Are there any good courses in West Virginia that are still playable? I'm going to be up there in early Jan. for a couple days.

The obvious choice would be Paw Paw - I'm pretty sure its open year round and will play tough all year round (won't be any easier without full foliage). Otherwise Fairmont, WV has a sweet course at Seth Burton Memorial.

on the other side of the state rotary park in huntington is good. johnny sias' private course outside of huntington is also supposed to be very good.

I'm going to be flying into Charleston and then driving out to Craigsville. How far is it from Charleston to Huntington, and who do I need to contact for the private course?

Johnny Sias' course, Lucky 8, is excellent and one of the most difficult courses that I've ever played. Johnny is a very friendly host!

Just looked up Craigsville and it's around half an hour away from Hico, WV where the Songer Whitewater's disc golf course is located. it's a fun course that I'd recommend checking out. Other guys are right about Huntington's Rotary Park and Fairmont's Seth Burton. Johnny's Lucky 8 course is very tough, but well worth the visit. He also has a new 9 basket course 'Lazy 8' which I haven't played yet. My friend Johnny would be more than happy to show you around, if he's not doing anything or working.

Seth Burton in Fairmont WV would be 2 hours from both Charleston & Craigsville. It also has a new 9 basket course thru the woods 'Orange Crush' which is a different monster and much more challenging than the original 18 basket course around the park since it's all played thru the woods.

I love Paw Paw and go there every year for the tourney, but it'd be a bit out of way from where you're at, unless you plan on staying up in that area and spend the whole day or two since there's two super-tough and long courses, each of which would take at least 2 hours or more to play.

All of these courses mentioned above are listed in the PDGA's course directory, as well as Johnny Sias contact # if needed. He'd appreciate it if anyone can contact him first and let him know that they're coming. Huntington/Barboursville/Lavalette are all around an hour from Charleston.

Oh...and there's a couple of courses up here around my area if you ever plan on coming up this way. I would suggest checking out the Forked Run State Park in Reedsville OH which is just half an hour away from Parkersburg & has dual tees and it's a 21 basket course. There's others nearby but most are 9 basket courses, such as the one in Marietta OH, Mountwood Monster at Parkersburg and one in Ripley WV, but us locals would play from 2nd set of alternate tees at all these 9 basket courses, technically making them 18 baskets courses. If you're heading up to Fairmont, you'd be driving thru Clarksburg which has a 9 basket course as well.

Good luck and have a safe trip & fun while you're up in WV. PM me if you like and I could give you my father's # to call. Depending on which days you're able to play, we'd be more than happy to show you around if we could.

I got a reply email from Johnny Sias and it looks like I'll be able to go out and play his new course. He'll probably be joining in after he gets off work. The only day that I have to play disc golf is on the 2nd and that's only after 2pm. Unless I can convince work to let me stay another night (which I think would be wise since I have to investigate a 190 acre plywood mill). If I can get another day up there I'll probably head north to maybe Seth Burton or Paw Paw. Jestermeister - I'll send you a PM as soon as I find out how long I can stay up there.

P.S. Johnny Sias' course looks amazingly fun and unbelievably technical. I've been playing mostly in Texas and have very few courses that can challenge you the way his probably does.
