Just starting a thread for this since I'm sure there will be a lot of talk about it over the next few months/years. Post away :D
Check out www.sanantonio.gov (http://www.sanantonio.gov) for the results of the town hall meetings. Interesting stuff.

The next round of meeting set for December have been set. The Jewish Community Center has set a date of December 11, 2007 for round 2.
I think again that we need to be out in force for this meeting. We had a good turnout last time, but lets double our effort this time. We need to educate the community about disc golf.

I dont know if you noticed the citizen comments, but John Houck wrote in.
I wonder if he'd be willing to go to a meeting.
If only we were going to see him anytime soon, we could ask him.

John and I have been talking back and forth via email about this for a couple of weeks now. He had sent a letter to Scott Stoker and also to the design/archietic(sp) firm. Minella talked to him the other day also. I don't know what that was about or if it was even about Voelker, but Minella has the inside scoop since he is on the Park and Rec Board now.
See everybody this weekend.

The City of San Antonio is planning the next Community Meeting for the evening of Wednesday, December 12th. Site analysis information will be shared as well as an opportunity for feedback and community input. Citywide Public Involvement is important to this master planning process.

In my past experiences, when a new idea for park use was introduced, it was critical in the planning stages to see how it would co-exist with other activities (existing or new). For example, let's just say, disc golf. We all know it can work with just about anything, except maybe an archery range, off road racing or paintball. When talking with the planners, the city and other special interest groups make it a point that disc golf compliments the other interests. I believe that if we speak about all that can happen at Voelker then it would give disc golf an even greater chance of existing.
Just got word that the Community Meeting for Dec. 12th has changed locations to Churchill High School (12049 Blanco Rd.) at 6:30 p.m.

dont forget about meeting Wed. night the 12th 6:30
Tonight's meeting looked to be a success. After the breakdown to smaller groups, the proposed plans, overall, seemed to have a 'passive recreational/nature" theme.
I noticed on some of the maps, DISC GOLF was written in bold! I did hear one of the Landscape Architects mention discgolf (as an example) during his presentation as a possible activity for the park.
Thanks to Paul, Brian, Jimbob and Jayson for representing!!
Don't forget, this Saturday is a public walkthrough of the park. You can go anytime from 9 a.m. to noon. It is easier to park at (JCC) Jewish Community Center and walk down. Hope to see you there.

Last night's meeting was a SUCCESS. Discgolf made it to the "Conceptual" Plan. There was not any negative reaction when announced compared to organized sports such as football, soccer, baseball etc.
It is not over yet. If you have the opportunity to attend the next meetings, then PLEASE do so.

I talked with Steve last night before I left to get the feel of just where the disc golf is going to be. He said that with their research and what they know about it, it will fit in several different places. I then asked him what WE could do, we as a disc golf community, to help him and the design team. He said that after approval from the powers to be, he would be getting with us to walk the land and work on the concept. He asked many questions that he did not know, especially about what type of land, how much, what geometric configuration (ie..linear, L-shaped, square, rectangle) parcels of land. I told him that this was flexable and work would be with what was proposed to be given to the course. He asked about length, width, trees, scrub, grass, natural vs concrete tees. When we were talking about design, John Houck came up and he had done some research on him and was impressed.
I came away from the meeting feeling good about the park and other possibilities. It is nice to have the "what is disc golf?' question asked and then throw them the carrot and watch them want more.
I also met a lady last night who was one of the main people responsible procurring the NANI FALCONE Park, library and fire station that are across the street. She told me about NANI and what he was like and how much he would be enjoying the park and the kids that come out. He was a man of great knowledge, education, and love for kids.
All in all, a very good night.
More to come......

Community Meeting April 30th
6:30 p.m.
JCC 12500 NW Military
I think this will be the final presentation. The designers will be presenting to the parks board to get our blessing before taking it to council.
One thing of note, Mayor Hardberger wants the park open from time to time for the public. Hopefully, on April 30th we will see exactly where the course will go and we can start walking the areas if they are accessible.
Again, I want to thank everyone who has participated in the meetings or have emailed the city about getting a course in.

Additional information regarding these meetings and other events may be found at the Voelcker events calendar at http://voelckerparksa.com/home/index.php?option=com_jcalpro&Itemid=49.
Please join us for an event at Voelcker Park on Saturday, May 3rd. Janis Merritt from the Parks and Recreation Natural Areas staff will be offering guided nature hikes. The guided hikes are limited to the first 15 guests, however everyone is welcome to attend for self-guided tours from 9:00 a.m. to noon. In addition, the Parks and Recreation Department will be giving away one gallon trees to the first 100 guests.

Tonight the Park Board formally approved the master plan. I asked one of the architects about the disc golf course and he said it was still in the plans. However, the presentation will not show exactly where the course will be for now. Anyone who is planning on attending the meeting on Wednesday will need to probe the question either before, during or after to hopefully get them to commit to a specific location in the park.
On a seperate note; Scott Stover, Park Projects Manager will be leaving the city to take a similar position with TPWD. His last day will be May 9th.

Thanks Laura and Jimbob for joing me at the meeting. It looks as if Voelker DG course is a go. Jimbob asked the question and made the statement of where we thought the location might be best suited for all involved and the designer was receptive to it and said that this was in the master plan. details have to be worked out, but we are moving forward.
Thanks to all that have been involved with this during all of the planning meetings. Without the support of you actually being there in the mass numbers that we showed up in, it would not have happened.

The meeting tonight was about the 1st phase of the park to be completed. They are going to be finishing the studies on enviromental impact this summer and start the process of completing 2 of the walking trails along with the parking lots for two of the three spots. This phase will be done in 2 parts with phase 1A being completed by January of 09 and the park opening for the public at that time. Phase 1B will begin in October of 08 and be completed by June of 09. I do not remember all the details, but that is the jest of it. Some fireworks did happen between a lady and the rest of the group about some grassland restoration. If she would have made her point and then been quiet, she would have been listened to, but she had to keep repeating herself and that got the majority against her. The final straw that caused her to finally be quiet was the applause that someone else received and drowned her out.
As for DG....I talked to Steve about this after the meeting. i asked about the process of the disc golf course and he said that DG is in the master plan and that it is a good fit for the park in that it can work with all of the exiting projects. We talked about the location and where it would fit the best. He is looking at the south field to be able to wind in and out of the trees and open fields. I talked about the north field and how it could also benifit the JCC which is right there at the norhtern edge of the park. He said YEA, then we could also use the existing sigh lines and weave in and out of the brush, open fields and along the walking trails.
I was a little apprehensive about the meeting and when DG was not listed in any of the slides, I became a little worried, but after talking to Steve, I have hope in this process. I asked him about what phase we could see the DG course be in and he said either the 2nd or 3rd, but he was hoping the funding would be for the 2nd phase.
Next meeting will be in August.
