This is really the first time I've ever been involved with something like this," Dixon said. "We will gather all of the info. Mike would have to be the one that (pursues) it."

Replacing Ramon and Benjamin is the next chore. Redshirt freshman Gilbert Brown, who started 15 games this season, will likely move into the full-time role to replace Benjamin at small forward.

That will leave Brad Wanamaker, who averaged 2.3 points in 30 games, and incoming freshman Nasir Robinson of PIAA Class AAAA champion Chester as likely candidates to replace Ramon at shooting guard.

Joining Robinson in next year's freshman class are two point guards: Travon Woodall of USA Today No. 1 St. Anthony (31-0) and Ashton Gibbs of Seton Hall (N.J.) Prep; and 6-foot-8 power forward Dwight Miller from Houston St. Pius X.

Another guard, Jermaine Dixon, the younger brother of Pistons guard Juan Dixon, plans to transfer to Pitt from Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College.
