What are best tourneys in IA? I lived in CR most of my life and now live in Texas. I am coming back to IA later this year and would love to hit up a tourney.

I am relatively new to the sport and am looking for a few tournaments to go to early in the season. I seen that there is a tournament in Oskaloosa on March 8th. Is this a tournament that would be beneficial for a novice player to go to, or would I be better off grabbing a couple of friends and hitting Pickard or Big Creek for the day?

Osky would be a good tourney to go to, if the snow ever melts there. They've had 40 inches of snow in February alone (that's a lot for southern Iowa), and still have a foot on the ground as of this morning (according to NWS). The front 9 is pretty short and beginner friendly. The back 9's quite a bit longer.

Thank you for the insight. I went to Walnut and golfed a round this weekend. After seeing how I played there, I am thinking I might have to hit the links a couple more times before hit another tourney.

Walnut's a difficult course. Osky is much easier.

Went out to Big Creek yesterday to play for the first time.... THANK GOD for the nice weather we had. The ice was a little rough to play on, but the other conditions were PERFECT!!! It was nice not having to play in a coat for the first time this year.

Walnut doesn't open until later in the season. Big Creek is the best course to play early season...not too hilly, not too poisonivyee..

If you are going to be around during the end of May, the Des Moines Challenge on the 24-25 would be a great tourney to attend. It is about 1.5-2 hours away, but DEFINITELY worth the drive. You play 4 courses in two days.

You should try the Legion of Doom tournament May 17-18 in Marion. I have not played this event, but the tournament director Doug Peyton is top notch and a class act, and by all reports this tournament is a very good one. His phone number is 319-373-2301. Marion is basically a suburb of Cedar Rapids. Doug would also likely have good info on any leagues in the CR/Iowa City area.
