I don't think this has anything to do with my throwing, I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if anybody can identify it...

My left elbow has begun to really hurt. If I try to lift my bag I get a pain shooting through it, specifically if I'm lifting the bag up and over to drop the strap over my shoulder. There is a tender spot just above/upper arm of my elbow if I touch it just to the inside.

Now, the interesting thing: This is not my throwing arm.

BUT... the tenderness is a NEW thing after a day of already feeling the pain. And now today I started to feel the pain in my right elbow, but no tenderness yet. It could be just a tired and strained tendon, and I'll know it if it doesn't get tender to the touch...

But if it IS the same thing, can anybody recognize this? Both arms suddenly getting pain in the elbows and tenderness just north of the elbows slightly to the inside of the arm?

-Chris.

EDIT: Just a note, no I do not play any other sports where I could be injuring both arms. Haven't played any Ultimate in a month.

Incorrect arm placement on arm rests at a keyboard can lead to this. I had to have work buy me a new chair in florida due to this. Ideally, your elbows will be at your sides, not resting on anything if you have 'proper' posture.

Could be it. My posture is abysmal.

Your injury may very well have come from something other than disc golf for sure, but don't rule it out yet...

I have heard of people getting injured from their follow through and/or lack there of. Have someone watch you and see if you do anything odd with your follow through.

I've got a pretty complete follow through, I've done a LOT of video analysis of my throws, that shouldn't be the issue (shortening it). I can usually tell when I jerk it through and shorten it because I *DO* feel elbow pain on the throw when I do, so I make sure to complete the motion every time just to avoid pain in the first place.

So far lots of ice and some ibuprofen has helped out. It didn't hurt at all yesterday (got my 3rd straight b-tier win whee). So I'm going to stick with that and try to improve posture. Got an unsanctioned today, we'll see how it holds up, this weekend is a real grind on it and it'll really hurt if it IS disc golf causing it.

I had same thing happen to me. A cordizone shot and 6 months rest and I'm back to "normal"... although some would beg to differ....

It sounds like a touch of tendinitis maybe? I have started having some elbow issues but mine is on the bottom. I wore a compression brace last weekend and it seems to help. I also started taking Osteo-Bi-Flex for a few months a year and it keeps the tendinitis away from my shoulder, but I haven't used it in a while so I think it will help my elbow too. It's something you can find in any drugstore or grocery store.

Some icing sent it on its way. It has felt much better after consistent icing, and using ibuprofen during rounds. Less pain every day so far.

That's just masking the pain though. You need to find out what's causing it and then rest it. Time is the only healer for real...cordizone shots help for the pain too but don't really fix the problem.

Well, its gone away during normal tasks too, which is why I'm going to assume it was inflammation of some sort. The ibu doesn't do much for pain relief, but it is huge for inflammation. If the only cause was inflammation I should be in the clear now. If it returns I definitely will go with a few months of rest. Thank you for the help, appreciated!

Start taking daily doses of Glucosamine Chondroitin, it's like lube for your joints, helps generate cartilage. I had an elbow problem back when I first started throwing hard and not only did it go away, I never had an issue with it again. I take it occasionally, when I remember, and I suggest it to anyone with elbow, knee, shoulder or hip issues. It's also good if you have a family history of arthritis.

Is it over the counter? I'll check it out. Thanks!

I'm 19 and I have bursitis in my throwing elbow. Yes I know, it's sad that I'm complaining about bursitis as a teenager, but I have never had any problems with my elbow hurting after practice or a tournament. So unless your throwing technique is completely out of whack, your pain is probably not coming from playing disc golf.

I find sidearm and overhand shots to affect my elbow moreso than backhand shots, but if I spend a lot of time throwing bombs in an open field my elbow will give me subtle hints to stop for a day or so!

I was throwing a thumber overhand shot and i released the disc to late and i feel like i pulled something in my elbow and now it cracks everytime i throw but its started to fade away after a couple of days. I guess an ounce of prevention does weigh more than a pound of consiquince. I find if you stretch before each round that chance of hurting yourself is lowered.

also this works to try meditating just sit outside with a good posture and imagine a beam of light shining on your elbow and its healing it and repairing and making it stronger. plus meditation relieves stress there fore making you loose as a goose and thats what you want when you play.

kinda strange but i have the opposite problem... i hurt my elbow throwing backhand and now I can throw just about any other throw (including thumbers... which I throw my fair share of) without paint... its only when I try throwing backhand hard that it hurts or acts up again.

After Big D Singles I woke up the next morning with terrible pain in my right wrist. I thought it was an overuse issue. My doctor is booked solid until April because he is that good, but I got in a week later on a cancellation. He said the wrist problem was really a neck problem, even though my neck didn't hurt a bit, until he started poking it. Then it hurt big time. When he was done working on my neck, 90% of the wrist pain was gone. The rest was inflammation and now about 98% of the pain is gone, which is about as good as I get at my age.

Sometimes my problems are related to my throwing. sometimes they are related to really old football injuries and bicycle accidents. He said this was a really old sideways whiplash thing resurfacing, so it was probably related to when I got run over by a school bus in 1980.

He has done the same thing for me with forearm tendonitis, knee and ankle pain. It all starts where those nerves go go through the gaps in the spine, or where they get tugged on by spasmy muscles.

Not too many doctors are trained to do what he does. He has taken on a new doctor in his practice that he is training. She is fully licensed as an osteopath but it really takes years to learn what this guy does.

You can e-mail me if you want his contact info.

This is why accupuncture works so well - it targets all areas of the body. Finding a good accupuncturist is the hard part!

Glucosamine Chondroitin are the active ingredients in Osteo-Bi-Flex which is available over the counter. I picked up some today after speaking with the Pharmaist at me local CVS. I got two bottles for buy 1 get 1 free at the same CVS. Check it out, cause my pharmaist said he started using it 7 days ago and can already feel a difference in the pain he was experiencing in his knee.

Hope it works, I will update you in owe say 7 days on how my elbow feels.

Take the combo pill MSM-Glucosamine-Chondroitin .

I take these in high doses on a daily basis and I have noticed considerably less pain in my knees!

This is the type I got. Since orginal post I played 45 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday, with no pain. Still can tell that there was an issue there, but did not have discomfort that caused me to play bad. Elbow with suppliment is good to go.
