Nope, not working in the field. Had a few job offers out of college, one in Montana and one locally, but decided to just get a M-F 9 - 5 job so I could continue to play disc golf on the weekends. I work for a bank now and process 2nd mortgage loans.
And no I don't remember meeting you, but I'm sure it was at World Doubles.

That place was hot as crap.
We met some guy in there and started talking disc golf with him and I gave him a disc. He wanted our signatures on them and then he asked if we had ever won a tournament or something.
I said "well I won this small tournament [it was a B Tier] a few years back"
He says "man, write that on there so I can show my friends who I met [like I'm some big dog or something]"
*sign my name on the disc and write 2005 Crooked Creek Classic Champion*
Then he looks at JJ and asks the same.
JJ says "I won the amatuer world championships in 2004"
The guy says "man that is much better than that small creek tournament you won"

Why do you use all white discs? Is there a reason?
When I was in college, I wanna say sophomore year maybe, I started improving rapidly. However, my game suddenly fell a part except my putting.
My putter was white and the only disc in my bag I liked and trusted.
So I went out and bought every disc in my bag in a white version (well except a blue CE leopard which I lost not long afterwards).
I seemed to immediatly get out of my funk and I supersticiously credited it to white discs.
When I won discs, I always grabbed something white. Now I own 400+ discs and would guess around 350 of them are white - no point in turning back now.

I'm just pointing out that you told me that saying "now you're acting stupid" could get me a warning, but now you are calling a fellow PDGA member "unattractive."
I just thought it was worth pointing out that what I actually consider all in good fun, seems to be along the lines of what you consider a "personal attack." And you are the one who chose to post it.

HELP ME MTL!
my brain is frozen. here is the writing assignment that i will be forced to write a "on the spot" paper for my MI teacher certification test.
"It has been said that "any persons who take it upon themselves, on their own private authority, to break a
bad law thereby authorize everyone else to break the good ones." In an essay to be read by a history
teacher, state whether you agree or disagree that breaking a laweven a bad oneis never justified.
Support your position with reference to your own reading and knowledge of history or current events in
the United States or elsewhere. Your purpose is to persuade your reader to accept your position."
so i would argue that it is absolutely justifiable to break some laws. so far, in my outline (which is all i need to write a phenominal peice of work, is the example of Plessy vs Ferguson
secondly, (this may be offensive to readers) Dr. Kavorkian and Euthanasia (this is only a possibilty unless i can find something better.
so............. I need one more really moving example from history, or current events, i would like to have three examples to argue. HELP!!!!!!!
MTL21676

Hmmm......
I guess the classic example is stealing food for your family to eat = which would be a great opening - very moving....something like...
"It's a cold night and you walk in your home. You see three hungry children playfully dancing around the home and your beautiful spouse preparing a nice home cooked meal. Everything seems to be perfect and from the outside looking in the perception of success and happiness shines over your yellow daisies placed in a clear jar on your window seal through your window and across the perfectly manicured front lawn to the outside world. However, you are the only person who knows how sad and upset this seemingly story book family is about to become as soon you tell them of your horrible day.
You see, today you were fired from your job. With your 3 kids and a spouse staying at home to take care of them and raise them, money has always been tight. Paycheck to paycheck is never the way you envisioned yourself living but the bonus of a loving home more than made up for what you financially didn't have.
However, that love youwill always feel only goes so far. It certainly can warm a cold heart but it cannot put food on your table."
But if you need something specific.....
well, I'm only a writer, not a researcher :D

The Curse of the Buckhorn Open
Robert Leonard
#21676
Its a car ride Ill never forget. I was driving on US 1 North back into my home town of Raleigh in my folks 1996 Buick Century and it was pouring rain. I had been playing in a tournament all day in this crap, this poor excuse for a car wasnt exactly what I would prefer to drive in the rain and I was cold, tired and ready to get home.
Instead of the radio playing in this old Buick, I was entertained in another way. I was smothered by the sound of yelling from Jody White in the back seat on a cell phone. Jody was in the middle of a huge argument with his girlfriend about him quitting the tournament. Because I suck, It poured all day and my favorite, I hate this **** tournament was all I could make out thanks to that screechy nose that only old wiper blades going back and forth can only make and because, well, I was laughing pretty hard.
So why was I laughing when I was freezing, soaking wet and trying to avoid an accident that would lead to telling my parents why their Buick was totaled? Because the whole **** tournament is cursed! Jody screamed into the phone. My question had been answered; the Buckhorn Open was cursed.
The Buckhorn Open has occurred seven times and each year there is more and more evidence of the curse. Each year something strange happens, but yet, every year, people always play the event. Perhaps it is simply because Buckhorn is a great course. Perhaps it is because the event is always in February and golfers are itching to play a tournament again. Perhaps, and Ill go with this argument, disc golfers like it when things are little different; this event could easily be classified as a little different.
In the seven years of the event, I know of at least three golfers who were pulled over for speeding on the way to the course. Bob Weston of actually Raleigh flipped his car just a few miles from the course one year because the weather was so bad. Bert Williams was getting ready to start the two hour drive from Greenville, North Carolina to the course when was questioned as to why he was running from the police when he was pulled over for speeding. After explaining that he had no intentions of ending up on Americas Wildest Police Chases, he was lucky enough to just get a ticket and be on his way. However, his truck broke down right after he left and he never made it that Sunday morning.
It turns out that Bert was actually one of the lucky golfers that day. Bert made it back home and sat in his heated house while 80 some odd other people were playing in the tournament during an ice storm wishing they could trade places with him. The weather was so bad that the fourth round was canceled. Just a freak incident maybe? Well, the next year an ice storm occurred again during the tournament. This time, the fourth round was shortened.
The two years Raleigh wasnt the focus of the weather channel during the tournament wasnt exactly paradise either. In the first year winds of almost 50 miles per hour roared through the course. It was so windy, David Hammontree threw every disc in his bag except his putter in the water over the course of the three consecutive dreaded water holes on the middle section of the course. These winds were so monstrous out on the water that Greg Mayday intentionally dropped a disc in a shallow section of the water that sat right next to the ninth tee so he could get to the drop zone in only two shots and insure he didnt lose a disc like he had the previous three rounds.
The crazy weather and even crazier automobile stories are just the surface. In the 2007 version of the Buckhorn Open Hall of Famer Carlton Howard lost the masters division of the tournament because he was busy fishing. Carlton, whose voice mail says If Im not here, Im either playing Frisbee or fishing, was doing the latter when the start horn went off. Not only did he lose the tournament because of this, he didnt even catch a fish.
So lets say just for laughs the weather turns out to be nice (which in seven years has only happened once) and you decide to play in this event. If you arent pulled over on the way and you forget your fishing pole, you finally get to play in this cursed event. Lets hope you remembered to pre-register; in 2007 there were more than 20 people on the waiting list.
You head out to the course and you are ready for a nice simple quick round. Wrong! The par 58 course winds through dense North Carolina woods and plays along Mr. Hammontree and Mr. Maydays favorite lake. This lake is not there for recreational purposes, not for a disc golf hazard and certainly not for beauty. No, this lake acts as the body of water required to be near all nuclear power plants for safety.
As you stand on the 11th tee the Sharon Harris Nuclear Power Tower hovers in the distance at about one oclock and provides a false aiming point for the tee shot. The shot is a big righty hyzer and the water acts as the fairway until the disc hopefully hyzers near the guarded and dry pin. Most players who have aimed at this tower for their tee shot have ended up with very big numbers on this hole and much lighter golf bags.
In fact, this tower is commonly the back drop for all putts on this green. If there ever was a place I dont want to be in this world if that thing exploded, putting at a disc golf basket for a triple bogey in freezing temperatures watching my umbrella blow away with the thought of how much my speeding ticket will cost me and after losing a bunch of discs because I aimed at the big giant tower that looks like it is the perfect spot to throw and is now the reason Im putting for six has got to be near the top of that list.
There is no other way to say it, the Buckhorn Open is cursed; however, I love it. I love the course, I love the tournament I love the stories. O.K., I admit it, I love the curse too.

It's clearly a joke. I thought my post was clearly a joke as well. I just forgot to add some smilies at the end. That's the shame in this style of moderating. It really does make people walk on eggshells and takes so much of the fun out of it.
I am not an abusive poster. To me it is embarassing to have my name on that list. For anyone looking that hasn't read about this topic, they will look at that list and see my name and it written that I have attacked someone. That is a harsh word to me. I would never attack anyone, and don't appreciate being labeled as such.

I have to admit that I was disappointed that someone already reported this one before I was tipped off about it.
so the question becomes "will MTL be given the identity of the reporter?"
Since I am notified via email of all posts that were reported, the answer is yes, I know who reported it.

my goal is never to win.
I think setting your goal to win is stupid.
If I shoot what I know I can shoot and play the way I can play will I win? Probably.
However, If I shoot that way and am satisfied with how I shoot and someone beats me then that is fine. I can only control what I shoot.

The issue is that if your goal is to win, you may make different decisions than if your goal is to cash. Or to end up in the top 5. Depending on how realistic those possibilities are should impact how you play.
Do I run at the 60 footer with a steep drop off behind it? If I need it to win and my goal is to win, then yes. But if I miss and drop a stroke and it costs me 2 places is it worth it?
How aggressive am I if faced with this shot on the second hole of the tourney?

larger than the first angle. The third angle is twice
the measure of the first angle. If n represents the
number of degrees in the smallest angle, which
equation correctly represents the relationship among
the three angles?
A. n + (n 20) + 2n = 180
B. n + (n + 20) + 2n = 180
C. n + (n 20) + 2(n 20) = 180

B. The second and third sentence show that the 2nd and 3rd angles are bigger than the first. Fourth sentence shows that 1st angle is "n". Therefore, n +(n+20) + 2n = 180. n=40 BTW. Right?

Exactly!
Have you had the chance to look through the latest issue of DISC GOLF WORLD yet? I mean no disrespect to Rick R. and his staff, they do and have done a fantastic job for the growth of Disc Golf over the years, but take a look at some of the pictures in there from the events of the European tour. The TD from one of the German events is shown in a TANK-TOP! And another picture shows him again (in the same TANK-TOP!) with a guy in what looks to be a WIFE-BEATER type top! Surely this will impact any future sponsor deals. Should the Europeans be allowed different standards than those of us who compete here in the US, or Japan, where the event standards appear to be very high?

what is your definition of a 'Solid Pro'.
wouldn't it be someone who cashed @ worlds? would beat the am field more than 3/4 of the time?

not saying I think that about you... but saying the case could be argued even further down the chain.

go back and figure out your entry fees for those tourney's vs taking home 2800 and see how much of a 'Solid' or whatever Pro you really are. To me a pro would be able to make money (and not a hundred or 2) after 32 events. That would barely qualify as a semi-pro if you looked at it in terms of other sports.
I havent run the #s on how much you actually made (minus entry fees) but i'd imagine it isnt much (if any)... and yes Im not even talking about lodging and travel (dont want to be nit picky).
again... im not saying you are a bottom feeder but im saying that point could be argued by others (and had been mentioned to me)... im still saying you are 'good' (again even though a bunch of people disagree)

You are probably right, I probably do lose money.
But If I played this game to make money you could call me an idiot. I play b/c I love it, I love the competition and I love the people and the times that I have.
I don't even look at like making money. If I cash for 50 dollars and the entry fee is 50 dollars, I say I won 50 dollars, not broke even. To me, I have already budgetted out the 50 dollar entry fee and the 50 dollar winnings is just a bonus. Every penny I make in winnings goes into my savings account.
Sadly, most people have lost site of that and have stoppped playing b/c they don't cash or some other nonsense. If I didn't cash at a single event all year I would still be at just as many next year.

thats a whole 'nother topic and a good point ABCD... if you average it out MTL made a little less than $20 per event... if you take out travel, etc. he comes out easily in the negative.
if you told someone outside the sport that you were a 'Pro' and you actually paid to play ... i think they would beg to differ.
please dont come and argue this now MTL... maybe its something intrinsically wrong with our sport... i dont care about that point... just agreeing that maybe the definition of pro is skewed.
things like this would be great to discuss over a pint @ a pub or something where people are face to face and have a chance to brainstorm/free think together... msg board = people find one word out of 1000 and harp on that word to skew things instead of looking @ the big picture when talking about things like this.

i accidentally voted for ross perot somehow... crazy internet polls
and BigWave...
here's what happened in my mind... i read MTLs claim "1. I would expect to win and I would."
i thought... hmm... MTL is a pretty good pro but is he really good enough to win every or even most of the tournies he played if he was in Advanced. I guessed that it would've been around 75% of the time (taking into account the times when the advanced winner was just on fire)... I was blown away that it wasn't even 50% and posted my findings.
i honestly thought more of him than the #s show as it sounds like you do too... if i have time maybe i'll pick a couple other pros in his level of play and do the same (and take names out so people dont get hung up on things) and see how they compare.

There is no question MTL is a solid pro. I'm pretty sure he came a stroke or two away from beating Schweb in a tournament last year. IMO if you can hang with Schweb you are obviously a solid player.

[here's what happened in my mind... i read MTLs claim "1. I would expect to win and I would."
QUOTE THE ENTIRE QUOTE.
You yourself just said on another thread that on a message boards people find small words or phrases and tear them apart and you didn't like it, yet you are now doing the same to me!
I said if I played am I would expect to win and I would OR I would expect to win and I would be uspet that I didn't.
EVERY player at EVERY tournament can say they either won or didn't. I was merely trying to say that I don't see how going back down to Am would improve your confidence b/c if I expected to win and I did, I would get nothing out of that. However, if I expected to win and didn't I would be very disapointed and lose confidence from that.
I don't judge myself based on who I beat or where I finish anymore now that I am in pro (only judge it based on how I played), but if I was playing advanced at my current skill level, anything but a win would be disapointing and I don't think anyone can argue that.
Does that mean I would win every weekend? Of course not. But if I played like I can ( and showed in some tournaments last year - like take Tupelo for instance, I would have won advanced by 14), then no amatuer in the world can hang with me. If I play poorly, then any amatuer in the world can hang with me.

M --> C... hilarious poll but please dont drift away from this thread being all about MTL! ;)
and MTL... this is the whole... if people were sitting around talking things would be easier.
to simplify I was saying I read that part and thought yeah... you could give it a run but I wonder how that works out in real world #s...
you also need to see that I was looking at your premise and conclusion and agreeing with it.
i agreed that it would be a confidence killer for someone of your level to play am... i even found the #s to prove it. I thought it was interesting and have done the same with a few others around your level and its about the same for them too... if you played am i'd imagine the odds would be amazingly in your favor to win every time.... not disputing that... just thought that it was crazy that perceptions didnt match reality for some 'good' pros in your 980 range here in the carolinas.
also might speak volumes about the carolinas and differences in regions since someone with a 950 rating might be the best in their area and clean up in a lot of pro tournies they play (but thats a perception or something I would 'expect' and would have to see #s to know for sure).
either way... please take yourself out of it... look @ the #s for you and the other examples I gave and tell me you arent surprised

it didn't surprise me a bit.
I had some weekends, even when I cashed, that I played very poorly.
Plus, we have lots of great ams here that are simply scared of playing where they belong b/c of Schweb and stuff.
I know that I often tell people that the Schwebs and McRees and Johnansons of this area are not what make this state so tough, it is the fact there are so many players like me that you have to battle with too.

Maybe I just view things differently...
but if I were to play advanced at a tournament this year, one of two things would happen.
1. I would expect to win and I would.

Jan 24 2008, 03:55 PM
I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here and say yours stays the same sense you have no tournaments being rated :D
As for how accurate....well...they are heck of a lot better than than they use to be as far as accuracy, that's for sure.
However, I remember just last year playing in a 1000 rated player-less field (which almost NEVER happens in NC) and I shot a very good round of 55 on a course.
The round was rated just over 1000, I'm thinking 1005.
I posted something about how I got screwed that I felt the round was easily 1015, probably 1020.
Chuck posted "well I don't know why you are complaining, the course has always had an SSA of 55 point something"
I responded "yes Chuck, but there was a new extended basket, and 2 new holes that went from a birdieable par 3 to a par 4"
The problem was the data didn't have those 1000 rated players in there and then if they were there, my round have looked a lot better b/c then I would have more than likely beat most of them or been within a shot or two of them (the record is 52). So b/c of this, there was no real proof the course was actually tougher.
I think that ratings should be based on the course whether than on what (and who) is shot. I have a hard time seeing how a 55 on a course with 10 1000 rated players is better than a 55 on the same course with 0 1000 rated players. The effectiveness of it might change (where my 55 was the hot round but in a field of 10 1000 rated players, it probably would not have been), but the 55 is still a 55. It seems to me that ratings are more of a representation of you played compared to the field instead of how you played compared to the course, which I don't like. I have no control on whether the field plays good or bad, I only control myself and my throws.
I also understand and agree with the need for the larger point swing on easy courses and the opposite on tough courses, but do have a problem with the fact that a 1030 round on some courses is no where near as good as 1030 round on other courses and I thought the point of ratings was to be able to compare scores on seperate courses since we have no standardization of par in disc golf.
I also don't like the fact that certain courses are very easy to get good ratings on certian courses (take The Dark Side at the Grange where the 1117 was shot - over par is 1000 yet there are 17 legit birdies on the course) and very hard to get good ratings on some courses (At Castle Hayne you can shoot 57 or 58 and be winning open and only get 1010 or so for the round)

He's probably talking about the Big Valley Challenge back in July. My 57 that same round probably didn't help the overall rating with no 1000 rated players in the field. Should of been a 56 though....silly bogey on the last hole!

Jan 24 2008, 06:14 PM
coolio, thanks!
in the DSA ratings method, MTL's Big Valley event was worth a -3.20 (lower numbers are better), while using the current ratings system yielded a 996 rating.
for a very incomplete comparison i looked at two other events from the same timeframe - the Brent Hambrick and the KCWO. at the Brent, a -3.20 would have earned a current rating of 1018. at the KCWO it would have earned between a 1018.
(btw, the current ratings system gave 1018 ratings to a 205 finsher and a 207 finisher at the Brent. that sorta doesnt make total sense, and cant happen with the DSA approach)
since those both came out too consistant to believe, i also did the Atlanta Open and the Majestic. a -3.20 was worth a 1014 at the Majestic and a 1006 in Atlanta.
i'd estimate that had more higher rated players been present, MTL may have cashed lower than he did, but would have received at least a 1011 average rating for the event.

The problem with playing against a courses' rating is that:
A) course layout varies too much for the course to have 1 "true" rating. Changing a few holes, playing alternate tees, etc - change the rating of the course, so a 55 ain't always a 55. (although they would technically be both 55s).
B) it wouldn't take into account conditions. 55 might be a 1010 rated round on that course on a sunny, calm day - but it could be a 1030 rated round on a cold, windy day.
By playing against the field, your rating is more reflective of how well you shot that day, on that layout, in those conditions.
Certainly, if everyone plays very well, or very poorly, the round ratings would be skewed, but i would think over the long haul it would be fairly accurate.
Regardless, there are shortcomings with any method of generating ratings (and putting together a course/competition ratings hybrid is probably a bit too extensive).

By playing against the field, your rating is more reflective of how well you shot that day, on that layout, in those conditions.
The field generates the effectiveness of the round and unfortantly the rating is included with this. I don't agree with that at all.
I've used this example very often.
Let's say the worlds are at Cedar Hills in Raleigh, NC (my home course and has an SSA of 49).
I shoot a 49 and there are 57 rounds better than that. The course record of 42 is shot 5 times as well. My 49 won't be 1000 and that 42 won't be 1070.
Let's say I shoot a 49 and I had the hot round. Now, that 49 is 1030.
That makes no sense to me. The effect of the 49 is based on how the field plays, but should my rating rating be rewarded / penalized based on how the field plays?

(take The Dark Side at the Grange where the 1117 was shot - over par is 1000 yet there are 17 legit birdies on the course)
16 gettable birdies (no way you can call #2 and #7 birdie holes). hundreds of rounds there by players over 1000 but the second best score EVER in practice or tournament is 46. skinner shot 41.
your example would be better made with a true short course.
MTL21676
Jan 25 2008, 12:07 PM
I forgot about 2.
My point was you have a course where I garuntee there are at least 4 or 5 birdies on every hole throughout the course of the round (except for those 2 holes) and yet, over par is 1000.
However, this proves how difficult the course is.
My definition of hard is comparison of WCP to Course par.
A course that is par 72 with 18 590 foot par 4's is not hard, although, everyone would be shooting over 54.

agreed- that reflects the slope that the ratings folks will tell you we don't need.
MTL21676
Jan 25 2008, 12:59 PM
to clarify, I meant 18 wide open flat 590 foot holes.
That WCP would be around 61ish I'd guess which makes it the same thing as a pitch and putt course, just with an added tee shot. This would be about 18 shots above a typical pitch and putt course, which would be representative of the extra tee shot.

Are you saying that it's even somewhat likely that 57 players shoot a "1000+" rated round (breaking 49 on a 49 SSA course) if only 4 1000 rated players are present at an event?
Are you saying it's somewhat likely that the same field of players plays two rounds, and in one round none in the field break 49, and the other round 57 players do? Barring weather differences, i don't think this is a likely scenario. Might a 49 vary in calculated rating between the two rounds? Yes, but i don't think it will vary nearly as much as your hypothetical.
For example, at the Raleigh Winter Jam, it appears that there was a 10-12 rating difference between the same score in the first and second rounds. Having played there, this can easily be attributed to the weather (it was raining harder/snowing in the 2nd round, being able to grip one's disc consistently became harder, and resulted in a ~1 stroke increase by the field). I would argue that the same score in the second round *should* be worth a higher rating since you're playing in more difficult conditions.
What was the weather like that day? Was it pouring rain? If you shot a 49 that day, during pouring rain, and it was the hot score, then yes, it may have been a 1030 rated round.
What pin positions were used when the course was calculated as a 49 SSA? What pin positions were used when a particular round was shot? Has the course changed since it's rating (growth, maintenance, etc)? Unless the course's SSA is continuously updated, and modified for different layouts, it becomes less meaningful. What method do we have for updating courses' SSAs on a regular basis?
As a course changes, a courses actual SSA may vary from the listed SSA, and you end up with courses that inflate or deflate ratings, depending on how accurate the SSA listed for the course vs. how the course was set up for that round.
Certainly, you can list a hypothetical situation, and show the flaws of the current rating system, but question is how realistic/likely are those hypothetical situations? Perhaps the more important question is: does the current ratings system work as a whole?

I was using my example as if it were the worlds.
at this years worlds in open there were 42 players over 1000.
