1st monthly of the year is tomorrow!!! Anyone coming out to Knob?!?

... as was going to be attempted late last year, the ingredients for wedding soup are hanging out in the fridge waiting to be cooked tonight... Also some tasty rolls sitting on the counter next to the fridge. Dave and Sid are bringing the stove so its a definite go. Show up, rock a winter round, and then get some free lunch on Stella and the Olcott's. WOOT WOOT!

I know all you lurkers are out there... SEE YOU @ KNOB! :D

It should be noted that the course SSA so far is at 64.77, while Deer Lakes was 64.73 from the blues in 2007 and Moraine was 61.45 for the Blue Tees in 2007.

So, as of now, Knob Hill is playing the toughest of all 3 courses, though we are not using the long tees at Moraine.

Sorry folks....I have no hole-by-hole scores as I could not figure out how Deitzel wrote the scorecard! For those of you unaware, the township removes hole 17's basket from the sledding hill. As a result, we play a modified layout:

18's tee to 16's basket
17's tee to 18's basket
16's tee to the practice basket
Holes 1-15 are played as designed.

Because Sid wasn't there and I wore the TD hat yesterday, I decided we would play snow golf from the white tees. Here's the results:

56 Chris Deitzel
58 KB Clark
58 Jerry Gotcher
61 Scott Heintzleman
68 Scott McIntyre
70 Josh Charlton (played casual hitch-hiker) :D

Not too sure. Feels like someone kicked me in the side as hard as they could. Hole 1 it felt a little sore. Hole 4 my sidearm shot really made me wonder what that pain was in my side. Hole 8, felt like someone took a gun and shot a lightning bolt right into the side of my body. For those that were with me, it took about everything I had to not fall over on the ground and start crying.

Played the rest of the round with all coyotes backhand thrown very softly.

I feel a little bit better today, but it still hurts to cough or move certain ways. Anyone got any pain killers??? I can;t stand the thought of not being able to play this weekend.

We need to schedule a day/evening to dig out the trenches on 13 and 14 as well as spread some of the mulch pile that's taking up two spots in the parking lot.

We got the round in before the weather turned worse. I talked to Rex who had some business in Butler after we played today and said it took him 4 hourse to get home because Rt. 422 was a whiteout with an accident, and I-79 at Zelie was at a standstill.

With the right clothes it wasn't too bad today. Playing the winter-rules setup for holes #16-18 was a bit tricky, but Blue Tees are fun! #18 Blue tee to #16B basket played like a par 5.

Don't know all the scores but the Open went something like
J. Gary 63
KB 66
Jerry 67
Sid O 68
Dave O 69
Dave Kuhrt 70
Scotty Mac 73

I had the scores at
Jgary 63
Kb 66
Jerry G 67
Dave O 68
Sid O 69
Dave K 69
Scott M 73

It was cold, but after the third hole I was comfortable. The weather did get pretty bad here in the city for a bit. We saw two different accidents on the bridges coming home. Over all, had lots of fun.

What were the am scores, and what can we do to promote play in those divisions? Obviously, in the winter only the most committed (or those that most need to be committed) are out playing. Likely not to recruit new players until the spring, but perhaps this is something to talk about at the PFDS retreat this coming weekend at Moraine.

sandalbagger
Dec 08 2008, 11:02 AM
too cold for me.

And I'm getting some rest in for February when I will be taking Lori to Florida for the tournament Juliana is running. Dave/Sid perhaps you guys would want to go to Charlotte around that time?

As for the AM divisions for the monthlies. Seems like Moraine is the only course that gets a decent am turnout.

I think we need to think of it in terms of when WE started playing disc golf. I know when I started, I didn't want to play with people like J Gary and KB, because I was nervous, didn't feel I could compete, and they weren't MY friends.

It took quite a bit of effort on the part of J Gary to convince me and my friends to start coming out to the PFDS events back then.

Another problem I see at monthlies, is that certain people say thing like "well just move up if you want to play different tees, or move up if you want to win cash".

I think those are problems

As for the AMS, I'm guessing quite a few of them who play are getting sick of getting disc credit, and having to look through the same boxes of discs for prizes. Perhaps we should have a % cash payout like they do at Schenley. That would encourage more players to play ams, and would probably get rid of some of the almost-pros who keep playing up in our monthlies.

I think it is important that we not forget that some people will never be at the pro level, even our monthly pro level.

So what do we need to do to attract more ams???

1. Well first off, I think the %cash payout would be nice.

2. Offer a $1 division. That would allow newer players to put in $1 for the monthly, Knowing that they won't get any money back, but they will get to test out our league at an affordable price. Also, 1st time players, should be given a chance to purchase a NEW disc for 50% off on their first $1 event. These playes would still be able to pay $1 for the ace-pot. I think this might encourage newer players who are hesitant to sign up.

3. MIX the divisions. This has been a huge problem the last few years. When I first started playing, the groups would be mixed, you would have ams, and pros in the same group. Anymore, it is always the pros in one group and ams in another. I think we really need to get away from this. We need to mix up the divisions and groups so that everyone has a chance to play with everyone. This way newer players can get some good advice and experience playing with better players.

I'm not sure this will attract more players, but I think that it is very important that we mix the groups. THis will help us meet and know some of the players we never get to play with. Making the club stringer as a whole.

4. $1 CTP hole. WHen in Rochester this summer, I played their monthly event and they had a $1 CTP hole. Easiest hole on the course, anyone who wanted to put the $1 in could. Whoever wins the CTP, regardless of division wins all the money. This would allow ALL people the chance to win cash. Though I still think a 75% payout in cash would be nice for ams.

That is what I think. But the most important thing is mixing the pro and am groups again. This is how people like me, Sid, Dave and many others got into this sport. It was having the ability to play a round with J Gary, or KB, Red, etc even when I was a struggling am. The way we are set up now, it is almost pompous to a degree. I think we need to welcome the new players and I think it is important that we don't keep playing the monthlies with the same 4 people in our group. I'd like to be able to play a round with the ams. This is not the PDGA. It iS LOCAL!!! Lets let everyone have a chance to play with everyone.

Mixing the groups could work at the Moraine Monthly, but that concept would not work at Deer Lakes or Knob Hill because the amateur and open divisions play different tees.

The way we are set up now, it is almost pompous to a degree.

The PDGA and most local clubs organize groups by division or skill level. Nothing pompous about that. Personally speaking, I know I moved up to open (well before I was ready) simply because I wanted to play with the better players to observe/learn their style/techniques and simply improve my overall game.

Dec 08 2008, 11:34 AM
perhaps we should all play the same tees at all the monthlies?? If we did that, we could keep player ratings for all of the monthlies like I did for some of the Moraine scores last year.

By doing this, we could establish all of our local players ratings, and perhaps use these ratings to establish a local-tour??

Also, another good way to get some more players might be to make 1 monthly each a month, a PDGA C-tier event? Would perhaps attract some out-of-towners, and would give us locals, more PDGA events to play in. Giving some players more of a reason to join the PDGA?

The observations and suggestions from Chris are all very good ones and I agree with them completely except for paying amateurs with cash. That is simply the biggest incentive for sandbagging possible. The competitive system at many disc golf clubs around the country have been ruined when amateurs were paid in cash.

I haven't played as an amateur since 2002. My skill level, desire to get better, desire to play with better players, and pride have all played in my personal decision to play in professional divisions in that time, even if I know it takes nearly flawless play from me to have a shot at last cash.

But offer me a cash payout and I wouldn't think twice about playing amateur and wouldn't feel any shame doing it. Think about what a flawed system you would have when a 950-rated player plays amateur to win cash. Don't be surprised if other 920-960 players who typically play Open also move down. That alone right there should convince you that this would not be a wise move.

sandalbagger
Dec 08 2008, 02:20 PM
I understand the sandbagging part, but for the most part, our club doesn't have that kind of problem.

What I see more often than not, is advanced level players playing open, or intermediates, playing advanced in our events. Our biggest problem is the lack of an advanced division at our monthlies. We have many advanced players, but more often than not, a few of them will try to play pro, which sometimes eliminates the advanced field all together.

I'm not sure how a money payout would affect the divisional play, but perhaps it would encourage more competition in the advanced and intermediate fields?

We have a decent pro field as is, and maybe we would encourage a larger am field with the possibility of cash payout.

sandalbagger
Dec 08 2008, 02:32 PM
as for pro players moving down, I think it would be ok. We have a decent core of open players. Some could definitely play am if they wanted to, but knowing the people in the club, I would think they have to much self-pride to drop to am status. Or if they did drop to am status and consistently won every monthly, I would think that they would move up to try Open. And if they didn't, us yinzers sure would make him feel bad about beating up on the ams.

But yes you are right, sandbagging does become an issue, but I think it would not be a problem with our monthlies. I think that the biggest problem would be the intermediates and advanced divisions. But even then, I think most people that come to play in our events definitely have a sense of pride and would not play in a division just because they know they would win cash. And even if they did, everyone has a right to play in a division that they feel like they have a legitimate chance to win in.

And you would still have people who would take 100% payout in discs rather than a 75% cash payout.

But I really think the most important thing is to get the groups as mixed as possible with pros and ams. I have played a lot of monthlies in the last year and have only got to play with a small handfull of people. There are quite a few people that I have never even got to play a round with, let alone even see them throw a shot. I know when I was starting, it was playing the rounds with the pros that I learned the most, and I miss the PDGA days when you might be in a group with a women, a master, and a kid, etc. Nowadays we are stuck in our division with no way of getting to know the people in the other divisions. I would never have become so motivated had I not gotten to play with Elaine King, Juliana Korver, Brad Schick, Cam Todd, Ron Russell, and any others when I was an amateur player.

Now I understand that it can be distracting to a pro playing for money when you have a newbie or a kid in your group. Maybe even more frustrat8ing when that newbie is beating you during the round. But for our monthlies, we need to start playing with everyone. The best way to strengthen our club is to get to know our club and make them feel included. The best way to do that is to play a round of golf with them. I'm sure they would appreciate it, and I know it would be nice to get to play a round with these people that I only get to see in the parking lot.

I 100% agree about the mixed field idea. All names of competitiors should be thrown in a hat and randomly pulled to form a card. This past year for myself is a little different than Chris because I've played both Advanced and Open but still I've only played with a handful of different players.

And as for the Am pay out, something different should be considered. Alanna and I have played almost every Deer Lakes and Moraine monthlies this year. That's quite a few discs Alanna has won. And to my knowledge she doesn't use any of them. Either they are too heavy or she just grabs whatever hoping she can sell them on E-bay. About a month ago she actually considered NOT going to Moraine simply because she was tired of wasting money just to win plastic. Seriously, how many Orcs and Destroyers does a player need? It might be different for a newer club member that doesn't have hundreds of discs in their basement.

gotcha
Dec 08 2008, 04:37 PM
Kurt,

Alanna always has the option to play in the Open women's division, however, she might possibly be the only pro woman playing in her division. Not a problem. She would simply win her $8 cash payout and she would be grouped in with the open men. What would be ideal is if Lori did the same thing.....then you have two ladies playing for each other's cash!

Everyone,

Let's not forget that our random doubles format allows players of all skill levels the opportunity to play with one another in a competitive format. I believe that is probably one of the main reasons Knob Hill Doubles is as popular as it is.

Wise in your eyes.....my wife would have a different opinion!

But seriously, this is good discussion with several good opinions being thrown around. I can tell you that I am opposed to ams winning cash in divisional play. The only reason cash is an option at Schenley is because the weekly event is a handicap league which offers only one division. Not only that, <u>all</u> players have the option of 100% disc credit or 75% cash payout.....regardless of skillset.

As for divisional play during our monthlies, pro divisions play for cash.....am divisions play for merch.

Dec 08 2008, 05:00 PM
haven't forgot :) All I know is that PFDS league events used to always mix divisions until sometime in the mid 2000's when we started to play by divisions.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing with the pros, but at the same time, I think it is only right that we start mixing up the divisions and getting more people playing together. For the last 36 months of monthlies, I have probably only played with 12 different people. I will never get to play a round with Josh or Alanna or Corey or etc, etc, etc. I think we need to be less exclusive and allow everyone a chance to play a round with people such as you, and J Gary.

now for a PDGA event, I better not have an AM 2 master in my group!! But for the PFDS monthlies, I think it is important to get the newer players out there a chance to play with people who know the history of the sport, our courses, and whatnot. By doing so, I think we may see more newer players get more involved.

I think of players such as Sid and Dave, who are the newest "pros" in the area. I remember they started coming out as Ams, and then played a bunch of winter round with me, KB, and Matt Miao. I think it would be safe to assume that playing those rounds in their early days, with people who were not only good, but could tell them about the sport, and people they could travel to tournaments with, helped get them into the sport and our club. it is important to have more interaction with that level of player. And those AM players who will never be at the pro ability, I think it is important that we keep them involved in the sport and our club. Some players will never be pro level players, and I think some of them get discouraged when they get put in a group with no chance of being able to play with the people they have played golf with for 5+ years. That's why I think we need to have mixed groups. I like Kurt's idea of drawing from a hat. It needs to be totally random. Hell we might all make some better friends with these people that have been coming to and supporting our events over the years.

I'm not sure this will encourage more people, but it's worth a shot.

I really think that the $1 division would be beneficial to our monthlies as well. You wouldn't get paid out any money, but at least you can come to play in the monthly and see what it is all about before you spend $10.

And as far as more membership..........

I think the most important thing that needs to be done is that our club events (monthlies, doubles, etc) should have a cap on the Ace Pot for non-PFDS members. The Ace Pots should only pay out 1/2 of the value of the actual ace pot and put a cap on it at an amount of $100.

That would encourage players to join our club. For instance when doubles ace pot gets up to $300, it would be beneficial for a player to spend the $10 yearly membership fee to have a chance of getting the $300 instead of just $100. And with the yearly membership fee, they will then have a chance at all of the ace pots for the full amount. I really think this could encourage membership more than any other means.

We also need to have rewards to new members. Most clubs out there offer a discount on tournament entry fees. Events such as the PFDO or Ironwood members should perhaps receive a $5 discount. What better way to get someone to sign up for a $10 yearly membership if they will possibly get that $10 back if they play in the Ironwood and the PFDO. This would encourage people to sign up for the PFDS as well as the chance that they may sign up for the PDGA so that they can play in the PFDO.

"As for divisional play during our monthlies, pro divisions play for cash.....am divisions play for merch. "

Yes, but does this hurt the turnout in the Am division at our monthlies? That's all I'm wondering. I'm not sure how I feel about paying out AMS, but what if our monthlies were just division 1, 2, 3? Then you could pay out all? I know those names are stupid. I'm just saying, why can't or shouldn't we pay the ams in cash?

I'm not sure how I feel about paying them out in cash, but would it attract more players? And for the record, I am undecided as to whether or not paying out the ams cash would attract more people to our monthlies? What do you all think?

There's always a plus and a minus to all ideas. The biggest minus to Ams winning cash is that we would be eliminating one major way for the PFDS to quote unquote "dump" tournament plastic.

gotcha
Dec 08 2008, 08:12 PM
All I know is that PFDS league events used to always mix divisions until sometime in the mid 2000's when we started to play by divisions.

For the record, I revived the Sunday Devotional in early 2001 and it was the divisional format like it is now for our Monthlies. I can't speak for what was going on at Schenley during that time and the secret league at Knob (aka The Challenge Ladder) doesn't count in regard to "league events". :D

I organized the Devotional because there was nothing officially going on at Knob back then and I yearn for competition. I mean, come on....I move to the 'Burgh and there's this world-class, kick-[censored] course in town with no weekly or monthly tournament going on? Heck, one of the main reasons I bought my house was because it was close to Knob Hill! Having previously lived in Texas, North Carolina and Columbus, Ohio, I was used to weekly or monthly events that would draw crowds of disc golfers! When I left Arlington, TX in late 1996, are club was averaging 48 players for our Sunday morning league! North Carolina would regularly have 70+ players in attendance for their monthlies!

Guess what? Outside random doubles events, every one of these popular weekly or monthly tournaments was comprised of divisional play with pros playing for cash and ams playing for merch. In some cases, the entry fees would vary dependent upon divisional class (i.e. Pro $10; Am $5), but most of the time the entry fee was the same. Some communities had larger open attendance, some had larger amateur attedance, but one always saw upward movement within the ranks....and cash was the carrot which attracted competitors into the pro fields. The divisional payout system works. If you begin paying cash to all divisions, the system breaks down (imo).

novice &gt; intermediate &gt; advanced &gt; pro

^ That's the order of skillset. Some players never make it to the top tier and a few will bag along the way, but player progression typically holds true to the divisional format. Most competitors get better over time and they simply desire the next level of competion or else they want to improve their game by playing/learning from better players. Of course, some players may simply realize they have too many Orcs and Destroyers and decide that's good enough of a reason to move up! ;)

What we all can agree on is that league attendance in Pittsburgh is less than desired. Can random groupings encourage overall participation with recreational players? Possibly. What about reduced entry fees for lower divisions? Possibly. I'm sure there are many other things not yet suggested or discussed. Growing participation within our club and the community will be one of the agenda topics during this Friday's club officer meeting. Let's keep the ideas coming.... :)

Correction Jerry, you resuscitated a DOA Sunday Devotional that I began in 1996 or there abouts and KB continued. It was named such because Frisbeeterians needed a place to worship. Things just ran down and stopped. We want to prevent that from happening again it seems.

Regardless, you pumped much needed life into the thing and are to be commended for it.

I think divisional play works fine, but it has become very clique-ish. I love playing with the boyz, but don't mind at all if the TD puts me on a card with a brand new player, or a rising am or anyone.

No reason why we couldn't all play from the same tees (although open players will want to play the back tees I'm sure), charge lower entry fees for adv/intermediate, offer a free introductory round for new players, have $1 CTPs or any of theses ideas.

the trick is to get more people playing and having fun.

I agree that this is a great discussion. I understand the frustration of not wanting to win more plastic but not being able to cash in an open division, but for me it was the incentive of being able to play with better players every week that made the decision to move up a very easy one.

I think we could do a little work to expand our "merch" to make sure that we are not just trying to unload old tournament plastic. We can try to get a better mix of discs that would be more useful for AMs, Rocs, Buzzz's, Sidewinders, SS Avengers etc. Additionally we could get non-disc swag like cool T-shirts, hats, PFDS minis or other fun things we can think of. I think making the prizes more enticing is a better idea than paying out cash to AMs.

Nothing says that all of the monthlies have to be run in the same way (or run the same way every month.) I think that mixing it up occasionally would be fun.

I have always been a strong believer in the division play. I also think that if you are tied of getting plastic for winning, that means you win to much in your division. If there is an event that allows me to win cash, and my rating suggests that I can play in that division, why wouldn't I? According to the rating system, Am's are 970 and below. If we use it as a guide for the monthly, there would be 4 pro's. There would be 9 advanced, and everyone else would be able to play Intermediate. If we offer cash for the advanced division, Who would step up to open? And who could blame the 935's and below from playing intermediate were there rating say's they can play if they could win cash? You have a open division for cash that anyone can play. If you give cash to any other division you have to have a guide. And all that is going to do is not allow the 4 pro's to play. When I did play am, I wanted cash instead of club stock, but all I was ever told was move up. So don't look to me for sympathy when it comes to the on going, never going to work, arguments of cash for ams. I do like the ctp suggestion. As far as everyone playing the same tee's, we did that once at the knob monthly. I wasn't there for that one.

I ran that "everyone plays white tees" monthly at Knob when Sid wasn't there. If I remember correctly, there was snow on the ground. Enough said.

Good point, Dave. Perhaps we could have "Monthly Mixers" where players are randomly mixed instead of grouped by division. Each month we could schedule a monthly tournament as a mixer and the courses could go through rotation. Being that Deer Lakes and Knob Hill use different tees for pros and ams, players will simply have to deal with that minor inconvenience when playing in a mixed group once a month.

This monthly mixer would be a good idea. At least then we would have 1 monthly where new people or ams could get a chance to play with anyone.

As for the cash payout to AMS, it was just a thought.

And for the record, I was at the brewry last night and was informed that Joe McLaughling, Zach zimmel and Jason Gibson will all be playing in the pro division this weekend at Moraine. They want a shot at the cash!!

And yes the monthlies have become very cliqueish. I really think the key is mixing divisions if we want to strengthen the core of the club.

POSTED ON THE PFDS BOARD FROM SCOTT ???

"I have a few ideas/ suggestions relating to the recent discussion on the PDGA board concerning the club. For some reason the PDGA board will not let me sign on for some reason. First off I am a amateur, I started this game in September of this year. Since then I have participated in the hunt, the turkey shoot, 3 knob hill monthlys, 2 at moraine, and about a half dozen doubles events at knob hill. I basically go to everything offered so I think I can offer an accurate depiction of what attracts new members and what is expected.

I guess first and foremost is getting the club organized. I dont mean this as a shot at the current board but there is a lot of room for improvement. I had gone to all of these events and was never even asked about becoming a PFDS member. I joined when I voted. I am still not clear on what exactly that gets me.
I know it supports the club, and that is reason enough for me but maybe not for others. I have seen mention of the retreat at moraine this weekend. I do not know if this is just for board members or all members or exactly where or what time this will all happen. I think to attract more members we just need to tap into the resources available. Post club info on the boards at the courses. I realize everyone these days has a computer but it would be nice for people who play that have no idea who we are see that the can play in tournaments and take their game to a new level. Also a easy way to get more members is by offering a discount to they monthly entry fee for members. For a $10 entry fee, charge $9 to members they will give an even $10 with the ace pot anyways. IT may only be $1 but a new member would be enticed to join since he would be even after 10 monthlies out of the 30 some offered per year.

I would also like to discuss ways to increase the number of players at the monthlies. We may get better turn out at events if a mass email was sent out reminding everyone. I do not believe offering cash to amateur divisions is the answer. That would just cause numerous problems. I like the credit. For those who have too much credit, possibly the club could come up with a catalogue of merchandise that members could order from. This would take care of excessive overhead. One way to make playing in AM divisions more enticing is prizes. CTP is a great idea. I also would like to see some kind of bag tag for the division winners. Perhaps something from Wendell August or made of pewter. Nothing extravagant just something that says PFDS and the division won. Give these out to the winners of the AM divisions. I have seen the ones people have from course championships and they are envied. Personally I would rather have some kind of trophy than plastic. The Pros dont need them, they get the cash. Format is another issue. I have gotten the chance to play with pros at the doubles at knob and also when I have played with open players when nobody else showed up to play AM. I really enjoyed this. By playing with pros I am able to learn things I would never see in Rec. Doing this at one monthly per month would be great. The idea of having one monthly per month be a PDGA C tier event is also a good idea. I am a PDGA member and would like to see more events close to home. This would also attract outlying players to our courses and possibly get them to come to other monthlies. You can charge more for these events and use them to get rid of the extra plastic through player packs and the club can bank a few bucks. These are just a few thoughts from a beginner sorry it was so long but I have a lot of ideas."

Hey Scott,
Saw your post. Thanks for speaking out. It is great to hear from fresh players in the club. I too like your ideas. You and everyone that is interested in the future of the club is invited to the monthly and the club meeting after. That is my fault that you were not asked to become a member. It's funny that I've seen you and even played with you and probably asked other people around you to join, but overlooked asking you? I hope with the new board, we can avoid this happening in the future. We will have new people on the board, and I hope that these ideas and concerns about the club can be addressed at the meeting. I'm excited about the direction of the club. I'm glad to see that you care enough to speak up. I look forward to working with you and everyone to make the PFDS the best it can be. Hope to see you at Moraine.

Scott.....you do have a lot of good ideas and thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if you are aware, but only active members of the PDGA can post on this particular discussion board. For anyone who is not a member of the Professional Disc Golf Association, I would highly encourage you to consider joining the organization.

Last year we decided to charge non-club members $1 extra for the monthly tournaments, similar to the discount idea you proprosed in your post. Unfortunately, that extra buck thingie was never really implemented and I'll be the first to take blame for not charging the fee to non-PFDSers. The reason we went with the idea of charging an extra buck instead of discounting the $10 entry fee was simple.....making change when people pay by $10s and $20s. Monthly TD's never seem to have enough fives and ones to pay out or make change. Nonetheless, I'm glad you mentioned this as it is something we should start doing to reward (and encourage) club membership. Another thing we should consider is player eligibility for our ace pots/eagle pots. Deitzel made a suggestion upthread and there has been some discussion about this topic over the past year. If we can use those monetary prizes to entice players to join and/or participate within the club, why not?

Mass email announcements is something we already do to a limited degree. I've acquired quite a few emails from golfers in the area, both PFDS members and non-members. I and other board officers regularly send out email announcements regarding upcoming events (I'll be sending one out today regarding the Moraine Monthly this Saturday). During the last club officer meeting (October), we all agreed the need to improve upon this form of communication. One of the ideas is to enhance the club's web site by offering a way for people to provide us with their email address for future announcements. The way I envision it, a person would see a link on the web site that says something like "Click here to receive the PFDS eNewsletter and club announcements". Interested parties could then simply provide us their email address to receive weekly tournament announcements, reminders, info regarding volunteer workdays, etc. By the way, anyone reading this who want's to be added to my email distribution list can send their request to my email: [email protected]

Another idea we discussed during our October meeting was a creating a current membership list on our website. The list would include both lifetime members as well as yearly dues paying members. What would be cool is if one could click on an individual's name on the list to obtain contact information for that individual (email, phone, etc). Of course, due to concerns over privacy, personal contact information would only be provided with each members consent.

Your merchandise catalogue is an interesting idea. As mentioned previously upthread, improving our selection of disc golf merchandise is needed. Maybe we could use someone like Marshall Street as our online catalogue for PFDS members. For example, amateurs who have earned enough merch credit could choose an item from an online retailer and the club would simply remit the payment on behalf of the player. Interesting idea....

Bag tags. This is something that's been discussed for quite some time. Members should get something tangible for their annual renewals and a bag tag is probably the best choice. We used to have them in the past, but it wasn't for club membership, it was for the Pittsburgh Challenge Ladder which is now defunct. Bag tags are extremely popular throughout the disc golf community and there is no reason we shouldn't be following the trend.

Deitzel's suggestion of mixing the players for our monthly events appears to be quite popular from what I've seen posted on this thread. I've also received emails from a couple of players who are not PDGA members and cannot post on this thread, however, they wanted to inform me they have read the discussion and like the idea. As the Moraine Monthly TD, I know I'm down with mixing it up once a month and so is Sid in regard to the Knob Hill Monthly. I have called Scott McIntyre and left a message for him, asking his opinion on the subject. If I know Scott, he'll agree it is a good idea for Deer Lakes as well. Based upon the positive response I've seen, we'll have our first "Mixer" at Moraine this Saturday. Should be fun.... :)

Lastly, in regard to a C-tier every month (or every other month, etc), it sounds like a great idea. Charlotte DGC does something similar with their Points Bonanza series. The Columbus Fliers sanction several C-tier events in a series format which proves to be quite successful. The problem with Pittsburgh is......who's gonna run them? At present, we don't even have a TD to run the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open in August. Craig McCloud has stated he would assist with the PFDO as a co-TD, but we have yet to have anyone raise their hand for the duty.

All good ideas in this discussion (except for Deitzel's idea about paying the am divisions cash :o:D). Keep those ideas coming. Brainstorm! Share what you think we can do to improve disc golf in Pittsburgh! I think the newly elected Board of Directors are going to push the PFDS in the right direction and it's going to happen because of ideas and motivation from our club membership as a whole.

We are very excited about the renewed energy in our club locally, and the future of our sport globally. Hope to see you at 10 am for the Monthly club tourney and afterwards at Cabin #1 for the PFDS club meeting."

FYI......Scott McIntyre contacted me and agreed with the concept, stating he thought it was a good idea which should hopefully increase player participation. That said, the monthly mixer is now a reality with the first one being tomorrow at Moraine! This weekend we will begin scheduling the 2009 PFDS Event Calendar which will include not only our local league and monthly events, but regional PDGA events as well. 2009 is going to be a good year.... :)

Tim Wright?? That must be a typo.

Just got the Vibram Open DVD, there's a sweet putt from me and a really nice putt from Timmy as well in the DVD. Someone let him know about it if you see him.

So did Sid play different tees???

Just kidding, I shot just about as bad down here this weekend.

Scratch the metal detector. I went over during lunch today and met up with Chris and Lori. Chris dug in there through all of the water and mud and found it. It was like frisbee dog on a mole! I was wondering who taught who. See everyone at tomorrows monthy. I heard that fun was guaranteed! Where else can you get guaranteed fun for only $10?

Siddy Boy is committed elsewhere this weekend, thus, I'll be running the Knob Hill Monthly on Saturday, November 5. White tees for everyone.....mixer format. And it's supposed to be a nice fall day.

Hope to see y'all there.
