How much of your 30 seconds do you use before you putt in competition?

I notice quite a bit of variance in putting time among the good putters I know so I am curious what you guys do.

i think you may be over-estimating the time people take to putt. i fit pretty well into the third category, but i doubt i ever take 20 seconds. it seems like i take a while, but it's only maybe 10 seconds... and people consider me slow.

Stroke is useful as it can be used as both a noun and a verb. How would you describe the process of throws being added to your score? "Curtis you've already been warned, this time we're going to have to throw you."--this doesn't have the same ring as being "stroked". :D

I said 20 seconds max. In other words, if you are putting through a gap in a tree on uneven footing with 20mph swirling winds you may take 20 seconds, otherwise its closer to 10.

I'm in the 5 second range.. although I'm not exactly the world's greatest putter. I could definitely improve my accuracy by taking just a bit more time and it's something I've been working on. On the flip side, I've seen guys on the course that take an eternity to putt and the end result isn't any better than my shots.

"Curtis you've already been warned, this time we're going to have to penalize you."

It's not about time, it's about focusing on the basket, seeing an imaginary line that will put the disc in the basket and then throwing it on that line. If I'm inside 30 feet it's usually about 5 seconds, outside of 30 I have to wait till I see the line and know that I am ready.

well said sandalbagger, that's just about what I do

I would have to agree with sandalbagger as well. It is not about time, it is about focus. Once you see your line, focus, feel the putt and then putt, it will generally take between 10 to 20 seconds. A lot of times you will see people move through their putt and they seem to take less time than the stationary putter, but that is only your mind fooling you. That pumping action convinces your mind they are doing something.

That is except for the constant pumper. I have seen guys that will line up, pump, pump, pump, pump, pump, then do it again, consider putting and then sometimes restart the whole process.......

It is my disc and I'll pump it as long as I want. :o

It's the full strength practice drives that I like.

If you do it right, you can get the whole card to take a step down the fairway.

ive moved to the 3-5 pump then putt in order to focus. it has helped me, but at times its counter productive though, because the impatient people are tricked on the 3rd or 4th pump and i see or hear them take a step towards the basket, thus diverting my focus.

I was surprised when I actually started counting how long it takes me to putt, and I have a very deliberate routine. In a tournement round I was taking a bit of ribbing from a 16 year old about how long it took me to putt. He wasn't trying to work me or anything, he was just making a comment. I then told him I was well within my 30 seconds and if he had anything else to say about it I would start using all 30 seconds. Anyway, long story short... 30 seconds is a long time. I take about 18-20 seconds when I'm really trying to focus and only about 10 sec if im inside 20 feet.

I use the same routine whether I am 50' out or 10' out. I would estimate somewhere around 10-15 seconds once I take my stance.

I've been over thirty once or twice - tricky footing, distractions on the course that are outside of my control, situations that everyone understands and no one is upset that it takes a bit of time. Other than that rare circumstance, I'm under twenty seconds guarenteed.

Unless there are 20+mph winds it takes me less than 10 seconds...

I will always take a moment to measure the slope of the ground and adjust so i'm level and balanced, to make sure my grip is solid, and to take notice of the wind speed and direction as well as any elevation change. Then I focus on the distance and point i'll need to connect with and what the ideal putt will feel like. Then I take a slow, deep breath and upon completing the exhale I snap forward and follow through. Takes about 10 seconds or less usually
