In general, how do clubs see the balance of their goals/efforts? Is the emphasis for most on competitive play (fostering/sponsoring/promoting tournament play), on coordinating with local governments/parks & rec depts to build new courses and maintain existing ones, on promoting the sport through the media and outreach efforts, on fostering participation by new players through clinics and events, etc.? I realize nearly all clubs will do all or most of these in some proportion, but that proportion is what I'm trying to get a feel for.

Have you found that the people who have the most time and energy to invest tend to want to emphasize certain aspects over others? Obviously, tournament players probably have the most interest in tournament opportunities and places to play, but do you find that there's enough club participation from people with other priorities that a mix arises naturally, or do those end up being the main practical goals, with less emphasis on the others?
Have any clubs splintered along these lines, with competitive players going one way and those who would emphasize overall growth and promotion of the sport going another? Does anyone have experience with approaches that succeeded in balancing these different (albeit complimentary) priorities?
