And that first issue is imminent. We are currently working on the website and switching hosts, so the FDM site is down at the moment. Perfect timing, eh? Ah well, it'll be pretty cool once it's going.
And while we did print a good number of copies, most are earmarked for specific deliveries. If you want em' as collectibles I suggest getting them earlier than later.

Partnership boosts sport's growth
By Betsy Gilliland| Staff Writer
Monday, April 07, 2008
Not everyone in town this week has a clubhouse badge for the Augusta National Golf Club.
No worries, though.
Brian Graham, the executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, is extending an open invitation to one and all to visit the PDGA-managed International Disc Golf Center in Columbia County's Wildwood Park.
The facility includes a clubhouse, pro shop, Headrick Memorial Museum, Disc Golf Hall of Fame, several practice holes and two disc golf courses. A third course is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
"This is an international destination for people in our sport. We're one of the fastest growing sports in the world right now," Mr. Graham said.
The facility is the product of a public-private partnership between Columbia County and the PDGA.
The PDGA was looking for a competition complex and a means to consolidate resources to promote growth, Mr. Graham said. The county wanted to increase traffic in Wildwood Park and to boost the local economy, he said.
Mr. Graham said the PDGA will hold 15 events at the facility this year. The center also has a tournament, which is open to amateurs and professionals, on the first Saturday of every month.
The executive director said "loaner" discs are available for people who want to try the sport.
"We have a lot of traditional golfers who take up disc golf, and they're amazed at the similarity," Mr. Graham said.
The rules, terminology, etiquette and strategy in disc and "ball" golf are the same.
However, Mr. Graham said, disc golf is less expensive, less time consuming and "has a smaller learning curve" than the conventional variety.
"For the most part, it is just a fun game. It is just a great walk in the park," he said.
For more information about the facility, call (706) 261-6342.
Reach Betsy Gilliland at (706) 868-1222, ext. 113, or

DID YOU KNOW?
- Wildwood Park's International Disc Golf Center, which is managed by the Professional Disc Golf Association, was christened with a Frisbee that contained the ashes of Ed Headrick, the PDGA founder and inventor of the modern Frisbee and disc golf's Pole Hole.
- Frisbees were invented by Yale University students in 1920. The students tossed tin pie plates from Frisbie Pie Company, calling out "Frisbie" to warn passersby. The spelling was changed when Wham-O Inc. began mass producing the saucers in 1957.
- There are seven disc golf courses at six locations in the Augusta area -- Pendleton King and Lake Olmstead parks in Augusta, Riverview Park and the Hippodrome in North Augusta, and Patriots and Wildwood parks in Columbia County. There is a charge of $3 for county residents or $5 for nonresidents for unlimited play at the two Wildwood Park courses.

Drinking is not illegal in all parks.
If this incident involved just drinking, it would be a double standard. Most golf courses allow drinking and cute chicks will even bring alcohol to you on the course. Drugs are another issue.
Typically, the substance being consumed is not the issue, its the people using them. If you are smoking pot in the parking lot or selling cocaine, you deserve to be arrested, disc golfer or not.

Brian Lamoreaux sent me this Cedar Hill's paper news article:
Disc golf course putt above the rest
By STEVE SNYDER
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 3:03 PM CDT
News Editor
Unknown to most residents, Cedar Hill has one, or even two, of the area's top golf courses tucked away in the southwest corner of town.
No, the city fathers didn't steal Tangle Ridge from Grand Prairie by moving the city limits a mile west.
Instead, the courses are at Lorch Park, and the choice of attack is not a Titleist 2 but a throwing disc (please, not a Frisbee.)
Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department Director Steve Meadors explained how the course idea took off and reached fruiting, in conjunction with Cedar Hill Disc Golf Association President Brian Lamoreaux.
Meadors said Lamoreaux approached him about a space for disc golf. Meadors' staff found a location at the park, the Lester Lorch Nature Preserve to be precise, and went from there.
We received permission from the Dallas County Open Space Program, who we have a 99-year use agreement with, to build the courses, he said. Lamoreaux recruited some well-qualified disc golf players from out of state to help with the lay of the courses.
During the same time frame, Lamoreaux began to plan, organize and coordinate the Cedar Hill Disc Golf Association (CHDGA).
The CHDGA and the Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department made a request to the Cedar Hill Community Development Corporation for funding, and the project was approved in the amount of $25,000. After funding was approved, there was a joint effort between the Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department and the CHDGA to construct the courses, Meadors said.
After the courses were completed, Meadors said the city has had a number of local players, players from around the DFW area, and players from out of state play the courses during the week and on weekends. In addition, the CHDGA has hosted a number of tournaments that brought players from the DFW area, the state, and out of state into the community. Lamoreaux said some of these tournaments have drawn 120-150 people, attesting to the popularity of the site.
The association is only a small portion of the park users that frequent the facility. Every time I go to the park I'm amazed at the number of cars in the parking lot, he said. And, due to the size of the park, you could play two full rounds and rarely run into another person.
Why the popularity? Because, according to both Meadows and Lamoreaux, the two courses are top-notch.
I have heard several players say that we have the best disc golf course in the DFW area, maybe in the state of Texas, Meadors said.
I have a biased opinion of the courses, but several local and national players have rated it very high in comparison to other courses in the area, Lamoreaux added.
He said it would probably rank as one of the top three disc golf sites in the Metroplex.
The most famous courses in DFW would be Veterans Park in Arlington, ZBoaz in Fort Worth and then the courses at Cedar Hill. The courses in Cedar Hill are shorter than Veterans and ZBoaz but the dense vegetation and challenging terrain factor into the enjoyment, Lamoreaux said.
Beyond that, the natural beauty at Lorch makes it a great place to play, he said.
There's nothing like playing a round of disc golf in a nature preserve. Get there early in the morning and you may see some interesting wildlife. Coyotes, bobcats, foxes, beavers and rattlesnakes, along with a whole host of other animals, inhabit this park, Lamoreaux said.
And, Lamoreaux's testimony is reinforced by out-of-town golfers.
One of the reasons we're here is because nobody else is here. It's got great terrain; a lot of courses are pretty flat, said Jace Ousley of Celina. All the holes are a challenge; it's laid out well.
There's plenty of hills; it's a nice course, Jeb Wortham of Fort Worth said.
Meadors hopes and believes the disc golf courses are worthy of state recognition.
We plan to submit the disc golf course facility to the DFW Parks and Recreation Area Directors Association and the Texas Parks and Recreation Society (TRAPS) for the Facility Design and Construction category, he said. If the facility places high enough with TRAPS, it will automatically be forwarded to the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) for consideration.
So, if you're worried about crowded tee times at Tangle Ridge, you can grab a Frisbee, even if you don't have a professional-model throwing disc, and tee it up at Lorch Park.

Disabled players' spirits soar on adapted Frisbee course
By Daveen Rae Kurutz
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, June 26, 2008
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/photos/2008-06-25/0626disc-a.jpg
Sarah Kleifgen feels pretty comfortable on a golf course.
But there are no irons or woods in sight when Kleifgen, 16, of Mt. Lebanon takes to the course. She plays disc golf, which uses flying discs instead of golf clubs.
"I really like it, and I think I'm doing pretty decent for it being my second time," Kleifgen said. "It's something I'm better at than golf, and I can turn my attention toward throwing the Frisbee rather than everything else. It makes me feel like a pretty good golfer."
Kleifgen was one of about 50 campers to take to adapted greens Monday for a new program at the Woodlands, a Bradford Woods nonprofit that offers enrichment activities for children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Dedicated to former camper Elora Geier, the program will be a weekly addition to the nonprofit's teen camp.
The Woodlands has had an adapted golf course for several years, said Patrick Monaghan, director of operations, making the addition of disc golf an easy choice. The course features three ramped holes and specialized equipment to allow people with disabilities to play.
The additional equipment was paid for with a grant secured by the Woodlands and Elora's Hope, a nonprofit founded by Dan and Leslie Geier in honor of their daughter, who died from leukemia two years ago at 14.
"It brings tears to my eyes," said Leslie Geier, 49, of McCandless, who was on hand for this week's kickoff. "(Elora) always looked at the golf course and said she never could have played golf, but she could have played this."
That's the beauty of disc golf, said Gary Dropcho, treasurer of the Disc Golf Association and former ranking national player. Dropcho was on hand to teach the teens, several of whom use wheelchairs, how to play the game. Dropcho said the Woodlands' course, which features heavy-duty equipment that can be stored away from the elements, is the only completely accessible course the association knows of.
"It's a great game for all ages and abilities of people," said "You don't have to be a superstar athlete to do it. They're taking right to it, throwing (the discs) right down the middle."
That's what Tony Mazzarini was trying to do throughout his three holes on the par three course. Mazzarini, who like Kleifgen has spina bifida, but does not use a wheelchair, was starting to get the hang of it by the end.
He never really knew Elora Geier but was in awe of the strength her parents showed in organizing and dedicating the program to their daughter.
"It's a pretty amazing thing to do," said Mazzarini, 17, of Bethel Park. "I'm sure she's loving that. And so are we."

That may be a course that should go pay-for-play. Grand Haven is a summer tourist location and I suspect that people causing problems may be those traveling thru or just there for the summer and not locals. Charging like they do for miniature golf and all the dutch tourist traps around there might just work to reduce those problems.

There's a show currently in rotation on PBS stations called: Adventure Lodges of North America. The 2-minute DG segment starts about 24 minutes into the show at the Camelot Lodge in Utah. The Course was designed by Jon Lyksett. There was an article on this place in DGWN a while back that showed Juliana and Shawn visiting it. Check your local PBS listings.

Alright, personally I think this is one of the very best articles (http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20080804/SPORTS/735224688/1066/MOUNTAIN&parentprofile=-1) about disc golf that I have seen written by a reporter for a newspaper, ever.
The reporter joins four guys on a round of disc golf and starts the article by talking about her quirky college friend who played Ultimate. The closing line of the article is: "With all due respect to my roommate, this is the ultimate."

great article about a course in North Hampton, CT
http://www.valleyadvocate.com/article.cfm?aid=8254
authors description of a basket...
Dotted throughout woods and fields on the north side of Burt's Pit Road are 18 curious-looking baskets. Each basket is elevated around a metal pole that stands about five feet tall. Chains extend from the center of the basket to a wide ring at the top of the pole to form a triangular shape, resembling a torso. When one writer for the Advocate first saw the baskets years ago, he thought they might be feeders, maybe for deer or the many other critters who call the land home. And like most of the parcel's wildlife, the baskets are almost invisible unless you look closely, because many are set strategically behind hummocks, near streams and on the edges of gullies off the beaten running and walking paths. They can barely be seen from a short distance and are not obtrusive to their surroundings; coming across one is like seeing a tiny sentry in repose at his post.

The mention in the Wall Street Journal was not positive at all; it noted that Austin TX was requesting $886,000 for a "frisbee golf course" and included a picture of what I think was an old Wham-o Masters frisbee (about 35 years old). The implication was of course that frisbee sports are kind of silly. I'd love to hear the story behind the $886,000 though - that's got to be the most expensive disc golf course ever!

The course was supposed to have a big proshop which probably took up a lot of the costs. At least building that would help the contractors, architects, plumbers, electricians, lumber companies, painters, etc.

Kamloops Daily News had a nice article on this past weekends ultraglide PDGA event.
congrats to Oregonians Feldberg, King & Sexton !! $$$$$$$$$$$$$
~~Dave holds course records on ALL Houck designed courses? WOW
June 15, 2009
Kamloops Dave Feldberg was the big winner at the Ultra Glide disc golf championship Sunday, but James MacInnes was the guy wearing the biggest smile.
Feldberg, the defending world champion and the top-ranked player in the world, shot 153 over three rounds to win the mens open division of the championship, which was held at the two Rose Hill courses on Saturday and Sunday. Feldberg, whose rating is 1,036, the highest in the world, earned $1,200 for his work.
But Feldberg, a native of Delton, Mich., was expecting to do well. MacInnes, a 31-year-old Vancouver native, had only one thing in mind earning a spot at the U.S. Disc Golf Championship, which is scheduled for October in Rock Hill, S.C.
That was my only goal, said MacInnes, who has been a professional since 1995. Im not here for cash or to beat (Feldberg). . . . Im proud of myself that I persevered and got in.
The spot at the U.S. championship went to the top Canadian, a title MacInnes sealed by a single stroke after shooting 169 over three days. He finished up with a 58 in Sundays final round.
I wasnt looking for that the jitters got me a little, he said. It was rough, but I stayed composed. I really stuck it out.
Feldberg was the main draw for the weekend event, which was played on the Rose Hill and Black Rose courses. He held a clinic for amateur players on Friday, and set about dominating the field on Saturday and Sunday.
He liked his chances coming into the tournament, and liked them even more once he saw the length of the two courses. Add in the fact that John Houck designed the Black Rose course, and Feldberg was a lock.
According to Feldberg, he holds the course record on every Houck-designed course.
The courses really suited me, said Feldberg, 32. There were a lot of big power shots . . . the strongest point of my game besides putting is the power side.
Feldberg, who said his caddy, Robert Mensing, was invaluable, shot 51 in each of the three rounds, two of which were played on the par-59 Black Rose course.
The second round, on the older par-55 Rose Hill course, was played in 70-km/h winds.
I have some experience in that Ive played a lot of tournaments in wind, Feldberg said. This year there was a national tournament in Oklahoma, which is about the windiest place in the States. Putting from (five feet), they wouldnt stay in the bucket.
To me, it was kind of windy (Saturday), but I felt I was still in control.
Feldberg had nothing but good things to say about the new Black Rose course and the people who helped build it. He also said that if he were invited back and it fit into his schedule, he would jump at the chance.
I cant imagine the work they put in out there laying those tee pads in the sun, he said. Its a really nice course theyve done a good job.
Nate Sexton of Oregon, who shot 163, was second in the pro division and took $800 back to his home in Oregon. MacInnes earned $500 for third.
Melody King of Oregon won the womens pro division and earned $730. Hank Stropky of Vancouver won the 40-plus division and $625, and 78-year-old Victory Fedyna of Edmonton won the legends division.
Mark Coupe of Kamloops won the amateur division.

I seriously doubt that is what Dave F. said. He may have said something to the effect that every course where he has set/tied the course record was designed by John Houck, or given the history of journalists' inaccuracies with DG, may have said something completely different.

DISC GOLF NOW AT NMS
Northwestern is very excited to unveil our new 6 hole disc golf course for our students. We once again have to thank a family in the community for working with us to design and install a disc golf course that can be utilized in PE with the students and by the community after school, on weekends or during the summer. Disc golf is a great game that requires no previous playing experience and can be enjoyed immediately. We are very excited to offer another unique middle school experience for the kids and hope to see the course frequently used by the community. Thanks for continuing to support us as we strive to improve our programs and facilities. Pictured above is Coach Holzapfel and 8th grader Lorelei Johnson.
PARENT RECOGNITION
Mr. Johnson (parent of an 8th grader - see picture in article above) donated his time and expertise to design and install a 6 hole disc golf course at NMS over the holiday break. This course will be utilized by the physical education department, but will also be open to the community on weekends and after school. This course provides a very unique and enjoyable experience for the students and would not have been possible without his assistance.

Disc golf
Dont laugh. The invention of the flying disc, which was trademarked as a Frisbee in the late 1950s by Wham-O, has spawned all kinds of activities, including football and ultimate competitions worldwide. Today there are more than 2,600 courses nationwide, with 11 to 14 percent annual growth. The Professional Disc Golf Association had more than 14,000 active members in 2009, as well as men and women pro players, who are sponsored by equipment companies. In 2010, worldwide tournaments offered nearly $2 million in prize money.

Why is this article so slanted towards a single aspect of the suspected criminal's interests and backgrounds? Why is it not incriminating against computer shop owners, IT people, t-shirt makers, techies or so on? Maybe better, why didn't it focus on people who let a 14 year old do activities without supervision and associate with strangers, let alone inappropriately associate in their presence?
"Leatherbury told the court Irwin invited the boy to his Onancock computer store, made T-shirts for the boy and gave him gifts, including disc golf equipment and a laptop computer with a webcam"
IMO, a hack job article that places an improper focus on a single aspect of the incident and shows the writer of having an internal bias of some sort. Why wasn't it a slam on back yard tenters? I hope local disc golf people are writing letters to the editor or paper itself complaining about the article and the way unfairly puts the sport in a bad light.
To be clear, no qualms with you or your post, cwphish. But I think we sometimes need to quit apologizing and stand up against the crap comments based on stereotypes and misperceptions.

As a therapist that specializes in working with children whom have been sexually abused and dually diagnosed, after doing some additional inquiries, it is clear that this ******* was using disc golf as a tool to engage and break down his victims. I'm pretty sure by the time he goes to sentencing, more victims will be identified. Unfortunately, ******* identified this to law enforcement who then identified it to the media. Add the drugs and this one is right up there with any negative publicity to date that I can recall. As far as misperceptions, I don't see one. This is a sexual offender that uses drugs, disc golf, t-shirts, laptops, etc. as a tool to commit his crimes. The recidivism rate for sex offenders with these documented behaviors is 88%, no matter the treatment, including castration.

One of the many tools, which included the computer store, computer gear, communications over social media outlets, gifts, drugs, in person meetings without supervision including at the victim's home, t-shirts and so on and was fueled by a real lack of parenting. I would think it would raise some sort of concern when a 44 year old is hanging out alone with your 14 year old son, provides him with a computer and web cam and calls him his bestest buddy.
I agree with the characterization of the low life, but I don't agree with the way disc golf seemed to be focused on, nor would I if the focus was a skateboard park or hot fishing spot. These creeps walk all areas of life. In education, youth volunteeer groups, amongst religious leaders, in youth sports and so on. About anywhere youth are present and accessible. When one of the cases hits the news, I don't broadbrush an activity, profession or vocation because of it. IMO the news article did and should be responded to.
Here's our area's latest: http://www.fdlreporter.com/article/20110701/FON0101/107010443/Former-New-Holstein-school-superintendent-gets-5-years-prison. I don't see the story being delivered up as a reflection on the nature of school district administration.

I live near boston and they had a special on NECN about how disc golf keeps kids off drugs. It was pretty funny because the guy who was interviewing us played 9 with us. Good *****.

In Finnish a couple of DGR members on Finnish TV. It says that there are about 200 courses in Finland 20 of which are in eastern Finland. The players said that is is fun and you can take the competition level to as high as possible and it is cheap. You need only one disc and it is cheap to play.
