I just wanted to know if there was any reason Elaine King was not in the spotlight on the PDGA homepage after winning the 2007 USWDGC?

Also, Why isn't Val on the cover of the magazine along with Nate for winning the World championships?

It seems as if the women of the sport aren't getting the coverage they deserve.

I would imagine there is no article because Terry Miller is busy playing in the USDGC right now. Maybe he can post an article about it next week. Then it might stay on the front page longer.

Ah, makes sense. I didn't know he was the one posting the homepage stuff. But what about Val then? She deserves some cover of the magazine for being a world Champ! :)

And now that I think about it, he had time to post about Des winning the NT Title on there. (congrats to Des!) But nothing about Elaine.

The previous DGW had a feature article on Val and had KC and Feldberg on the cover. With nine Pro World Champs plus all of the Am World champs, there are only so many covers. I think Rick tries to spread the wealth. Usually, magazine cover shots have more to do with what photo they have that works best, not necessarily which top player is on there.

I suspect the PDGA would be happy putting tournament articles and photos submitted by women on the front page if they received any.

Maybe next year, we could designate a woman to write this article. Since it's a women-only event, it might be nice to have the story from a female perspective. Granted, Terry was the event marshal...although he did show up late 2 out of 3 days.

LOL
That would be awesome! That's a great idea. We should get that idea rolling around for next years USWDGC. Still, at least a picture and even a little paragraph about Elaine's win would have been nice on the homepage.

Are you talking about the front page of the magazine or the website? It's a great idea, who would we submit that too?

Send it to Karolyn at PDGA HQ and she can see about getting it posted. It's possible that Dave oversees that though and he's at the USDGC now.

Sweet, thanks. I do believe she is heading to USDGC also to take photos though. I'm sure I'll talk to her today anyway. Thanks. :)

Elaine King has won 5 World titles, and now 2 WDGCs.. and she was never once one the cover of the DGWN.
She has and still is conquering in the sport! Theres no reason for her never getting the cover that she deserves.

Ladies, we gotta get together and do something about this..
Comments to the pdga, and us taking pictures and speaking up will get things rolling the way we need them to..
We can't leave it up to the "male majority" in the PDGA to promote us women, we need to help promote ourselves.. Lets let them know we're here!
:D

as a male disc chucker i'd like to see the womens print and photo spread out as well. there does seem to be a lack of coverage at all venues including the amature levels.

I brought this up YEARS ago and got a reply back that since our numbers are so small, it didn't really matter!!!:(

I agree that Elaine King is very deserving of being on the cover of Disc Golf World and/or Flying Disc Magazine. It should be pointed out however that the PDGA has no control over who is on the cover. That decision rests solely with the publisher.

Brian Graham

If we're the only ones that believe that we actually matter, then we need to keep doing whatever we can to make ourselves noticed in our accomplishments.
Most of the age divisions in our sport go unnoticed also.. because this sport is so small (comparitively) its almost left up to us to promote what we are doing and what we have done in this sport.. I guess we better take action..
and having this new magazine coming out for disc golf, its not too soon to give them a headsup on what us ladies want to see!

I second that. the ladies of the sport deserve to be coved just like the men. We seem to over look the ladies and jr's.

Val it's sad but you are right. no disrespect to DGW. I now Rick can not be ever where at once or go to all DG events. It appears that one has to be at the right place at the right time. and hope that a bigger story is happen some where else.

we need more people with cameras at more events sending photos to the new publisher.

Come to North Carolina and play I will flood them with photos.

Videos were great! loved them.

Don't forget that Rick won't be doing the magazine in 2008 anymore, but i agree we need to see more representation of the women in the magazine and on its cover some to.

Has anyone else come across the post for the 'Safari Girls' sponsorship? Apparenly this Safari Club out of San Fran convinced two major sponsors, Outback and Hooters, to sponsor a team of disc golfing women to showcase the beauty of girls in our sport.

Yeah......here's a direct qoute from the auditions invite:

"Action wear - Shorts / tee-shirt / collared shirt / strap top / strapless top. Shorts and tops form fitting please (Sexy is OK)

This is a fun filled afternoon learning the basics of playing our sport and seeing how well you photograph and video in action. Please Plan accordingly. (It's OK to sweat too.)

Call 808-269-5475 and email safaridiscgolf@yahoo.com immediately to confirm because, we're only meeting with 5 potential Safari Girls in Maui and that's it.

Please visit discgolftv.com and view videos, especially training on how to use a golf disc. Be sure to check out any instruction on putting and driving. If you have access to golf discs you're invited to practice.

If you would like to borrow a disc to practice with ahead of time please call 808-269-5475 and I'll arrange a time at my convenience to loan you a disc or two."

So basically what they want are hot chicks in hotpants pretending to hold discs who have never even played the sport. I asked why in the world would they want to provide a fake product and this guy, Geo, said, "Sarah, sex sells. Period. We did our research. We put up videos on uTube of hot girls who were bad at disc golf against guys who were good at it, and you tell me which got more hits?"

So I said, "Then did you put up videos of girls who are great at the sport against the hotchicks who were lousy?" His response, "No, that wouldn't have any relevance." HUH?????

This was one of the creepiest conversations of my life, swear it. This guy was sooooo un-disc golf, so stereotypical LA, so not what the sport needs. I asked him if he thought that maybe the disc golfing men of the world wanted to see a woman who was strong and talented and admirable and he laughed in my face.

AAAARRGGHHH!

When I saw that posting elsewhere I really thought that is was some sort of scam.

I think it's a good idea. Even bad publicity is still publicity. If it takes a hot girl with no talent to get people interested than so be it.

Vanessa
Jan 15 2008, 05:50 PM
I disagree with the implication that this kind of publicity is good for the sport. The only kind of thing that this kind of thing is going to "get people interested" in is the hot chicks, not disc golf. And of course, the "people" who would be interested in that are a pretty limited demographic (young-ish men), not including younger schoolkids, older folks who have grown out of thinking that a strapless top = a good sport for them to be involved in, and -- of course -- actual WOMEN.

Bad publicity is, usually, bad publicity.

There are lots of "hot chicks" playing disc golf (my fiancee included :D).

I don't think that the player's hotness should have much to do with their being featured in publications, etc. This isn't a fashion show or a bikini modelling competition, it's a sport. Sure, sex sells. But I don't think new male players are attracted to the sport because they think it will get them laid. I also don't think new female players are attracted to the sport because they just look so cute carrying a DG bag.

I live with one female golfer and I play regularly with several others. I have shared the course with just about every "big name" lady golfer, and even had the privilege of playing a round or two with some of the sport's best. These ladies are great competitors and even though many of them are well above average in looks, it's their skill I find most impressive.

Jan 21 2008, 01:13 AM
Believe me when I say I was only kidding. More with Sue than anyone else. I have always made it a point to try to keep sex (Hooters, beer girls, etc) out of disc golf. Not that I think those girls shouldnt play, they should. But they should not be featured as disc golfers because they have a disc in their hand. They have to know how to throw it as well. Looks and disc golf have nothing to do with each other. Its hard enough to play with mostly guys and be taken seriously. Even harder to get new women to play sports if they think its connected to sex. Thank goodness it seems to have really been changing in the last couple years.

Nelle..................You know I think you're HOT girl!

But, you're right, just not my type. LOL

I know you guys are not old enough, but it had a Tenneco flavor to it..........Texas style.

I think every woman who ventures out and deals with you guys is HOT and ATTRACTIVE, and best of all, we all LOVE to have fun.

These people are not connected to the San Francisco Disc Golf Club. They are also not connected with DISCovering the World. Though from the name you could infer the association. Here is a spiel they posted to the MFA message board last November.

Are you open to the idea of earning more dough than most touring Disc
Golf Pros?

Last year our Safari Guides made an average of $500 for leading 2 day
tours with only couple of handfuls of folks!

Imagine making $500 smackers for playing Disc Golf and showing folks
a great time for 2 days! Now think about leading 40 or 50 two day
tours a year with our assistance. Wow! It can really add up! Pretty
good for our sport eh?

How would you feel getting paid more than most touring pros for
simply showing folks a great time & playing a couple of rounds a day
with no pressure to win, place or show?

If you're ready then step up! Because it could be your turn and we
want to share with you the in's and out's of being a top-notch Safari
