That was informative and answers a lot of questions...what can people do to help if they have a schedule that makes it impossible to attend?

thanks J Gary.
Josh, I'd say let J Gary or someone you know will be at the meeting know your opinions/concerns with the topics listed. I'm sure other things will come up at the meeting, like our points series, and thats unfortunately unavoidable, but at least what is listed can have some of your weight added. As an involved person in these parts, your input certainly would count. Also, if you have anything additional for discussion, I'd let that be known as well.

Stella....
How about this. Win the monthly (given). Go to the bowl, while there throw your weight around-then throw my weight around and once you sift your way through the barney let me know what was said, how many cold ones you threw back and how many heads you crack.

PFDS Board Meeting convened at 2 p.m. Saturday Feb. 23, 2008 at Deer Lakes Bowl.
Current board members KB Clark (president), J. Gary Dropcho (course superintendent), Jerry Gotcher (at large board member) and Scott McIntyre (secretary) were present and constituted a quorum. A PFDS lifetime member and other interested people were also in attendance.
Dave Olcott and Scott Heintzleman were nominated and voted in as communications director and at-large board member respectively, to fill seats vacated by Greg Meitus and Jeremiah Libby.
 J. Gary, Scott H, Dave O. and Dave Kuhrt will meet with Pittsburgh Cititparks Director Duane Ashley on Wednesday, Feb 27 to discuss the pressing need for renovations at the Schenley Park Disc Golf Course. The committee hopes to gain the support of the city to replace the baskets with the offer of PFDS paying for the replacement of all of the tee signs. The goal is to upgrade and renovate in time for a 20th anniversary tournament Oct. 12, 2008.
Scott H reported that the Schenley Wednesday Handicapped League will begin again mid-April and is considering using rounds from the Blue tees once a month. Scott deposited $1600 into the club's account from 2006-07 Schenley League. $1 from each league round entry fee is earmarked for the course fund to be used for maintenance and improvements to the course.
Kurt Poole, Assistant Tournament Director of the PA State Disc Golf Championships, spoke about this year's championships May 3-4 at Indiana, PA. The board approved a club sponsorship of $100 to the PA State Disc Golf Championship. The sponsorship allows PFDS to select 10 players to represent the club at the Championships, and voted to allocate 5 spots for Open players, 4 spots for Advanced players and 1 spot for a Woman player. If no woman player is put on the roster, an additional spot will be made for an advanced player.
After discussion about the method used to determine PFDS's club sponsored players, the board decided to require that all sponsored players must be current members of both the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society (PFDS) and the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). Current PDGA player ratings will be using to determine the Open, Advanced and Woman player. Participation in PFDS monthly tournaments and results from 07 PA States could be used as determining factors after player rating is concerned.
Josh Charlton volunteered to head the effort to collect registration forms and entry fees from the selected club players by March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) and send the PFDS bundle to the PA States Tournament Director before the March 28 deadline.
Discussion about increasing the membership of the club resulted in a decision to begin, as of April 1, charging a $1 fee for non-PFDS members to play in any of the monthly tournaments at Knob Hill, Moraine or Deer Lakes parks. This fee will not be in effect for the weekly Schenley League. The $1 fee can be credited toward a $10 annual membership, but membership privileges such as a 10% discount on club merchandise, a club mini, and embroidered hat for Lifetime members are not in effect until membership is paid in full. The consensus was that the fees will either prompt players who are not members to ante up, or pay for their opportunity to play competitive formats at club sponsored courses.
The board also requested the assistance of Membership Director Michael Hoeg to provide current membership lists and membership enrollment forms to all of the monthly tournament directors (Sid Olcott, Jerry Gotcher, Scott McIntyre) to aid in the membership drive. The board expressed the need for some kind of permanent marker be given to all current members, such as a bag patch for Lifetime Members or bag tag for Annual members, that will clearly identify them as "in the club" for the benefit of determining discounts on club merchandise and monthly tournament entry fees. The membership director was charged with making a recommendation for such club icons to be implemented by April 1.
The board approved Ironwood Open Tournament Director Sid Olcott's request for the approximately $1300 expenditure to purchase custom hotstamped discs for the player and prize packages.
The board approved J. Gary's request for a $500 expenditure to pay for sanctioning fee, pavilion rental, and printing costs associated with the June 28-29 Scholl's Bicycle Center Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open.
J. Gary and Dave O. are tournament co-directors and reported that 60 full-color fundraiser discs previously approved by the board have been ordered and should arrive around mid April. Sale of the discs should generate $600 for the tournament. J. Gary reported that over $2100 has already been secured in sponsorships for the tournament: $1500+ from title sponsor Scholl's, $300 from Comfort Inn Cranberry ($200 from Comfort Inn also going to Ironwood Open), $300 from Dick's Sporting Goods, and $500 from Dunham's Sports (via Innova's advertising budget) to pay for the Player Picnic at the end of the tournament.
J. Gary announced a goal of adding $5000 to the pro purse at this year's 20th edition of the PFDO, and the board approved the 3-year tee sign sponsorships for as many as 7 of the holes at Moraine State Park course going toward the PFDO. The metal tee sign poles and frames donated by J. Gary/Grip It and Rip It in 2005 generated sign sponsorships for the PFDO purse the past three years.
Jerry Gotcher announced that 2008 Course Championship tournaments would be held at Moraine, Knob Hill and Deer Lakes to benefit the Ironwood Open, SBCPFDO and The Hunt respectively.
The board voted to accept Lifetime Member Chris Deitzel's offer to pay for the cost of producing a run of 50-100 DX Aviars with a hotstamp commemorating the 20th year of the PFDO with a design incorporating the names of all the Open division winners since the tournament began in 1984. Chris committed to donating 100% of the profit of the sale of the discs to the PFDO purse, somewhere between $300 and $600.
The board approved the loan of the club's 6 portable Traveler Baskets to Lifetime Member John Ebel for use at a May 31 charity fundraising tournament at an assisted living home in Mt. Lebanon called Asbury Heights. Jon also requested volunteers to assist in running the event.
 Meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.

Schenley Park course promoter Scott Heintzleman and PFDS course superintendent J. Gary Dropcho met with Pittsburgh Parks and Recreation Director Duane Ashley on 2/27/08 with a partnership proposal to renovate the 20 year-old Schenley Links.
The meeting was a huge success, with Mr. Ashley agreeing on the spot to fund the purchase of replacing all the baskets on the course, repairing broken tee pads, and proposing the installation of a synthetic turf product on some of the tee pads as a demonstration project.
PFDS pledged its volunteers to install the new equipment and to fund, produce and install new signs on the Red and White tees.
It looks pretty certain that these improvements will be made in the Spring and Summer of 2008. Get ready PFDS members -- you will be called to action soon to contribute to the life of one of the region's oldest and most popular courses in Schenley Park.
That's great news.
I'll lend a hand.
I like that old course.

We will use the original anchors, replace the damaged ones and perhaps add a third position for each hole.

I was under the impression that a complete re-design of the course was being pitched.
While the new course improvements will still be a welcome addition, beveled-edge discs and increased distance technology made the existing layout obsolete and a safety hazard more than a decade ago.

I agree with the safety of some holes being an issue, and the idea of alternate pin positions would be a bonus. You could go C-pin over the mound on 1, across the street and right on 2, hillside on 3?, hillside on 4?, 5,6,7,8,9,10??? You could go long and left straight or right on 11 for sure, 12?? 13 could go left and 20 feet longer,14, 15 could go a touch longer and left?, 16 ?? 17 could go longer and up to the left on hillside and be a much tougher hole and 18? tucked further left? Some holes with C's would be much tougher and add a lot of risk and reward that Schenley lacks especially when compared to Deer, Knob or Moraine layouts. The complete overhaul is something Dave OOOO has been kicking around, but it is for a new course elsewhere at Schenley I think. New baskets and signs are much much needed, I think Schenley is the most played course in the area and gets a lot of abuse.

I was told Saturday @ Knob (PROPS TO THE 6 SOLDIERS WHO CAME OUT TO PLAY!) by Scott H. that the PFDS will have to plant new anchors @ Schenley because the polehole piping is different in size between the old baskets and the new Mach III's...
If changes are going to be made I feel right now is the time. We have to plant holes regardless. Just my $.02
BTW, in case anyone has forgotten, we have tees to go in at Deer Lakes. Hope everyone is ready to work this summer! :D:mad:  :D

anywho, once again I want to thank Scott and J Gary for convincing people in position/power to do things for the good of our community. We as dg'ers may look at this as an improvement to a local course that desperately needed it... it's also good to look at this upgrade as improvements being made to help revive parks and activites that all can enjoy in our immediate area.

So in the area....we have work to be done at Schenley, teepads to install at Deer Lakes? Stella are you talking cement, is that for all tees? Is Moraine up for something as well?
jmc2442
Mar 04 2008, 03:59 PM
yes, Stella is talking concrete for the DLDGC. The County included concrete in its costs/grant so three concrete pads will be installed at every hole. We are hoping for a middle spring start. Hoping. Nothing is too sure as of yet, though.

your assumptions would be correct, that is the plan. Dan, J Gary, and myself are going to head up talks with the Parks group soon to see how we can coordinate leveling, backfilling, etc. of teeboxes with as much machine power and little back power as possible...
All teeboxes except #3 on the front are accessible from a road with equipment... back is a little trickier with 13, 14, and 15 being hard to get to.

When storms damaged a couple of baskets last summer, the club saw the need to speak with Citiparks about replacing the targets....not only the damaged ones, but all of them. It was during these initial discussions that a small number of members suggested relocating the course to another area of Schenely Park. It is my understanding the relocation idea was never pitched to the city.
The re-design idea is a different ball of wax altogether. I'm not sure how the locals, especially the old-schoolers like Red, J Gary, Steve, KB, etc., feel about redesigning their oldest existing Pittsburgh course. I agree with you, Jeff, that the course is sorely outdated and could use a design overhaul (particularly in regard safety). On the other hand, Schenley is the most played course in the area and that speaks volumes in itself. Granted, you see a large number of casuals throwing lids, but they're out there in droves.
If there is any type of redesign or modification, I hope Steve Kohman is involved to a certain degree. Steve designed the original course 20 years ago and is a long-time resident of Pittsburgh and member of the PFDS. Unfortunately, we don't see Mr. Kohman much nowadays because of injury and his growing obsession with ball golf! Nonetheless, I think it'd be great to have Steve step back into the fold to once again make his mark in the Steel City.

Please note the PFDS Event Calendar has been revised. The Deer Lakes Course Championship has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 16 (rain date = Sunday, August 17). The reason for the change is the Mid-Atlantic Amateur Championship is scheduled for July 26-27. This top-notch amateur event will be contested at the beautiful and challenging Seneca Creek State Park, an awesome 27-hole course in Gaithersburg, MD (approx 4+ hours from Pittsburgh). I hope several of the amateur players from western PA will attend this event.....Seneca Creek is one of the nicest disc golf courses in the country!

The Event Calendar is up and running. Had to nuke the old one, as it was installed by hand by Larry, and our service provider scoffed at the idea of support. There's a new one up, which will be easier for me to maintain. It's got a lot of features. learn them. love them. As some of you may have read on here, there is a Pittsburgh discussion board on the site. The post to this board was accidental. The board that's on the PFDS site is intended for board members, and other members of the club who run events. Popping in to tell everyone that you got an ace on #1 from short tees at monroeville isn't gonna make the grade. It's an administrative discussion board. I wish I could make it as public as this one, but I don't have time to moderate it, while maintaining the rest of the site. Sorry :( I'll be installing a photo gallery on the site in the near future. anyone wanna pony-up the loot for the awesome picture of Alanna (the one where she looks like she's getting ready to backhand Kurt for givin her lip? also, what she looks like when a TD is trying to convince her not to change divisions...hehe) I'm afraid that won't be public access either. No one wants to search for disc golf related pictures, only to have to scroll through pics of Josh C's toy pony collection. The site is a tool for the club. If you want to see anything up there, send me an email. One of the things we'll be doing in the near future is enabling an online voting system. The club will be much more democratic if the club members can actually vote on the issues at hand.

PFDS ELECTIONS
On Wednesday, October 15th, the board of directors of the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society met at the Comfort Inn, in Cranberry. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and revise the job descriptions for the board members themselves. The board also accepted the official resignation of Mike Hoeg as Director of Memberships. The board would like to thank Mike for the service he provided and we hope that his new schedule will allow him at least a little time for golf and the occasional visit :)
During the course of the meeting, PFDS President K.B. Clark called for a club election. The motion was seconded and the vote in favor was unanimous. Therefore, as Director of Communications, I would like to announce elections for the 2009-2010 seasons.
Pittsburgh has a reputation of excellence in the disc golf community. That reputation was built through the work of the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society. If you feel you have something to contribute to the club and its future, please consider running for office.

OK, I'll throw my hat in the ring for this one. I would like to expand the clubs interests in Beaver County and beyond. I have several ideas on how to promote disc golf in this area, gain sponsorship and perhaps host several fund raising shoots. I would also like to expand our web presence by encouraging other networking opportunities to promote our courses and events. I would also like to start relationships with several of the areas schools in order to field new participants for the scholastic events. I'm also interested in seeing more new media relationships develop so that our events are broadcasted to a more expanded audience.
Other than that, I want to make sure we have THE BEST possible trophies for the Open winners in our premier events. I also want to be kept in the loop on the process of tournament logo selection. I think we have some work to do in that department to make sure we have the absolute BEST look to our productions.
I will also make myself available for TD to allow folks who haven't been able to play in the PFDO to do it.

Guess you never got my letter to run??? Sent it twice. never heard a reply from anyone?
Oh well/
also, who is a member of the club? Do we not have that information available to us? I know that Lori and Gibby were both signed up this year, but never have had any confirmation of them signing up and they never receievd anything for signing up?
What are we to do about that. They both got 1 year memberships for me buying 2 schenley baskets....but I feel they really have not gotten what they deserve.
WE REALLY NEED A LIST OF MEMBERS ASAP!!!! And the ones who have signed up and have not been included, should at the very least be recognized as PFDS members.
ESPECIALLY if we are voting on NEW OFFICIALS. And what about the Lifetime members that do not use our website or the message board? Has someone called those people to tell them that there is an election?? I think if we are going to have an election, then all of the members should be contacted before doing so.
OK enough from me. I'm just sick of not knowing who our members are.
So whoever becomes director of communications needs to be able to Call, email, send letters to members of the club. And keep ALL of the members up-to-date on large issues facing the club.
But most importantly, we need to KNOW who our members are. You've got people like Chuck, Carl, Follin, Nordheimer, and others that I am sure do not know that this election is even happening.....
AND I AGREE WITH JEFF THAT JERRY SHOULD BE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO JON EBEL IS???? AND I HAVE BEEN PLAYING DISC GOLF IN PITTSBURGH FOR OVER 14 YEARS?

I feel you pain Chris. All your points are reasons why I put my name in for the Membership Director position.
Once we have our new board meeting in December I'll start compiling a list of members. Plus, I'm going to see if the board will supply bag tags to all members so we can identify them as members.
I also would like to see members that join last year and never received anything, like Lori, Gibby, and J Thompson, to get a reduced rate for 2009.

Sounds good to me!!! It just feels more of a clique then a club right now. I know we have lots of members, but I can only name a handful of them. And of those, I have no idea who is lifetime.

The tags will reflet whether a member is yearly or lifetime. IE. - Gold tags for Lifetime and Black tags for yearly.
No one should complain about the black and gold color choices.
These tags can replace the mini that members would recieve. I think I have at least 75 minis at home, I don't need another.
Other ideas I have will be discussed at the December meeting.

Hi everyone,
I am filling in for membership director until the elections. It took some time to gather the information that we needed . I have the info now and will list the current (vote eligible) members. If your name is not on the list and should be, please let me know. If you don't see someone that you know should be on there, please let me know.
Any letters of nominations that the club received was posted. I can't say why the club would not have received two letters if they were sent. Maybe check your email address that you sent them to.
I will have a list of members, ballots, and renewal forms with me and will also send out ballots and renewal forms via email to the current members that I have addresses for.

The Board will meet for the first time this weekend during our winter retreat, which begins at 7 pm on Friday 12/12 at North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock. Anyone is welcome to join us for a couple of happy hours at our good sponsor's microbrewery restaurant for food and drink.
PFDS will host current club members and prospective club members 2 PM on Saturday Dec. 13 at an open meeting at Moraine State Park after the Monthly tournament. A gourmet soup and bread meal will be served, but those who would like to attend are asked to bring a side dish or dessert for the buffet. Bring your own beverage, but alcohol is not permitted in Pennsylvania State Parks.
We are very excited about the renewed energy in our club locally, and the future of our sport globally. Hope to see you at 10 am for the Monthly club tourney and afterwards at Cabin #1 for the PFDS club meeting.

Allegheny County Parks director Andy Baechle confirmed the funding for 54 concrete tee pads to be installed in 2009 at Deer Lakes Disc Golf Course! A partnership timeline with PFDS has been approved for the first phase of the installation to occur in March and April.
What a huge commitment from the county to complete this world class course. Ten thousand thank you's!
All hands are needed on the weekend of March 14/15, March 28-29 and April 25/26 to build retaining walls on some of the pads, to frame and fill the base, and to help on the pouring and finish.
Plan on spending 3/14 Saturday afternoon (after the Deer Lakes Monthly) helping construct tie walls. Daylight Savings time will begin this weekend, so we'll have light until after 7 pm.
Bring work gloves, wheel barrows, shovels, rakes, levels, sledge hammers, and other implements of construction.

From the desk of Jon Ebel:
I have decided to step down from my duties as Communications Director for the Pittsburgh Flying Society. I have accepted several freelance writing projects that require more attention than I had previously estimated. These are exciting and career-enhancing projects that I would like to explore.
I believe PFDS needs someone with the time, devotion and reliable software to effectively hold and maintain this position. It is a very important job. Communicating about the club and the sport itself is something we must all do to keep disc golf alive and thriving in Pittsburgh. I know I will continue to do so however I am able.
It is also important to link up with other sites. Ive been doing so with the Walls Are Bad site, adding some of our events/tournaments every month. I think this may have contributed to the time PFDS made it onto WDVE.
Its also a good idea to take full advantage of social media as its the way of today and likely the future of media. I was disappointed (and confused) when someone suggested NOT to use Facebook as a marketing/recruiting tool. Wouldnt that be defeating the purpose? The Facebook group now has 70 members (nearly 50 more members since I started to manage it).
If someone would like to continue publishing The PFDS Spin, Ive attached the three issues Ive completed so that whoever wants to do it will have the layout.
I will keep my promise and assist J. Gary with this years Scholastic Series (except for the one at Knob which falls on my wedding anniversary).
Ive also attached the most complete mailing list as an Excel document. I created it manually, which was a pain but well worth it. Ive been updating it with the info Kurt has sent me before each Spin distribution.
I will continue to do what I can to promote disc golf and other disc sports since Ive always had a great time playing with my friends.
Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to become more involved with the sport I enjoy. Im sure to see you on one of the courses!

HOLING OUT: 803.13 B
Disc Entrapment Devices: In order to hole out, the thrower must release the disc
and it must come to rest supported by the chains and/or the inner cylinder (bottom and
inside wall) of the tray. It may be additionally supported by the pole. A disc observed by two or more players of the group or an official to have entered the target below the top of the tray or above the bottom of the chain support is not holed out.
What does it mean? Wedges don't count and the ones that slide through the tray won't count either.

sandalbagger
Dec 30 2010, 01:48 PM
I don't like the rule change about moving obstacles that extend past your lie. This is going to be abused. People are going to try and move whole trees out of the way. Then that tree will be moved somewhere that my disc is going to land and hit the tree and roll back to the teepad. Even though that tree wasn't in that place when the round started. I think this was a big mistake. I don't like it 1 bit. The old rule was fine.
