Here are the details about the club sponsorship program for this year's state Championships May 3-4 at College Lodge.

Last year PFDS sponsored at the $100 level and sent the top current club members by PDGA player ranking. I will propose to the club's board of directors to do the same this year.

Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship Club Sponsorship Program

Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship May 3-4, 2008
* PDGA B-tier * MADC Championship-series *

Host Club: Indiana Disc Links Association (IDLA)
Site: Indiana University of Pennsylvania College Lodge disc golf course
Field: 90 players; 72 holes of stroke play.
At stake: Paid entry to the 2008 United States Disc Golf Championship (USDGC) for the top Pennsylvania Open player.
Paid entry to the 2008 United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship (USADGC) for the top Pennsylvania Advanced player.
Paid entry to the Unites States Women's Disc Golf Championship for top PA woman player.
Estimated $2500 Open purse, including at least $750 added.
Handsome player package to all amateur players.

Purpose of the Program: Increase the size, prestige and payout of the 2008 Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championships (PSDGC). 100% of the club sponsorship monies will be used for three things: 1) to pay the 2008 USDGC entry fee of the top finishing Pennsylvania Open player, the USADGC (Am Nationals) entry fee for the top Pennsylvania Advanced finisher, and the USWNC (Women's Nationals) for the top Pennsylvania woman; 2) to pay for special-edition PSDGC merchandise given only to representatives of Pennsylvania disc golf clubs competing in the PSDGC; 3) any additional club sponsorship money after 1) and 2) are fulfilled will be paid out for top Open, Advanced and Woman Pennsylvania finishers expenses associated with attending their national championship tournaments.

Purpose of club sponsorship: To give Pennsylvania clubs the best chance of sending their own members to the USDGC, USADGC and the USWDGC, having their club members national championship entry fees paid for.

Benefits of club sponsorship:
Spots in the field will be held for sponsoring clubs members until MARCH 28. The number of spots reserved for sponsoring club members is dependant upon the level of sponsorship:
$100 Large club (~40+ members) 10 spots
$75 Medium club (~20 members) 6 spots
$50 Small Club (~10 members) 3 spots
Sponsoring clubs will be featured in the tournament program and by prominent display of
club-provided banners at tournament site.
Special edition tournament merchandise given to each of the club-sponsored players.

How the club sponsorship will be paid out:
The paid entries into the USDGC, USADGC and USWDGC will be made on behalf of the top Pennsylvania Open, Advanced and Woman players by IDLA, the host club of the PSDGC. These prizes will be paid for 100% from the Pennsylvania Club Sponsorship program and be in addition to whatever other cash or prizes are won in the tournament.
Pennsylvania Club Sponsorship monies will pay for special edition PSDGC merchandise given to each club-sponsored player.
If, on May 11, 2008, the top finishing Pennsylvania Open, Advanced, and Woman players do not commit to representing PA at the USDGC, USADGC and USWDGC, the paid entry fee and any other national championship tournament expense credits will be forfeited to the next eligible Pennsylvania Open, Advanced or Woman player.
Payout will be in the form of a check written by IDLA and paid to the USDGC, USADGC, and USWDGC for the amount of the entry fee.

Responsibilities of sponsoring clubs:
CLUB SPONSORSHIP MONEY (PAYABLE TO IDLA), PLAYER REGISTRATION MONIES AND PLAYER REGISTRATION FORMS MUST BE BUNDLED AND RECEIVED (ELECTRONICALLY VIA PAY PAL OR HARD COPY & CASH) BY 11:59 P.M. ON MARCH 28.
Sponsoring clubs have the freedom to choose their player representatives in whatever manner they like; for example, clubs could require membership in their organization as a requirement of inclusion in their bundle. Sponsored players can be professional or amateur, but must be Pennsylvania residents. Clubs could require their players to pay their own entry fees, or could pay for them by holding qualifying club events to raise the entry fee and/or sponsorship money. Clubs could use player ratings, tag ladder standings or other methods of determining their representatives.
A sponsoring club may not bundle more player registrations than their sponsorship level allows. However, a sponsor club may send less registrations that the maximum number. Non-sponsored registrations will be put into a queue based on when they are received to be processed beginning March 29.
A sponsoring club must ensure that all their sponsored players agree to accept the bids for USDGC, USADGC or USWDGC should they finish as the top Pennsylvania Open, Advanced or Woman player in the 2008 Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship.

Responsibilities of the sponsored players:
Complete the Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship entry form and submit it with entry fee (if not being paid for by sponsoring club) to the sponsoring club in time for the clubs registration bundle to be RECEIVED by IDLA by MARCH 28, 2008.
Declare their intention to represent Pennsylvania at the USDGC, USADGC or USWDGC no later than May 11, 2008, and complete the registration form required for their respective national championship.

Responsibilities of Host Club:
Indiana Disc Links Association (IDLA) will post registered players list at PDGA.com and update regularly.
IDLA will keep a waiting list of non-club sponsored registrations received before MARCH 28. On March 29, those registrations already received will be added to the field in the order they were received up to the field limit of 90.
IDLA will award USDGC, USADGC and USWDGC invitations at the conclusion of the PA State Disc Golf Championships. Checks for the entry fees of the top Open, Advanced and Woman players will be sent by IDLA to the respective national championship on behalf of the qualifying player.
If the club sponsorship program generates more money than the cost of the entry fees for the USDGC, USADGC and USWDGC, plus the cost of special edition merchandise for club-sponsored players, then those additional funds will be used to pay for some level of tournament expenses for the Open, Advanced and Woman qualifiers.

I guess the three years of college I attended is not helping me here. I don't get this at all. And the sad thing is, I've read it several times and it's still confusing.

So basicaly what I gather is that in order to go to this you have to be in a club and ranked among the higher within the club to make the cut. So since I am in PFDS, I don't have to worry about the club sponsorship stuff.

But say I really want to go play at this, but my (and a few others) PDGA ranking is not high enough within PFDS, does that mean we can form a club to pay for sponsorship at this event in order to participate?

I dunno, I guess I was born confused.

To answer your question...No you don't have to be in a club to play in the PASDGC. This Club sponsorship program is a way for us to raise money for entry fees so that we can send the winners of Open, Advanced and Womens divisions to their respective national tournament. For example, Alanna won the top women's spot last year and had her entry fee to the United States Womens Disc Golf Championship paid for.

We hold, reserve, spots to clubs that sign up through the club sponsorship program. Then, starting in April we accept entry forms from other players. You can still send me your entry fees before April regardless if your signing up with or without a clubs backing. All entry fees that i recieve before the end of march that are not through the club program, i'll just hold on to them and enter them in order that i recieved them.

By the way, let me inform everybody on some progress. Flyers should be finished, printed, and mailed to PA clubs next week. I'm still waiting to see if we will have a Title Sponsor this year. I've been working with the Indiana Regional Medical Center and things have been going well. I will have an answer by early next week.

We have a lot of new and old sponsors already closed. Which means more money added to the Pro Purse. At least $750.

I should have some flyers at Moraine's Feb. monthly to pass out.

SWEET

The hospital turned me down for being our title sponsor this year. They did make a $500 contribution to the tournament, which is greatly appricated. This is definitly going to be the biggest and best PASDGC EVER.

PA State Championships at Indiana in May.

The Club sponsorship program is the way that Pennsylvania clubs can reserve spots in the field for their members by paying a sponsorship to the tournament. 100% of the money raised from the club sponsorships will pay the entry fees for the top Pennsylvania Pro Open, Advanced Amateur and Women players to attend their respective national championships, as well as a commemorative tournament disc for each club-sponsored player.

Last year, 55 of the 90 spots in the tournament were filled by club sponsored players, and we expect that even more will be so in 2008. Pennsylvania players are encouraged to promote their club's participation as a sponsor of this year's state championship for 10 of their members ($100), 5 of its members ($75) or three of its members ($50). March 28 is the deadline for clubs to submit their sponsorship fee and paid registrations for their sponsored players.

Players who may not be sponsored by a club can still register for the tournament. Those registrations will be put in a queue, and after the March 28 club pre-registration deadline, entered in the tournament in the order that the registrations were received.

The event sold out last year and will probably fill even earlier this year. Bids to national championships, 4 rounds of competition on one of the best courses in the state, at least $750 added to the Open purse and a nice player package for all amateurs make this event not to be missed.

That would be up to the club itself. There are may ways a specific club could go about picking which members will be included into the club sponsorship program. To quote J. Gar, "Sponsoring clubs have the freedom to choose their player representatives in whatever manner they like; for example, clubs could require membership in their organization as a requirement of inclusion in their bundle. Clubs could use player ratings, tag ladder standings or other methods of determining their representatives."

I'm assuming your a member of the PFDS, you would have to talk to the President, or whoever is in charge, so they can determine who and how players shall be included. Last year the PFDS designation was based on two factors; PDGA player rating, and who sent their entry fee and form into J Gar by a certain date. They also divided it into 5 Pros and 5 Ams.

Pro

1. J. Gary Dropcho

2. Jerry Gotcher

3. Red Whittington (renewed annual member)

4. Matt Miao

5. Mike Speaker

Advanced

1. Mike LaGamba (new Lifetime Member)

2. Larry Gioia

3. Greg Meitus

4. Marcus Ranii-Dropcho (new Lifetime member)

5. Rob Johnson

As for Moraine...I woke up at 7:30, looked outside and said to myself there is no why i'm driving 1 1/2hrs. I should have came just to put you in your place! :D

Okay...for the decision makers in the organization, is there a simple layout for the criteria used in deciding who is and isn't sponsored by the club? I could see a seniority based approach. Are there alternates considered? Has anyone seen Chewbacca or Matt lately btw

I have a thought on that. Maybe the club could vote on it. If we were to have a one day 2 round tournament. $20 entry, top five pro's top five ams get the spots as well as splitting the purse for entry. If we had 10 open players, that would cut entry for the five players by $40 each.Last year there were 9 open PFDS members and with Dave moving up that would make 10. The ams had 13 PFDS members, and I imagine that field has grown since last year. That would almost pay the entry for the top five am spots. Let me hear some feed back.
I wonder if I would have thought of this if my rating was in the top 5?

jmc2442

I think your suggestion is a good one. I'll duke it out for one of the am spots.

kUrTp
Feb 14 2008, 10:13 AM
You can also base who gets sponsored by the PFDS by last years standings in the PASDGC 07. It would break down as followed:

Chris Deitzel
Jerry Gotcher
Red
Sid Olcott
Tim Wright / Matt Maio (they tied at 247)
"Minus J Gar because he's on IR"

Ams would be a little different considering Alex Fore and Greg Meitus might not be here. Dave Olcott is now Pro. Myself and Alanna will be included in IDLA's bundle. So I have...

Rob Johnson
Larry Gioia
Scott Heintzleman
Libby - (If he's going to be here)
Micheal Hoeg
Dave Kuhrt - (If Libby is no going to be here)

Just a thought on how this can be arranged. I do like the idea of playing a One Day two round event just because that would help pay for the entry fees. But it does need to be voted on...

Feb 14 2008, 01:28 PM
That's an interesting idea...would it be played at The Lodge? Making it a warmup monthly playoff for a club sponsored IDLA PASDGC superminiseries top 5/tourney minifundraising opportunity? When is The Lodge able to get all the baskets back into their rightful home?

kUrTp
Feb 14 2008, 02:49 PM
We do have a Course Championship schedule in the beginning of April but that is after the club sponsorship is due. The deadline for the Club Sponsorship bundle is March 28th. The Lodge doesn't go back in until April 2nd. That's not IDLA decision, it's IUP's. We've tried in the past to have the baskets put back earlier but it won't happen. For whatever reason, they just won't do it.

So if a "playoff" is whats going to determine who is included in the sponsorship bundle it will have to be played at another course.

kUrTp
Feb 14 2008, 06:12 PM
Just another thought on Sid's idea...The money collected from the one day two round playoff could be used to pay the $100 fee for the Club Sponsorship Program. Then the remaining money would be used to pay the individual player's fee.

From the PFDS Official Announcements thread:

"Kurt Poole, Assistant Tournament Director of the PA State Disc Golf Championships, spoke about this year's championships May 3-4 at Indiana, PA. The board approved a club sponsorship of $100 to the PA State Disc Golf Championship. The sponsorship allows PFDS to select 10 players to represent the club at the Championships, and voted to allocate 5 spots for Open players, 4 spots for Advanced players and 1 spot for a Woman player. If no woman player is put on the roster, an additional spot will be made for an advanced player.
After discussion about the method used to determine PFDS's club sponsored players, the board decided to require that all sponsored players must be current members of both the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society (PFDS) and the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). Current PDGA player ratings will be using to determine the Open, Advanced and Woman player. Participation in PFDS monthly tournaments and results from 07 PA States could be used as determining factors after player rating is concerned."

more info for the tournament can be found here: PASDGC Flyer (http://www.pfds.org/docs/PSDGC08_PreRegistration.pdf)

Alot of members are not renewed and showing as current with the PDGA. Therefore, those members player ratings are not available to the club for consideration for these sponsorship spots. If you are wanting to be considered for the club sponsorship please let me know via [email protected] or via phone (412.418.7803). Provide me your current player rating and contact info.

Two Open spots are claimed:
Jerry Gotcher
Chris Deitzel

The following players would be next in line for Open.
Red Whittington - 964
Sid Olcott - 961
Mike Speaker - 949

No Am Spots are secure. Here is the list of current available players:

Jeff LaGrassa - 953
Marcus Ranii-Dropcho - 940
Alex Fore - 924 (will be in Cali)
Robin White - 923
Scott Heintzleman - 920
Jason Aurila - 917

Women:
The only player I know that is going to be current PFDS and PDGA is Lori Deitzel (sorry I dont know her last name Chris). If there are any others out there please step up!

If you are going to be renewing soon and would want to be considered for sponsorship, knowing your player rating falls higher than or close to those listed here for your appropriate division, then PLEASE let me know by 11:59PM Saturday. Contact will be made with all players Sunday for spots.

If there are any concerns/questions please feel free to contact me at emaill address or phone# listed above.

Rd. 1 - White to B pin

Rd. 4 - White to A pin

The 20% percent will NOT be invited to USADGC but, the First Place finisher will have a paid entry to the USADGC.

The TD of the USADGC only got back to us for the Paid Entry Fee, never for the PASDGC being a qualifier. :(

All bets are off on #9.... I cleaned it yesterday! You should place your bets on #4 &amp; #5 and that would ensure you of taking home the kitty!!

well here's my quickness with more to come later I'm sure...

WHAT A WEEKEND!!! One Team of awesome friends throwing down to Four Words...

brown chicken brown cow!!!

I played as well as I expected, nothing great, only one not so good round. If you do not already know the Indiana course is unbelievably demanding on your body... Up and Down that slope thirty times is enough to take it out of the best of them... I know for certain I used muscles I didnt even know I had just walking. Bryan Schlemmer (PROPS TO HIM) won the Intermediate division by a lot over me, I placed 7th outta 26ish I think. Not too bad.

I have to give *MAD PROPS* to Mr. Pooleyosis and his better half, the one and only defending and still reigning PA State Female Champion Lady Swank! The Pooles were more than generous hosts to Sid and myself by giving us a comfortable place to crash for the weekend with all the comforts that come with a home, and, after all was said and done, Alanna is once again PA State Female Champion and Kurt CO-TD'ed the best disc golf weekend I've had in a while. All killer right there folks.

MAD PROPS also go out to Sid Olcott who tossed a stellar forehand Firebird skip for a 240' Ace on Hole 17 to take the pot. Good shootin' bro! Even more fun chillin like villians....

Shot of the weekend for me was a 90 foot putt on 18 to save a bad hole with alot of yinzers looking on n'at....

to everyone I played with Sunday... "uauauauauauauahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" :)

SEE YINZ NEXT YEAR N'AT.

I know I had a good time this weekend! After three rounds and only 3 strokes off the leader, I knew it was possible to win that USDGC spot....that is 'til my wheels fell off during the fourth round deuce fest! Nonetheless, the tournament was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed playing with a lot of dg'ers I've never played with before (Nate, Nick, Linc, Chas and Jamey). I also had a good time hangin' at the Twin Pines Motel with several of the Sedgley Woods gang (Pete, Stu and Mike, etc.) Kudos to Michael D, KP and the small group of IDLA volunteers who made this what it was....

a great tournament!

I just want to say thanks for this past weekend. I had a great time at the event.

I just have a couple of things that I would like to say. I have to admit that I am kind of disappointed with the payout's. My good friend Jeff took second in INT. and got $18. This is the State Championship and he get's $18? Last year the club package's where very nice, what happened this year? Did a bunch of everyone's entry fee get paid into the Pro divisions? We as clubs paid an extra fee, I understand what it went for but there was more money than was required. I mean the player's package was a DX Roc w/o the Stamp for the Tourney, a t-shirt, a water bottle and a CD. Then the clubs got one more disc. Maybe what kill's me is that I don't throw either of the disc's that were given out. But I just felt like that part was lacking.

That is just my $.02, I had a great time playing the course. I rather enjoyed the groups I played with and the people I met. Already looking forward to States next year.

Let's go over this Player's Package: <ul type="square"> DX Roc - retail value approximately $10 t-shirt - retail value approximately $15 water bottle - retail value approximately $5 CD - retail value a few dollars[/list]
Looks like the retail value of the player's package was somewhere between $30 and $35. The entry fee for Intermediate was $36. Take out PDGA player fees and I'd say everyone got a pretty good deal. Imo, the player who took 2nd place was fortunate to get even $18 worth of merchandise.

If I am playing as an AM why are the player's pack's nothing but plastic? I understand wanting to get the sponsors products/name out there so they feel like they are being represented properly, which is the point of getting sponsors but with it being a State Championship I was just expecting more. I just had a different mindset with it being that and not just some Saturday Tourney that I decided to play that day. I am not by any mean's trying to compare this event to something like a Bowling Green, but I just was expecting/hoping for more from them. I mean a player who did not place or did not come as a club sponsored player never got a disc that had the State's Stamp on it.

Intermediate was $36 minus $10 for current PDGA status, so you paid $26.
The player pack was stated to be valued at $17. With the Roc, T-Shirt, CO-OP water bottle, mini and coupon value for Spaghetti Benders it could EASILY come in at $20.
Take away the fees and consider that 50% of the field was paid.

What more do you think your friend (who shot VERY well, btw) should have gotten?
I came in 7th and got $9 bills.
I was happy with all the stuff I walked away with this weekend.

The prize for AM's is more in the experience.
If thats not how you are looking at it playing Intermediate and you are expecting some huge payday and recognition then you better get real good real fast....

thats MY $.02

May 06 2008, 11:09 AM
^^^ btw, to add on, I need to get real good real fast as well.... thats not my $.02, thats fact. LOL

I can't argue with anything you guy's have said. I think it was just my assumptions/expectations where higher than they needed to be. And yes, I did play like crap. I think i came in 5th from the bottom in Am1.
