Just wanted to thank all of the Team Bryan McClain Members for playing some really great golf this weekend. We had a very strong team and just missed the finals by a match. The best part of the whole weekend was beating Round Rock 1 and sweeping Team Hill Country 9-0. :D This was my first teams and I cannot wait till next years. :) TEAM BRYAN McCLAIN KICKED YOU KNOW WHAT!!! ;)

Thanks and well done, McClain!! Thanks for stepping up as captain, Scott, Stacy for the goodie bags, Ernie for the laughs, nyuggah and everyone else for a great time! Hell of an opening for a sweet course and a great club...I'll be down for some minis after the new year. Happy Holidays, and see you guys soon.

It was a great weekend in Wimberley Texas for the 2007 Texas Teams Championships. Bryan McClain Park sent a team to compete this year as San Antonios first ever team to compete at Texas Teams. The Alamo City is surely proud of Team Bryan McClains 3rd place finish in Established Division. The results are below.

Day One
McClain 4
Round Rock 3

McClain 4
Ingleside 3

McClain 4
Crowley 4

McClain 5
Twin Parks Hill 3

McClain Wins Pool B (the hardest pool w/ 3 of teams advancing to the final 8)

Day Two
In the Quarterfinals McClain played Team Hill Country and had only the 2nd skunk ever in Texas Teams play.
McClain 9
Team Hill Country 0

In the Semifinals McClain played its new rival Crowley and in a hotly contested match lost.
Crowley 4
McClain 3

By virtue of winning more matches plus advancing out of the hardest pool, McClain takes 3rd at Texas Teams.

Overall Record 4-1-1

Team Members
Pro 1 - Orlando Pereida
Pro 2 - Phil Morgan
Advanced 1 - Raymond Pereida
Advanced 2 - Jason Hansen
Intermediate 1 - Scott Hougland
Intermediate 2 - Geoffrey Mysorski
Advanced Women - Stacey "the dominator" Pereida (went 5-0 this weekend)
Swing (Advanced Masters) - Paul Taylor
Pro Master - Ernie "wing master" Hernandez

Id like to personally thank everyone who played. I had a blast this weekend and it was by far the most fun competition Ive played in to date. Everyone stepped up played great golf. Im extremely proud that we took home a 3rd place finish and bested some of the top teams in the state.

Id also like to thank everyone who has put in time at McClain helping install the course, clear it out for play, and keeping it groomed. Without the course, there would be no team. Finally Id like to thank our sponsors who helped us get there, made us look good, and gave us the energy to last all day.

Should we put up the current Ace Pot money or just the money collected this Saturday if there is an Ace? I mean we are going to have Ace Runs all over the place.

Just wanted to share something with all of you:

I went out to McClain today to play some and clean some. I pulled up at the same time as another gentleman and asked him how he was and if he played Disc Golf. He answered no and said the park was named after his son Bryan McClain. I introduced myself and told him about how we sent Team Bryan McClain to the TX Teams Tourney and how we are going to have the 1st Annual Bryan McClain Open sometime next year. He was so happy to hear all this and to see that the park was being used. It has been 8 years since the bonfire accident and he could not beleive it had been that long ago. He gave me his number and wants to be kept updated with everything we are doing at McClain. When he was leaving he said I knew I came to the park for something.............. "to meet you". A really nice man I had the pleasure of meeting. :)

Short (Birdiefest) Layout:
1) Play from the lower box
2) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway between the trees
3) Tee is marked with orange flags, across the creek
4) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway on the right
5) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway a ways on the way left hand side ... this shot is sweet!
6) Same as always
7) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway in the middle .. definate ace run.
8) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway on the right
9) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway in the middle
10) Tee is marked with orange flags, a ways up the fairway on the left
11) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway
12) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway between the tress ... can you say skip ace or scooby flick ace?
13) Tee is marked with orange flags, way up the fairway by the bush, still a 300+ ft shot but definately a birdie can be had
14) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway on the right
15) Tee is marked with orange flags, up the fairway on the right behind the yuccas
16) Same as always
17) Tee is marked with orange flags, on the left path, behind a bush. Trees on the left, right, and bushes low frame this shot nice!
18) Tee is marked with orange flags, acroos the creek in the normal area of the "walk of same". If you haven't hit one by now this could be your chance.

Happy Turkey Day :D

Hello everyone. It is about time for us to start having some workdays out at area courses that need help. Three of us worked on digging some steps on Hole #5 yesterday that came out pretty good. We were thinking of putting some flat stones on the steps to help walk up that steep hill. I know it was pretty slippery at Saturdays Mini that's why we did this before someone gets hurt. I think we should schedule a workday after the Holidays and have it on a Saturday instead of the mini. If you play McClain, let me know what you think of the steps on Hole 5 and how we can improve them so they don't wash away.

Anyone know what the hot round in doubles was on Sunday?

Just wanted to say that Jimbob & I played doubles yesterday and it was the first time I had played McClain in a long time and wanted to give props to Scott, Bird, Stacey & the rest of the crew... That course looked awesome!!! Jimbob and I were partners and shot 1 up not too bad... but had a great time!!!

Thanks for all the hard work guys, I think this course is definitely ready for some tourneys...

GOOD JOB!!

Also, good job on those stairs on hole 5, Bird... :cool:that is the first time I have ever enjoyed playing that hole...

Thanks for that...

Thanks Laura ... that mean a lot. On that note ... its about time to get that course looking even better ....
McCLAIN WORKDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion there are a few holes that, if we work on them for a few hours, we can make a huge difference.

First ... Holes 2 & 3. Hole 2 is still a mess in my book. We need to cut down all of that ragweed or whatever has sprouted up there on both sides of the fairway. I think if the city could meet us out there with a brush mower that could be knocked out in less than 2 hours. We'd just need to haul it off after it was cut down. The area between holes 2 & 3 should cleared so that only the trees are left and the weeds are cut out. Same thing goes for the right side of hole 3.

Secondly, holes 14 & 15. 14 has the same problems as holes 2 & 3. A crap load of ragweed that needs to be removed. Also there is a bunch of dead brush that needs to be cleared from the right side of this hole. Speaking of brush, hole 15 needs to have that HUGE brush pile removed. We'll need the city do that. It shouldn't be too difficult for them since it is right on the greenbelt area with the powerlines. We just need to coordinate with them. I'll bet we could just haul all of the crap from 14 and 15 to one spot for them to retrieve.

Next, hole 5. While it is dry we need to address the drainage issue on this hole. There are giant dead trees all in front of the "wall" that gaurds the basket. At a minimum the dead trees to the left and right of the area directly in front of the basket need to be removed. I'll bring my chainsaw out during the workday (and likely at least 2 other people that love to use chainsaws) and cut thos up and remove them. This will help with the colelction of stagent water there and that nasty smell that occured there in the summer. In addition hole 5 has a lot of dead brush that needs to be removed from both side of the fairway.

Lastly, the trash. I'm as green a person as anybody and support all recycling efforts, but in typical San Antonio city fashion they've put recylcing containers at the school near the course and then failed to maintain them. As a ersult they have overflowed and with the recent winds, the trash has blown all over the place, including on the course. We need to get those community service workers out there to just walk the course and pick up trash.

I propose that January 19th be a McClain workday. Instead of playing the mini, let's all pitch in to get this course ready for the summer. We need to the course in prime shape now so that mowing and maintenance is easy during the summer months.

Stacey - Since you have been sooooooooo good ( :D) at working with the city, can you contact them to see if they can provide some workers for this day for trash removal duty? Also, see if they are game for hauling brsuh away and if they can provide us with a brush mower. Also I think we need to sit down with them to work over some sort of agreement since we are doing so much work out there they need to know how much we are doing are how much time it takes.

I don't think he is talking about cutting trees down but removing debris from the creek. We played on Monday and there are huge trunks that are stacked up that need to be cut up and removed. The Huge Oak tree on #5 is still alive it just got pushed over by the floods (It Stays). I don't think it is necessary to call Scott S., we won't be cutting down any trees.

I've crunched the numbers for McClain based on the last 2 weeks of scores (I'll inout the rest when I have time) and have come up with individual local player ratings, a course rating (SSA) and hole by hole rankings from easiest to hardest for pros and ams. Interesting info! The course SSA or Scratch Scoring Average is what a 1000 rated or scratch player would shoot at the course. The SSA for McClain is 55.08. That means a 1000 rated player would average 1 over at McClain. Below is a hole by hole breakdown of holes from easiest to hardest for pros and ams. Enjoy!

I have tracked down the contacts at a couple of companys and will be asking for contributions towards bridges. I would like to put together a proposal so we can paint a clear picture for what is needed. The main focus is hole 18/9 with a second and third consideration for holes 3 and 16. I think those are the most needed to start off. Hole 5 will take a lot of consideration on the best design so I think it's a better follow on project. Hope everyone is having a blast out there, I hope to be back out soon.

Scott left him at McClain on the picnic table and one of the 3rd Coasters scooped him up. I swear it was deja-vu the way he was so excited about having him (same as previous owners). We let him know the about the "bad luck" he brings and that he can return him anytime back to the spot where he took him. I have a feeling we will see the wooden man again. The course is looking good and I just wanted to say that I appreciate everyones help on cleaning the course. I think that EVERYONE should STOP cutting or trimming branches on the course. I walked McClain this morning with Stacey and Jerry to pick up trash and I noticed some of the fairways becoming really wide because of all the trimming. McClain was designed to be a challenging but fun course and we should not alter that design. Let's let this course takes it's own path by just playing it. PLEASE.....NO MORE TRIMMING OF ANYTHING!!! Thanks.

The trimming I did was for the health and safety of the golfers. Briars and pricker trees do nothing to add to the difficulty of the course. Not evereryone is able to park first shots. I trimmed ONE cedar tree that had branches protruding below eye level. The dead tree hanging on 12 NEEDS to be cut down and removed as well.

We all have done our own share of "trimming", myself included. I am not directing my comments to any one individual or any specific hole. I just think we all need to stop the trimming. Let's just play the course and save the work for workdays. I also agree about the tree on Hole 12...that is definetaly a hazard. I will schedule some workdays so we can take care of some safety issues before the Bud Open.

I just happened to be out there when the work crew arrived. I'll be the first to say I was a bit against us building our own bridge because of safety reasons. I know what was there before was a huge accident waiting to happen and was really unsafe. When I left the bridge was almost finished minus the handrails. It is actually really sturdy and John A. knows what he is doing. I just want to personally thank everyone who donated their money and their time to this project. You all did an outstanding job.

Stacey is out of the hospital and should be on the course kickin butt in about a month. :)

Be careful - Be Very Careful. The park police have been patroling the park. They said it is illegal to park off the pavement. That is a warning. However, they noticed all the beer cans in the trash bags and said that is a tickeable offense. Drinking is illegal in any city of San Antonio park. We need to keep it on the low down (me especially). We have trash cans in the park but if we pack it in we need to pack it out - especially evidence of illegal activities. I'll do my part if you'll do yours. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Love you guys,

Jerry

opereida
Mar 12 2008, 12:39 AM
Jerry is correct....No alcoholic beverages are allowed in San Antonio Parks. Apparently the local residents that live next door to McClain Park have complained about the vehicles driving through the park at all hours. The Chief of the Park Police went out to McClain and saw all the beer cans and bottles in the trash can. They will probably be looking to bust someone at McClain so please DO NOT leave any illegal residue at the park. It is Disc Golfers that are leaving this stuff behind....from Rec players to local Pros. Vinnie was right about putting trash cans in the park. You promote trash dumping when you do that. I would like for us to remove all trash bags and cans that we placed on the course and put up signs that read "Pack it in, Pack it out". Let's see if that works. So please DO NOT Take any more trash cans out to McClain.....Let the city do it.

I was playing with Mike and Joel from 3rd Coast. I'd just finished up getting a birdie on 6 at McClain and was walking to hole 7 when out of no where a bald eagle snatched a bird and flew into the tree right above me. It sat, perched on a branch, with the bird in its talons ripping it open. It eat for awile before it placed the entire bird in its beak and majestically took off towards hole 5's tee off area. It was AWESOME! Then on hole 7's tee box I saw another bald eagle flying overhead. Needless to say it was very cool.

I think McClain has a new mascot ... meet Baldy the Champion Frolfer

Ok...played the mini yesterday. Beautiful weather, but where were the people?

Nothing but good thoughts about the course. It's somewhere between Cat Hollow and WilCo in terms of toughness and feel. Well done Shawn, Wayne, and everyone else involved.

#5 is very cool. Has anyone reached the green on the drive yet? Or even 2'd it?

And a notice, if anyone finds Kat's yellow HFDS mini (has her name and #21604 on the bottom), please let me know. She thinks she lost it on 14 or 15, but when we back to look for it, we didn't see it.

It has been 2'd. Bird (Olando P) usually puts a buzz right on the edge of the creek for a look at 2.

Course SSA is 54.02 based on the numbers to date.

Hardest hole is 13 and the 2nd hardest is 10. Both have a hole SSA of over 4. 15 and 5 are tied for the 3rd hardest holes with a hole SSA of 3.87.

Hole 1 is the easiest.

I'll bet most of the people where at Red Rock this weekend. That is a popular tourney for San Antonians.

That's why both are par 4's. :)

I was 2 down through 7 (got 4 and 6) and then had a case of missing fairway syndrome (4, 4, 6, 4). Ended up at 59. Would have been 58 if I had looked behind 17's basket - ran a jumpputt into the water and played it OB.

What is the rule on the water in the creek?

Mad props to JimBob and Bill K. The benches rock! :D I'll be out at the course on Wednesday so if any of them need to be moved (I don't think they all got put out) I'll place them then.

Next order of business ...
Does anyone own a trencher? I am concerned about hole 2's drainage situation. There is a creek on the left of the hole that just stops half way down the fairway. It then starts again behind the basket. This area is prone to flooding when water is high becuase the water reaches the end of the creek and then just sits at the basket. With a trencher we could easily extend the creek another 150 feet in a few hours.

Thanks to each card for taking a spray paint can and marking the stumps as they played. That's alot of orange spots. Juano Flores donated his $30.00 winnings back to the club. I sent him home with a Membership and put the other $20.00 into the Ace Pot.

Ace Pot $77.00

Thanks Scott.

I spoke with SAPAR today about the status of the stump grinding. Supposedly the contractor started grinding them yeterday. I'll believe it when I see it, which will be tomorrow. After they are finished with the stumps, the regular mowing schedule will begin. :)

I was not able to make it out to McClain because I had to change the water pump on the Jeep. My sources tell me the stump grinding contractor has completed Holes 1-14. That must be one mean stump grinder. I know there are a couple of holes out there that need to be mowed. Please be patient as these tasks are being completed. Next up on my request list for SAPAR......Brush pile removal. I want McClain to look awesome for the San Antonio Bud Open.

You mean I won't have to watch where I walk. It won't be the same waiting for you to trip on some hole Bird, but I am sure it looks good.

Stacy!! Good luck this weekend!!!! I want to hear that you opened up a big ole can of whoop a** out there! See you guys next week.

I'm finally back to run the Saturday McClain Mini. Ace Pot is up to $112.00 and don't forget club members get all the Ace Pot money if hit and non-members only get that days pot. There are only 11 Bag Tags left so if you want to join SADC bring an extra $10.00. I will also have discs with the SADC Logo for sale at the minis, $7.00-$9.00. See everyone tomorrow. :)

What great weather for a Saturday morning mini. We skipped hole #2 because they did not mow the fairway wide enough. I requested that the mowing contractor contact me next time they mow so I can meet them out there and show them what a fairway is. Other than a couple of holes not being mowed correctly, the course looks awesome without all those stumps. Thanks to everyone who showed up.

Ace Pot $122.00

I'd request that they keep hole 2 up to the trees mowed as is. It creates a nice fairway look, then after the trees it can be widened to its normal length.

Hole 13 looks great with a partial mowed green belt.

Stacey and I met with SAPAR and the Mowing Contractor Field Supervisor today. We walked through some of the areas that weren't correctly mowed last time and now they understand. We only played the front nine and walked 18's fairway. This is the best shape I have seen the course in. I would go play the mini this Saturday if I were you. ;) The contract reads McClain must be mowed every 17 days. I hope that is soon enough. We also told them about the SA Bud Open and requested if they could mow sometime the week of the tournament. He didn't think that would be a problem but could not make that call. Stacey called CPS about mowing the beltway where the power lines run and it is scheduled to be mowed the 1st or 2nd week in June.

I'm sure everyone has noticed the damage caused to some baskets and tee signs. Well today when we finished the round we saw that someone had removed all club info from the course map board and threw all papers and tacks all over the place. I am going to purchase a padlock and make keys for all Board Members. I hope this was a kid and not a Disc Golfer. :( There are so many kids walking through McClain from school. Let me catch em!!!

Another note....If you are playing McClain, please pick up any trash you see on the course and throw rocks off the fairways as you play. Thanks.

Resent or resemble?

J/K Randall.

I wish there were more teens as dependable and respectful as you.

At the same time I wish more people of my generation would acknowledge that there are quite a few that are as dependable and respectful.

Nuff of that, I still be razzing you anyway! :D

Thanks for taking care of the mini yesterday Scott. Do we want to rotate TD duties?

BTW, posting that frigging 86 wasnt necessary. I am now convinced that if I'm handed a round piece of plastic I could find the only tree in a desert!

I sucked!

I spent more time in the woods than Smokey the Bear!

But I enjoyed it! :D

I'll be out on the course this weekend doing trash clean up. Either after the mini or on Sunday I'll be walking the course hole by hole and picking up trash. If you want to help feel free to come on out or do some trash clean up on your own. :D

Thanks!
