Yes! We are gung ho and ready to go overboard for the USWDGC in 2009.

This is the first of many posts in which we can hopefully communicate back and forth about what Women are wanting for this event. My hopes are that you are honest about what has worked and hasnt, so we can give you an experiance that youll want to come back for. ( Both to the QCs and to other USWDGC Events in the future )

We have some great things in the mix already and had ears to the ground this year in Peoria, so we have already begun to list things that could go better, or make the experiance more worthwhile. It seems from the boards that everyone had a great time, despite the smaller than hoped for attendance.

Quad Cities has plans to BLOW THIS EVENT UP. We are having great success working with the Cities and the Park Departments, and everyone involved is eagerly anticipating your arrival! We already have high hopes this will be the best USWDGC ever, and with your feedback and our planning, ( yeah, we got some time on our hands. :D) we feel Women will have this on their schedule BEFORE '08 in Jacksonville.

Oh no, Milan is building a course for this event, more or less. I think its looking like West Lake, Camden, Middle, Richmond Hill and some others are all in the loop. The Cities are all coming on board with this, so its a pretty incredible event in the making.

QC Disc Golf Club members have been working on the Camden II course, and are doing an amazing job. Sprague had his hand in alot of the designing and its going to be a top notch course based more on technical shots than distance. It was the lure of hosting a portion of this event ( that and alot of hard work from the Milan Crew ) that brought this course off the drawing board and onto the agenda. Now Camden will have 36 holes on 2 courses, with most having multiple placements on the New Course and Long Tees and some additional pin placements on the original course.

Heres some info on the courses and Club:

The Waterford Brakel women have decided to play this instead of KC Worlds. Kelsey will make every effort to obtain leave from college and she will play pro. If there are any Am GrandMaster women who would like to have a division, Diana is willing to admit her age if you are. We are planning a scouting trip in august if anyone would like to join us. The webpage says the courses will be Camden 1 and 2, Middle Park, Prospect Park and West Lake.

Where is the information about this event? I have been asking for awhile now,. all that is up is the courses we are playing and the host hotel, other than that we have nothing!!! Come on ,. seriously, women generally plan things in advance and none of us can really make plans if we don't know WTF is going on!!! There is no registration info,no extra cirricular info, nothing! This is supposed to be a major and so far I am not impressed with the lack of info with the event only 12 weeks away. Please someone with some knowledge of what is going on throw us a bone!

Hello all, and thank you so much for your patience!

The dust is just starting to settle from our 4th annual River Cities Rumble tournament (and my family vacation with 3 adolescents ), and we're taking up where we left off to get back up to speed on this most important event.

The website is undergoing some major changes and should be up with registration shortly.

Bruce, I'm not sure where you've been sending emails, but any emails that I've received for this have been replied to on the day they were sent.

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I will respond in a timely manner.

Thanks to Dave Gentry for helping me get set up, and making my first post here on the PDGA forum.

We checked out the new Camden II on our visit through the QC, WOW! An amazing effort by all involved to bring a fully wooded course to the Quad-Cities disc golf scene. This course has generous fairways, elevation, bridges, steps and some sweet Par 4 holes that will challenge your golf mentality. A lot of work has gone into this one and it shows. Hats off to Chris Sprague and his tireless work crew for getting Camden park its second course.

Should make for a great day of disc golf for the USWDGC!

We will be in town Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 5, 6 and 7 days from now.

Can you tell us anything about the 18 hole layout at West Lake designed specifically for the tournament?

The Middle Park scorecard on your website shows red, blue and yellow. Are those tees or basket positions? Do you know which they'll be playing?

It is not so important that we practice the exact same configurations that they'll be playing for the tournament. We mostly want to see where the courses are and what they are like. It looks like there are course maps and scorecards on your websites that will be helpful.

I think the actual layout will depend on division. Most will play short tees, so Id suggest prcaticing there unless theres a Open woman along. There has been talk of an 18 hole loop, its really a matter of which holes need to go. The standard tourney 18 layout wont cut out the time required, as it still keeps the longer holes in the rotation. Standard 18 has been: 1-7, 13-21, 22 and 23 combined and then 24. Thats the best layout there, but you lose all the smaller holes on the topside of the course, so I think we may use a different one I have been working on with help.

Middle has one Tee pad, multiple positions. I personally think it will be a mixed layout, but havent been asked anything about Middle.

I know this isnt much help, try to get more info for you before the weekend after I talk with John.

24 at West Lake. Its worth it even if you dont play it during the tourney, as they only have one pin placement. Pretty sure the only women playing the longs will be Open Women. As you get to the park you will be looking for gate 4. Just inside a bit is a kiosk on the right. There are printed color scorecards, very nice. And yes, there is signage on both West Lake and Middle Park.

Chase is correct on West Lake. If not playing Open, best bet will be to play the short tees. I'm still waiting for some input from a couple of folks on the layout there, so that it's still tough, but fair without "dumbing it down", and maintaining a good flow. I'll try to get that for you by the time you arrive.

Middle has pretty decent tee signs so check those. Many of the pins are where the will be for the tournament, but a few will be moved to their shorter positions.

Ams will play Camden 1 from the White tees.

We updated the website, USWDGC09 (http://www.uswdgc09.com), last night to include more accommodation options, including hotels and camping.

bruce_brakel
Aug 07 2009, 11:01 PM
We enjoyed our time in the Quad Cities. West Lake camping is cheap and it has all the amenities. There were a couple of good hotel exits on I-80 north of Davenport near I-74 that would be conveniently located to all the courses and had lots of affordable places to eat.

Middle is two-thirds park-like, with lots of cut grass, scattered mature trees, road o.b., and parallel schule. The other holes are shorter, technical and carved out of the woods. It was a good mix. We played it first on the first day and last on the last day. We thought Middle was fine with the current basket locations, but it was longish. Hole 8 seemed pointlessly long, if that's the 900 to 1000 foot hole. We really liked hole 10 with the placement shot off the tee and upshot over the river. It was kind of strange to park a 90 foot upshot and then walk 750 feet to the basket! We walked in shifts so someone could watch the discs while the others were walking. The walk from 6 basket to 7 tee was weird. The only way we could figure out how to go, other than through the marsh, was across 3 fairway and up 2 fairway. If there is a dry route through the marsh, we didn't look for it. We liked the sledding hill hole too. It's always fun to get a big downhill throw. Middle was a good course, better than average.

Camden 1 was a lot of fun. It starts off with some open holes that include a couple of downhill drives. Then it goes into the woods. The fairways are wide enough to be fun and challenging, both. There are several holes under 200 that most women can reach for a birdie or ace, so if the ace pool is optional and Camden 1 is a course you are playing, get in. I threw some left handed drives and Diana was not complaining about it being a stupid righty course, so it must have some balance. Camden 1 was our favorite; it was the one we would have played again if we had had more time.

Camden 2 is the new course with 17 heavily wooded holes. The terrain plays up and down and across steep ravines. The front nine is long and brutal in the current basket positions, with lots of par 4s where 4 was a fine score. The back nine was a lot more fun with shorter holes and a few downhill drives to reachable basket positions. In its current condition, a lot of spotting was needed, and we did not lose any discs because we did a lot of spotting. Presumably the weedier fairways will be trimmed for USWDGC. We heard that the trickle of water at the bottom of the ravines will not be o.b. This is a sensible way to play those holes since the edge of the water is hard to define and landing in the trickle or next to it is kind of just random, whereas going to the bottom of some of the ravines is almost inevitable. Camden 2 is a really good course and will get better over time, but the front nine will kick you in sensitive parts and laugh at you while you roll around in a muddy ravine bottom in agony.

It is hard to say anything about West Lake because we played 24 and the tournament is playing 18. There are four or five holes that play along the edge of the lake and every one of them is a righty hyzer over the water that comes back to land. Most discs lost in the water are irretrievable. It gets deep fast and is not clear. The shore is lined with rocks or broken concrete which makes wading difficult. And Diana is a lefty, so those holes really weren't fun for us. For what it's worth, a local pro told us he did not like to practice the course because of all the irretrievable water holes, and he is right handed. I really think that if the course designer had run those holes in the opposite direction so that the water was always where a righty hyzer would land, no one would play the course. The water holes seriously subtract from the fun value of the course, and they force a lefty to throw shorter straight mid-range shots while a righty can throw hyzer bombs over the water.

Most of the rest of the course was a lot of fun with good elevation changes and a really good mix of holes. Parts of it were park-like and parts of it were wooded. Diana is thinking that she'll wait to find out what they are playing and what they are cutting from this course before she makes a decision to play or not play the tournament. If she's in, Kira is in and Kelsey will try to get out of school for it.

I agree with you about Middle Park. Its my least favorite of the QC courses and I rarely play there. The designer has no concept of flow, and could have used a Pros touch out there...several times. Im assuming Hole 8 will be in the middle or short position. All in all, its not a bad course and is local favorite for most.

Yes, Camden 2 will play completely different for the most part. Sprague is working on a USWDGC layout, that will more than likely soften the front side up a bit. I dont think there will be o.b. rules just for this event, but I am not sure. Most, if not all, of the creek beds have ladders and steps to get into them, and we still have some things on the list to help improve the paths in the event of bad weather. It can get slick on the trails and the stairs. The shule and greens will also be cleaned up. Nobody has been out there since the Rumble, so it tends to get a bit thick. The course will play about 10 years older when its cleaned up.

West Lake is what it is, a power course that is righty friendly. If your a left handed thrower that can only throw hyser or lacks the ability to use shot placement, it can be a long round, I agree. I do have to wonder what "local Pro" would feed you that line about not practicing there, thats funny... Might have to wonder if they are actually a Pro player. Theres not a tougher course around period. Not everything is going to be soft and frilly, and theres plenty of lefty advantage or equal advantage holes there. I am not sure which layout they will choose to use, if I have any say in it, it will be very difficult for the Pro Women.

You arent supposed to wade or swim at West Lake unless your in a designated area.. You will be ticketed by the park rangers. The key is to not throw the discs in the water. Its a tough lesson, Ive lost over 55 discs out there in 4-5 years. Its also made me a pretty good player, as you have to play smart there to score well.

If your trip factors on the decision of what holes your playing at one specific course, you may want to make back-up plans. That, to me, seems like alot to base the trip off of.

But, even without the water holes, I don't know if they would want to make the trip. The water holes were kind of the last straw, but not the only straw.

The most recent discussion I was part of regarding West Lake uses 1-7, 13-18 and 20-24 for an 18-hole layout.
This is the layout as it stands. We will put a temporary tee in on hole 13 for the Ams. It will be past the two stone walls on the dam, thus eliminating 90% of the water hazard there.

The rocks and concrete on hole 13, and hole 5 have always been treated as a casual obstacle, so that relief can be taken from them.

Hole 5 will be played from the short tee for the Ams, which effectively eliminates much of the water hazard there.

Hole 19, which has a very tight landing area, fairway, and green, has been eliminated. This will take away a dangerous water hole, and a slight flow issue.

Hope this helps.

Can we please get more info on the USWDGC on their website? There needs to be course info, course layout info, maps would be awesome! Also need addresses for courses, player meeting, player party and any other important locations. And please put it on the website. Some of us don't have time to cruise multiple sites for info and no one should be forced to join any social networking sites just for the sake of getting info and updates. Everything consolidated into one place and easy to find would be very much appreciated. You might also want to get your sponsor info up too if you want to keep them all happy. And how about a mailing address if someone wants to mail in their registration? I've heard complaining on here, complaining via email and complaining in person at Worlds. The women aren't all that hard to keep happy, but they do want their info on hand before traveling cross country and then they want bathrooms and TP when they get there! To the best of my knowledge all of this will be on site soon. To be honest, we have alot of people working very hard to try and meet your standards, and about everything that has to do with disc golf in the QCs has been included in fundraising, seeking voluteers and trying to gain large support of an event the disc companies havent really supported. We could always use more volunteers and we appreciate insight into what can be done to make the event more enjoyable for you. We have welcomed feedback from everything to courses to players packs and beyond. How its presented by some people could have been better.

First, I applaud anyone willing to TD and organize any tournament because it is a lot of work and thankless hours. Even at charity events I have been a part of, there will always be complaining. As a woman, I am excited to keep building our meager attendance. Not to generalize, but in my experience, it is of tantamount importance to to keep informed ahead of time to plan flight schedules, hotel accomodations(thank you fellow disc golfer for allowing us a great discount at a hotel near the courses), and how best to get everyone from one course to another. Kudos to you all for only allowing 3 courses for 3 days. It takes an extra half day just to see a course, and many of us can't take 2 weeks off. With that said, I have anxiously been waiting for more updates and info to make a decision. As a previous sponsor of many events, it would be wonderful to Thank the people that make it happen. I try to visit the sponsors at every event-how else to build it. There are a relatively small number of disc golf women in the PDGA yet I think we could build knowing that some events are focused on the reason we started-It's fun, and info and accomodations are planned.
Just my opinion, I have several friends that don't even have a computer, so this is a good way to relay info on responses as this is the only good way to communicate right now.

I'm very sorry about the lack of information to date, and apologize to our sponsors for not having there information up in a timely fashion on our website.

I'm not going to make excuses, but want to say that people who were supposed to have gotten these things done got bogged down in other unrelated areas, and have now backed out completely.

As the point person for this event, I accept the responsibility for these missteps, as I should have been more diligent in making sure that someone got the things done that needed to get done.

In any case, I'm working with someone new to get the website where it needs to be, and we're moving quickly to put things in order.

My good friend, and one of my collaborators in putting on this event, Tracey (TraLo) Lopez, has prepared an informational document that I've put on the ETC tab (http://www.uswdgc09.com/etc.php) on the event website. Much, if not all the info included here should all be up shortly.

Nearly all sponsors were added to the HOME page of the site (http://www.uswdgc09.com) tonight via Facebook. And, we will continue to update this page, as well.

A mail in registration is also available on the REGISTER (http://www.uswdgc09.com/register.php)page.

Maps and directions, including those I sent to Kathy Hardyman (which she was gracious enough to post) above, will be up, and all in one place shortly.

Let's cut these guys a little slack. The QC club has some tremendously large shoes to fill. Both Peoria and Huntsville spoiled the ladies by taking care of everything a player could have possibly wanted in a PDGA Major event.

Last year Huntsville raised the bar a few more notches with the amazing amount of local sponsorship they put together. The player packs, perks and payout were the best yet. Valarie earned as much money for coming in second place at Huntsville as she had earned for her first place wins at the World Championships in either K'zoo or KC (and paid less to enter!). The number of local volunteers they had helping in Huntsville was also extraordinary. For example, the amount of man hours that went into prepping the course at Hartselle alone was beyond belief.

I hope the crew in North Carolina is taking notes for 2010.

Web-site updated! Tons of info, great sponsorship page, check it out and register today!
First 65 registered (pending sizes) get a tournament huk lab dry V-collar women's shirt! Fantastic player packs!

Played West Lake on Sat. and Camden II on Sunday--those courses are going to be SWEET! C'mon out and join us.

Unfortunately no childcare this year. Hope to see that as a future option.

See you in the QC!

Sorry, there will not be any CFR plastic available with this stamp. As a club, we've been burned before with CFRs not selling, and the main disc manufacturer was not willing to press anything unique for this event to help make the disc more marketable, so we opted to not do a disc as a fund-raising option.

I'm sorry to chime in here, but are you NUTS? - How could you NOT use CFR's for the Women's equivalent of the USDGC and a PDGA Finale for the Women's NT points title?

You could have easily in the 2 years in planning gotten both INNOVA InnColor and DISCRAFT SuperColor versions of that logo, or even gotten them in the last 6 months and turned them over a couple of times to add money for the Purse.

You can't tell me or ANYONE that has dealt with Innova or Discraft that they wouldn't bend over backwards to help the fundraising efforts out with discs.

Discraft has a 50 disc minimum on SuperColor, and Innova would sell you as many or little InnColor discs as you want, as well as you could get any hotstamp(s) you wanted on over 20 models in the CFR program.

It's sad to see that you and/or the club is putting the blame on the disc manufacturers, when all you have to do is look at the LARGE Events that use CFR discs and how they HELP make the purses huge!

People WILL buy CFR's that support one of a kind Events, and if you have a logo like you do, they'll want to buy it even more as evidenced by the request you responded to.

Last year Huntsville added 9000 dollars to the purse in LARGE part thanks to CFR's according to POST 26 here:
http://www.pdga.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=29925
I really can't understand how you in this economy can raise a decent amount of cash to be added WITHOUT CFR's.

If it can be done, I'll buy the book you're writing to tell everyone else how you did it.

Having run Large and smaller Events for 14 years now, I couldn't imagine ever raising any significant cash without CFR's unless you have a rich family that LOVES Disc Golf or you won the lottery and donated to the purse.

Sorry for the rant, but it is not fair to the "main" disc manufacturers to blame them when it clearly falls on you/your club to get the job done if you are sticking your neck out there to host this Major.

That may be Bruce, but that logo would sell itself -and if they only sold 50 discs in 2 years time, they could have still added 600-1000 dollars to the purse depending on their pricing. Hell -they could give them to the Am Women as prizes if they had any left over at the end of the Event - sorry but I'm not buying that excuse.

There is NO Excuse for not having CFR's for sale for a PDGA Major, especially one trying to draw the smallest percentage of PDGA players to it, and especially when there is plenty of history that CFR's WORK as fundraisers for this Event.

Apart from your assumption that they have any right to use that artwork, Illinois history might be different from Alabama history. USWDGC history might be different from Worlds history. I'm glad CFR worked for Huntsville. The cool NASA themed artwork probably helped. Seems like Old Man spent several years trying to sell his first InnColor order for USWDGC, and was relatively cool artwork. I think chivalry still lives in the South, and that may account for some of the difference too.

I have never had much success selling CFR to Illinois players. They are less caught up in the hype. And Illinois players never cared that they had a major in Peoria. I tried reselling some USWDGC CFR the first year I was running sanctioned tournaments in Illinois. There was little interest. I think Barish bought one.

OK - artwork by ANYONE - won't sell in your area of IL - CHECK

Artwork sells in FL, GA, AZ, CA,(personally sold it) and I've seen it sell well in SC, NC, KC, MO, MI, TX, etc., etc. when playing in Events around the country.

We can agree to disagree on sales #'s - but I'm pretty sure we CAN agree that it's not Innova or Discraft's fault that this club is NOT selling CFR's, as the club would actually have to make an effort to get CFR's made if they wanted to sell them.

I really hope they do pull off a top notch Event as the ladies have come to enjoy for the past 10 years, and I would imagine that with next year being in Charlotte, that them getting CFR's won't be an issue. ;)

See you somewhere out there in the future Bruce,

I have had decent luck with CFRs and pushed for them. I use them for most or all the events I run for the store. To the best of my knowledge when the Club contacted Innova about doing a special disc just for this event, they were basically told no. We had asked about GLO CHAMPION WHIPPET_Xs and were told there would be no intrest outside of our own. Less than a month later they were made available for a distance contest. To the best of my knowledge there has been a ton of intrest and I sold 35 of the 50 I had with no onlne help. You may be thinking, well then why not get them anyways, and that I cant answer, but could say because I saturated the market in the QCs for them and every event everywhere is selling them online. I was told the CFR program was available, but that the club was looking for something special, which Innova has no problem doing for other events of less caliber. The standard CFR line-up works if you have enough time to move it, but otherwise you really only move it quick if its something new and in demand. We arent going to invest a bunch of club money on GLO TLs and FLs. They are great discs, but readily available through many online retailers, and I can understand that the club didnt want money tied up elsewhere when it may be needed for more important things than the added cash. If we could have gotten something exclusive, the club wouldve invested the time and money needed to move the product, this I am sure of. What Orange Guy is saying is true, for the most part, the Club did invest in CFR discs and still have some in stock, or just moved the remainders. Those were bought 3-4 years ago.

It would be nice to hear how Huntsville is doing, Ive heard many stories about thier handling of this event and the backlash from the club there. I hope they are false rumors, but in the event they arent, I dont think anyone can question how our club chooses to spend its money.

Heres a question I would LOVE to have answered: Is this event about the purse or the fact its a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP?

KeithI agree that it is not Innova or Discraft's fault that the QC club didn't buy CFR. Innova has a very good deal on CFR, regardless of whether you InnColor it or hotstamp it.

Selling CFR is like selling anything. We got lucky with CFR Destroyers a couple of years ago when we caught the market at a good time and raised some money for our A-tier. Otherwise, either you're good at manipulating people into thinking you have something they need, or you're not a salesman. I'm not much of a salesman. I cannot fault QCDG if they didn't have a good salesman willing to volunteer for this job.

As to Chase, the pro women are no different from the pro men that way. It is always about the money. Have you never read anything Sarah Succubuzz Demar posts? It's all about the LOC and the REC, and the C in both stands for Cash.

I believe an attempt is being made by the Club and Innova to provide CFR's for this event through an on-line company so the club does not have to come up with cash up front for the CFR's. And yes, the logo is pretty sweet. It's been a dream of both mine and Betcher-Spragues to do something w/ the Rosie design. When nationals came along we jumped all over it.

It would really help out the QCDGC, and the rest of the midwest clubs and tournaments to shed a positive light out there and not complain about how someone else would have run it. The midwest has some of the BEST courses and it is an honor to be able to share it with people from all over the country. It is what it is now, and no one but us sees the manual labor, the hard work of getting not only local but some big name national sponsors for this event and to grow it even more. Many of us have put in countless hours for this event, and to get blasted by other midwesterners or on CFR's is just ridiculous. This is why so many people end up leaving the sport or drop out of assisting with events, and I'm fighting hard to make the men realize if you want the sport to grow you have to get the women involved and playing.

I usually don't post much, but I am so tired of all the negative energy that is infecting this sport via forums and such. We throw frisbees!! This is all supposed to be fun and positive. Let's not lose sight of that. And I guarantee the women that come to the QC for Nationals will have a great time, with great people on some fantastic courses in the midwest! Women Rock!!!

Anyone that knows me or the Events I run is laughing at that knowing I'm all about supporting the women playing and sponsoring Events that support women and are run for women.

I never denegrated the Event or said it would stink, I only responded to the post which said it was Innnova's fault they couldn't raise money when this Event has been planned for the last 2 years, and they just recently decided to try and get CFR's - badly it seems until now. If nothing else this conversation hopefully got things moving in a POSITIVE direction.

And as stated earlier by myself I hope everything goes great with the Event, and as stated by Bruce, the ladies are also hoping I'm sure that the payouts resemble what they've been used to in the past 10 years, whether it was the Wallis', or Huntsville doing them.

I've got no girl in this fight, but as a long time TD, I do have fundraising to do for Events I run, and I'd hate to have to do it without CFR's from the manufacturer's, as it's basically free money after you sell the first half of the quantity of discs bought.

And your still wrong. It was decided not to invest into the CFRs after there was no help getting an exclusive disc. Some people felt the way you do, others didnt. I offered to sell them both online and in our pro shop, but it would still have come out of the club money. The offer was presented to make them available with no cost to the club, so they will be. Had the same thing been offered before, it wouldve been accepted then. Thanks to Innova for stepping in and getting that done. Its a great design and hopefully they will move some, but it will have little effect on the purse. It also didnt put the club into a bind by having to come up with x amount of dollars to buy discs that may or may not sell. Then were are you?

Club members have been doing tons of other fundraising efforts all on their own time that is actually working well.

Nobody blamed Innova for us not having CFRs, maybe a specific disc, as we felt the Women deserved.

As you said yourself, you got no stake in this event, whatsoever.. you surely havent added anything to the thread that I can see.

On the same note on course maintenance: Middle Park cleanup is now almost complete. With more than 20 inches of rain during July/Aug., the course had been flooded/soggy and not manageable. We have had one whole week of dry weather (which hasn't happened since spring) and our Bettendorf Parks Dept. has been able to hit it hard. The skid loader that had to be towed out of hole 1 two weeks ago because of the mud, made great work of the back 9 fairways in one day! The trees that had fallen in the middle of the fairways during our many storms have been cleared or cut back. The poison ivy and poison oak has been sprayed. And the bridges to go over the ravines that doubled in size during the flooding this summer will go in next week. I have been out trimming paths that the large equipment cannot get to, and I would say the course is looking great for being a swamp most of the summer.

All you Midwest ladies, get signed up and join us. This event may not be in the Midwest for a few more years if they rotate it again. Take advantage of your close proximity, and your skill at playing wooded courses. Support your women-only tournaments! And you Texas gals--I played in the cactus w/ you in April, come on up and join us in our very green state!

I kept people looking at it every day. :)

I'm happy to see the responses and see the efforts you all are putting to make this Event great. I have an almost 13 year old daughter that would have been there if there wasn't an A-tier in Augusta, GA being only 2 hours away.

It seems like as little as only 2 weeks ago WOMEN were complaining about lack of information about this Event.

So I'm sorry if you see it as nothing to add, I see it as rallying the local troops against an evil poster which helped get information out.

And yes when the CFR discs are out I'l buy not only one for myself, I'll buy 2 so I can donate 1 as a CTP for the ladies at another Event that treats women like Gold - the Hawk Hollow Open in Virginia.
Please keep us posted on when the discs are available.

For your information, many things were happening BEFORE Women's Nationals. Please get all the facts before you post.

Why bring up our name with that kind of negativity in the first place? One could definitely question your motivation or purpose of stating these stories/rumors while posting about this year's Women's Nationals.

For a few pros, it is all about the national championship. For the others, it is about the purse.

So it's a no-no to inquire about the state of the club that hosted women's nationals last year in regards to the strain and stress that hosting this event can put on a club?

But it's OK for lots of people to inquire (dictate?) as to how a club is handling the hosting of the current event?

No matter. The courses are looking awesome, the lunches will be delicious, the evening activities will be a blast and the weather looks to be ideal.

Bringing up stories and rumors is NOT inquiring. If you would like to inquire, then please email or call the people responsible for putting on last year's Women's Nationals. I'm willing to bet that they would help in anyway possible or answer any questions about the strain and stress of hosting this major. I'm pretty sure that they would be happy to give you any input because they have been through it, and they understand what it takes to put on a first-class major.

I don't hear people dictating. When you go to a major year after year after year, you become accustomed to certain things. When those things are not there, people will complain.

We are at middle park and can't find any information on what layout we are playing this weekend (which makes practicing difficult)

Any info? We're sitting on hole 1s teepad :)

MDR ( the female ) shoots a 54 in the A.M.

Liz Lopez fires a 53 in the afternoon round. Val also caught fire w a 54, going crazy on a few holes for huge 2s, and almost got ate by a big *** bird. Not sure on Des and the other wonderful ladies here= Just an update. Im sure scores will be up if they arent already!

53 and 54 on the course is pretty smoking. The ladies came to play.

Those that arent here, you really missed out. People here are bending over backwards to make this the best experiance it can be. Even I am suprised at how well everyone here has responded, and it was a Friday most people couldnt take off from work!

Dont worry though, plenty of people here are talking about you. Most are actually happy you didnt make it, not happy that your pointless whining caused a change at West Lake. I did hear some people talking about missing your girls though, hope that makes you feel better.

The action is heating up and tomorrow will be all about business. Lots of the ladies have had flip flop days, hot in the morning, off in the afternoon-or vice versa.

Thanks to all the Women that came from everywhere. We hope you had a great time, and that you will come back and play here again. Your being here was so huge for QC disc golf, I cant really put it into words. You were all awesome, and this was one of the best tourneys I have been to! Thank You.

Im sure there will be more posts to follow this, I think everyone is still a little overwhelmed.

Thanks also to all the voluteers that helped scorekeep and spot for the Ladies, and thanks to Mom, Old Man and Wilbur for hanging out this weekend! Thanks to everyone that visited sponsors and went to the players party(s)! Thanks Again, Everyone.

Except Bruce. Heres a guy that couldve brought his family here, been embraced by everyone in this town and at the event, and instead doesnt show and acts like a total dink. Nice private message as well....**** YOU ******** that was awesome to wake up to!

Carolina 2010 can learn some valuable lessons of what to do and what not to do by reading this thread. One thing that can be learned is there should be one person designated to answer questions on this forum. This person should be knowledgeable, have some authority and most of all BE FRIENDLY!!!

It takes someone with a lot of patience who is willing to answer the same questions over and over and provide links to all necessary information. It takes someone who will not get defensive when concerns are brought up. It takes someone who will not say negative comments to potential players, their families, former host cities and sponsors (pre or post event). It is not this person's job to tell potential players they are not asking questions correctly or providing feedback in a proper manner. It is not their job to point out problems with other host cities, or complain about other volunteers and potential event sponsors.

The number one job of the club liaison to the PDGA message board (besides answering questions and being friendly) is to make every person reading WISH they could go to the USWDGC instead of wondering IF they should go.

I, along with many others, agree. Being defensive, calling people names, and not answering legitimate questions in a professional manner on the PDGA forum will not help your event or cause in any manner. After reading these posts, I can certainly understand why many women chose not to come to this major. I truly believe it is just a few bad apples and not the whole tree. I'm sure that many volunteers gave their best effort to make this a good event. We really appreciated your time and effort. Everybody was helpful, and we appreciated the scorekeepers. Thank you John Resch (the td) for your kind words. The water and drinks were plentiful. Thank you to all of the volunteers!

repost by BeckyZ on the IowaDG.com forums:

Super Great Job John R. and the Quad Cities Crew!!! There were so many amenities and fun times that it is hard to list them all!

- The courses were clean, fun and challenging. As an amateur, I really appreciated playing Camden 1 and the shorter tees at Westlake and playing only 18 holes there! The spotters and scorekeepers all were handsome, charming and so very helpful!

- The players pack with the event Huk-Lab collared shirt, organic Iowa Soap and Bug Spray, lots of Luna Bars, hair ties, and way ubercool Keen Socks and Keen chap stick and Disc-Diva button and discount coupons and other items was greatly appreciated.

- The course maps were clear and uniform, the Players Guide included directions so we didnt get lost in the QC! The players parties were fun and Saturday night the super funk band playing outside in front of RIBCO (Rock Island Brewery)! Carl Densons Tiny Universe and opening band Uniphonics from Iowa City got the groove on!

- There were apples, bananas, coffee, breakfast bars Luna Bars, waters , pop, Snapple products all over the courses and lunches provided each day. There was even a special delicious USWDGC cake provided by Hy-Vee Food Stores for after the awards ceremony.

We are very lucky here in the Midwest IA, IL, MO, KS, NE, WI, OH, and MN. Over the years we have had so many gentleman disc golfers who have shown huge support for us ladies. And you all in the Quad Cities have continued the tradition and demonstrated that support again by running a hugely successful event!

Shouts out to the QC Gals too and all your efforts- Tracey Lopez, Kathy Betcher-Sprague, and Carrie Ricketts! THANKS TEAM QC for the wonderful way fun four days, renewing old friendships and making new friends, fond memories, and all your hard work leading up to the event and during the event!!! Great Job QC!!!!!

First off, I am not an official club spokesman, far from it. I am a club member, and was a cash sponsor and fundraiser for this event. I was an advisor on some things relating to the tournament. My posts should not, but ultimately will, be held against the club. That is my fault.

I am the bad apple, Im sure. There is only one. You can direct your posts at me, not at the effort put forth by the many volunteers who sacrificed time and money to make this the best event it could be. As pointed out fairly, I took offense to things I shouldnt have and got defensive at times it wasnt needed. Again, my bad, but I will protect the club and back its decisions. Those post arent club posts, they are my posts. Spin it how you will, but thats the truth.

Karen, you could have easily said anything to me about any and everything I have posted. You could have but didnt, and probably should have. It is obviously still with you and had I of thought you were that insulted I would have went out of my way to find you and apologize.

I was there from the first round to the last. I was at sign in and went to the Saturday night player party. I met with dozens of ladies and gave them high praise for coming to our event, thanking them for everything they were doing for the future of disc golf in the Quad Cities.

I made alot of new friends this weekend, and on the way rubbed some people the wrong way. Hold it against me, not the effort put forth by others.

I was not a "official TD" of this event but worked my butt off to make sure that everyone had a good time and was treated like a lady should be treated. Sorry for some of the negative posts when people criticized, but you tend to take things like that very personal when you are up at 5:45 in the morning to load a truck, trailer, and a yamaha rhyno, then work the tournament all day, take a quick shower, grab your wife and head to the players party because you don't want to miss a minute of the fun with these wonderful ladies. It was the best disc golf experience I have ever had, and I never threw a disc. You haven't lived until you have have seen Ma Wallace booty groovin with all the girls at the players party. Thanks again to all our ladies and a special thanks to our senior grandmasters Leslie Charles and Chris Powell for letting me be a part of their weekend, I enjoyed every single minute of it. My wife and I are giving serious consideration to packing up the rhyno and heading down to help next year.

Hello all,

As the TD for this event, I would first like to say that public forums are just that, a place where anyone and everyone is free to express themselves in the manner they see fit, as long as it falls within the guidelines of established protocol. I will neither defend nor attack any of the previous posts, as they are what they are, people expressing their opinions. And although I do have my own opinions on some of the things that have been said, I do not feel that it is my place to pass judgment on, or to scrutinize the ideas of others.

Having said that, I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled I am to have been a part of this spectacular (in my opinion, and hopefully others) event! There are two things, or phenomena, if you will that made this event both unique and exceptional for me.

First off, is the whole atmosphere surrounding this particular tournament that is completely different from any other tournament I’ve been involved with, and that was the attitude and behavior of the ladies in attendance. The best way to describe it is one of joy and elation. They all seemed truly delighted to be spending three days with each other playing disc golf, and just hanging out. I’ve never seen so many smiles on the faces of people who were competing against each other. All I can say is, if you’re a lady, and you missed this event, you really missed something special. I highly recommend you take the next opportunity that presents itself (South Carolina 2010, Texas Women’s Championship, La Vie en Rose, etc.) to attend a “ladies only” event. You will not regret it.

Secondly, the turnout by the volunteers from our club and surrounding clubs was just amazing. I just can’t say enough about the people who worked tirelessly to plan and coordinate leading up to the event, and to those that turned out on “game day” to help make this tournament a huge success.

It would be foolish for me to try to thank everyone involved, but I’m going to go out on a limb to try and hit some of the key people that stepped up to plan before the event, and to those that were there to help execute that plan.

Those who were instrumental in putting the plan together, were Brad Ellis, Tracey Lopez, and Kathy Betcher-Sprague. Helping Brad out with the website was Wes Keppy.

Course clean up and maintenance involved a lot of individuals, but the ones who were always there either alone or with groups include Chris Sprague (designer and builder of Camden II), Evan Qualls, Ron Rasmussen, Mike Friestad, Brad Ellis, Wes Keppy, Dustin Avery, Shawn Rodriquez, Paul and Bill Roesner, Mike Robinson, Chase Roberts, and countless others. I apologize in advance to those that deserved mentioning here.

And, to those who helped out when it was show time: Jeff Harper from Coralville, IA for manning the scoreboards (among other things), Paul Roesner (the man on the Rhyno), the Wallaces (Mom, Old Man, and Wilbur), Mike Robinson, Chase Roberts, Evan Qualls, and the innumerable people who showed up to keep score, spot, help set up, or just run errands. These things just don’t happen without the unselfish contribution of time and effort by a lot of dedicated people.

Also, a big thanks to club member and GM of the host hotel, The Americinn, Dave Arango, for giving 110% at his hotel to make the girls stay fun and comfortable. I know he gave out a couple of $100 + a night fireplace/hot tub suites for the $55 player rate. Plus BIG parties in the pool/hot tub area after hours. Thanks, Dave.

Finally, and most importantly, I have to thank my wife, Toni, who put up with my constant absence and mood swings leading up to the event, and for being there with me throughout the entire weekend. She made a lot of runs for food, water, toilet paper, etc. without ever questioning or thinking twice about it. I am so fortunate and thankful to have her as my partner.

As I said at the first Player’s Meeting Thursday night, as a leader, I don’t have any effect if there are no people to lead. And as my favorite definition of a leader states: “A leader is someone who knows how to get people around him who are better than himself”.

Thank you all, players and volunteers, so much. This wouldn’t have happened without YOU!

John

Name: Marie Fry
Pdga number: 18020

Message:

I tried to post on the discussion board, but was not able to make that happen, so please feel free to copy this as you like.

I just want to again express my thanks to you and all of the many volunteers for the work that went into the USWDGC. I had a wonderful time - probably the most fun I've had so far. The courses were beautiful and challenging. I enjoyed meeting all of our scorekeepers and spotters. The host hotel was amazing. I have never seen a breakfast offered like that before. Dave needs some extra special thanks for being able to provide those accomodations. The "players party" Sunday night was great. Thanks to everyone for supplying the pizza, beverages and entertainment. I had a blast. Please congratulate everyone on a job well done. And to all the ladies who have not made it to this tournament yet - what are you waiting for?

Thank you.

I'm another one that just wanted to say a big thank you to John, The Quad Cities DG Club, and Iron Lion for all of the hard work and long hours put into putting such a great event on! This was my first USWDGC, and I left with so many great memories! Evan and Dave were great scorekeepers and just fun people to be around. The West Lake Campground was very nice and fairly convenient. John, my card appreciated you moving cards around for round 2 at Camden 2 so we didn't have to start on 6 again (twas a brutal hike). I was grateful that you listened to Evan's request and went with it!

I got to meet so many awesome disc golfers. We had some friendly neighbors at the campground as well that were fun to chill with when we were there. This was my first trip to Iowa, but I hope to make it back soon since I had such a great experience!

To any ladies that have not been to a USWDGC, I urge you to make the trip! It is well worth the time. It is so much fun and you will leave counting down the days until the next year's USWDGC!

Thanks again!

Looks like they didn't have enough gators in the amateur pool to generate unofficial ratings. If someone brings this to Chuck's attention in a timely way, he might be able to use lower rated players or fewer gators to generate official ratings.

John Resch

i also just wanted to say thank you to everyone involved...

from the scorekeepers on every card, to the water and drinks provided, lunch every day, the hotel accomodations and parties - it was great!

just a little story, i found myself with an injured knee on the first hole of our second round at camden 2. i hobbled around with the help of our scorekeeper (i forgot his name!) - he was so nice! Jenn and Alison were great also, as i was playing a little bit slower :-) also, the gator arrived at our last hole to take us back to tourney central (hole 6 faarrr away) - if it wasn't for that guy on the gator, i may have slept on the camden 2 course that night!

thank you to everyone - this will not be my last uswdgc!
