"Liddell most likely will face Wanderlei Silva next. "That's what we'll probably do, Chuck verse Wanderlei," UFC president Dana White said afterward. So to all of you UFC admirers old and new, get ready for Silva-Liddell -- and get pumped up for Jackson defending his belt against current PRIDE two-division champ and former UFC fighter Dan Henderson (which will be the first title fight between current UFC and PRIDE champions)."

cant wait for these 2 fights, hopefully they will happen on the same card.

Jackson is for REAL!!

May 30 2007, 01:45 PM
I was surprised that liddell lost to Jackson, but I was more shocked about the implications surrounding the UFC and pride mixture...Is jackson, who was only above average in the Pride world, a representative of the shortcomings of the UFC clan of fighters...Will Fedor come in and simply dominate these fighters. I think Liddell is way outmatched by Silva, whos relentless attack and non-tiring fighting style is unmatched in the division. Liddel may be done as the two worlds collide, and younger more aggresive fighters come forward...Ill tell you what, I have not picked a card correctly since the merger. MMA is eploding on the scene, and american fans will be shocked when these multi cultural fighters and pride transplants take the stage. Keep you eyes open, and your mouth closed.

jefferson
May 30 2007, 03:24 PM
i dont think anyone will dominate after the merger, too many good fighters. liddell, eventhough 37, is not done yet. he had an amazing run as the champion that will probably not be matched for awhile (except maybe fedor). silva has lost 3 of his last 5 and has not faired well in UFC fights for some reason. he did lose to tito somehow, albeit 7 years ago. they have been trying to plan this fight for some time, i can't believe it might finally happen... and without a title on the line, crazy.

I'm just glad we're still getting the fights we want. I'm afraid that as the popularity and $paydays$ go up, we will get the "boxing effect" of protecting promising fighters from early defeats.

So far so good because everybody has losses. I hope it stays that way. The UFC has been benefitted from the Don King era as much as boxing has been destroyed by it.

May 30 2007, 03:54 PM
I believe you are correct that liddell's stand as the champ was awesome to see, but like with all fight sports, a champion will come forward and hold the crown, and eventually get a beatdown from an underdawg......I thought GRSP was gonna be unstoppable...eh ehhhhhh....I also thought crocop was gonna kill some UFC boys...Fedor is my last hope as a choice fighter to pick up a win...dan henderson is good, but lacks the commercial edge that the companies are looking for...It would be great to see someone like Kimbo slice get in there...If you dont know him, look him up.

Brandon Vera is the kid that needs to get signed. Big smile, lots of personality, outstanding skills. He's been in a contract dispute with the UFC because he wants the big money now, and you can't really blame him. I think his hope was to work the different leagues against each other for a better payday, but Dana White out smarted him by buying all the other leagues.

"The Truth" is kind of in limbo right now. I hope Dana offers him a decent enough deal to get him in the door, because I see a lot of potential from that kid, with all the tools fight fans love plus all the charisma the sponsors seek.

jefferson
May 30 2007, 04:25 PM
there are so many good fighters coming in its going to get ridiculous. dont sleep on the ruas... shogun (http://ufcjunkie.com/2007/05/24/dana-white-confirms-signing-of-mauricio-shogun-rua/) just got signed thursday. he was supposed to fight liddell now he'll probably await the winner of liddell-silva, or more likely jackson-henderson.

some people seem unaware that liddell-jackson was a rematch, the 1st was more entertaining,
PRIDE (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x68cu_chuck-liddell-vs-quinton-jackson) style. chuck needs to learn the power of the knee... and quickly.

Id like to see less lovemaking in the UFC...Pride fighters didnt roll as much(except gracies) as UFC fighters...the cage lets fighters on the ground have a goal as well as lower the stand back up protocol of pride...They push the other into he cage..cheesy IMO...Plus,,, fighters grab the cage and use it for leverage, also making even good seats, bad....

jefferson
May 30 2007, 05:23 PM
i agree, i also love the yellow card in PRIDE. each fighter gets a yellow, all of a sudden its fists of fury.

this was a great fight, silva vs jackson II (http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/silva%2Bvs%2Bjackson/video/x7z48_wanderlei-silva-vs-quinton-jackson), this after the 1st match where silva landed like 20 straight knees... to the head. the replays at the end are brutal.

anyone see Sam Stout vs. Spencer Fisher last night? their previous meeting was nominated for fight of the year in '06. i didnt see that one but i dont see how it could have been better than this one. these guys pounded each other the entire match and i dont remember them ever going to the ground. both these guys have chins of steel, but fischer was the faster and more relentless striker eventhough stout is muay-thai trained. fischer was winning the fight by everyone's account but he was severely bloodied around the right eye. fortunately, the judges saw through the deluge of blood and scored it correctly 30-27. check out this fight if it gets replayed.

rampage vs henderson will be a unification fight

ESPN.com: At UFC 75, Dan Henderson will fight Rampage Jackson. Is this a unification bout or is this just for the UFC title?
Dana White: It will absolutely be a unification bout. We have to respect Henderson's titles. He knocked out Wanderlei Silva and had the 185-pound championship. When he fights Rampage, they both have belts. Why should Dan Henderson get the UFC title if Rampage can't get the PRIDE titles? It makes one of them the undisputed guy.

Silva?
ESPN.com: Chuck Liddell versus Wanderlei Silva. Is it going happen?
Dana White: God, I hope so. So many people have wanted to see that fight for so many years, and PRIDE basically killed the fight. Now that Chuck has lost, the fight makes more sense, and I'd love to make it happen. We're on the phone every day with fighters and fighters' managers. There's still work to be done.

FEDOR?
ESPN.com: Fedor Emelianenko -- when will he be in the UFC?
Dana White: We'll have him soon. We'll have him before the end of the year.

and the state of PRIDE
Dana White: I don't know what we're going to do yet because that thing is so messed up. We're still trying to figure it out. It's a complete disaster. They went out of business for a reason.

TThe Spider is def one of my favorite fighters, multiple knees, kicks and punches.... to the head. and, his ground game is vastly improved from just 2 fights ago. he destroyed rich franklin and now nate marquardt, who's next? i dont think anyone wants to fight this guy.

tito and evans were supposedly the same weight, but i swear tito looked 15 pounds heavier... maybe its just his huge melon. tito apparently added some kicking to his standup, but it was more of the same for him: head to the groin - takedown attempt. he won the first 2 rounds while causing no real damage, but got a point deducted in the 2nd. i think evans crushed him in the 3rd and if this fight went 5 rounds, i think he would have knocked him out. tie = rematch

if liddell had any muay thai skills at all he would have kneed jardine into a coma silva style. jardine's head was down the whole time. griffin dominated shogun. neither shogun nor liddell could adjust and shogun's fitness was horrendous.

I really think Liddell has some personal problems or something that is keeping him from focusing or preparing for his fights. I have heard rumors of a lil too much partying.

As for Shogun. He needs some cardio. Not much else to say about that.

As for Serra. I hope he beats Hughes but only because I think Hughes is a total doucheclown. Then I can see GSP get some revenge. Other than that, I think Serra is barely in the top 10 in the 170lb divison.

The best looking fighter on Saturday was definetly Jon Fitch. That dude will be fighting for the belt very soon. He is an animal.

i actually watched it at a bar. there's a place on ufc.com where it lists what bars in your area are showing the fight. some charge covers, some dont.

i agree those were probably the 2 best fights, but the okami / tanner fight was good, and kongo / herring had its moments. it was strange that kongo tried to take the fight to the ground so often.

i though a big mistake was not airing the arlovski fight, he's always entertaining and has fought a lot of UFC fights so he is well known. losing couture was obviously a big blow, but they have so much top talent that they will have good matchups for awhile.

not really excited about 83, but 84 is starting to look intriguing.

One thing that's really starting to bug me about the UFC is that the "big name" or "popular" fighters always get these weird rematches. Now, its one thing if the 2 guys battle and one loses by decision or lucky punch/submission. But its another if the guy gets totally dominated. And it usually occurs with one old school/has-been/washed-up fighter that everybody loves.
I'm not talking about GSP/Serra specifically, but, for instance, the 2 Rich Franklin/Silva fights were a joke. Same with the Ortiz/Shamrock fights.
I really get sick of seeing the same guys in the octagon every fight. I swear, every UFC has Griffin, Evans, Tank, Lieben, and/or Liddell.
To be honest, the last 5-8 UFCs I've seen haven't been that great. I think its gotten too popular and mainstream. Jon Q. Public wants to see the same things over and over.
Does anyone else miss the days from a few years ago? It seems like most of the fights used to be the lighter weights, now its all heavy-weight classes. Maybe its just me.

UFC will never be the same with the restrictions it imposed a few years back to clean it up for the public. Bottom line is the guys don't get to hurt and punish each other anymore, so they keep coming back after they wipe the snot off their face.

just lost a lot of respect for hendo:

"...But not against Silva. Im a much better fighter than him and more well-rounded. He caught me and thats the way it goes. I felt he was more lucky against me.

i really hate when fighters and others use the "lucky" cop-out... silva has something like a 70% standup striking accuracy which is far and away the best in mma. over half his wins are TKOs or KOs by strikes... the term "lucky" in reference to his game is laughable

What are the odds on the fight. Last time they fought it was 10-1. Serra might be bleeding after this one! I predict clinch and multiple knees. Serra will buckle, and ground and pound will ensue. After third fist to Serra's unconscious skull, the fight will be stopped. There will be a four minute wait for Serra to wake up, before he is taken from the ring on a stretcher. GSP will thank the home crowd for support and then state that Serra is a great fighter and good friend, and he will accept rematch, if Serra wants one. Thanks for watching.

jefferson
Apr 18 2008, 11:53 AM
... or serra will knock him out again with multiple "lucky" punches to the dome and a canuck riot will ensue the likes of which have never been witnessed since the g-n-r concert debacle.

Apr 18 2008, 12:14 PM
Serra will be dominated like no other belt holder has. I predict an embarrassment to his entire gym and crew, including tears from his greasy brother. The MMA world will not be shocked by the results. He will then fall away into obscurity in his home town in Long island. He will claim excuses, but will have trouble articulating the reasons for his defeat, not only because he has a 10th grade education, but because of a massive concussion and broken jaw.

gonna have to agree with bs, in a word... TTerrible.

the Quarry - Starnes fight i have a hard time explaining. starnes, or the running man, after taking some shots apparently decided the best way to make it through the fight was to run away, and he did, for 2+ rounds. i guess he felt he'd have an easier time telling his friends he lost a decision rather than getting KOd. instead he embarassed himself by running to a losing decision 30-24, and probably lost his UFC contract in the process.

gsp dominated serra completely after taking him down about 2 seconds into the fight. if gsp suffered any damage it was to his knees from serra's shaTTered ribs scratching them.

travis luTTer looked like he only trained for a 1 round fight, and his body seemed surprised it was being asked to go on past 5 minutes. franklin pounded him like a tired tomato can in the 2nd.

everything else was uneventful or featured more starnes-like strategy except for the Hironaka - Goulet fight that got replayed after the main event. guys were throwing bombs and goulet didnt look like he was making it out of the 1st then TKOd Hironaka in the 2nd.

at least we see penn and silva in the next one... i forsee multiple knees to jardines face.

In boxing (per the Washington State Department of Licensing Rules), in the event of a simultaneous knockdown, if neither fighter can rise before the ten-count, it is a KO loss for both. If both can rise before the ten-count but neither can continue (as determined by referee or ringside physician), it goes to the judges' cards.

MMA is obviously a bit different, with no 10-count or even knockdowns per se, but that's how it works in one combat sport.

Pride 2006 Grand Prix champion Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (Pictures) has canceled his June 15 grappling exhibition against Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Ralek Gracie (Pictures) after aggravating an elbow injury in training. Dnevnik, one of the biggest online news portals in Croatia, reported the cancellation of the bout on Saturday.

The match, which was scheduled to be held under modified rules with a no-points system, began as a stopgap solution after promoter Fighting & Entertainment Group was unable to find a suitable mixed martial arts opponent for the Croatian kickboxer.

Excluding a 56-second cameo appearance against overmatched Japanese grappler Tatsuya Mizuno (Pictures) last March at Dream 1, the Zagreb native has not fought in a Japanese ring for over 17 months.

Filipovic suffered the elbow injury in the Mizuno fight, but opted for conservative treatment in order to avoid surgery. However, after more than 15 years in the fight game, "Cro Cop" is finally showing the wear and tear of over 60 professional bouts.

The kickboxer, 33, is now tentatively scheduled for a clash with fellow former K-1 star Jerome LeBanner on July 21 at Dream 5.

def... wrestlers have an unfair advantage in the US because when they do the leg grab from the knees, the sprawler doesnt have a lot of options for counter. if he goes for uppercut or punches he loses that arm for sprawl / leverage purposes. all he can really do is push the other person down and maybe guillotine, but most likely it will be a push down, disengage, and get to feet.

lets see what happens when the wrestlers shoot / grab legs and the free knee is coming at the face. or, what happens when someone employs the fetal defense. have a knee... good day sir

dream of course put on a beTTer show than elite xc (nabs)... we saw the most entertaining fight: Tokoro vs Uyenoyama, Marvelous Manhoef a man possessed demolishing the overmatched legend Sakuraba, Jacare finally beating a quality opponent in miller (def exposing his stand up though), a great win for Mousasi, and another technical domination by aoki finished by an outstanding submission by Gogoplata (which i have never seen from the top).

elite xc did show they landed a good hw prospect in herman as he crushed waterman, ninja dominated an overmatched Bonello, nick diaz failed to make weight then used the extra weight and size to beat down Corbbrey, and noons gets a huge early knockout against Yves Edwards (back to back wins against diaz and edwards).

like the xc event wasnt bad enough, they decided to WWE-ify the end by letting diaz in the cage after noons win. terrible... somewhere in a tanning booth, vince mcmahon became aroused

def possibility coming the july 19th weekend

affliction's opening event (http://www.afflictionclothing.com/banned_july19/) featuring 5 of the top 10 HWs

a free UFC show (http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=13271) supposedly in the works to counter the affliction event. however, latest news indicates the axe murderer will NOT be a part of it

and of course, Dream 5 (http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=13063) 2 days later on the 21st. this will be the best LW show of the year featuring the conclusion of the LW grand prix:

Lightweight Grand Prix Bout: Shinya Aoki vs. Caol Uno
Lightweight Grand Prix Bout: Eddie Alvarez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri
Lightweight Championship bout: Shinya Aoki/Caol Uno vs. Eddie Alvarez/Tatsuya Kawajiri

3 of these fighters are currently in the top 8 in the world, and after alvarez just beat Dida Amade and hellboy, he deserves at least top ten.

in addition to these fights:

Featherweight Bout: Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto vs. Joseph Benavidez
Middleweight Bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. TBA
Middleweight Bout: Denis Kang vs. TBA
Welterweight Championship Bout: Nick Diaz vs. Hayato Sakurai

and don't forget whispers about crocop v overeem, and Sergei Kharitonov (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=4184) joining the card

gonna be sick in a month

jefferson
Jun 17 2008, 12:14 PM
btw... 4 semi-finalists for the middle weight grand prix are:

Ronaldo de Souza
Gegard Mousasi
Zelg Galesic
Melvin Manhoef

hoping for a manhoef v mousasi final at Dream 6

goT To be honest, ThoughT rampage was gonna roll over forrest. fought a very technically sound fight and deserved the decision, i had it: 9-10, 10-8, 10-9, 9-10, 10-9 for forrest for 48-46 (not sure how the last judge had 49-46). hope rampage's knee is alright.

this will create some great future matchups between griffin/silva/liddell/machida/jackson

i want to see silva v machida... talk about conTrasT in styles.

forrest won, not 49-46. rematch?!? I want one!

rematch very likely at some point soon.

cote supposedly will get a title shot now... rumors are spider will fight irvin, okami, and cote all in 08 (of course he'll have to win the 2nd)

the friggin lineup for UFC87 August 9th is awesome....

St. Pierre vs. Fitch
Lesnar vs. Herring
Florian vs. Huerta
Gamburyan vs. Everson
Kongo's fighting......

Cant wait for this one.
I love watching St. Pierre and he's a great fighter, but I got my five bones on Fitch.... He's an animal in that cage.

Been waiting for this one. It may not last long, but that should be the best fight in a long time. I'm leaning toward Florian by submission, but wouldn't be surprised by a Huerta knock-out.

what a [censored]ing disappointment. another example of the PRIDE tourney format FAILing. why have the semis and finals the same night? why?

Alvarez upsets kawajiri in the 2nd semi (maybe the fight of the weekend), but ruled he cant participate in the final b/c of eye damage he suffered. hellboy comes in as the reserve (after defeating black mamba) and pounds aoki's face into the mat. aoki cries for the next hour.

alvarez loses the chance to pound aoki for the title, and gets $10K for the semis. hellboy wins the title (after losing to alavarez in the quarters) and wins $100K.

I am so amped about the Florian/Huerta fight. This is Florian's 1st real test after losing to Sherk, which I bet he is still mad about. Huerta will be surprised. Florian is a totally different fighter than anyone Huerta has faced. Prediction: Florian wins by submission in 2nd round.

I hope Brock wins, I almost feel sorry for the guy.

GSP is the baddest dude in his division and has been on a mission since his last loss, I think to that Jersey dooshbag. I like Fitch, but no contest. GSP by referee stoppage in the 1st.

jmc2442
Aug 09 2008, 12:39 AM
alright, since Colin went at it after the poll I'll give my rap.

I have no clue. GSP Fitch, do I really want to guess?!? Fitch is an animal, GSP, warrior. florian huerta. I've seen both in OUTSTANDING fights. no picks here my friend. I just hope I see some blood, some kicks, some knees, and all heart.

I watched Ortiz vs. Griffin on Unleashed the other day. Most bogus scorecard ever, but Griffin, wow. I want that excitement tomorrow, LIVE.

Elite XC Oct. 4: Kimbo vs. Ken Shamrock.

Why they didn't make the Kimbo/Brett Rogers match is beyond me, but what do the masses think about this one. My opinion is that if Shamrock trains seriously (and hasn't agreed to take a dive), he'll house Kimbo on the mat. But I think that one of those 2 initial conditions (hopefully not the second) may not happen.

Elite XC Oct. 4: Kimbo vs. Ken Shamrock.

Why they didn't make the Kimbo/Brett Rogers match is beyond me

seriously VR? because kimbo will LOSE to breTT and kimbo is by far their biggest $$$ cow. they still have time to prop up an over-the-hill legend for a huge payday / win for kimbo before he meets a ReaL opponent and gets demolished.

kimbo post breTT thrashing is a tougher sell than undefeated

ken hasnt won in over 4 years and has lost 8 of the last 10.

I understand the economic theory behind the lame "match", but the fact that we'll miss a legit KS/BR grudge match for probably at least another year (maybe longer, BR may bolt if he doesn't get a big $$ fight soon) shows EliteXC's disdain for the true fans.
